The comment is a bit old but I just happened to have played the remake recently and Bowser's vocal changes are seemingly random. There are plenty of conversations where Bowser has multiple "voices" throughout them. Multiple times in the intro area will Bowser swap "voices." Not a deal breaker for me but it is noticable and a bit distracting.

Folks who have played all of the Mario RPGs understand that some parts of Bowser, are a facade he puts on, to seem a specific way. Losing your memory would pull the curtain back on that, and could potentially change your voice, pitch, mannerism, etc. considering Bower’s RPG personality.

Yeah, it stayed that way until Dream Team and onwards, where they tweaked the promo-art style a bit by:
      • making the shadows lighter
      • having the M & L emblems on their hats be the usual red-and-green instead of black
      • changing the shade of green on Luigi's clothes from a teal-ish color to to be more like other Mario games (and generally changing the color pallete to be more so aswell)
      • removing his socks
      • adding a different "texture" to the artwork for each game, which is cool and gives each game a more unique identity...which would make more sense if they wouldn't just reuse DT's sprites at the same time

One charming animation being dropped wouldn't be a big deal, trouble is the remakes did this *constantly* to cut corners, occasionally to outright bizarre degrees. Look at the level up screens in BIS and compare them to the remake, in the remake, the characters are just straight up not animated as you're selecting the bonus despite them plainly reusing poses from previous games' animations. AlphaDream was not doing well at the time and it showed in them no longer valuing fun details like that.

A few more things you missed:
    - The Japanese version of the GBA game had some of the revisions that carried onto the 3DS version since it was released after the American version, namely the heart blocks (although they were much rarer in the GBA version) and the Fawful boss battle using Cackletta's theme
    - There's a fun easter egg that where if you try to do a high jump while Mario is in mini form and have Mario jump before Luigi lands, you can punch Luigi's family jewels for coins. In the original GBA release, Luigi loses 1hp for every coin, 2hp in the Japanese GBA version, and 4hp in the 3DS version

Regarding the old vs new sprite issue, my main problem with the 3DS sprites is I liked the black outline on sprites in the first three games. It made them pop, whereas in the 3DS games I feel like the characters blend into the background too much.

Yeah, the difference between the sprite work (not just of the characters, but also the entirety of both version’ visuals) is why I think in this review, ExoParadigmGamer gave the remake of Superstar Saga a bit too much credit compared to the Game Boy Advance version by sometimes comparing the 3DS version (of the main game, at least) positively to the original to make it sound better when in actuality, it (M&LSS + BM) just trying to fix what was never broken (the incredibly underrated GBA version).

This might just be me, but it always feels like the Mario & Luigi series is kind of overlooked. I don't see a whole lot of people give exposure to them, which kind of disappoints me because I think these games are great (from what I've played of SS, PiT, and DT anyways). So, it's always nice to see someone give light to them.
Also, I 100% agree with you on how you don't understand why more than some people dislike the visuals in the 3DS games. To me, they always looked great (especially Dream Team). I mean, I can kind of see where they are coming from, but I don't think it's entirely deserved.
Anyways, I'll be looking forward to what you do in the future. (Maybe we can expect a review of that one super divisive M&L game, maybe?)
EDIT: I didn't mind the lack of facecam segments in this review, nor did I mind the facecam segments in previous reviews. They never really detracted from the experience, but not having them didn't really detract from the experience either.

IMO, Dream Team had a great idea for a story, but then blew all of that potential in favor of making Bowser the main villain and completely threw Antasma, a charismatic original villain with a history relating to the island and its people who (unlike Bowser) could not work in any other story, under the bus in the process. That honestly pisses me off more than any amount of trying to not be original that Paper Jam pulled. Other than that, she was a pretty fun boss once you learn her attacks. GBA Cackletta is easy only if you

    3. Move the gameplay to the bottom screen and put something like health bars or something on the top.
    4. Allow you to tap any friendly minion and drag a line to essentially tell it what to attack and double tap enemies to command all minions to focus that enemy.

I say keep the leveling, but have a thing where units can gain EXP in the background while you play other missions, play the main game, or even have the system off, almost like the Dojos in Smash Ultimate World of Light.

So in the end I decided the small attribution error wasn't worth the hassle of delaying this for another day. Anyways, this video has been a long time coming, so enjoy!

