Hi, at the ripe old age of 71, I have only today discovered your channel and I have to say, I like what I'm both seeing and hearing from you two. I'm almost ready to make the decision to buy the Z50 ii having recently decided to return to photography after a break of 40+ years. The last camera I owned was the Canon AE-1, so I've been in shock for a few weeks after discovering just how far the technology has advanced since those long lost days, lol. Looking forward to watching more videos from you both.
I'm currently Zfc user and I love this camera. It fits almost all my needs. What I missed so far was good travel zoom (dream lens would be 16-80/2.8), wide angle zoom. Right now I'm using mostly set of primes instead of zooms, what's not a problem for me, becase I used to photograph like that for years, when I was using manual analog cameras. But there is additional problem. Some time ago I started with bird photography and AF in Zfc is not good enough - too slow, no birds detection. I was waiting for this mythical Z90/Z80, but we have Z50 II that have new CPU, so better AF, we have bird detection and nice price. No IBIS, but I can live without it and old sensor. And now I have dilema - wait for Z90/Z80 (maybe some day it'll come) or buy this one... Bird photography is just nice hobby for me, so I don't need Z8/Z9 for that, DX format even better for me, because my Tamron 150-500 becomes in fact 225-750, but 33Mpix sensor would be nice :)
Becky and Kon , so nice to see you together again!!! ❤😊 I think the Z50II is great looking camera , currently have a Z50 and I think the new features are worth an upgrade! So happy to see you two at the same time!! 😊
Nice (and helpful) review. Just one comment - you say ideal for anyone starting out in photography but as someone who's had cameras since a Box Brownie in 1958 I'm at the other end of the spectrum and the new Z50ii is exactly what I want at the end of my photographic journey - lightweight, excellent focusing, good video specs and I like the idea of tweaking jpegs before shooting to cut down on post processing. I'm off on holiday in a couple of days but will definitely be in touch when I return. Thanks again and please don't forget my end of the market. We're even more numerous than all these so-called influencers 😉
Looks good for the price point and leaves space (pixels and sensor VR) for a z90. However, it used to be you bought a Nikon for access to the Nikkors; that is really not the case nowadays in DX
I like the specs on the Z50ii - we were long overdue for a mk ii version. The only slight disappoint is the lack of IBIS, but perhaps Nikon is saving that for the rumored Z80/Z90 if we ever get those.
Next DX release should be constant aperture wide angle and standard zoom lenses for that sensor size (or faster variable aperture ones, like a Z-mount version of the 16-80 f/2.8-4). Sorely needed.
Great to see you both! I'm still waiting for the D500 replacement. The Z50ii is good, but it's not enough for me to move to Z mount from my D5300 and all my F mount lenses...if Nikon refuse to put IBIS on any of their DX Z line-up, then i'll likely just replace the D5300 with a D7500 when mine gives up the ghost
Great update! Biggest surprises for me: the Z50II has a dedicated Bird Detection mode (the Z6III and Zf do not), and the Z50II has Cycle AF Mode (the Z6III and Zf do not...). I wish Nikon were more consistent with these features - specifically, lower-end bodies having features that should really also be in their mid-range line. I'm not in the market for a Dx body but I think the Z50II will do really well for Nikon 👏🏻
@@zureq2946 Zf has Bird Detection rolled into Animal. It’s not separate / dedicated like the Z8/9 and Z50II. Zf and Z6III both do not have Cycle AF Mode.
a very informative review delivered in a thoroughly enjoyable style. Great stuff Kon and Becky. Love this camera but just bought a Z8 for nature shooting and Im very happy
If NIkon added IBIS or higher MP to this camera it would have come in more expensive like the Canon R7. The Z50ii camera is priced competitively with Canon R100 and Sony ZV-E10 which none have IBIS. For the price of the body, it is likely the best one out there at this price point. The 20.9 MP sensor is developed originally from the Nikon D500 sensor which is superior quality in low light for video and photos compared to 24 MP. Best dynamic range and image quality at low light compared to other aps-c brands at 24mp. Nikon will likely make a Z80 (or Z500 or Z9) with IBIS priced as a premium body loaded with more features for wildlife photo shooters and bigger battery to compete with Canon R7 priced likely $1500 to $1700 at launch (R7 was $1800 at launch), but discounted later on. My guess is that they are already working on it but not ready yet.
I JUST ordered the Z50 mark I as a lightweight EDC since I have the Z6iii and Zf for everything else....and it arrives today. I now have to turn around and send it back...but wait?! A flippy screen instead of an articulating screen - not for street. Heavier, same battery, and still no IBIS. I think I have to pass and ask for a discount on the mark I or just carry the heavier Zf as I've been doing. I plan to use the Z FF lens anyway.
