Rather, she wants to draw your attention to how easy it is to move around now. She can't say out loud "if there is a threatening person you can move away" so she says this other scenario which still illustrates the same idea.
They are the first of this type for the New York City Subway System. (Toronto Ca has had open gangway cars on line one of there Subway System for a few years.) Also the open gangway cars might cut down on subway surfers since there is no opening in between the cars .

Good: More space to side and stand, more riders can get on, you have more options to walk away from people you want to avoid, wider doors make it easier for crowds to get in and out, harder for subway surfers to climb on top of the trains (they usually wait in between cars and as they pass through the outside or open top area, they climb up. They can’t do that now unless it’s at the station which is harder then it sounds because if the conductor sees them climb, they won’t move the train) Bad: Open train means you’ll see a lot more beggers since they can walk through the whole train easier, same for those ppl selling candy, bad smells can now spread through out the train instead of it being isolated in one car, that soft material between cars is going to get ruined or cut up the first day in NYC so rain and god knows what can get through making it uncomfortable to be in the car, what happens in one car will certainly affect Everyone on board, a fight breaks out etc.
Check out the BMT D types of 1927, 1928 that ran from Brooklyn to Manhattan several decades ago which ended in 1965. They were the first but built differently. 😊

So now the smells will be througout the entire train. When there is a fight , or shooting or stabbing its more open now so we are all at more risk from getting hurt. These people that come up with these ideas dont take the train in NYC. Especially in the after hours 😩 rush hour

This was actually cleared up by the MTA President during a press conference last week that the internal memo was specifically so that as the R211T's roll out, they prefer to run them on Local Services for now but are completely capable of running express
How is it that there is more seating when now the seating near the end of each car is now gone? Personally I still prefer the seating on the D/F line that are clearly show how many people for each seat it can be. Too ofter on these wide benches it is less seating because many people spread out or esp during the winter with coats you may not want to squeeze in. And also if there is any attach or person they can just through the entire gangway now and either smell or shootuo or other and there is no escape. At least with the separate cars you can leave a train and get off to go to another car. But it is already done and paid for so eventually will see on all train line guess still enjoy the D/F lines as is for now.
I prefer the seating on the D train too. Not sure about the F train because the cars on the F and D are now different. However, I do notice that the F train has wider doors and the wider seating is more comfortable for fat people. The seatings on the D train is not big enough for the majority of New Yorkers who happen to be fat.
Not having open-gangways has not stopped people from using the doors on the ends to go between subway cars. I've seen that in many U.S. cities (not just New York). It might not be safe, but if we lose a few passengers, it's Darwinism at work. Anyway, it's far from the first in North America. San Francisco and other cities have them. In Los Angeles, the new cars that are being tested are also that way.
The real question is: why the hell did it take them so long to start with these. Another note: They supposedly aren't able to operate on express tracks, only local.

@@sebastianjoseph2828 yeah but if something is happening then you can get up and walk away now, you don’t have to sit for 3 minutes before you can exit to another car, also with the open areas you can go towards the conductor car and driver and report it if something is happening, also with the open areas, it feels more safer because the conductor which is in the middle car normally has a cleaner line of sight and can see what’s happening all through the cars not just the one they are in.

I am a new yorker and the issue with this open gangway feature is the type of people that ride the train. There are homeless people and mentally ill people on the train and we will feel like there's no escape. I'm not a fan of this. Maybe they should regulate the problem of any and everyone having access to the train!

That's not true. This isn't the first articulated cars with accordian buses came in the 1990's The original cars were called The Triplex D Types built from 1925 to 1927 & retired in 1965. What I don't understand trains Of this design in Europe all have forward facing seats these new cars don't. These windows are too small on the R 211 cars. I dont like these trains at all. Half of all the stations on A & C Line don't have elevators . I am sorry I want to be able to look outside or the tunnels with the forward facing seats. The cars in Philadelphia SEPTA have cars that resemble & could've replaced the R 32 cars , Toronto Canada TTC & BART California has slanted cars, R 40 replacements ? The TA didn't even consider trains like these i mentioned. Seems to me they need more to hold onto for people standing in the center of the cars. I was always stuck in the middle with nothing to balance with.
