This tutorial was perfect. Your "incorrect" ollies literally looked exactly like mine, which helped me know exactly how to improve off of it. Thanks a bunch!
Damn, you explained the pop without just saying "just pop". I've been trying to figure out how to pop better and that was the best explanation breakdown I've seen so far. Thanks!

I’m 57 yrs old and been skateboarding for two yrs now. This really simplifies it for me. That whole pop , teeter and front foot guide makes so much device now. I’m poping on a mini now easily
VLSkate hey can you help me I can't get my back foot to get up and I've been trying to Ollie for 3 months now, it would be amazing if the real vlskate could give me some pointers
For what is held to be skateboarding's most basic trick, whole books could be written on Advanced Ollie Theory. To get the feel for the ollie, it helps to really understand what it is you're trying to do, and how the weight of the board and inertia play a crucial part. Most tutorials heavily emphasise the back foot kicking down the tail hard, and then just say 'slide the front foot forward'. Aaron Kyro even recommends practicing the 'slide' separately for minutes on end. I'm not convinced this is useful, since when you do an actual ollie, you're going to have to do this 'slide' on a board that is quickly raising up, rather than staying at a 40 degree angle to the ground. I've always thought of the 'slide' more as a case of deliberately trying to 'grip' the rubber of my front shoe sole in the sweet spot (kind of in the pocket) and using whatever traction I can get to lever the board straight. This can take some time to master, but as far as timing goes, you're going to want to integrate a slight delay in this front foot action - indeed, trying to do a 'late' push can really help you get the feeling for this one. Basically, you need to snap your tail hard enough so that when the nose end of the board comes up, you can feel the pressure of the board pushing against the side of your front foot. All this in a slit second, naturally, but for me that's what makes a good ollie: popping the tail, waiting for the board to kind of 'snag' on my front foot, and only then sucking up my back foot and pushing out my front. Hope this is useful to someone.
Agreed. I wish I had seen this video before the Braille vids. The scraping your shoe up the board thing is a good illustration for how to level the board out, but it's a little like putting the cart before the horse. I tried that for weeks with little improvement before realizing that I had to get my front foot out of the way before anything else. Saw this vid and was doing better ollies within an hour. The Braille vids are great, but this one was much more helpful.
Arno Theadorno yes I totally agree. Getting the ollie right is extremely important. I can do a sluggish ollie almost everytime, and rarely actually do a proper one. Thats just not gonna cut it for me cos I think ollies have to be done right in order to progress on to the next trick. I think the "sucking up the back foot" after you pop is extremely important like you have said. I am not an expert or anything, but I think this part in particular makes all the difference in the world. Also timing the pop is really difficult as well. This is the hardest part of all in my opinion. I am having alot of trouble popping the board right before I jump.
+VLSkate hey bro, I had the issue with my ollie going up, but not leveling, im a begginer, but of course gotten used to my board first, and timing, and after watching this, it made more sense as to wat I was doing wrong, and how to fix it, and this was very descriptive, just takes time to learn! im a slow learner sometime xD anyways, left a like on this amazing video, keep up the great work!
This is the best tutorial I’ve ever seen. Nobody else ever mentioned the part about having your tail in the middle of your foot. They’re all “pop, slide and jump”. This was very helpful.
This is the first tutorial I ever saw that mentions the actual jump when popping the tail. I’ve been trying to get an Ollie down for months, practicing the single components on their own, pressing down hard on the tail. I always wondered how that motion was ever going to propel me upwards. So thank you for this detailed breakdown, I will try and apply your tips and (hopefully) finally complete an Ollie!

Great that you've got your ollie now - I'm still struggling after A LOT of failures! What was it that finally made you get the ollie?
Henrik Bergström For me it was all about timing. I could pop the board up but my front foot just didn’t know when to push down. When I started to push down my feet were messed up and off the board. What you need to realize is that the second you feel a little pressure from the board onto your front foot you need to push down. Also getting really comfortable with throwing your board down and jumping onto it can be really helpful. Just building your balance is crucial to an ollie and really all of skateboarding. Hope this helps! Best wishes on boarding.
One thing these tutorials always miss is that jumping is important but sucking up your feet towards your body is more important. Watch a short guy that can dunk, his legs might be fully stretched out but three feet off the ground, his head is also three feet higher in the air. Watch a skateboarder ollie over something that is three feet high, his head will be a little higher in the air than it is when he is standing but his legs will be sucked upso that his knees are near his shoulders.