The main upgrade besides the new processor would be the physical zoom buttons and DISP button imo. These are touch buttons on the screen on the original Z50, and it's a pain in the bum to use them during winter as you have to take your gloves off constantly. Oh and the Z50 doesn't have USB-C charging. Other than that it's a fine little camera that is light enough to carry around everywhere. I haven't had a lot of issues with the battery size either. I've never needed more than 2.
As a DX camera I'm not actually interested in the Z50 II but its nice to see Nikon expands their range... I have a trouble understanding where is the problem for a small and light camera to be used with a big lens because the "front" weight! I have the Z9 and the Z5 and caring around the Z9 with, for example, the 100-400mm or more notably the 180-600mm for hand held shooting it is not a fun time (at least for me) and I would have switched to Z5, if it had a 45mb sensor, in an inkstand!!! Thanks for your nice pre-review and I'm waiting for the "real" one as I respect your opinions!...
nice to see you again! a like this new Z50 II I will buy it one day, I will wait for the software upgrades because for some reason it is a trend with camera makers now. It completes my needs (I still have a DSLR Nikon) so you know video is not the best
The fact that the Z5 frequently goes on sale for $999 USD, and it is a full frame (older) sensor with IBIS, had me hoping Nikon could do IBIS in a sub $1000 DX body. I wish they’d done a Z5ii first, but this is the first Expeed 7 body I can practically afford.
Nice vid -- ok NO IBIS is probably a cost/price issue. Yes it also impact body size/wt. Looking at specs the Z50ii - is a D500 replacement (but so was the Z50) -- We will see if there is something else i the works - it depends on how well the Z50ii sells. Obviously a Z90 with 30+MP stacked sensor+IBIS+CFE cards would cost about the same as a Z8, particularly if this is considered to be a low volume sell. In the meantime the Z8 works great alongside the Z9. The new CINE lens appears to use a standard 95mm barrel which means it can be used with standard matt boxes. What is "interesting" is that the rings do not appear to have standard sized cog teeth - so integrating it into an existing rig with follow focus and other off-lens control gear maybe interesting. I would be interested to understand if it is focus by wire or mechanical -- my guess is focus by wire since it supports Nikon AF.
Does the Z50ii have the option to switch to a 1.33 crop, within camera, as one could do with the D7200 and D500? That would push the 28-400mm lens out to an 800mm equivalent, which would be nice for wildlife.
I will wait for a D500 replacement for my wildlife photography. I currently use the grip with extra battery and vertical controls on my D500 permanently. It provides the extra features but more importantly it balances it better with my long telephotos. I would like IBIS and a slightly higher megapixel sensor. Please also use the same batteries as my full frame Z cameras.
For me. Pros. Headphone jack! USB-C. And the AF-system ... Cons. NO IBIS!!! :( NO, it cannot take the D500 spot. I hope Nikon will make a Z60 or something with size and accessory that also fits Z6III. CFExpress+SD, Same battery etc with IBIS. ... Also a Z90 (Z9 size) would be cool or a Z80 (Z8 size) but those are something more than a D500 replacement ... That said the Z50II is on my wish list :) ...
This may be the one that I have to get. I wish that it had IBIS, but, that's the only thing that it's missing. I think that I would get the 35 and the 50mm 1.4 lenses to go with it. I would like to see how the Plena looks through it.
And could I ask what was the SmallRig grip/mini-tripod which popped up on screen about the 4min mark? It looked a good size and fit on the Z50ii. Thanks.
Thanks for the review. I use a Zfc and love it. I would love a Mk2 with all this stuff. Biggest gain would be the User selectable modes so I don’t have to change so many things going from milky way to wildlife shooting. And you are right a bigger dx lens as I find the 50 - 250 just a little short and I really can’t justify the price of the FX lenses.
Finally a replacelment for my D5300. I can use all my lenses with an adapter and buy propper lenses proper lenses become avalilable. I am a little disapointed with the pixel count but this is not a problem with modern post processing software. Flippy scereen and faster frame speed are a must for me.
20MP is enough for me. Two typs of photographers need more MP: -landscape photographers (large prints) -photographers who are cropping photos basically all the time Less MP is great for low light photography (cleaner photos), smaller files, longer burst shooting,…. I am glad Nikon made Z50 mark 2, I love fast and reliable autofocus. Great camera for traveling. We only need more and better dx lenses
I need the functions of this DX camera ... except ... I need dual cards ... EN-EL15 series battery ... weather proofing ... 24 to 30+ megapixels ... In other words an updated D500 in mirrorless form. Otherwise, the Z50 II is a fantastic bargain.
HI Kon & Becky! $956 US, USB-C Power instead of the old Micro USB, Flash, Great possibility to replace to the D500. Battery size the same as the Z50. I do have those cables for the Z6III, Nikkor Z DX 12-28mm should be great for a kit lens. BSI or like the Z5 type of FSI sensor? Cheers!
I think ibis is an expensive extra. It’s brilliant but expensive. The camera is priced very competitively and well specced. I firmly believe a Z90 with ibis, no pop up flash is coming but it will be nearly twice the price.

