Harcion Gaming A decent way to farm Hearts and Rupees in an emergency. :1 I consider the Shovel to be an underrated item in the franchise as a whole. :3
I think the sword swinging noises are fine in games with 3D animation; a sword swing in those games takes a lot longer than the 2D swings. But spamming the sword button in a 2D game is SO quick that you’re getting far more Yells Per Second (YPS if you will) than in a 3D game where spamming the sword button would get you maybe 3 YPS
I can understand in the case that someone used to the SNES version gets a little annoyed at Link's constant mouth noises in the GBA game, but to say it's a flaw that ruins the game goes a little too far.
electricmastro I don't mind the voice myself, but I fail to understand how not wanting to play a game where you constantly listen to a kid's rapid-fire YAHs (when previously there weren't any) should be considered unreasonable.
I will say that it does seem like the 2D zeldas are faster paced in combat, so the repeated clip probably plays faster, and you def use the sword to remove bushes more often (because they block your path), so it doesn't quite have the some restraint as 3D zelda.
+electricmastro But it is kinda anoying. A real game ruining thing is yoshis voice since yoshis story. I cant stand it. Yoshis island was perfect as it was, that stupid voice in the remake though...it grinds my gears...
+ExoParadigmGamer Next time could you do remake rebreak of final fantasy 4, 5, and 6 since they were ported yet remade like the graphics and sound to the GBA?
No. Not to sound like a jerk, or sound like I hate the GBA (I love the system to death!) ,but They really are pretty much ports. They change absolutely NOTHING that should be noticeable. An RoR would be AMAZING for The first 7 FF games, but I think they should be the PSP/IOS/PC/Android Remakes.
I’m sure this is buried below, but you don’t need the Cane of Somaria to beat the Ice Palace. You are supposed to do a circuitous route back through the dungeon and you push a block from the floor above onto the switch to access the boss.
Something to keep in mind with the original LoZ - It shipped with a map that showed most the locations of most of the dungeons. In level 5, you could get the whistle, which would take you to the entrance of the different dungeons. Without that map, you absolutely need a guide. And then there's the brute force method of burning every single bush, bombing every single thing, and exploring that way - which had enough stuff hidden underneath things that you could potentially stumble upon one of these secrets, which would lead you to explore others. Granted, I'm not saying that it was perfect, but that also was part of what made it as unique a play experience as it was.
Best thing about the GBA version for me: the save system. Any door you exit is you spawn point, instead of just your house or sanctuary. Also, I loved the review, but couldn't stop from smirking when you did things with your hands! Great video! I can't help but think about your hands though...reminded me of the interviews in Talladega Nights. Awesome!! Thanks for the upload! (I know I'm 2 years late) =)
same. and the other thing about the gba version, is that when you step in puddles, it is not as loud and echoey like the snes. the snes is loud for me!
I respectfully disagree with your definition of remakes and ports. Metroid Zero Mission in example is a full remake of the first Metroid, and Ocarina of Time 3D is also a remake of the original game even if it focuses on the remade graphics. Although I agree it can be hard to define some games like The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD, "Remaster" seems to be the most accurate term. Virtual Console are emulation, not ports, and A Link To the Past on GBA is definitely a port with bonus content. NES Classics on GBA are also ports :)
Also Ratchet and Clank on the PS4 is a remake of the PS2 game. While the PS3 HD collection are just ports of the original. And let's not forget Resident Evil on the Gamecube.
I can see why people wouldn't like the voice clips. In Oot, you generally don't fight too many enemies that take a lot of swings and you don't meet enemies as frequently it seems. In LttP, the combat seems a bit more fast paced so you'll most likely mash the attack button more and hear the voice more often I guess.
You're goddang right. It's because button mashing to attack. In OoT, 90% of the time you can run past all the enemies. Also, enemies have more variety in how you kill them, meaning you don't hear the annoying voice clips as much.
@@chaoskiller6084 more variety? In oot, the main weapons that can kill enemies (outside of ur sword) is really only bombs/bombchu, arrows, and megaton hammer, (granted theres certain enemies that dies to say the hookshot/boomerang/deku nuts/slingshot but those are far and few between). If i am not mistaken u don't hear the voice clips with the arrows and hammer and i wanna say slingshot but u do with the bombs wen throwing. Not much variety there in how to kill enemies. Whereas in lttp, u not only have arrows, bombs, and hammer to attk enemies u have the fire/ice rod to attk enemies, the medallions. Only weapon that doesn't kill enemies in lttp where it kills certain enemies in oot is the boomerang (there might be one or 2 enemies such as keese that dies with the boomerang but i honestly don't use it enough to know). And if ur skilled enough u can even kill some enemies with the cane of somaria so i'd argue theres more variety to kill enemies. Granted once u get the 3rd best sword weapons outside of bombs and the hammer are weaker than the sword so not much reason to use em (though same can be said abt biggoron sword in oot). Now it is possible to get the silver arrows by beating just 3 dungeons in the dark world (dark world is def not linear u can beat the dungeons in any order given u have the weapons/skill/knowledge) which straight up demolishes any non shielded enemy to the point where the sword gets redundant.
@@lolidemon3163 Sure, there might be more weapons, but they're rarely required if ever. Plus, you literally said that you can get the best weapons really early. So what's the point of using the weaker weapons if you can use your sword every fight?
I've played this game dozens and dozens of times since I was a kid, it's my favorite zelda game. I had NO IDEA about the "antifaeries" being able to be turned into faeries with the magic powder!!!