BigSirZebras that's true, i do ollies right now by not so much jumping but kinda popping and sucking my feet up really quickly, it's not a great way to ollie and i'm trying to correct it

I've been skating for almost 18 years (i'm 28 now), and over the course of this i have learned alot of tricks, my first ever trick was a heelflip, somehow i was better with heelflips than kickflips, and i still am, i was even able to varial heel, laser flip, hardflip, basically most heel- and kickflip tricks before i was able to do a proper ollie, and still to this day my ollie was still not very impressive, for some reason the "simpleness" of the ollie, made me overthink it most of the time and ruin it. Thanks for the video though because by going through this again and watching this, it was very helpful for me cause my backfoot was still doing the wrong things :) my ollie has improved a ton because of this in the last few weeks :) keep skating bro and hopefully see you one day at the park :)
I’m a beginner and I always did those common mistakes like popping but not jumping and my right foot wouldn’t slide at all but thanks to this tutorial I’m pretty good at ollies now thanks to you
Hey man great vid. I need help with my ollies. I am able to do them consistently and with decent height. But whenever I Ollie my board always turns a bit frontside ( I ride goofy). I think this is due to my habit of swinging my right arm behind me whenever I Ollie. If I try to keep my arm straight and not swing my armbehind me this affects my Ollie and I can't get the same height.Do you have any tips on fixing this problem?
I have this twist built in my ollies to. I found 1 my body is slightly "charged" with a twist which releases itself when i jump (try to "decharge" your body by turning it slightly before jumping - align your shoulders differently, left or right) 2 Kick your ollie straight! Don't allow it to turn for a long time while u watch it. 3 Watch the Tony Hawk video from sept 2016 where he shows how its done. best wishes!
Piont your shoulders like a hockey player doing a bodycheck in the direction you are ollying, this will make your feet paralel & straight, as well as shoulders, the spinning/turning problem shall hinder you no more...
I haven't seen any tutorials where they show the jump without the board. It was so helpful in getting my motion, balance and timing right. Thank you for the tutorial, it's the best I have seen!
hope he does! I noticed foot position does a lot, foot more in the middle give higher and slower flip that's easy to control, but if I move it out the Flip is fast and I get almost no Ollie
Dude you seriously do an amazing job with explanations. Tutorials often gloss over subtleties that actually end up being the key to performing the maneuver. A lot of times it’s just a different way of looking at the problem or a different way of explaining it that gets it to click in someone else’s mind. That’s what you’re doing with your videos! Keep it up.
I got my skateboard when I was 7, learning to Ollie after consistently using it just now at the age of 14. I’m super comfortable on my board, it was just that I didn’t have any desire for tricks lmao. But at least it got me to get tricks quicker, so on the bright side, you should be rlly comfy on ur board :)))

No its backside
Bro that pfp 😂😂😂😳
@@Icyyellowsandroutes8823 that makes even less sense. Pop shuvit rotates backside. (The frontside/backside thing doesn’t make much sense outside of grinds. It’s switched outside of grinds. Quite wacky)
claim
I was not lifting up my back foot and now I did and it was way higher thanks man
Omg u described my exact “rocketed” position and I freakin fixed it
I've been skating for almost 18 years (i'm 28 now), and over the course of this i have learned alot of tricks, my first ever trick was a heelflip, somehow i was better with heelflips than kickflips, and i still am, i was even able to varial heel, laser flip, hardflip, basically most heel- and kickflip tricks before i was able to do a proper ollie, and still to this day my ollie was still not very impressive, for some reason the "simpleness" of the ollie, made me overthink it most of the time and ruin it. Thanks for the video though because by going through this again and watching this, it was very helpful for me cause my backfoot was still doing the wrong things :) my ollie has improved a ton because of this in the last few weeks :) keep skating bro and hopefully see you one day at the park :)
This it the best tutorial out there. I can’t thank you enough
I was like:
Oooooooooohhhhhh!!!
So, that's why my ollie isn't consistent :)
thanks man! Now I'm more confident on skateboarding
subscribed
so what makes your ollie not consistent tho?
+Pijen I didn't use the ball of my back foot
Asunatsu「 アスナツ 」 Omg same
This is the best community and skate Chanel out there
do you have any tricks to remember the timing for an ollie, like a cue to look for maybe
I’ve never seen anyone explain something this good
You have the perfect set up for practicing flat ground!
I keep sliding my foot in the right motion, having my foot on the tail like u had, but I can barely get the tail off the ground, help?
