    Time to wrap up this marathon with an episode of Remake or Rebreak. This time, we'll be comparing the Dreamcast version of both Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 to their GameCube and seventh gen digital rereleases. Are these ports really as bad or as good as people say? Let's find out.

    Remake or Rebreak Scores:
    1- Rebreak: Fails to resurrect the same quality standard as its original due to incompetent design, technical failures, etc.
    2- Re-Meh: Not quite as good as the original, but a relatively competent recreation that is still very playable. Fails to add any new content or fix problems of the original.
    3- Remake: Superior to the original, but not necessarily worth it if you already own the original. May add some new content or fix some problems of the original.
    4- Replace: So much better than the original, that there's no reason for new players to own the original. Not only a faithful recreation of the original, but fixes old bugs and adds new content.

    *To my fans:*
    Let's try to keep the Egoraptor bashing to a minimum. In retrospect, I went too far in calling him "a troll to the Sonic fandom." I know better than that, but I was so wrapped up in what I was talking about that I went against my best judgment. I have my grievances with how he treats the franchise and the community, but this mostly relates to the ideas he espouses rather than my impressions of Arin as a person. If you're on the same page, I'd like to request that you focus on counterarguing his claims rather than calling him names or otherwise targeting him. This should be about challenging ideas about Sonic, not about bullying people. *Thank you.*

      That loop clipping to death glitch is actually pretty easy to trigger. At that part, the road curves to the right, so it's completely understandable for a player to tilt the analog stick right to run along the curve. But it's exactly that that triggers the clipping glitch, I've tested it a couple of times myself. While I generally don't like Arin's opinion on games, especially Sonic, I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he probably tried tilting the analog stick right and the glitch happened. And honestly, that happening to a player at the very beginning of the game is pretty bad and can leave a very negative impression on a player for the remainder of the game. So then much smaller glitches and hiccups will seem bigger than they are and a testament to the game's overall quality.

    The GameCube analogy stick still senses full 360 input but the octagon base around the stick tends to force it into one of eight directions when you push it all the way. Its a doubled edged sword, it makes smooth 360 turns harder to do but does make it easier to keep your character in a straight line.

    • @BrySkye
      @BrySkye 6 лет назад +28

      Right. I was a bit perplexed when the phrase "analogue technology" started getting mentioned. The Gamecube controller shell (and Wii Nunchuck) simply has indentations for the 8 key directions.
      But you'll still get full range of movement between those indentations.

    • @TheMGMfan
      @TheMGMfan 4 года назад +7

      I find that while it is possible for the shape of the bezel to force the GameCube's analog stick into one of its corners, it isn't that easy for it to do so; as such, 360 degree movement is barely harder to do with the GameCube's stick than any analog stick with the standard circular bezel, if at all, and it's not enough of a drawback to offset the advantage of more easily moving your character in a straight line. I can understand Nintendo possibly thinking it was worth making the bezels for analog sticks on the 3DS onward a circle like everyone else, and I don't think it was a bad decision, but I think it would be great if the brought it back with the controller for their next system. However, as someone who is very much acquainted with this controller, I can say with certainty that 360 degree movement is very much existant with its analog sticks and in my opinion very easy to do so, though I can see some, especially those whk aren't used to it, having trouble doing so.

      Baylor Diamond eh, but this isn’t a boost game. You’re not just flying past the whole stage; even in sonic levels there are slower platforming sections, not to mention the hub world. UPDATE 6/13/2018:
    I have relisted this video by popular demand. A surprising number of people had asked why I had taken this video down, which means people still want to watch it.
    I had taken it down in response to new information compiled by the folks responsible for Better Sonic Adventure DX (Better SADX), a mod of the PC version of Sonic Adventure which restores many Dreamcast exclusive textures and other elements to the PC version, which is itself based on the GameCube port.
    At the time of writing of this review, neither Better SADX nor this document existed.
    For those interested in a detailed breakdown of things that were altered or removed in the GameCube transition, check out the linked document below. I was surprised at how major changes were in terms of texture resolution and lighting, as well as tiny, subtle differences to enemy AI and boss design. Frankly, I never picked up on any of these differences on my own and it makes this review come off as extremely dated. Nevertheless, I have no plans to redo this video any time soon, so I might as well leave it up for the Sonic Adventure 2 Battle half of the video if nothing else.
    dreamcastify.unreliable.network/
    For the ultimate Sonic Adventure 1 experience, I highly recommend Better SADX, as it best combines the individual advantages of all three versions and restores much of what was cut in the GameCube conversion, including higher resolution textures and the original lighting engine.