The pink hair in ALTtP is because there was an glitch in the sprite, making the hair pink. They could actually fix it in the GBA remake, but they decided to make it pink like the SNES version.
Yeah it's not a glitch, it was a limitation of the amount of colors they could use on the character model. And the pink is from his transformation into a pink bunny. It makes me wonder why the bunny had to be pink, if the developers decided to make the bunny blonde that likely would have solved the issue
This is completely incorrect. The pink hair was a deliberate design decision. The proof is that in the concept art pre the making of the game, Link had pink hair! Do you think they would have just left in a glitch through the entire year or so of development and never thought to change it despite it being a super easy fix that even many amateur romhackers can do? Of course not. They left it in because they chose it to be pink in the first place Here's a magazine interview with Miyamoto prior to the release of the game showing some of the concept art for Link, with, guess what, pink hair!: i.warosu.org/data/vr/img/0014/19/1393274654463.jpg
You don't need the Cane of Somaria in order to beat Ice Palace. Having the Cane, however, makes this dungeon easier and faster. Getting the Cane _first_ feels almost like cheating.
Glad I could provide some voicework to help out here! Really great review, and like you I love A Link to the Past, but A Link Between Worlds will always be my favorite.
You missed a few changes to the gameplay in the gba version. The hammer can destroy rocks and the master sword can break pots and skulls and it can slice signs. It may not be much, but it's worth mentioning. EDIT: you can also pick up signs and break pots and skulls with arrows and the magic boomerang can cut down bushes.
+James Third Minish Cap is actually my favourite 2d Zelda game. It has great music, awesome items and dungeons, and two really unique and fun mechanic.
PixlYoshi Still, it would have been nice if Nintendo EAD had made the last 2D Zelda, not Capcom. Minish Cap's best music consisted of remixes from other games... (cough AoL Battle theme, cough Falling Rain, cough ahem Underworld bleh cough hack ugh.) Boss design made no sense. The dungeons were okay, and the game didn't control very well imo...
+Zachary Erickson (twilightwindwaker) Yeah, they did, but that isn't saying much when you consider that Nintendo EAD made ALL of the BEST 2d Zeldas, not just SOME of the better 2d ones. LttP, LA, FSA, and of course the original for NES are all better than OoX-MC by most people's standards. Any Zelda is good by default, it's just how good.
I wish Nintendo would release a remake of Zelda 1&2 already. If all 3 Super Mario Bros. can get one then I don't see why these games can't get one either. :/
oscarzx n Yeah. I've seen it. Though, I don't really count that seeing as how it's a Japan exclusive and something that's not even available to them anymore. A world wide release is what I'm looking for.
Whether it was a Japan exclusive or not, it's still an official remake. Although I agree a worldwide release would be nice. Could have a 30th Anniversary remake on Wii u while we wait on Breath of the Wild.
A remake is when a game is made, again, from the ground up. Zelda 3 on GBA wasn't made from the ground-up, it is a port as the code of the SNES version was re-used for different hardware (and obviously changed to accommodate the transition). It would be monumental waste of resources and times to remake a game so precisely instead of simply porting it. Virtual console games aren't ports, they are emulations. Emulation is when compiled code is decompiled and then recompiled into a different format in real-time.
Not to mention that there are program errors and design mistakes still present in the game. Ganon is not supposed to be killed without the silver arrows for example. That is a fault in the hit detection.
3 years late but... No, some GBA games could work with just a single cartridge. Advanced Wars, Super Mario Advance (I think all of them), Chu Chu Rocket, F-Zero, Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland, Sonic Advance, and Bomberman Tournament are some good examples.
There's no such thing as " _too open ended_ " - There's only people who get overwhelmed when they are presented with choices. 19:35 - Or... Perhaps you're not.. good? Could that be it? Seriously, I just hear " _This is bad because I can't do this_ ". 21:20 - Yes, that was how it was back then. Duh. 22:50 - You... Misinterpreted that completely. The Triforce transforms him into Ganon because that's what the evil in his heart reflects. He didn't desire to become Ganon, only powerful. 23:43 - STOP STOP STOP. It's not Silver Arrows from the first game. It's just - SILVER ARROWS - , Silver being well-known in stories and myths and the likes for having magical powers such as killing Werewolves and other things. 24:04 - If you love this, I highly recommend you to play BS Zelda: Ancient Stone Tablets. The greatest Zelda game never re-released on Super Nintendo that was only playable on Broadcast satellite in Japan - but it got a translation patch and rom of course. That's one of my top 10 favorite final boss to endings of all time. In the Timeline, BS Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets takes place at the same time of Link's Awakening, since Link is away from Hyrule at that time and thus a new hero must be called.
I love that game too (DX edition). Bad thing it was in English here in Spain too, so I didn't understand anything as a kid, but I could beat it after some years.
JymSwis not really. in the end, there's a possibility that everything in the dream, although a dream, was real. You can see the wind fish flying over you, and MArin as a seagull if you never die. Also, who knows if the dream world inside the wind fish is an universe on itself?
It's outright unavailable even if you're willing to pay; this means the only way to purchase and play Four Swords is on the gba Which helps my argument the DSiware version isn't canon and the GBA ALttP is more canon than the SNES one
21:00 Actually.... not true. You can play the Mario Bros game with just one cart. Now, why LoZ on GBA doesn't have it? I can only assume its because of the completion data for the game, but I seriously don't understand why it couldn't be done with the initial GBA 'download' feature. Must be memory restrictions.