I agreed and really enjoyed with your viewpoints with one major difference and one minor difference. I found the Bowser's Minions mini game to be more of a meh than a let down. And as for the major difference, I am WAY more into the gameplay of the GBA version and its way of navigating the movesets. My issue with the 3DS version is that it's navigation requires a massive amount of time and concentration. You can only either have the map up on the screen, or the moveset selection. Which would make it easier to use the L and R buttons, especially as a veteran of the game who used L and R in the previous version. The problem there is, it's not that simple. In the original, all you had was 3 distinct symbols for each character. Hand, hammer, and jump, with the exception of the special jump for those in the back. This is a much simpler system that doesn't force you to move back and forth between various screens and allows more concise and quicker changes to what you need to use at the time. Plus, in the original, I really enjoyed being able to have Luigi in front.

Holy cow! The next episode will actually be a game I know! I'm quite excited! IMO the GBA versions are far superior to the originals, mainly because of the lack of glitches, the INCREDIBLE spritework, and having a nice balance of modern conveniences without all the stupid beauty contest fluff from later games. The only area I prefer the GB ones is in the sound department.

My main issue with Bowser's Minions is that, out of all the ways the game could've improved, I think the extra content introduced in Bowser's Inside Story would've been a huge improvement to extend this game's post-ending content. A Boss Rush mode, for those looking to rechallenge bosses with new attack patterns or increased stats, and a minigame center, where you could be able to re-play every single minigame without having to backtrack to that specific location to play it, the biggest offender being Wrinkle Academy, where the only way to replay that one is to traverse a long way through Chucklehuck Woods. Implementing these two in the Little Fungitown Minigame Hub would've been truly easy.
My other problem comes in what I'd define as "charm factor", though that is extremely subjective. I liked back then where Toads would get distinctive designs to further differentiate each other out. With the generic designs, I can't help but sigh at places I once loved to visit due to the extravagant designs of some original Toads.
All in all, great review, Exo.

I gotta say, the sound design and cartoon shenanigans are overall better in the original. The overuse of 'shock' effect lines, muted sound effects as not to trample over the music which is as a result a little more obnoxious and loud than need be, not to mention some of the character's toony actions just don't translate as well. The yoshi fanatic is a good example. His egg throw doesn't have the same oomph it did in the original, it's slower and has less of a visual impact as a result.

Seriously, it was the only game in the series that encouraged me to stop for a moment just to listen to the awesome music! Also, I'm not bothered by the 3D artstyle of the 3DS entries either, nor do I understand why its such a big deal to so many people when the distinct art direction the series has had in the past is still pretty much intact. And with Bowser's Inside Story also getting a remake on the 3DS next year, hopefully Nintendo will see it as an opportunity to remake the original Paper Mario in HD on the Switch. Just as long as they make it more like a pop up book instead of a paper craft cutout, since the Japanese name for it is literally Mario Story!

This becomes a huge problem when you're in areas where you're battling the same configuration of enemies over and over again. Battles in the original Super Star Saga just had this incredible flow that isn't present in any other Mario RPG. Also Bros Attacks don't feel as satisfying because of this. The fact that some Bros Attacks were hard to figure out is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing like the guy in this video seems to think. When you copy a text clip in Vegas, you can either create another instance of that same clip, or use it as a basis for a new text clip. The latter is how I made all the numbers to save time. However, I must have chosen a second instance on the 2 file, which means when I changed the 2 to a 3, it changed the original I copied from a 2 to a 3 as well. As for why I didn't notice it during my test render I use to pick out errors like this, I couldn't tell you. I noticed that in the original GBA version of Superstar Saga, there are a specific set of badges (by name) that don't appear in Bowser's minions for good reasons. These badges were known as "Mush Badge", "Mash Badge A", and "Mush Badge AA" these were available in the original's version of Little Fungitown at a shop. these were replaced with completely new equipment in the remake. These "Mush Badges" were taken out most likely because of how much they broke the original's difficulty and made things too easy. These badges would power up an equipped bro's POW stat by a certain amount depending on how many consumable items that you have in your inventory that had the word "mushroom" in their names. Mush Badge AAs in particular had the potential to destroy bosses, even Cackletta's soul and you were able to equip these to BOTH bros. That's just a minor thing that I noticed when comparing the two versions.