      Huh, dident expect this, thx anyways, I think that will make the pc version of SA1 more playable since i bought before SLW, SADX and SA2, but i refunded all of them becuase 1; sonic lost world dident meet my expectations and 2; sonic adventure 1 and 2 would mostly crash for no reason, i do have the GTX 960 and tried installing them to both the C and E discs, but that dident do much either. So i hope Maybe Better SADX will solve those problem and a lot more. again Thx anyways.

    I'll gladly give you a like just for taking a dump on Egoraptor's opinions.
    Aside from everything you mentioned, one thing I've always wanted to be implemented into the Sonic Adventure remakes (particularly the first game) is the ability to play as Super Sonic in normal levels. I can understand not implementing that in SA2, but SA1's Super Sonic was clearly made with regular platforming and running around in mind. DX was their second chance to put that in and I was always disappointed they didn't go through with it, and even more disappointed when the HD version didn't.
    Also, slightly lowering the decibels of the background music and (most importantly) spacing out the dialogue clips so characters don't interrupt one another would have been greatly appreciated in SA2.

    • @beta511ee4
      @beta511ee4 8 лет назад

      How can you tell the decibels were increased (and even then, how many were increased)?

    • @Lakitu1134
      @Lakitu1134 8 лет назад +2

      Skeeter Mania I didn't say they were increased, I'm saying just lower them in general. I've only played two versions of this game (neither of which are the DC version) and in both they seemed a little too loud to me.

    • @TheArceusftw

      +Lakitu1134 Well an unused voice clip for Tikal(The glowing orb that gives you hints) mentions Gathering 50 rings and pressing the action button while jumping to turn into Super Sonic. This implied that in Super sonic was able to be playable outside of the Perfect chaos battle but was scrapped because the level geometry probably wasn't meant for Super sonic.

Some big youtubers that don't even like the game to begin with put up half-assed opinionated reviews without even doing the appropriate amount of research just to fuck with people because they enjoy profiting off of belittling people that enjoy things that they don't. Your reviews of these games are far more comprehensive than just about anything Arin could ever hope to shit out, because he thinks he knows way more than he really does, and it's been pretty much confirmed that he fucks with the Sonic fanbase and blows the series' missteps out of proportion for views and cheap laughs. *Just a clarification on what I mean by texture draw distance:*
    It's only an issue if you're playing these games with traditional RCA composite (Yellow, Red, White) cables. If you've ever played a Dreamcast game this way, you'll know that the textures get really blurry after they get a certain distance away from the camera. The GameCube doesn't have this pop in issue at all; the textures look great from any distance even with RCA cables.
    At the end of the day, I recommend you purchase a set of Tomee VGA cables for your Dreamcast, and a pair of Wii Component Cables for your Wii, so that you can play the DC and GCN versions of this game in 480 progressive scan resolution. When you do, the Dreamcast's issues with blurry textures disappear completely, and the game will look a hell of a lot better on your HDTV. I'm not sure why, but when DC footage is converted to interlaced analog, the texture draw distance just goes to shit.
    Just thought that was worth clarifying.

    • @BladeBlur
      @BladeBlur 8 лет назад +6

      I've seen The Golden Bolt's discussion of the Steam port's Dreamcast conversion mod, and he actually brings up that despite the "Director's Cut" subtitle, the GameCube port had a different director from the regular Dreamcast title, since Takashi Izuka was busy losing weight directing Sonic Heroes. Does this explain the issues that prevent DX from being a Replace game, or the factors that put it up to a Remake score? Well, it depends on who you ask, but there's a chance it could explain it.