+Flame Soulis I guess all the GBA games I've ever wanted to play multiplayer (like this and Nightmare in Dreamland) all required multiple game paks, so I just assumed there was no download play feature. The download play feature wasn't even that great for the DS, so I can't imagine it's better on the GBA. Thanks for the info, though.
Yeah. Without it, the link up feature for Four Sword Adventures wouldn't work so well. The time it took to load the games wasn't too bad either, but then again, it had direct hookup instead of wireless, so that may help.
@@ExoParadigmGamer Ancient comment but F Zero GP Legend also had multi-player with 1 cartridge. Unfortunately it only offered a very basic demo-like version of the game
For full clarity, the GBA had only 256 kilobytes of RAM to work with. DS Download Play had the relative freedom of 4 megabytes (16x the GBA) and it STILL sucked.
A Link to the Past was the first Zelda game I ever played and it’s easily my favorite in the series. I love the gameplay, the music, and the story! I even love Link’s pink hair! 😁
'East-most Peninsula is the secret' is not "Engrish" as a six-year-old child, I had no problem understanding that this clue meant I should go to a peninsula on the east side of the map, so I don't know what your problem was
11clock I think the education system was different when I was younger. The words I didn't understand, I would just ask an adult. Either way, I hate when people say this game is so cryptic that you can't beat it without a guide. How the hell does he think that every kid in the 80s beat this game? We didn't have the internet to run to to tell us how to do it. It was trial and error - those were good times 😎
I'm 13 yo, and I'm not a big Zelda fan. Yet my friends (never knew what Zelda was before I told them) and I enjoy playing the original LoZ on an online emulator at school. I think I like it more than other Zelda games.
I played Four Swords and finished ALTTP, but you need to collect 10 medals to get to the FS palace. I didn't know before I moved to the DS, that doesn't have a multiplayer cable input... Great job, Nintendo!
If there’s any proof that egoraptor is light on the raptor and heavy on the ego, it the game grumps playthrough of skyward sword. Hours and hours of Dan begin Arin to stop bitching and actually enjoy the good things about the game, and Arin purposefully refusing to understand that he is using the controller wrong.
You don't need the cane for the ice dungeon on the nes version it just takes some creative movements in the dungeon to reach the other side to drop a block that will cover the switch
+Mandatorial Annoying dungeon design, constant swapping of items for the power bracelet... and that's about it. They have their strengths, to be sure, but those two flaws really drag down the experience for me. Perhaps with another playthrough, that impression could change, but that's where I stand at the moment.
+Ammako I can see why that would be annoying. I think ocarina is a good game, but I don't like how much walking there is from one place to another in hyrule field. I like everything else but that, the waiting thing egoraptor talks about, and navi. Other than that I would say that ocarina is tied for my favorite 3d zelda game with windwaker (although I have not played twilight princess).
Since LTTP and Link's Awakening were my introductions to the Zelda franchise, the item swapping thing doesn't bother me at all. I've always considered it a core staple of the series and just something to expect when playing a Zelda game. As a result it doesn't bug me at all and makes the GBC games among my favorites in the series, along with LTTP and LBW. Now that I think of it, that's probably just one more reason BOTW is the one 3D Zelda I like. Its design choices harken a lot more to the 2D games than to OOT, MM, WW, TP, or SS.
You're not intended to use the Cane of Somaria to weigh down that switch in the original Ice Dungeon. You're supposed to push a block down a hole two floors up, go down one floor, push the block down a hole again, then go down and push the block onto the switch. But navigating the Ice Dungeon to do that puzzle legit is a pain in the ass so using the Cane of Somaria is an easy mode cheat to get through.
Without watching the entire video; the port of Zelda 3 to gameboy was excellent, but you are still dealing with less resolution than the snes, even with the changes made to work with it on GBA.
Friendly Metroid True, but at least the game is playable, and you also have many convenient tweaks like breaking pots with your sword and bow, and other things
Well for its time it was amazing. There hadn't been anything like it to ever show up and the open-ended nature of it was done because of technical limitations as well as to give the player the feeling that they themselves are Link and they are really in this giant quest. It's up to you to figure everything out with no hand-holding happening. All that said though it's still a deeply flawed game and far from perfect.
trip2themoon meh, it was a different time. People drew their own maps and shit as they figured stuff out. And Nintendo power. I can say I loved the original as a kid.
Skyward Sword is amazing. The designs, the environment, the atmosphere, the soundtrack and even the story are all great! Groose is awesome and the dungeons are really good too.
I personally love how squishy link is to damage in ALTTP. Makes for good difficulty. To pay attention to your surroundings and stratagize how to fight enemies. Plus the red mail and later blue mail boosts your defense
Exactly that’s not good design if the game relies so much on trial and error and spending hours at a time bombing random walls until you find something that’s not good design
@@insertnamehere3271 Bombing random walls is the wrong way to go about finding the secret caves. Best to go about it methodically, and make a map (and write notes) detailing your progress. Same goes for burning trees, pushing tombstones, and using the whistle/flute.
@@insertnamehere3271 If you didn't figure out what all the bombable walls had in common, that's on you, but the game is a classic who's formula is still followed to this day for a reason.
You don't like the GBC games? "Link's Awakening" is my all-time Zelda fave! ;_; That ending is one of the first I remember bringing me to the verge of tears.
