Yes the cream of tarter is used to prevent crytallization. You can use vinegar or I have heard of lemon juice. Or you can just use isomalt and water instead of everything he used. If you use Isomalt don't eat very much because it will cause Explosive bowel movements.
I've found recipes calling for only a 1/4 tsp. of cream of tartar, don't know if it makes a big difference or not. And I've noticed if you heat it too rapidly, it'll make the color turn out yellowish or brownish. Try turning the stove down, but bear in mind that it will take longer to boil. Also try lowering your max temp of 300*F to around 280-285*F you'll get a little bit lighter color. Mind you this takes a little guess work to get the "perfect" glass, so YMMV.
@dilwit if you want something that's clear as glass you should use a type of sugar called isomalt. you only need to melt it and mold it, no need for cream of tartar or corn syrup. It is a bit harder to find, but any store specialized in selling baking stuff is gonna have that
ok. i did the glass acording to them, though i did half the requirements to test it out. here are some tips that you might find useful. 1.NEVER LET THE MIXTURE GO PAST 300!-the mix. that i did , which is half the original, started turning yellow by 287. so if you want the glass to be clear, take it out by 250-270 your choice. 2.make sure the airway is cleared before you make the glass-have the mold ready. 3get wire brushes-the stuff is very hard to take off so the wire brushes will help you out
@beatdownboogie my mother used to make jell-os with 3d art in them and they would come out yellowish. so she added citric acid and that took care of all the colors. im sure citric acid could make your glass clear.
Is there a way to make it super clear yours had a yellow tint to it. or would it be better/easier to just color it green and chroma a background in somehow.
I made a window sugar glass for my film project for our action movie and we did a scene where we jumpthrough it in slownotion it looks so kool if only it was likewhite instea of yellowish
@meadorcaleb Cake decorators use Isomalt. You can buy clear Isomalt sticks off ebay. It's not very economical though and it isn't advisable to eat too much of it.
you would just add the food coloring in the mixture till you get the desired color you want, make sure you add very little at a time because it doesnt take much to achieve a brilliant color! :)
Absolamb Salmon Well, the joke behind it is that despite me seeming like a relatively sane person, everyone my age is the exact opposite, so clearly I must be insane if I'm different from people of my age. Right?
Used this video with some blood capsules, made sugar shards, went to the park and proceeded to eat them in plain view of the public with fake blood pouring out of my mouth. Hilarity ensued, cops were called, best birthday ever.
if it takes 45 minutes to cook and one to two to harden, dosent that mean the whole process it more like two or three hours, not one? or is one pice of info wrong/
So far I've tried this thrice, each time using all the designated ingredients in their proper amounts and with my stove on medium. Yet each time at around 200-250 degrees F, my mixture turns a sort of beer-bottle brown and doesn't bubble as much as shown in the video. The temperature tops out at around 280, and I end up with sticky brown glass when I finally pour. Please, what the heck am I doing wrong?
Can I use it as windows in my house?
I have spent nearly 2 days trying to find out how to make it clear so now I know to use a low flame for ages! Thanks heaps!!
I like how he says not to cook it too much or else it might yellow; and then his end product is very yellow....lol.
Jeff Galewood Do as I say, not as I do
Jeff Galewood its so we can see it
This method worked perfectly. Thanks guys!

Would a clay mold hold up with this? Or do you think the sugar solution will be too hot?
I'll keep this in mind if I ever need to break fake glass on someone's head. Thanks!
