Big Thief - Live at Gateway City Arts (Full Set)

- September 13, 2017 - We traveled a few hours west on the Mass Pike to capture Brooklyn-based Big Thief perform live at Gateway City Arts in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Guitarist Buck Meek was not able to make the show so the band’s set took on a particularly intimate vibe interspersed with moments of full-volume energy. Amongst the backdrop of late summer cicadas by the canals of downtown Holyoke-- Adrianne, Max and James were kind enough to talk with us about becoming a band, touring, and the importance of being present as much as possible.

thank you i love all songs but masterpiece one of my fav
I just discovered this band tonight. My life, forever changed.
i feel you. this band's changed my entire fall and it's only august.
Would love this on spotify as a live album
ugh same
This is my favorite way I’ve ever heard Velvet Ring performed
Good thing that guy that is 9 ft tall got in on the front row
You can always count on it. 😒
i come back to this video often, hope they have a live album version on spotify at some point
Adrianne is just totally wonderful and amazing but the drummer is really good. He is so into it and finding every little nuance to play. And that bass guy is so unique and 100% focus on Adrianne. This band is really something.
@Ellis Bell James is amazing on the drums I agree and Max is such a big part of their sound as well. They are the band that I know of where everyone is totally engaged in the performance like no-one else and plays exactly what they should play almost all of the time. I do wish to see them live one day.
@Ellis Bell You too have a great day Ellis. Peace
Seeing them live was like a 1.5 hour musical trance. I was worried about COVID but have no regrets.
They meld together nicely. Way too many modern musical groups overplay themselves. I like the open spatials.
They really seem to genuinely have an affection for one another, don't they?
And Buck Meek never again missed a Big Thief gig.
Incredible. Adrienne puts down the guitar and just nails Mary. So haunting. LOVE LOVE LOVE this version. Her voice is so amazing.
nice reference
I've just discovered Big Thief and I'm totally bowled over by them. Wonderful songwriting.
SAME. Instant obsession! True Beauty
The volume of her writing is incredible . endless creativity just pours out of her. Whether solo or for the band and the quality is unmatched for me. I search hard too :)
She is the shit. Buck meek is bad to the bone too
@@jules0016 ?man what’s wrong with u
what artistry. what honesty, what a talent. how lucky is everyone who ever gets to hear this?
Buck Meek's non appearance gave this audience and alt performance, but one that was just as powerful but in a different way. Such a versatile band.
yes!!
didn't even notice. Sorry, Buck, but the band still mesmerizes without you.
@@agardenmom well that's your opinion.
@@agardenmom guess you weren’t listening?
Why isn't he here? Did he join after this or he just couldnt play that day?
What they did with Mary is just so inspired. They become the stage into a playground where to change everything and explore. Amazing
Adrianne is born in the wrong century, but thank the universe that she is in the here and now and bringing us her talents.
Right century, but I agree with the rest! Born in another century, she could not have been so open in her songwriting about her relationships with other women, and that's a running theme in a lot of her songs. As a woman who is also queer, she would have struggled for acceptance in the industry no matter her talents.
@@t4exanadu yes!!!
Love this version of velvet ring
Like it also! Got a Nirvana vibe to it
I love Adrianne's guitar and overalls. These songs feel like sunken treasure. Love this band!!
her voice singing those melodies completes this particular circle. love her voice
This version of great white shark is just…wowzers. So powerful to watch. James is an incredible percussionist.
'this'...probably the most motivational life advice I've heard this year
I’m just so lucky to be alive and be able to listen big thief’s music
This is so well filmed and audio is great. It brings out the beauty of the music so well.
Precious voice. And I like the story how they started the band.
Love you all. Love Max Olí…. Watever. Great musician.
and then we started playing adrienne's songs. . . Thank goodness. What an intelligently compelling talent, and the assemblage just explosively GOOD! Wonder-full work!
Big Thief - I think I love you. Thank you, all the way from Northumbria, the northern border of England and Scotland x
It’s fitting that, with a professional street urchin type of brilliance, Big Thief sneaks away with your heart.
Dafuq is Buck? Not the same without him but still a magical performance as always. Especially this version of Mary, with bass and drums only, definitely a different vibe.
I absolutely love this show.
Thank you... for the synchronicity of audio and video..
I've just discovered them. So great! Long time since I felt so much for a new band. The only singer ever that slightly reminds me of Canadian Mary Margaret O'Hara.