Instead of "The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword", it was "The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild" that actually made me nearly lose faith in the Zelda series because of the direction that it went despite the game have really good scores (How is that even possible, BTW?). For one reason, the game focuses so much on the story and exploration in open areas that it had less to do with the puzzle-solving, dungeon-exploring, and enemy-slashing that the series has always been known for since the days of the NES; And also, Link doesn't even wear his iconic green duds at all in the game, which I'm surprised didn't upset die-hard fans just like Dante's new hairstyle in the latest game of the Devil May Cry series.
There are 120+ shrines, most of which require you to solve puzzles. I agree it's not the same as dungeons in previous games, but it's something. There are plenty of monsters to fight in BOTW. If that's not enough for you, there's always the Hyrule Warriors games. If you complete all of the non-dlc shrines you get the Tunic, Cap and Trousers of the Wild; ie his iconic green duds. You can also get wearable alternate versions of the green duds from some of the Amiibo, as soon as you complete at least one shrine on the Great Plateau.
You might want to give BOTW another chance, as the sequel *sounds like it will be more up your alley... Advantages would be familiarizing yourself with the word map, Runes, and battle mechanics, before the next one comes out. *According to various websites, it will be more linear and feature full fledged dungeons.
You never needed the can of somalia to finish that dungeon. I thought it was weird so checked my original snes cartridge version. I already finished that dungeon but don't have the cain in my inventory. So... There is another solution to that puzzle i guess. Plus... I don't respect your opinion on the GB and GBC games. Mainly because you just bashed them without argument. The linked gameplay on the GBC games is amazing and I think link's awakening is one of the best Zelda games overall. Why? Because it was the first one to change the setting and characters besides link and the gameplay is still solid for a GB title. I grew up with a gameboy and zelda on the gameboy was FAR ahead of any other gameboy title of the time (except maybe for pokemon but that came later on).
Yes you can do it without the cane, but it's a massive pain. There's a a push block in the room above that can be pushed into a hole which you can then jump down, and from there you can push the block onto the switch. However, block you need to push is blocked by those orange peg barriers, so you need to flip the switch that lowers them, which in the process raises the blue ones that block off the half of the room with the block you need to push. You get around this by coming into the room from the other side (there's an entrance for each side of the room) which requires you to circle around nearly the entire dungeon to reach. Since You don't even need to enter the ice palace and get the dungeon item (it's the blue armor) to complete misery mire, it's much less of a hassle to just head straight for misery mire after thieves town and come back with the cane. Also I completely agree about Link's Awakening and the Oracle games. Those were great. I only played the Oracle games when they released on the virtual console, but I must of completed Link's Awakening 20 as a kid.
24:47 for at least a good reason. This is the post ending dungeon, by then you've mastered the game really, so it's a final test with bonus content as the reward!
I don't think people forgot about the GBA version, but most people probably like the SNES version more because the GBA version is more zoomed in to make up for the small screen and it's too bright due to the GBA not having a light, so it throws the atmosphere of the game off in my opinion.
I agree with some of your points here, but I agree and disagree that this version is bright. What I did was turn down the brightness, and when I went back to the game, it looked actually like the Snes version it may not be as good as the snes version but it's a ok remake at best.
This is actually one of the few SNES remakes for the GBA I bothered with. I purchased two copies only so that I could play Four Swords. But I actually ended up liking the ALttP game on it. I even like the new cries they added when Link swings his sword. In my opinion, the GBA's PCM audio is very good. I think they didn't have to hurt the graphic or audio quality as much for this GBA port, because the sprites were simpler to begin with.
Actually, I think LttP would have been served with just a little less "streamlining" to make it a more exploration based game. For example, here's a really subtle change they could have made: take the numbers off of the dark world dungeons. After the Palace of Darkness, you can immediately access the Swamp Palace, Skull Woods and Thieves' Town. Do Thieves' Town first, you can at least walk into all of the remaining dungeons. MY preferred order is 1-4-3-6-2-5-7, at least on the SNES version.
Huh. I always wondered which version was better. Thanks. Also, I simply LOVE the little stabs you take at Egoraptor. That biased manchild had it comin'.
I believe you're supposed to push a block from the upper floor down a hole and push it onto that button in the ice dungeon, and it that makes it very well designed (the somaria cane solution is a bonus for sequence breakers)
Tails the fox It's a graphic setting on the SNES that allows the rendering of limited 3D effects and the enlargement or pivoting of sprites. It was used often in certain SNES games
Mode 7 is the 4th Background Layer, a special one which allowed scaling, rotation and 3D effects; on top of that It can be placed above of below other background layers.
Having owned the GBA version of LttP since childhood, and was lucky enough to get a second copy for Xmas so I could complete Four Swords legitimately and earn enough Triforce Medalions to do Q Bumpkin’s Side Quest, I would call the GBA Version of LttP my Definitive Edition of the Game.
I am currently playing the SNES version on the SNES Classic/Mini. Tell me about the heavy damage input from even small enemies. It's annoying when even one hit can take up to two or three hearts. The Minish Cap, which was my first Zelda experience, was much easier in comparison. Throughout the Minish Cap from start to finish I got only 4 Game Overs that I can easily remember. One of those was from not getting to Princess Zelda, who was turned to stone, on time after Vaati drained all her life force. Minish Cap is nice and smooth compared to ALTTP. In ALTTP, on the other hand, I got so many deaths and game overs, I can't even count them. Seeing that others like you face the same issue in this game, I feel this is normal for ALTTP. It's a big shame that the developers did not try to improve the damage input in the GBA version. To add to ExoParadgim Gamer's words, another difference that I noticed between the SNES and GBA versions, is that the word, "fairy", in the SNES version is spelled as "Fairie", as if it were some Celtic name. The GBA version, on the other hand, spells the word, "fairy", correctly. I also noticed that Link's shield in the SNES version is blue, while the shield is red in the GBA version. I do have a functioning GBA SP, but why get ALTTP for the GBA, when I already have one pre-loaded on the SNES Classic?