I’m ok with the 20mp, but no IBIS means not for me right now. Lens VR isn’t enough. Faster primes don’t have it. Longer lens IBIS helps with framing the image. A faster shutter speed doesn’t help make the EVF stable. The rest of the features are welcome updates, well other than not having a tilt screen.
Rumor has it that the Nikon 28-135mm F4 lens with power zoom might be $2400, as it might be priced around what Sony offers in its own 28-135mm G F4 Powerzoom lens of same focal range at $2400 USD at B&H Photo. But it might be a bit less than that. General public might find that lens too pricey. Dedicated pro videographers would buy it though.
It seems like a forever argument. DX shooters are price conscious, making a supposed Z90 a hard marketing prospect. I think the days of the D500 == are over. The ILC market demand is a ghost of what it was in the D500 heyday.

One can speculate a lot as to why Nikon doesn't give the Z 50 II a higher resolution. I think it has to do with the fact that the APS-C sensor doesn't play the main role for Nikon. Nikon is big in full frame. If Fuji had leased the APS-C format for itself. They then go straight to medium format. It can be assumed that Nikon does not count the APS-C format as its main business.

I would like Nikon to release Nikon Z80 Camera to replace Nikon D500 and direct competition against canon R7 Nikon need to remember they are a household name along with canon Nikon have failed sports photographers and journalists by not releasing better designed apps c size camera it is about time Nikon should release Nikon Z80 camera Thanks Abdul

Zf has both bird detection and cycle AF mode. At least birds for sure.
The release date determines many of these things
The animal mode on the Z6III does birds, though I guess it might be an issue if you are photographing a bird riding a capybara.

Hi Becky
I want this for birds and running animals etc. in action photography. But also for video.
More megapixels won't help with video only make processing slower. Just got z30 but would have held off for this if I knew it was coming because it should do better for video but is still up to date.
Does it have Bird recognition as well?
Yes!
I’m ok with the 20mp, but no IBIS means not for me right now. Lens VR isn’t enough. Faster primes don’t have it. Longer lens IBIS helps with framing the image. Nikon needs to add such 3rd party lenses to their DX system like Tamron 17-70 F2.8 VR and Tamron 11-20 F2.8. All DX zoom lenses are so dark!
It’s been a while! 👍🏽
It seems like a forever argument. DX shooters are price conscious, making a supposed Z90 a hard marketing prospect. I think the days of the D500 == are over. The ILC market demand is a ghost of what it was in the D500 heyday.
So it's a new 20.9mp sensor? 20 is definitely plenty. Have the mk1. and considering the new one. 😀
Best
Every other review video says it’s not a new sensor.
I belive adding more MP to the DX sensor will end up doing the smartphone sensor thing. Where basically evenbtually you are not adding any physical pixels but rather virtually splitting a pixel into smaller parts only making the file size larger at the expense of pictgure quality.
Big question is do I trade in my older Z-50 (second camera) for the enhancements of the Mark II?
yes😊 no lol ? Im thinking about it from the D7500 ,
One can speculate a lot as to why Nikon doesn't give the Z 50 II a higher resolution. I think it has to do with the fact that the APS-C sensor doesn't play the main role for Nikon. Nikon is big in full frame. If Fuji had leased the APS-C format for itself. They then go straight to medium format. It can be assumed that Nikon does not count the APS-C format as its main business.
This Z50-ii is not for me, I stick to my dslr's.
Otherwise it was good to hear Rebecca again.

The Z50ii is a major disappointment for sports and wildlife photographers. It looks to be an entry level camera for people who want to take selfies, but is very dissapointing to pros and advanced amaturers who have used the D500 and were hoping for a replacement. As a Nikon Z50 owner (great travel camera), the new Z50 II not having IBIS and the same awful battery, I will not be upgarding to this new model.
I would like Nikon to release Nikon Z80 Camera to replace
Nikon D500 and direct competition against canon R7
Nikon need to remember they are a household name along with canon
Nikon have failed sports photographers and journalists by not releasing better designed apps c size camera it is about time
Nikon should release Nikon Z80 camera
Thanks Abdul