I fucking LOVE this music holy shit.
I want to stay lost in this and never return to soul-suck-land
i love hearing artists live so much
The last song in this set has a very Patti Smith feel to it. I can't wait to them live in Boston later this month!
I miss live music
Finalmente possiamo ascoltare con gusto dell'ottima musica, una bellissima voce e grandi musicisti. !!!
What a great show this was. So happy I was there and to find this video now up!
ParhelionMedia fuckin’ lucky guy u are
So I've mentioned on one of their other videos that the way she speaks reminds me of Elliott Smith, and now I'm realizing that she actually looks like him too, and it's really trippin me out.
Some of the their songs have a definite Smith vibe too.
Holy shit bud you ain’t lying hahahahaha excellent observation.. consider this my sending you a thank you note
cannot unsee
Her and Elliott share the same sort of energy.
What if he never died... got a sex change, went on hormone treatment therapy and became Adrianne Lenker. 😳
Listening to this as I am booking a ticket to their concert in London. So excited as I haven't been to a concert in too long of a time!
How was it?
I love these guys for many reasons but I'm enjoying the perspective they gave on taking care of oneself and Spirit. :)
What a Big Thief !!!! quel casse !!! i'm in love
They met on a street? I can't even....
meant to be...
When you think about it, most people meet at least somewhere near a street, cuz there are a lot of streets with lots of people near them. People generally don't meet in the middle of a wilderness.
@@patrickhawkinson8399 Semantics are fun... but he probably wouldn't have worded it that way if it wasn't an important note for their story.
Jan Mikicki Yeah, but even stranger because they went to Berkeley College of music at the same time and then met randomly in Brooklyn.
This is my belated Christmas present.
Thank You.
xXx
"10 miles away" sounds like heaven
thanks josh klinghoffer for makin a big thief cover, i've just discover the greatest band ever
i love their music so much
Screaming and crying
awesome performance ! 4 years back
People often comment about how different they all seem from one another - a perfectly mismatched band. It's great to hear how that's the case, all meeting by chance one by one.
Una banda memorable, y vocalista extraordinaria.
Came here via Sam Fender! Oh wow amazing.
I love listening to this instead of the Spotify one
Loving the Black & White video! Looks awesome!
§gotta just luv James.
Loved James solo on Paul to pull it back together!! He's a sweetie.
wow mick fleetwood is looking great!
I hope 'Shoulders' makes it into the fourth album, we need a studio version.
shoulders was written around the same time that paul was.. in 2014. i suppose that its a bit late for that song to make a future project. there must be some reason for it.
@@eVidentt think Shoulders would have been out of place on UFOF...too 'rocky' for what's ostensibly a 'folky' lp...as would 'Not', another song that's been around a while but not released...they are still including both in their current sets, though, so i suspect they'll see the light of day at some point
@@Dangermoose-rv6bb not deserved so much better
We got it you muthas!!
Sobbing
this is just beautiful
so lovely
first ever listen to these n im hooked. very fuckin good.
I would love to see them live sometime.
Did u ever see them?
@@ewlivia nop ‼️😔💔
I can't find my good headphones... :( I'll have to wait until later, I can tell I'm going to need them.
GRADO SR80 made in NY, just as Big Thief, does this justice :)
Adrianne is such a powerhouse. Someone commented on another video that they believe her to be the second coming, and I wholeheartedly agree.
good band, good videographer
Very good!!! 🌙🌒🌗🌔🌕🎧🎧🎧
i am immersed and if i could be any more immersed i would drown and be okay with that.
chicos los amo sigan hablando de yoga
accidentally listened on 1.5x and I didn't notice until halfway into the second song. honestly not that bad lol
What's that last song that Mary turns into? Is that just improvised?
If we actually realized what we lose every day
And what we really have
….
The tall guy in the front row looks fuckin pissed that Buck isn't there 😤 🤣
she's like a to kill a mocking bird living her story out in the stage dream
I'm often moved to misty eyes, dew drops...
"She's talking to god"
13:50 🤣 amazing
Anyone know what this guitar is at 14:13 ? It looks amazing with those P90's , almost looks like an Epiphone headstock my connection is blurry , thanks

Where’s buck 😨
Loosen my hand from the beckoning night...
Food in my heart
Drummer brings the rock
How did they play Holyoke and I fucking missed this lol
Missing buck though
wait.. where's Buck Meek?
Why not 'Not' ?
`not´ was written 7 weeks after this show.
@@bj-ul9ch oh you and your "facts".

where has buck been? is he still in the band?
During the late Summer/Fall he was recording his own album in Texas. He's still very much in the band!
so glad to hear that he's still in the band!
Not the same without him!
i agree
Matt M sadly when i saw them he wasnt there :'(