0:43 For me, it's this game(Link To The Past) When I first time played it, I played really horribly and required me using save-states and I also didn't know how to access item menu or just simply forgot how. 1:46 I didn't know the GBA version until I watched "Greenalink's Link To The Past Changes SNES and GBA video" 2:24 Blah, blah, I know the whole plot of the SNES version. Uncles leaves the house to rescue Zelda, but Link wakes up and leaves the house, walking to castle, there is a solider blocking his way, but Link found a way to get in there, he picked a piece of grass and fell into a hole into a place where his uncle is, the uncle gave Link his sword and shield and Link is taking off to rescue Zelda. 6:51 Yeah, too spooky. 8:06 Yeah, they tried so hard to make have the same instrumental as the SNES version. 8:18 The Magic Mirror noise in the GBA version sounds pretty horrible. 8:36 Even, SomeCallmeJohnny complains about that. 13:42 How did you do that? 17:04 I also have a tough time as well, but at the very beginning of the game. 22:22 I already know the ending. 23:41 When I first watched the ending, I cried when Jaker Boss's Let's Play ended. One thing you forgot to show, is the updated save feature. In the SNES version, you can't load your save that is the same position you saved at, but it does in the GBA version.
You never needed the cane of somaria to beat the ice palace, you just need to hit the block switch and then make a big loop around the dungeon and use one of the push blocks from the floor above to keep the door open
Yes LTTP was the best game in the series! I think you have to have started on 2D Zelda to get why that is. For those of who who played the original Zelda first.
The reason people don't like the voice clips in gba is because young link's voice doesn't really fit lttp link. If it was adult link clips, it still wouldn't be the best, but would be better than young link clips.
Nope, the Ice Palace wasn't intended to need the cane in order to complete it. There is a block that needs to be pushed from a few floors up. It's singlehandedly one of the best and also frustrating puzzles in the game, because there are two blocks that can be dropped down, but only one of them will land in the correct spot to be used on that button.
Mini-E True, there is no way that you can finish every game that was made between 1990 and the late 2000s, so there sould be spoiler alerts for games and movies no matter how old they are since you haven't finished them all. Saying that something isn't a spoiler or that it's ok to spoil because it's old is absolutely idiotic.
SliceGames I have not played it. So far, I played the wind waker HD, and the minish cap. Edit: now I played "a link to the past" (albeit being the gba version.)
There are a few things, you didn't mention that I really wish you did, but they are pretty small things, so I understand that it probably didn't matter, like the Like Likes that were added to the dark world, the music in certain areas of Kakariko Village being differnet and the fact that you can use the lv3 sword to hit Ganon without spinning, instead of requiring the lv4 sword, but again, it's all minor stuff.
The changes to the save system, the sidequest system, the boss battles, item locations and Zora swim controls were enough to make the 3DS version less enjoyable for some.
it's been a number of years but if I recall correctly, in the original game you could strike the wall with your sword to find which walls could be bombed. Bombable walls would make a unique sound.
I have a snes classic and a gba. Im in middle school and wanted to get into some older games. Zelda looks cool so I was wondering where to start. Should I play the first one, ALTTP, or Minish Cap?
fishnchips honestly doesn’t really matter here you start with this series I started with twilight princess hated it decided to try others and loved all of them besides twilight princess
I mostly hate the added sounds of Link since it changes my view of Links age. The manual and guide book display him as a young adult/late teens, while the sounds is from some kid that have yet to drop his balls. A Link to the Past is also a more action oriented game compared to Ocarina of Time and many other later entries in the series, so you will swing that sword more often and hear the child groan a lot. When I replayed the game on GBA I simple turned my sound off just to get rid of it. Might be tolerable for some and even a nice addition for others. For me it almost makes the remake unplayable, at least with sound.
Nice video! Bought the SNES version when it came out and still to this day my favorite Zelda game. Never knew about the GBA version till recently which brought me to your video. Kinda understandable to over look the GBA version when you have owned multiple systems and the industry is over saturated in games. Hell, I just found out about ALBW for 3ds two years ago and played through it. I definitely have to start playing the GBA port of ALTTP.
I wouldn't consider this to be a remake. I'd more consider it an enhanced port or a remaster. While ports usually involve using identical code, some don't. A game like OoT 3D changed practically nothing other than graphics and adding a hint system, and that game is not a port. Something like Kingdom Hearts 2.8 wouldn't be a remake for changing controls and polishing the visuals. Also, I honestly think the way you seem to get mad at Egoraptor in these videos for his opinions is pretty childish. Arin always overreacts to a game's quality, so getting pissy for him shouting at Skyward Sword simply because you have a different opinion to him is pretty stupid. I for one thought that Skyward Sword was a pretty good game, but I'm not going to get pissed just because someone online has a strong dislike towards it.