In Regard to your Comment about the Original Superstar Saga being moderately challenging:I think that applies only if you decide not to wear certain gear. The Mush Badges and Great Force Snap the Game in Half, and allow you to become a God basically since you hit so ridiculous hard. With the final Mush Badge and Great Force on Mario,I two shot Cackletta Soul with it and I wasnt overleveled
Cackletta Moves has so many turns due to her insane speed stat. If you want to have the first turn against her in the battle, one of the bros needs a 120 in there speed stat to outspeed them

Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga is my favourite Mario RPG, but I haven't yet played its 3DS remake, I always felt that game didn't need to be remade, because the original has aged like a fine wine, and frankly, I think anyone who can appreciate a Mario RPG can go back to that one and fully appreciate it as is, however I'm glad to see that the remake did the original justice, and while I'd classify those improvements as minor, I'll still welcome them!

To be honest, as somebody who plays Strategy RPG’s as my favorite genre, I’d have to disagree with your statement. Specifically that being, at least in my opinion, direct control of the main units in a strategy game isn’t necessarily a vital aspect to the genre. There is some fun to be had in having autonomous aspects to a strategy game. One such example that comes to mind is the Xenoblade series of games, in which you only have control of one party member in a party of 3 or 4 depending on the game, where during battle, the other party members are completely autonomous. While it can be frustrating at times, there’s a part of me that likes adjusting the settings of each of my party members to suit a new situation, so that they display new behaviors and do what I need them too. They’re autonomous, but there’s still an element of strategy, and I think that was the kind of thing that Bowser’s Minions was going for.
That said, I’m not saying that Bowser’s Minions ( the minion campaign I mean ) was really a good game. I wouldn’t describe it as “garbage” necessarily, it was just... _really_ boring. I could see what they were going for, but it just felt like I was doing the same thing constantly, and just... watching things happen instead of actually doing anything. At least in Xenoblade you’re in direct control of a single party member, and can issue tactics to your allies. Here you just kinda... watch, and watch again, and watch again, and again, and again, occasionally some plot stuff happens, and then more watching happens.

    • @rpgfanatic9719
      @rpgfanatic9719 3 года назад +2

You should try final fantasy 12, it's a game where you can control your party manually as well as completely program your AI to do whatever you want in any situation down to the exact priorities you want in situations, for example if an enemy is weak to fire, use fire, but priority says use heal on ally if at low health. you can essentially walk into a fight and watch everything play out with decisions that you made before the fight started, or you can be a speed menu berserker and play the game normally in ATB format.

    • @cosmicskydragon333
      @cosmicskydragon333 2 месяца назад

I think Xenoblade is a very bad example for "Strategy" as it has significantly less then other RPGs which let you control your entire party or even RPGs like Persona 3 where you had to manage SP so the game didn't devolve into "If the enemy can't kill me in a heal loop I win every fight with infinite heals."
Especially when Xenoblade contains the major flaws you bring up in Bowser's Minions. Doing an MMO skill cycle without any of the resource or moving out of attacks leads to less strategy still. Even if you added moving out of attacks it would suck as your tank and healer solve everything for you, or if you added resources then the AI would burn it. It is worse because it the AI holds it back.

Another great review Exo, so happy when these come out. By the way, if you want another good strategy game to play, I recommend Steamworld Heist. It's a 2D tactics game with a side on perspective were you play as a crew of of steam powered robot pirates. You need to worry about potentially destructible cover. Manually aiming your guns to either stun, immobilize, or critical hit. Each character has their own quirks that affect strategy, as well as their personality. The whole game has a fleshed out world full with quirky characters and locals. Also, the soundtrack is amazing and composed by real world Steampunk rock group: Steam Powered Giraffe (who also make cameos in the game) Highly recommend it!

I absolutely loved it. They remade the game to every single detail, remastered every design, reorchestrated every soundtrack, it just felt like I was a child again playing in my brand new GBA. Something I like about the japanese is their use of nostalgia to increase our approval to a game related to our childhood like Pokemon or Kingdom Hearts (Pokemon ORAS also had me all giggly with the nostalgia). I always found the M&L franchise with great replayability and Superstar saga was never an exception, having this new 3DS version jjust made it better.

Really glad to see you back again, Exio! :D And this was yet another fantastic ROR episode! And yeah, as you've said in the description, it's about time! ;) I think other things I've noticed about Bowser's Minions compared to Superstar Saga was that BM still only has 2 save files, instead of 3 like the original game, which has been the case since Partners In Time (I've never understood why the series since PIT was reduced to only 2 save files as opposed to 3 like in SS), even though you can still have Luigi be upfront like in SS, you can't unfortunately have him drink water, and have him spit it back out, again, like in the original, instead, it just automatically switches to Mario, I'm surprised there aren't any voice variations in Bowser's Minions either like in SS, there was a robotic voice, and a monster-like voice, but, I find it so strange that the GBA version had more voice variations than a on a superior system... And I do honestly agree with you about the Bowser's Minions mode as well being an incredibly, tedious, boring, frustrating disappointment, I had to keep leveling up my minions just so I'd have a bigger chance on taking down Morton, and, I finally did it... I am still gonna try to bet the rest of BM, though. Regardless, I do prefer BM over SS overall! :) Can't wait for the next ROR episode! Keep up the fantastic work!