    I am not sure if a previous comment brought it up, considering there are 582 of them, but what about the framerate in DX and the HD port of Sonic Adventure? That was to me one of the best upgrades for that version since it moved smoothly just like the sequel.
    Also another problem I had with the DC version relates to the loading time, is the fact in the adventure fields every time you enter a new area the music resets, which isn't that big of a deal when you think about it, but when you go from the main street of Station Square, to the Hotel, to the Casino, it becomes rather daunting. Nitpick? Yeah, but it still annoying.
    Lastly, no clue why they changed the text font in the HD version compared to the DC and GC version.
    Other than that nicely done video. I personally don't mind the issues with the cutscenes (a product of the times, I can live with it), but I had fun watching this.

I mean in the Ocarina of Time playthrough, Arin goes on about how he dislikes Ocarina, but can respect it for how revolutionary it was for it's time (1998). However, he never acknowledged the fact that Sonic Adventure ALSO came out in the same year; never detailing how amazing it was for it's time BUT INSTEAD judged every minute problem it had. Theres actually more things about the cutscenes, I dont quite remember them all but a video I watched detailing why The cutscenes in Battle are inferior to the dreamcast version, one of the biggest reasons was something along the lines of tne Dreamcast being able to arbitrarily layer graphics.
    Like things in Battle were layered in the wrong order, so lighting was awful and some effects were missing entirely bc they were behind other things.
    Vid is "Why SA2B's cutscenes suck" for anyone wanting to learn why the cutscenes were wonky in Battle

    Just an observation, but you forgot to mention the fact that the DX port of Sonic Adventure runs at 60 FPS as opposed to 30 FPS in the original Dreamcast version, which is an automatic win in my books. Sonic Adventure 2 runs at 60 FPS, regardless of version. Still, great video as always.

      That, and my Elgato model can only record in 30 fps anyway, so I wouldn't have been able to tell from the footage. My editor is also finickey about rendering in 60.

    • @beta511ee4
      @beta511ee4 8 лет назад +1

      +ExoParadigmGamer That frame rate statement is a partial truth. It is true that the frame rate is much quicker in the DX version, but it's also pretty inconsistent. Because of this, it has led to people calling the DC version more stable.

    • @MariusUrucu
      @MariusUrucu 8 лет назад

      +Skeeter Mania I didn't knew the framerate was inconsistent on the Gamecube version of SADX, knowing how much more powerful the system is compared to the Dreamcast. If that's the case, then a game locked 30 FPS is probably better than a game that jumps from 30 to 60 FPS sporadically.
      I don't know though, I played the Gamecube version via Dolphin Emulator with 60 FPS all the time and assumed the game ran the same on the original hardware. Probably the game was brute forced when playing on Dolphin. I also own the Steam Version, but still prefer the GC version, mainly for the graphical aesthetic. The digital re-release looks worse compared to the GC or even Dreamcast version (especially the water, which looks horrible compared to the previous versions). Also you can hack the game on Dolphin to run in widescreen, though it's a bit glitchy, especially near water.

    • @lpnp9477
      @lpnp9477 6 лет назад

      Marius Urucu Depends, for me I feel much more liberated by a game running at 45-60 fps than a game locked to 30. It depends heavily on frame pacing though. If variable frame rates are not accounted for and it gets stuttery or slow below 60 then yeah I'd rather have it capped at 30.

    I know this isn't exactly a fair comparison, but the best versions of both Sonic Adventure games are the Steam releases with mods. Both games can run on potatoes, so even a lower end laptop of today's age could probably run them no problem, and modding the games is as easy as a google search and a few clicks. There are mods for SADX that finally give it 16:9 support at any resolution your monitor can handle, as well as customization for those who prefer the lighting engine/character models/textures of the Dreamcast original. Adding mods is as easy as dragging and dropping files into a folder, and checking them in the Mod Loader. You can even reimplement cut features like Super Sonic in regular stages.
    I know this video is old, but I'm a huge fan of you Exo, and I've probably watched all of your reviews at least 10 times or more. Also, am I the only one who finds it hilarious how poorly the comment at 1:56 has aged?

We know it's totally analog because in Melee you can do slight angles with Firebird and Firefox recoveries, rather than just 8 directions it can go 352 if you hold the control stick correctly.