I've been practicing to speed-run LttP, which means I've been through it several dozen times recently. While I love the game, I've developed a few complaint that I didn't have when I was going through this game originally: 1) We're told on a number of occasions that changes in one world will have an effect on the other world. However, this mechanic only comes into play once: To enter the swamp palace in the dark world, you first need to drain the swamp in the light world. This mechanic feels wasted and could have been leveraged in several other places in the game but wasn't. 2) Some items are almost completely worthless. The blue cane, for example. There isn't a single puzzle in the game which is easier with the blue cane, or is only possible with the blue cane. In the remake, the same goes for the shovel. Catching a Bee in a bottle is almost worthless. The boomerang never becomes useful enough for its place at the very beginning of your inventory, and the bow is very hard to aim and make good use of for a casual player which, combined with the relatively tight limit on arrows, means few players ever leverage it enough. Not to mention the book of Mudora, which is almost completely worthless. 3) Several mechanics are once-and-done. Creating platforms in Turtle Rock with the Red Cane, for example, or using the hammer to overturn enemies in the Dark Palace. Most secrets can be found just by using the mirror and bombs, and most dungeons can be cleared without really leveraging any items except the sword and bombs. 4) Very few of the dungeons are set up to make good use of the dungeon item. In Ocarina of time, when you get the bombs you have to immediately use them to solve several bomb-related puzzles, etc. Every dungeon in OoT had the same formula: Use existing skills to get the dungeon item, then use that item to solve new puzzles in the dungeon where you found it. In LttP, this formula isn't quite so refined. You rarely need to make good use of the dungeon item in order to clear the dungeon it's found in, and dungeon items are only required for the dungeon boss in a handful of cases. 5) It's very possible to get yourself into a bad situation. It's very possible to get all the way to the boss of Turtle Rock without the ice rod, or get to the boss of the Ice Palace without enough magic in reserve to beat the boss. Not to mention a few places in Gannon's tower where you can run out of magic/bombs/arrows and be unable to go further. That's a heck of a lot of back-tracking for an honest mistake. OoT and later games would usually do a better job of making sure you are stocked up before a challenging puzzle, and make refills available without having to waste 30 minutes of back-tracking. 6) Neither the fire shield nor the mirror shield really offer compelling defense. The mirror shield in particular fails to block several beams and bolts which makes it quite a disappointing addition to your inventory. These are all small things, and like I said they didn't occur to me when I was playing through the game more casually.
My only issue with the remake, aside from the Multiplayer only Four Swords crap, is that Young Link's voice can't be turned off and it can get so damn annoying, which is why I always turn the volume off.
I think I can understand how some people feel about the voices in this game, because that's how I feel about the GBA ports of the Mario Bros games. But in the case of Link I don't mind it as much because I think his voice fits him very well, not only in appearance but in character. Link's character has remained pretty much a constant all throughout his existence. He's an adventurous kid/young adult, and he sounds and acts like an adventurous kid/young adult. Mario in the other hand, is an adult, chubby Italian plumber, with a mustache. And those are not the characteristics of someone that I ever pictured doing acrobatics and going "Yahoo!" This is a new development that started with Mario 64, and makes the character appear more childish than it was. So when I play older games with these changes, they feel different. Maybe not ruined, but weird. =S
I prefer the GBA version for one simple reason.
You get to keep the shovel!
Dig! Dig to the center of the earth!
Harcion Gaming A decent way to farm Hearts and Rupees in an emergency. :1
I consider the Shovel to be an underrated item in the franchise as a whole. :3
Harcion Gaming that net camr in handy because of that bee from the ice cave and a funny gimmick to deflect agahnim's spell back at him...
With your shovel dig to the core!
I've dug up whole fields. Love it.
Link's Awakening reference
Yeah I get a bit annoyed that it happens EVERY time you swing your sword but far from a deal breaker
+electricmastro IKR.
I will say that it does seem like the 2D zeldas are faster paced in combat, so the repeated clip probably plays faster, and you def use the sword to remove bushes more often (because they block your path), so it doesn't quite have the some restraint as 3D zelda.
+electricmastro
But it is kinda anoying. A real game ruining thing is yoshis voice since yoshis story. I cant stand it. Yoshis island was perfect as it was, that stupid voice in the remake though...it grinds my gears...
Virtual Console games aren't ports. They're literally emulation.
Which is why I don't do ROR episodes on them. I use them as a proxy for original games I don't own since it's literally emulating the original.
+Michael Perry What Exo is saying is that emulation of one game on another system is the definition of a port.
And a RoR on OoT 3D, Twilight Princess, 4 Swords, etc.
I’m sure this is buried below, but you don’t need the Cane of Somaria to beat the Ice Palace. You are supposed to do a circuitous route back through the dungeon and you push a block from the floor above onto the switch to access the boss.
You beat me to it
And that solution is exactly the same in the two versions, except that you can cheese it in the SNES version with the Cane of Somaria
Icebreaker says hold my beer.
My favorite change to the gba version is link yells when swinging his sword like ocarina of time
and saving doesn't count as a death like it did on SNES
On top of the saving location, it also saves your current health, unlike the SNES version
That's understandable and a respectable opinion.
id say ratchet and clank hd on ps3 are remaster
OXOTNHK d'Distro Remaster is a good word for it too.
ChambleeGames then theres also reimagining like the new ff7 will be
I can see why people wouldn't like the voice clips.
@@chaoskiller6084 though the same can be said in oot if u use glitches
@@lolidemon3163 there's a difference between playing optimally and using glitches
I've played this game dozens and dozens of times since I was a kid, it's my favorite zelda game. I had NO IDEA about the "antifaeries" being able to be turned into faeries with the magic powder!!!
Oh!