You got something wrong about strategy games. You don't exactly need to have total control on all characters. But that depends the game rules. in Dungeon Keeper you got total control on your base building but barely any input in how the units act.
In Total War games you don't control units of one. you control entire batallions.

Great work on the ROR, dude. I can tell a lot of time was spent on this. Just seeing all the good additions to SS makes me outright dumbfounded that Partners In Time was skipped in favor of the yet to be released Bowser's Inside Story remake. I love BIS, but PIT deserves one too.
As for the live action vs. audio intros, I personally prefer live action segments. But because they're so short, it's not the end of the world if you ditch them given how most of your reviews are mostly audio anyways.

    • @Dalvory
      @Dalvory 6 лет назад +4

Partners In Time, as unpopular of an opinion as this may be, is my favorite Mario & Luigi game, and I was very bummed out to see it get skipped by Nintendo. If I had to guess, it was either because of it being seen as the black sheep of the series, or maybe the slightly darker plot elements. If it's the former, then I've lost even more respect for Nintendo, which I didn't think was possible.
But I think Partners In Time, as it stands now, has aged very well, just like all of the Mario & Luigi games, so it's not the end of the world.

I think the Bowser's Minions side-game is actually in the auto-battler genre. Like Super Auto Pets for example. Maybe EPG's expectations were for a strategy game with all the trappings that involves, but it's actually an auto-battler instead, setting EPG up for frustration and boredom.
That aside, I really appreciate the sections of the video comparing the original and remake! I've been looking for something like this to show folks when the inevitable discussion comes up of the differences between the two.

17:00 i have to disagree with you here.
Having played both dream team and supoerstar saga on my 2ds, i can tell you its not anti aliasing what the character sprites have.
Its the sprites being upscaled with bilinear filter that makes them slightly bigger but blurry. That is really noticcable since all the edges are crisp as a result of not having anti aliasing but mario and luigi look blury.
I had hope that since the superstar saga remake would be 2d, there wouldnt be a need to upscale the 2d sprites and therefore no more ugly blur but they missed the opportunity...

You make it seem only people who haven't played the games but seen them have a problem

I think the voiceover only setup feels a lot more professional. A lot of people include video segments when they don't know what else to put, and I think that if you want to make your videos feel better-produced, either go with voiceover, or do something interesting with the video segments, like a layout or something. There's a lot you can take advantage of with being physically present on screen (sight gags, visual demonstrations, etc.)

Like changing the Pilot Koopas into normal Koopas, or changing the boomerang bros to look more normal. Or the Troopeas to look like normal Koopas. This is a minor nitpick, but to me it kind of helped sell me on the Bean Bean kingdom being a seperate country. Overall I think the Remake does more good than bad, but I still prefer the original.

I feel that the lack of cartoony sound effects has to do with the 3DS's lack of GBA compatibility, meaning no further compatibility with the original GB soundchip. Many of the GBA sound effects clearly come from the original soundchip, and they just feel more fitting on a GBA. With a PSG, you can really customise the sounds a lot more than when using samples like on the 3DS. And I assume they didn't want to just sample the original PSG, so they had to find or create generic sounding samples.

Yeah, I’d just stick with the GBA version, thanks very much. This is the version that holds a special place in our hearts more than any other Mario & Luigi RPG (Partners in Time, Bowser’s Inside Story DS and Dream Team come closest) for having what the remake lacked - crunchy 32-bit GBA catchiness (the soundtracks from the original Superstar Saga are still there, I just think they have been watered down though I do understand that some may prefer the presentation of the later Mario & Luigi games over the pre-3DS ones mainly because of the evolution of gaming graphics) a zanily cartoony 2D atmosphere (granted, the 3DS M&L games have what the series of the 2000s - 2010s have been well-known for - silly cartoonish visuals, except when it comes to how Nintendo and AlphaDream put 2D and 3D in their graphics, I think the 2D styles from Superstar Saga Advance to Bowser’s Inside Story DS have even more life put into them than the ones that came after Dream Team. Maybe that’s just me.)
