The weathering is over the top! If my ship had looked that bad even at the height of the Gulf War, Falklands war, I would have had a lot of explaining to do. The unweathered side is just acceptable. When we, in the Royal Navy, paint a ship we make sure the paint is the same colour all over! The Yamato spent so much time at anchor the ship's company had little to do but clean and paint no excuse for (rust) streaks ever! Having said that I really love this model. Maybe for Christmas - hint to the wife!
I enjoyed watching this. I was surprised at the weathering on the 18 inch gun. Japanese crews were fastidious in keeping the Yamato clean, unlike lesser ships. Your deck was great.
I was really interested in this kit when I first saw it. But your review and the high price is making me re-think getting it. I could get 2 1/700 ships for that price and have more fun. For your next kit do the HMS Agincourt - I love the older ships.
I hope i didn't spoil the kit for you, when it is finished, it is a nice-to-look-at model indeed, but it can be disappointing when you first look into the box unprepared. And you can surely lose yourself in weathering and adding your own touches in that scale. Thanks for your comment, hope the video helped a little!
I looked for figures, but naval figures in 1/72 are quite rare, then i looked for 3D printable naval figures, there were none either. maybe a plane would be an easier choice for reference, great idea!
Thank you! I'm starting to think 3D printing figures might be the easiest way. they are probably not as detailed as molded figures or resin, but cheaper and easier to get for sure
Also I like the Diorama effect, but 2 of my friends actually built RC Yamato's in this scale with computerized main guns that elevate and depress/recoil together or seperataly at a slight time difference for a real look.
Another nice build, I like doing unusual stuff too. May I suggest heating PE in a candle flame, you should find that it is more “user friendly “ , just make sure its cooled off before handling. Happy modelling.
Greeting from Jacksonville, Florida. I just subscribed to your channel and I really enjoy your videos and builds. Sir you do a outstanding job! Your a great modeler. Keep up the awesome work and videos. 👍👍
So I and some of my friends have been scratch building WW2 Warships in this scale for 20 years. Now the model companies are starting to figure out that it might be something to delve into. Even the 1/100 and 1/96 scale remote control ships are starting to be replaced by this scale. I have the Light Cruiser Munich/Munchen in this scale that took me about 10 years to make, but could have been in a year or so if I could have bought turret kits, and deck equipment in this scale in kits. But alas, I have 5-3D printers now, so I can make my own, but its good to see it going comerecial.
Very cool, scratchbuilding models is a form of art, in this scale, you'd have to detail it very much i guess! Maybe they will make more components for the ships in this scale in the future, like the bridge or similar things
I am working on the 3 original Star Trek ships in this scale. The Enterprise is 13 feet long, The Klingon Battlecruiser is just over 10 feet long, and the TOS Romulan Bird of Prey is 3 and a half foot in length and 4 and a half wide. Compared to the Constitution class the BOP is not as large as they made them appear in the episodes. I was I the Navy and stationed onboard a couple of Aircraft Carriers, then in the Army and in Germany. I got most of the Plan Z ship line drawings and blue prints of the planned ships before there was the world wide web. LOL now most of them are in World of Warships. I wrote the first volume of a book about these ships while I was scratch building the M class Light Cruiser. I have a friend in Malta that has built a 1/72 scale Scharnhorst Battlecruiser mostly in cardboard like an Architech model as that is what he does for a living. I have made my hull from plywood and auto filler/Bondo and was planning to use it to make molds. I have been putting detail on it. It weighs about 170 pounds which is ironic because it is almost correct to the scale weight of the real ship if they would have finished building it. I really need to get out my camera's and show of the star trek ships though and make video build logs. The Guy in Australia that has built the Battlestar Galactica to studio scale is real interesting to watch. I have to repair my lath also and was debating between a mill and the 3D printers. I make custom archery bows though and needed the 3D printers for parts on the archery stuff, so now we are sitting at 5 machines. I cant quite afford it yet but the next machines we are looking at can make metal parts, and I think some really interesting model pieces.
@@TwistedSisterHaratiofales Damn, im no star trek expert but it sounds really interesting what you do, i'd definitely watch your build videos if you put them on! You have to have your own barn to store all those enormous projects!
@@funinscale2892 LOL, yea my workshop is fairly large. I am at a standstill due to the archery, but when I start back on them I will start posting them, hopefully next month.
I have been looking into a series from Trumpeter for quite a while, in early-ish American battleships. There are ships like the USS Maryland before a big ‘revamp’ of the United States navy, mid-early ships like the USS Colorado after the big revamp, or very late ships like the USS Tennessee. These are very interesting ships though they are only in 1/700, meaning they are terribly small. I hope you can look into this and consider making it, I would like to see you make one!
i have a USS texas and USS New York from trumpeter in 1/700, and a USS South dakota in 1/700, but none of the most modern standard battleships. maybe i can get my hands on a USS Maryland or California, i think a friend of mine had one some weeks ago!
@@funinscale2892 well looks like you’ve kind of started, if you enjoyed the ones you had then you should def check some out. I recommend the Maryland, California, or West Virginia. Cheers, and thanks for the reply!
Blucher please. I like that you do models I am interested in but can not find build videos on line. Like to see if they are worth the money before I shell out the cash
the impression i got at the first glance in the box, it is a good value for around 50€, but i would not pay 60 or more, i'm not sure how that translates to pricing in the US, but, for reference, trumpeter ships in 1/350 are around 70€ (battleships, older ones) where i like to buy
@@funinscale2892 Yeah there is a lot of variation in pricing in the US between about 70 - 85 Euros. Kind of have to sniff around for the best deals. But I agree older kits sometimes have some great value in them if you are selective.
Although your project looks fine, I bet the real Yamato never let their turrets look so weathered. Especially since it was the Admirals flag ship! Having spent 21years in the U.S.Navy Flagships were never allowed to look so weathered. Just my opinion not a critisms of your fine work here. I have this in my stash as well. Nice work on the wooden deck.
Thanks! And thanks for your insight, especially modern ships are always shown in pristine condition, but weathering is just fun and the models quickly look so uniform and toy-like if you paint them only grey. But it surely would be more realistic. What ships did you serve on?
@@funinscale2892 There are some very interesting videos with animations about the layout of the turrets and ammunition supply system on RUclips check it out! Its worth it.
This would be even more interesting. sadly, there are even 1/200 and 1/350 turrets that include interior, in this size it should be easier, but i'd assume, the cost of the kit with interior would be too high, after seeing what they charge for this, which is basically just two plastic boxes :)
I tried to do so, with shading by airbrush, but it is hardly visible on camera due to the high contrast between the light blast bags and the dark turret, i assume. But a little more weathering with maybe a light brown wash would have been suitable, you're right!
@@theodorospatsos3926 True! this is the most impressive thing about the turrets of warships, you can't comprehend their true size until you see something familiar next to it!

A good adjacent display would be a Rufe seaplane (also carried by the Yamato) of the same scale, just to show how massive the turret was.