The pink hair in ALTtP is because there was an glitch in the sprite, making the hair pink. They could actually fix it in the GBA remake, but they decided to make it pink like the SNES version.
All the more reason to keep Link being FABULOUS.
Yeah it's not a glitch, it was a limitation of the amount of colors they could use on the character model. And the pink is from his transformation into a pink bunny. It makes me wonder why the bunny had to be pink, if the developers decided to make the bunny blonde that likely would have solved the issue
I'm glad. It makes him unique.
Um, no. It was a choice made to help differentiate the color of the skin from the hair, given the low resolution of the sprite.
They left it in because they chose it to be pink in the first place
Here's a magazine interview with Miyamoto prior to the release of the game showing some of the concept art for Link, with, guess what, pink hair!: i.warosu.org/data/vr/img/0014/19/1393274654463.jpg

Also it added European languages/pal/multi5 (the way you wanna call it) , I'm Italian and i can play it in Italian finally.

Minish cap is so underated!
Relevant!
+James Third word!!
(cough AoL Battle theme, cough Falling Rain, cough ahem Underworld bleh cough hack ugh.)
Boss design made no sense.
The GBA version was my introduction to this title.
I wish Nintendo would release a remake of Zelda 1&2 already. If all 3 Super Mario Bros. can get one then I don't see why these games can't get one either. :/
There s a Remake of Zelda 1, Mario All Stars style.......for the Japan exclusive SNES add on Satellaview.
oscarzx n Yeah.
Zelda 1 and 2 on the classic mini are just ports, not remakes.
totally agree 100%
5 years late but I came here to say the same thing.
This went from a ROR to a full-blown discussion on Zelda as a whole
3 years late but...
No, some GBA games could work with just a single cartridge. Advanced Wars, Super Mario Advance (I think all of them), Chu Chu Rocket, F-Zero, Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland, Sonic Advance, and Bomberman Tournament are some good examples.

In the Timeline, BS Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets takes place at the same time of Link's Awakening, since Link is away from Hyrule at that time and thus a new hero must be called.
ALTTP is the best Zelda for me forever. Everything was established in this one. My first Zelda back in Snes era
I think my best 2D Zelda is Link's Awakeing. Period.

Bad thing it was in English here in Spain too, so I didn't understand anything as a kid, but I could beat it after some years.
eeeeeeh I don't know. I felt really let down by the "it's all a dream" thing. getting there was great, but the end sort of negates all of it.
Links Awakening is pretty difficult. Definitely harder than A Link to the Past, but nowhere near as difficult as "The Adventures of Link"
JymSwis not really. in the end, there's a possibility that everything in the dream, although a dream, was real. You can see the wind fish flying over you, and MArin as a seagull if you never die. Also, who knows if the dream world inside the wind fish is an universe on itself?

Actually, many GBA titles, including most of the Super Mario Advance games, had download play.
And they moved the Four Swords DSiWare game to 3DS.
I don't think it is available for download anymore, is it? Because I remember getting it when there were only about 3 days for it to be downloaded.
PixlYoshi I thought it was just free for a limited time and then went back to being paid.
I don't think it is available anymore. It was available because Link Between Worlds sold a lot or something.
It's outright unavailable even if you're willing to pay; this means the only way to purchase and play Four Swords is on the gba
Which helps my argument the DSiware version isn't canon and the GBA ALttP is more canon than the SNES one

You don't need the cane for the ice dungeon on the nes version it just takes some creative movements in the dungeon to reach the other side to drop a block that will cover the switch
You can actually do the Dark World Dungeons out of order
Sort of. You can do 4 before 3 but a lot of the others require special items for access.
Not all of them though, i think just 4 3 and 5.
I originally thought Link's pink hair was just part of his hat.
I would love to hear you elaborate on what annoys you about the GBC games, since they are some of my favourite 2D games.
Other than that I would say that ocarina is tied for my favorite 3d zelda game with windwaker (although I have not played twilight princess).
It sucked there, too, but at least that's only for one dungeon.
@@ExoParadigmGamer All Zeldas have item swapping.

Haven't seen the comment, so I just thought I'd let you know that the map screen is actually Mode 7.
I grew up with a gameboy and zelda on the gameboy was FAR ahead of any other gameboy title of the time (except maybe for pokemon but that came later on).
winnetouch you drop a block from the room above to trigger the switch. Don’t need the cane. Honestly didn’t know anyone used the cane on it. Lol
Lol, the can of Somalia, well it is a shit hole I suppose.
@@Clusters3rdStrikeArc you ever been James, or are you just spouting ignorant bullshit?

"Three regular reviews and an RoR episode. Hmm, I wonder how this poll will turn out."
I'm not saying Skyward Sword was a bad game but it was definitely overhyped and let down. At least to me. I enjoyed Twilight Princess much more.
To me this will always be THE Zelda. My first memories were this game
24:47 for at least a good reason. This is the post ending dungeon, by then you've mastered the game really, so it's a final test with bonus content as the reward!
@exoparadigmgamer did you know that if you throw the Master Sword in the Fat Fairy's fountain you get the lvl 4 Master Sword

What I did was turn down the brightness, and when I went back to the game, it looked actually like the Snes version it may not be as good as the snes version but it's a ok remake at best.
in the ice palace, youre supposed to push a block from above, its actually not that complicated
Nintendo finally puts this limited release game on switch online +
Have you ever given a game a Replace? just wonderin'
See my AM2R, Sonic 1, and Sonic 2 reviews.
