    Why not include a J class and 12 Metre match style racing in the Americas cup? I would watch. I would love to see full races of these classic boats. Call it Americas Cup Classic.

      Sod that - the UK has to win the Cup, and elect that future races are held on these absolute beauties! So much more exciting than the foiling monohulls we've had for the last few yeasr.

      couldn’t agree more. watching these beasts is a true joy! modern ACracing feels like it lacks elegance and class. they are crazy fast and the tip top of tech, but they just don’t move me when i look at them race.

    I remember an old J class sailor in an interview muttering about the fact that "real sailing" was over and now they were to do with dingies, these being the 12 metres.

    The amount of manual handling required to sail these legendary boats was insane, a testament to how racing has evolved over the last 4 decades

    • @dorothygale1104
      @dorothygale1104 Месяц назад +1

      It is the coordination of that insane manual handling that *is* the very essence and definition of sailing. The current designs competing for the Cup are a testament to technology evolution, for sure, but not a testament to any sailing skill evolution. Why even bother to have any crew at all, as technology exists to operate vessels without any crew.

I sailed Gretel ( 12m Ozzy AC entry) Apollo (Maxi yatch racer) A racing trimaran and a large day trip (50 pax + crew) and loved it.. This new aproach.. yeah.. It's exciting.. it's a totally diferent sailing.. but not less real.. it's the new REAL ;-)) {and I wish I was young enough to try foils.. but hey.. memories are cool ;-)))

    • @HFHoss75

      When half that crew doesn't know how to sail, the sport has definitely lost a step.

    • @KnugLidi
      @KnugLidi Месяц назад +1

      no sail changes during the races = boring races / less technical skill to shine for the crew. Less teamwork, less coordination. Crew is irrelevant, basically 4 grunts 2 'drivers', 2 trimmers pressing buttons.

    • @TheGrundigg
      @TheGrundigg Месяц назад +1

      @@KnugLidi When the design is so good that it doesn't need to change sail downwind it is just objectively a better race boat. You can still sail with a spinnaker on any hobby or race boat you want. Let others do what they want too.

    • @dorothygale1104
      @dorothygale1104 Месяц назад +2

      @@TheGrundigg You do realize that the winner of the Cup decides what type of design will sail in the next Cup, right. It is possible that J-class vessels will be sailing for the next Cup. The current foils competing in this year’s Cup is not a design that is set in stone.

    • @TheGrundigg
      @TheGrundigg Месяц назад