    OK about this 'broken' radar.
    It's not broken, it was deliberate. While it could be called padding, it fleshed out the hunting stages to a reasonable length. The adventure 1 treasure hunting levels could all be beaten in rediculous times and had no aim except fro speed. The new radar compliments the score based ranking as many times collecting an emerald piece that was not on the radar had a score insentive as it would break the time gap between collecting radar emeralds. It was also more fun to explore and come across a literal hidden gem and the sense of acomplishment that came with it. It does seem like a lot of people hate it because it was second. If the original adventures radar behaved that way noone would have a problem with it, certainly not the butthurt from a lot of people.

    All I ever hated about Sonic Adventure 2: Battle was the fact that each Chao Garden's size were all decreased, compared to their original size in the Dreamcast release, beyond that, I think the game was much better than the original with the introduction of the Tiny Chao Garden, something that the PC and it's re-release on consoles cannot simply bring back due to the way it works, unless they wanted to pretty much defeat the whole purpose of it by emulating it in-game somehow. Honestly though I find the most fascinating thing about the Adventure games as a whole was the introduction of Chao and how much the Chao Garden changed from it's original conception in the first game, all the way to the improvements and additions they brought with Battle. I still wonder if the Chao Playground was originally supposed to have online connectivity to it, if that's true it could be why they never attempted to include it in Battle like they did with the Black Market. Woulda been cool if you could have traded Chao via online connectivity, something like the GTS that exists in Pokemon games nowadays, possibly.

    I noticed something else while I played the Dreamcast version of SA1. It could just be me, but I swear to God Sonic accelerates much faster in the original version. The DX version feels as if he has a bit more weight to him, which isn't a bad thing, but I feel it's worth mentioning. And there's something... satisfying about controlling Sonic and friends with a Gamecube controller.
    But the PS3 port? Nah man, from my experience it's a rebreak. This is a port of a port of a port of a Dreamcast game and I think it shows. I noticed way more glitches and weird collision detection in this port, and something is off with the controls. I can't put my finger on it but it doesn't feel as responsive as the Gamecube or Dreamcast controller. And I've played all three back to back to back as well.
    I still think the Dreamcast version is the best version, but I can see why some may find the Gamecube version better. Better visuals, more content, skipping cutscenes, etc. It's a great remake. But I still stand that the PS3/360 ports are poor.
    As for SA2? Yeah, I think the GC port is the better version. The digital version of SA2 is better than SA1's, yes, but I still found there to be more collision detection issues than there was in the GC or Dreamcast version. Nowhere near as much as SA1's HD port, but it was still noticeable to me.
    And the funny thing, I find anyway, is that the whole Sonic Adventure hate bandwagon started around the time these two ports came out. And when I hear a big time RUclipsr talk about them, they always say something along the lines of: "I remember this being a good game, but it's so glitchy", while showing footage of the HD version.
    Hey, maybe I am crazy, but I've played all three versions religiously. But I'm glad you didn't notice the problems I noticed with the HD ports.
    And dude, I can't thank you enough for sticking up for these games. You, Nick and Clement are awesome people for doing so, and I hope this can be the beginning of the end of the Sonic Adventure hate bandwagon.
    Sorry for the long comment, I had a lot to say! But thanks again for the awesome series of videos. MAD RESPECT YO

      +The Ryan Sucks At Video Games It's the framerate difference between the original and the DX port. The original runs at 30 FPS, while the DX port runs at 60 FPS. So, because of the lower framerate of the original, it makes the illusion of higher acceleration, a thing I noticed as well on racing games too. The DX port being at higher framerate, it makes the acceleration more smoother. At least that's the theory I have...
      And I agree with you, the GC games are better than the digital re-releases, especially Sonic Adventure 2, because of the horrid sound mixing. And you can even mod the game to run in widescreen via Dolphin Emulator, as well as playing it with a controller of your preference (mine is the Xbox 360 Controller).

    Amy’s eyes are in the opsite place there supposed to be in game cube in the gameplay the characters are much higher poly than in the cutscenes. But they then sometimes use higher poly model if you look closely. Transparency has probloms too.