Sonic I and II Genesis vs. Iphone

You're an utter faccot
0:43
For me, it's this game(Link To The Past)
When I first time played it, I played really horribly and required me using save-states and I also didn't know how to access item menu or just simply forgot how.
1:46
I didn't know the GBA version until I watched "Greenalink's Link To The Past Changes SNES and GBA video"
2:24
Blah, blah, I know the whole plot of the SNES version.
6:51
Yeah, too spooky.
8:06
Yeah, they tried so hard to make have the same instrumental as the SNES version.
8:18
The Magic Mirror noise in the GBA version sounds pretty horrible.
8:36
Even, SomeCallmeJohnny complains about that.
13:42
How did you do that?
17:04
I also have a tough time as well, but at the very beginning of the game.
22:22
I already know the ending.
23:41
When I first watched the ending, I cried when Jaker Boss's Let's Play ended.
One thing you forgot to show, is the updated save feature. In the SNES version, you can't load your save that is the same position you saved at, but it does in the GBA version.
Do Metroid vs Metroid: Zero Mission next!
Its obvious is getting a remake score
Peruvian Potato replace
Or a replace
it is a diffrent game than the original, but even then there is no real reason to play metroid1 anymore
It's a clear re-break, but this zoomer low IQ fakkot would obviously give it a 'replace'
Oh, you youngins. I remember back when Link's Awakening was considered the sequel to Link To The Past.
Jenni Locke I remember when lady gaga was considered a good artist
Links awakening is a sequel to a link to the past
Nope, the Ice Palace wasn't intended to need the cane in order to complete it. There is a block that needs to be pushed from a few floors up. It's singlehandedly one of the best and also frustrating puzzles in the game, because there are two blocks that can be dropped down, but only one of them will land in the correct spot to be used on that button.
Wait so u liked skyward swords motion controls but not the story? Aight.
Only finding your channel today! This is amazing. When will you post new videos? Ur voiceover is next level bro
Not to spoil the ending of a game made in 1992... GG
Roo Some people havent played it
Mini-E True, there is no way that you can finish every game that was made between 1990 and the late 2000s, so there sould be spoiler alerts for games and movies no matter how old they are since you haven't finished them all. Saying that something isn't a spoiler or that it's ok to spoil because it's old is absolutely idiotic.
Sorry not everyone can play anything that's any old!
I have yet to play it.
SliceGames I have not played it. So far, I played the wind waker HD, and the minish cap.
Edit: now I played "a link to the past" (albeit being the gba version.)
I've been binge watching all your videos this week, your content is absolutely fantastic!
i noticed all the tvtropes references in this video
you deserve a cookie
There are a few things, you didn't mention that I really wish you did, but they are pretty small things, so I understand that it probably didn't matter, like the Like Likes that were added to the dark world, the music in certain areas of Kakariko Village being differnet and the fact that you can use the lv3 sword to hit Ganon without spinning, instead of requiring the lv4 sword, but again, it's all minor stuff.
There were people who didn't like Majora's Mask 3D? That game was a definite Replace!
Gharaham no, it was not
The changes to the save system, the sidequest system, the boss battles, item locations and Zora swim controls were enough to make the 3DS version less enjoyable for some.
It's all about the Zora swimming. I was so disappointed they changed the swimming. It was one of my favorite parts of the game.
it's been a number of years but if I recall correctly, in the original game you could strike the wall with your sword to find which walls could be bombed. Bombable walls would make a unique sound.
pretty good video btw
Legend of Zelda (NES) is a great Zelda game, the replay value is insane.
@@insertnamehere3271 u wot?
Peruvian Potato what I was telling one person that it doesn’t matter where they start with the zelda series and that I started with twilight princess
Hey EPG. You should do the Final fantasy 1 and 2 remake on GBA since it is the 30TH anniversary of FF. It's honestly my favourite remake on the gba.
Danintendo yh but PSP version is better thou
star man It’s also on PS3 and PSVita.
@@starman5901 The PSP version is dogshit compared to the GBA remakes

The top remake or rebreaks I want u to do are mario 64 vs 64 ds, kirby superstar vs superstar ultra, and kirby adventure vs nightmare in dreamland.
+AcePlays superstar Ultra to me & Antdude is a replace.
Have you had a chance to play the Switch version of Link's Awakening yet? It was released in Sept of 2019.
OoT 3D is actually a remake tho
Close; it's an abomination
I've been practicing to speed-run LttP, which means I've been through it several dozen times recently. While I love the game, I've developed a few complaint that I didn't have when I was going through this game originally:
1) We're told on a number of occasions that changes in one world will have an effect on the other world.
Ok, next remake or rebreak should be sonic genesis gba. >;)

8:58 Well in the Oracles series Link doesn't do any real cry
And in every zelda games (even the first) Link can grunt (it's just sometimes false)
Yup yup! Link has been grunting since the NES days. I don't mind his hyahs and aaahs and hups later.
I have Zelda Four Swords Anniversary Edition on my 3DS and I can play single player.. it also uses DS Wireless play for the multiplayer.
Well actually Link does have a compressed "oof" when being hit in ALTTP, though it's not really full voice acting and more of a sound
My only issue with the remake, aside from the Multiplayer only Four Swords crap, is that Young Link's voice can't be turned off and it can get so damn annoying, which is why I always turn the volume off.
Is nobody going to talk about the fact that exo likes the Majora's mask remake
did i hear that right??? Gentles and Lady-Men???
