Hello from England Andy. The structure on the Hood's turret is a UP Projector. UP is Unrotated Projector. They were 7" calibre mortars attached to parachutes by 400 feet of wire to be fired ahead of attacking aircraft to make a curtain between them and the ship. Hitting the wire was supposed to pull the shell into the aircraft where it would explode, or make the aircraft turn away rather than hit the curtain. There is a cabin on the side of the barrels for the operator. It wasn't succesful or popular with ships crews because if the the wind was in the wrong direction, the UP's drifted back towards the ship. They wouldn't do much harm to a Battleship, but for crews such as the AA gunners, on the outside, they would do quite a lot of harm. The idea, invented by Mr. Alwyn Crow, was abandoned for ships late in 1941 and the UPs were replaced during routine maintenance or repair with the eight barrel POMPOM guns, known as the Chicago Pianos. Smaller 3" calibre UPs were installed on land, codenamed Z Batteries and had some success, they flew further than the ship UPs and were set up on the outskirts of cities and on the coast, mostly manned by Home Guard personnel. Some were set up in North Africa to protect ports like Tobruk and Benghazi and a version known as The Land Mattress, for large area bombardment of land targets like the German Nebelwerfer did, was sent to the Far East as the War in Europe was ending. The 16 barrel Land Mattress could be towed by a Willys Jeep.
Thanks for the very interesting info as I only have seen on period photos
Lots of good info, thanks! I seem to recall reading (from the German perspective) how the land-based ones were fired on the outskirts of one of the RAF fields near Kent during an August 17, 1940 raid. The lead Do-17 (if I recall correctly) got taken down, while a following pilot, not knowing what it was and therefore fearing it, immediately banked 90 degrees to avoid it and thus survived.
Hood and Bismarck turrets would make great bookends for my 'History' shelf
The Hood Turrets were fitted with AA Rocket projectors that trailed steel wire behind them when fired!
being british the launcher is a anti aircraft rocket launcher. of total ships company 1,418 only 3 survived. I bought this as a tribute to those men after seeing the bell we salvaged
My Great Uncle went down in HMS Hood
I just finished building the Hood turret. I really enjoyed this kit, it makes a perfect weekend build. It's also a great little display piece.
The Weasel looks nice. Sounding the request for 1/16 scale again!
My father ran a weasel in WW2! Buying two kits definitely!
Kizzp has it correct UPS (Unguided Projectile System) launched a rocket that (I believe) trailed a wire behind it, the idea being to cut the wings off of an attacking plane.....
Those tracks at the start and the construction of them is lovely!
Hello Andy, and thank you for your tutoring how to build models in steps. Thank you and very clear teaching. I really enjoy watching your RUclips videos
The M29 would be a good candidate for a 1/16 scale kit
Wow! Easy track assembly. I like it!
As I'm Italian I wouldn't mind to see the turret of the Littorio and Roma battleships! Good job as always 👏 👍
Good video!! Can remember building Monogram's version of the M29 Weasel way back in those ancient days of the 1970s as a kid. Built a few of them. Looks like o will get this vetsion soon.
I wish Takom would have done turret two with the 40 mm guns from the Iowa class.
I passed on it, but I would get it if it did!!
Now need to put out a M29C variant
I'm happy to see the weasel in plastic, but now I wish they had upscaled it to 1/16th. lulz
Thanks Andy🇳🇿👍
Hood's B Turret should have had the nice metal Barrels, like the others!
I love the box art
Cool kits!!! 👍👍
I'm really glad to see an injection mold M29 released...now the 1957 Monogram kit can finally retire.
We need the m29C that is the Monogram version
@@SLICK-GLN I agree...hopefully that will be the next release. A "canvas" roof/top for it would be nice as well.
@joeshmoe9978 if we got the c version with canvass top we would want this one.
@@SLICK-GLN I've bought and built the old Monogram M29C Amphibious Weasel over 40 years ago whilst living in East Africa ... and I still have it! Honestly, I don't know if I should be proud that I kept it, or if I should rather be ashamed that I ever boght it in the first place🙂As far as I can remember the fit of the kit was awful and the figures were horrible (the worst that I have ever seen, to be precise). Anybody else remember this?
@@MikeUSA67 I have the 1982 issue of this kit in my stash. Sadly, this issue did not include the Shep Paine Diorama Tip Sheet that came with the 1973 / 1975 issues. It's a much more basic kit than this new Takom issue. But it is a legacy kit that may be built into a decent replica. Don't be 'ashamed;' just build it and have fun!
An interior view would look amazing for the Hood's lower decks of the gun turret.
UP turret was trialled on a Churchill tank hull as well, that was equally as ineffective
Awesome Andy!!!❤🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
13:50 - Upper mounting is an anti air device called an Unrotated Projectile or simply UP
Finally a decent Weasel kit.
Andy should sell posters of the box art for his brand of kits.
After you build the Hood turret you toss it in the nearest body of water and watch it sink.
Nice. The Weasel kit looks nice but it is a bit of a hybrid....mostly M29C.....without float tanks with some incorrect M29 details added. Still a nice kit!
We have several of the real thing - even restored them on our channel..nice details on the kit, they just needed to be a little more specific about the model.
I was thinking part of the rangefinder housing, however, on second look, it does not resemble anything that looks like a rangefinder, so I’ve got no idea.
I am surprised no metal Barrels with this since the previous few in the series have ibcluded them.
Watched a documentary on the hood and how unlucky the ship was to be hit as the captain brought the ship round to engage the Bismarck but unluckily turned into the path of the Bismarck's shell
hear our desperate cries for you to release a 1/16 IDF M51 or M50
Hey Andy!
I love your videos and your models ❤
Are There any plans to make a 1/16 Panther Tank or 1/16 Panzer IV?
Thank you.
Wish Takom would offer the M29 Weasel in 1/16 scale.
Whats going on with the deck? The planks just seem to end no where?
Was the british version made in the usa-or england?
A universal carrier from takom would be great towing a 17 pounder AT gun
The Stripes to the turrets were used during the blockage of the Spanish Civil War.
Not much fanfare here introducing the Weasel, but you newer guys might find it interesting that this is the first 1:35 M29 kit in plastic since 1957. Served both in the Pacific and ETO and its unique purpose and diminutive size is going to make for a lot of tiny vignette possibilities.
Second scheme was the Spanish Civil War patrol markings
I think its an anti aircraft rocket launcher
Somebody with access to them should please tell Takom to print their instructions larger. As they seem to be using standardized carton sizes, A4 res Letter size paper should easily fit in there. Every once in a while I need to pull the tiny instruction under my magnifying lens lamp to get a clear idea where they want me to glue parts on. It’s ridiculously small. If they want to spend energy on minimizing things, my proposal would be to work on the sprue gate- model part connection area - tiny parts with huge connections are the norm, not the exception. Other than that, I like their models. Looking forward to their weasel, hope you will have it in your store by mid-September when I plan to swing by.
UP launcher (unrotated projector) interwar anti-aircraft weapon
My God!! I've waited 45 years for this!! Can we pre-order??
It would be neat if the M29 Weasel was 1/16
Why does Andy giggle and raise his eyebrows when he says WEASEL?
The device on top of the turret is a UP launcher - unrotated projectile. It was an anti-aircraft weapon but it was, shall we say, less than successful.
Hood didn't get very "late war".
Did the British also use a white star?
All the Western Allies used the white star in the latter years of the war, although not on every occasion.
Ha the Achilles 007 James Bond 007?
Holy moly are those French markings on that British turret!? No way!
Also, sorry to not pick but the "risers" you're referring to as accurately known as a barbette.
