Lately I've been going out with the 50 f/1.2s and 28 f/1.4e. I don't mind the weight, but the bulk is problematic at the distances involved. People are very surprised to have such big lenses pointed at them from such short distances.
My gear is mostly for vacation so weight and size is important the older I get. I have the 14 to 30 and for me it is great. The inside shots in cathedrals, mosques, museum's is where I use the wide zoom. In the f mount days I toted the 2.8 lens but no more for me 4.0 lens is fine. I also have the 24 t0 70 f4. weight and size when travelling is king.
Loved the dive into the wide angle options for the Z system... and the timing is excellent. I will be visiting the UK soon and I am trying to decide which lens(es) to bring. Thanks for the info!
There was a comment early on in the live stream on filters on the 14-30mm F4 z. Using the Kase Magnetic system and their thin filters, even a set of those in a set of 82mm had pretty poor vignette at the wide end. The easy solution, although it will cost more, is I went with a set of 95mm's with step up rings. No Vignette from what I can tell due to the filters at that width. So regardless of filter system, I would expect that should one wish to use the 14-30mm F4 Z, and need filters, a set of 95's should do them well, and they should be able to adapt to just about every other lens. As an added bonus, I could even put them on my 200-500 F5.6 f-mount. Why, I have no idea, but I could.
Just curious what your thoughts are on my dream landscape lens, the Nikkor Z 16-34mm f2.8. I noticed that Nikon was granted a certificate of patent on Feb 14, 2023, for this lens. I am surprised it is not being discussed very much, given the competition. Canon has their RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM which launched in Aug 2020 and Sony is in the process of releasing the second iteration of their FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM lens for their mirrorless system. The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f2.8 is awesome, but it forces you to change lenses, especially for landscape photography, too often. Also, it would be nice to have a smaller filter size and VR. What is your guess regarding how long it will take to see it in the roadmap?
THIS!!! So much more useful to have 35mm at the "long" end, and it paires great with a 85mm or 70-200. My 14-24 Z sits almost unused in the closet just like my F 14-24 did, still use the 17-35 on my D5 and have the 85mm on my Z9.

Thank you very much Henry!

Good Job guys.

Smashing blouse!
14-30 for the portability and 82mm filters. If I need f/2.8, I will take the f-mount.
I really like AF-S 17-35 . I wish they make Z version of it.

My dream is to be a brick wall photographer but the market is just too saggerated...
Why are the file sizes 1/3 larger for the 14-30 and 14-24 than with the 18-28? Same camera? Same RAW compression settings?
Likely to be the different wall. The white wall is a lot more uniform than the brick walls and so the algorithm can compress it more.
Pas de sous titrage, dommage !
Thanks!
Thanks John!
