      Just to answer your question, you can add more of the same gourami species in the same tank (follow the same ratio on gender) but you shouldn't mix species, you're very likely to get aggression.
      The powder blue ones look gorgeous though!

      To answer your question, you can put together several types of Gourami’s with your volume of aquarium. However, you will need more surface plants. In your configuration there will be battles as there is only one place to nest.

      Stunning tank, mate! with the fish mostly occupying the open space I'd say add a few tire track eels - they're from Asia, go well with your fish, and they love to stick their hilarious sock puppet faces out of dense vegetation and look around, so they'd fill a space that's unused in there so far. Trust me, you're gonna love these guys :)
      Also, look forward to that male gourami taking your plants apart for his soon-to-start construction project.

  • @BlueStreakActual
    @BlueStreakActual 3 года назад +29

    Hey MD,
    I really like the color contrast between the blue of the gouramis and the green of the rest of the tank. That being said though, some of your female bettas still have very noticeable stress stripes to them, namely the blue females. I'd reccomend waiting to see if they clear up for a week or so and if not you may need to return or rehome them, those black stripes on their sides aren't natural and only show up when they're very stressed out.

    • @PinkBlue_Spood
      @PinkBlue_Spood 3 года назад

      Depending on the female betta, they can have stripes in youth or in breeding dress, though some adult females keep their stripes no matter what. They appear young, so I’d say if there’s no visible fin damage or any other signs of stress, keeping them in the aquarium should be okay.

    • @bookwyrm969
      @bookwyrm969 3 года назад +2

      @@PinkBlue_Spood breeding stripes are vertical, and yes juvenile bettas can have these horizontal stripes but they should eventually fade out. What worries me is that the blue female isn't as brightly colored and has very dark horizontal stripes

    I understand from some comments re clams, you need to culture "green" water to feed them, otherwise they are doomed to starvation sooner or later. Your filters are taking out what it needs. But such an interesting critter....

    • @taylortisaac
      @taylortisaac 3 года назад +1

      Filters can’t take out green water. Only UV sterilization or lack of light can get rid of green water (which is phytoplankton). So really the problem is he doesn’t have enough hours/intensity of light to culture phytoplankton. Excess nutrients also fuel the phytoplankton - his plants are using those up.

    Hi MD! There are two things I'd like to mention: 1. According to the amazon, the plant weights are 100% lead. If that turns out to be true, I would reconsider using them, especially when trying to breed. 2. Horizontal stripes on bettas are usually an indicator for stress. I don't know if they are generally more visible on females, but just to make sure I would suggest putting them into separate tanks for a few days and see if they still have them. If they keep them, everything's fine but if they disappear, it's probably because they were stressed out by each other when they shared a tank.

    From what I understand, male powder blue gouramis can be very aggressive, with their other males as well as with other fish. Cory from Aquarium Co-op, from what I recall, doesn't stock these males in his fish store, he only stocks the females...

    I've kept gourami for almost 10 years now. You have the space for more dwarf species but I would definitely go for honey gourami. On the sad side I would also look into dwarf gourami disease. Its pretty common. You won't find it in the honey as much but the powder blue and the reds its common. You could also go with chocolate gourami if you can find them. They're stunning fish.
    However MD, one more thing that's important to understand is gouramis mating can be rough on the females. The males get...enthusiastic, and sometimes will nip fins of the females. If that's the case just separate them for a while.
    Tl/dr you can get more bro.

    I've had all kinds of Gouramis together...but I just found the joy of Ghost bloodfin tetras..they may look good in that tank.. Gouramis can fight sometimes...not had that myself...

    I have a powder blue dwarf gourami and an opaline gourami in a 55g and they do just fine. The opaline gourami is a lot bigger and does boss around but they have their own territory and can be around each other. Really peaceful impressive fish you’ll love the powder blue Gouramis. They tend to bulk up and get really stocky lmao.

I found one on ebay but looks much different than yours. Or I could buy a bit from you since you have mountain off it.

    I’m currently running a 20 gallon long tank with two male gouramis, one a blue and one a flame. They’re an odd pair. They have their own established sides of the tank but have no issues hanging out next to each other and chilling. But when I go to feed them they start “arguing” and will chase one another away from the food in turn. Surprisingly neither has actually nipped the other, I’ve checked their fins almost daily and they are both in fine shape. Very entertaining to watch and their colors contrast beautifully.

    MD, if you're not sure what to do with all the pearlweed after you've cut it off, why not sell it to local fishkeepers? On a site like gumtree/facebook.

    In my local fish store they only sell the white one(they still gigantic) and the black gourami(this type is the one that can grow really big and usually people usually eat them when they reach 50-80cm

    How about taking a polystyrene box with you when going to collect your new fish. It's much safer, more secure, it'll help keep the temperature the same, it'll keep the fish dark so they'll hopefully stress less and you can still put a seatbelt on it :)

    I want to ask if it doesn't use CO2, how come the plants are fertile? What's the water temperature? how many ppm of water? how much pH ... so that the plants are fertile?

    All dwarf gourami are functionally the same fish. Most females are all the same colors, but the males have a lot of variance. I've found that males actually do fairly well together, moreso than with larger gourami. I did 2 males and 3 females in a 29 gallon aquarium with no issues.

    I got a single dwarf gourami as centerpiece fish in my 26 litre tank with some ember tetras. How do you differentiate the males from the females? They look all the same in the aquarium shop I bought it from.

  • @LusioEcarts

    I had the Blue Gouramis (the bigger ones.. not the dwarfs).. and this fish is quite territorial (aggressive). The dwarf ones might be too so the ratio you have now its fine. Don't add more and especially not have 2 maIes (cuz there is a high chance for them to fight).

    I have a single male powder Blue Gourami. It truly does stand out in the tank as a feature fish. My tank isn't big enough for more than one though, but he seems happy enough with the other fish in the tank. Always exploring for food.

    Very good choice, although I would not mix them with other Gouramis. Believe it or not, the aquarium cannot be planted too dense for these fish! If you want them to build bubble nests and to breed, avoid surface currents and add floating plants.

    I don't get Dwarf Gourami anymore, because so many of them have DGIV and just die after a short while. Has happened twice in a row for me, with no other fish deaths in the tank (so can rule out water quality etc)