    I recently got a Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure for it and I will say I think the Dreamcast version has more glitches than the Gamecube version because I have had a lot more instances of me dying from clipping through the level geometry than on Gamecube, mostly in regards to using the Light Speed Dash/Attack. I actually clipped through the wall of the Station Square Chao Garden due to using the Light Dash thanks to the Dreamcast version not restricting use of the action button to Chao Garden only actions

    I personally love SADX and SA2:B
    I got addicted to the chao garden, so much so that I found Phantasy Star Online Episode 1&2 and Sonic Advance, to get everything I could get out of the game. Including the Tails chao. I actually have my Golden Speed chao saved to Sonic Advance, because it dies after 5 seconds in SA2:B lol.
    Anyway, even though its a year late. Great review and I'm glad someone else enjoys these games so much. I wish Sega would realize this and make Sonic Adventure 3, and finally bring back chao gardens!

    I always thought the GC version of adventure 2 controlled a lot better. I have the Dreamcast version and I always lose control on sonic.

    The DC control stick is not better than the GCN control stick, Sega just didn't utilize the extent of what it was capable of.

    I'd happily watch a 50 minute video from you, but I do think it's best you do seperate videos of reviews of games themselves and then their differences between versions so good call.

    Hey man, I have a couple of "requests/ideas" for Remake or Rebreak... Not expecting you to do it, but I'd love to at least hear back.
    FInal Fantasy IV, GBA/PSP remake vs DS/Android/iOS remake. Two different remakes of the same game, with different content and directions... which one do you think is best... Heck, the GBA Versions of all the Final Fantasy's would be cool.
    Megaman Collection and Megaman X collection... especially would go well as a "Just the remake, not individual reviews," hell the GBA version of Megaman and Bass, (I disagree with Somecallmejohnny on the game, though I respect his opinion)
    Kirby's Adventure vs Nightmare in Dreamland, and maybe KSS vs KSSU.
    Personally man, I have no problem if you make a long review, I really enjoy your work. I'd prefer shorter videos if it just lead to more vids :) , but it's no problem at all if a video runs long.

    Last week, I commented about the lip-syncing. gripe... and I'm following up.. I've been playing SA2 on my steam port lately.. and, for curiosity, I set the narration voice setting to the Japanese audio track. And I can confirm that the lip-syncing is consistent to the Japanese audio, not the English. The game's original audio was the japanese track, the English audio is a dub-over.

    I completely agree with you about SA1's DX version. It's still better than the Dreamcast original, but it was too rushed to do the good job it should've. SA1 isn't nearly as glitchy as people make it out to be; yes, while it is full of glitches, you have to be trying to pull off most of them, and like with Ocarina of Time, most of them are helpful, not an inconvenience. So if anything, I love it for its " glitchiness. " And you're right, the Battle version is better, just not as much. I didn't know about the Rouge cutscene being a little different between versions. I completely agree with your concluding statements! The Adventure games are so underrated by kids these days.

    Sonic Adventure DX was also technically an HD remaster, since the PC version can run in HD.

    Edit: Oops, I found his comment after writing this. Glad he has reflected on this video 👍
    This video is definitely lacking in terms of identifying the ways in which the DX ports break things. I feel this would have greatly benefitted from some quick online research into what changed visually between each version, as there is much documentation on how each version screwed up visual effects. It's not just a loop-de-loop, it's much of the game's visual identity. Cybershell's newer video addresses this. I know it's been 8 years and you usually nail it on these so I can't be too critical lol

    It seems like every year or so, people will find something "wrong" with a random Sonic game, and possibly say another one isn't so bad. This time it's the adventure games and Heroes. Who knows, next time it could be Sonic Colors and Generations for some reason either made up or overly exaggerated.

      +The Untitled Team Actually...I have seen the more lighthearted tone of Sonic Colors go under fire (I think) because the story is "trying too hard to appeal to the kiddies" or something.
      Personally, I think it's better to have a simple story with cheesy jokes (Sonic Colors) than a complex story riddled with plot holes and Out Of Character
      moments (Sonic 2006).

    To be fair, I consider the PSN versions to be ports of the Sonic Adventure games (specifically the Gamecube versions) rather than remakes so it kinda makes sense that they didn't really do any touching up on them.