Flux
maybe it’s the timing like he mentioned. or maybe its that its not just a slam against the tail, it’s a pop then you move it up a little
Nvm, I figured out that I can’t slide my foot. For some reason when I pop the board, it is so hard to slide my foot
Wait no I’m actually sliding my foot, I just can’t get it to go higher and level out
Did u figure it out yet?
ellison_tolenti so can you Ollie now
this was a awesome tutorial haha you should go tell braile how to fix their tutorials cause yours is way better :D
also how long did it take you to get your first ollie ??
I landed my first ollie!!!!
Your tutorials really help me, thank you so much
I’m a beginner and I always did those common mistakes like popping but not jumping and my right foot wouldn’t slide at all but thanks to this tutorial I’m pretty good at ollies now thanks to you
Omg thanks that helped a lot!
Sometimes, I loft my back foot barely, then pop
Thank you my friend!
Piont your shoulders like a hockey player doing a bodycheck in the direction you are ollying, this will make your feet paralel & straight, as well as shoulders, the spinning/turning problem shall hinder you no more...
your shoulders should b parallel to your board that way u wont go fs
if shoulders are too forward you land on nose and slam into the pavement. A fine balence i guess, depends on how fast and the obstcale, must be feel?
I haven't seen any tutorials where they show the jump without the board. It was so helpful in getting my motion, balance and timing right. Thank you for the tutorial, it's the best I have seen!
ive watched so many tutorials that never mentioned the back foot thing and only poorly talked about timing, THANKS best tutorial so far
I swear to god the second i watched the vid i got a high ollie
Don't use God's name in vain
I wish this came out when I first started in my teens (2000's) lol
One for kickflips please
Agreed. I wanna be ablr to do them effortlesly
definitely
hope he does! I noticed foot position does a lot, foot more in the middle give higher and slower flip that's easy to control, but if I move it out the Flip is fast and I get almost no Ollie
+Braeden Lasher alertly has one
+Brandon Skates Thanks , didn't realised !
Gonna be honest, this is way better than any other Ollie vid I’ve seen, this guy is really under rated
Keep it up.
I've been skateboardingin for 6 months and i still cant ollie 😐
ayo can you ollie now?
Thrax yeah kinda
gg
I got my skateboard when I was 7, learning to Ollie after consistently using it just now at the age of 14. I’m super comfortable on my board, it was just that I didn’t have any desire for tricks lmao. But at least it got me to get tricks quicker, so on the bright side, you should be rlly comfy on ur board :)))
I've been skatingboarding for 2 years and I still can't ollie. It kinda feel embarrassing ngl
4:53 also bringing ur arms up to jump a lil better 💀
I can’t even commit
i really love the way you broke this down to every inch of the ollie technique.its such an important fundamental trick. a solid technical ollie opens up so many possibilities!!
Just landed my first non noob Ollie thank you you!! 🤟 Best explanation on RUclips.
Braille is in it for the cash and the views.
This guy is trying to teach us.
men please a video of ollie while riding
Juan Pablo
It’s the same. Do the exact same steps
Thanks man I started skating yesterday. In fact your channel got me interested jsyk.
Finally, someone who shows the Ollie jump without a board. So much more helpful. Timing was key too, thx this was killer!!!
I tried others tutorials and I've been stuck like 3 or 4 hours without no progress, I've found this tutorial and I landed the ollie in 30 minutes.
All the tiny advices was really helpful
i love how relaxed he is, he never screams like the other youtubers do👍👍
all the vids i had watched didnt explain this much but this vid is the the best and i have gotten much better after this video
When I got my first board, I had watched some Ollie tutorials. And when I was going to try some Ollies it never turned out good and when I did it with my friend he saw I didn’t pop the tail and staged my foot up. So I started trying to pop and then lift my foot up and it work. After that day my Ollie have just getting better and better. So if I was new and wanted to learn Ollie, I really recommend this video! Its explaining everything very good!
This is way better than any other ollie video on RUclips. well done
Dude, your videos are the best! I was frustrated for weeks, and as I soon as I saw this video, I went out and literally did my first ollie. You’re the best!!
Liked and subbed!
My Ollies honestly suck, I watched a tutorial that sucked before this and I only got like 1 inch off the ground. Not only did this help, but it sounds so much more easier then I thought. This also helped me with my confidence, thank you. This is the best tutorial I’ve seen yet
Wow seriously dude thank you so much for making this video. My ollies just weren’t improving and then I watched this and holy they got SO much better within a few tries. I’m stoked! Thanks man
landed my first ollie today thanks for the extra help
Thank you so much for breaking this down so much. Nobody goes into as much depth as you
This tutorial taught me what o have been doing wrong, time to practice like hell, I'll update when I get a good ollie
I DID IT, AND IT WAS HIGH ENOUGH TO GET ONTO A CURB
