Big Thief: Live At SXSW 2017 - FULL CONCERT | NPR Music

- For Big Thief, fragility and power come inextricably intertwined. Singer and guitarist Adrianne Lenker may let her songs sit and seethe for long stretches, but those slow builds only maximize the catharsis of the big, loud, high-volume bursts of force that follow.
Onstage at Stubb's BBQ in Austin, Texas - recorded live Wednesday as part of NPR Music's SXSW showcase - Lenker brought a mix of new material and songs from last year's terrific Masterpiece. Throughout the set, Big Thief's sound billowed out in grand waves, matching the large stage and open-air setting, and by the end of "Masterpiece" (the band's signature song so far), Lenker was on her back, lost in the intensity of the moment. It felt like just the beginning for a band with a big, bright future.

"For Big Thief, fragility and power come inextricably intertwined". YES
they are all so in love with what they do, it's so incredibly evident. can't imagine how inspiring it would be for any aspiring musicians to be around their passion
Do you think everyone has that passion within them?
@@allyson-- yes but few discover/utilise it
@@benddawson it's too bad how many underutilized resources our planet holds whether its the downtrodden people or the unequal distribution of goods like food & shelter.
@@allyson-- very true but I don't think majority enough will realise soon enough to make a difference, not in the near future anyway. We love to waste because as a collective we're too lazy to innovate, invent and better ourselves and the world.
Are we "lazy" or are we not supported under current systems? I think if stress related to finances & staying afloat were removed, people would have freed mental space to explore their passions rather than worrying about whether it's profitable
big thief never fails to make me cry
I know! Every single time I’m overwhelmed and start crying
you saw the masterpiece, it was a lot like them :)
I've never in my life seen a band with that kind of chemistry.
Check out Deerhoof
also, check out "the band" their live performances are heartbreaking - think the drummer and other artists are somewhat influenced by them
@@kenwat5618 would love an example to check out cause for some reason it’s kinda hard to search their live stuff for me
@@coltonc8562 the last waltz, directed by martin scorcesse! there is a few clips on youtube
@@coltonc8562Look up their live version of Coyote with Joni Mitchell. I don't even mesa with the album version, the live version from the Last Waltz is incredible (Joni's performance doesn't hurt one bit either lol). But you should honestly just watch the entirety of The Last Waltz, it's fantastic.
Every time I come back to Big Thief it's a fantastic experience
This year I have fallen in love with the most fantastic and wonderful women + I have found Big Thief. What a year!
My 2022 in a nutshell :)
Ton of passion comes through in their songwriting and playing. Always fantastic to watch.
the love and respect intern is a marvel in music and is what makes a diference
Watched these guys perform in Sydney, Australia a couple of weeks. Needless to say, it was easily the best gig I have been to. Such an honest and pure voice.
I was there too. Such incredibly beautiful music.
No superficiality and no walls...pure...lovely....sincere...vulnerable....present.
Love this.... authentic, raw. This hits the nail on the head- in terms of lyrics, vocals, emotional performance!
Mary is one of my favorite songs of the past decade. Sublime.
"Sublime" you couldn't have put it better. Truly sublime... ugh...
Actually I think Mary is a big theif song. Not sublime.
John Walsh Would be interesting if Sublime covered it. Badfish rather haha.
Masterpiece was one of the top 2016 albums, no doubt
Luis Moldes And they might've topped themselves with Capacity, a more intimate album
Hey, Universe, thank you for Adrianne and Big Thief. Much love! X
i love this band so freaking much
Her mid-set speech really hits hard after a year of gig-less covid lockdown
live big thief is the ultimate soul food
@NPR Music - forever grateful for your showcasing of artists that would otherwise not allow me to hear the beautiful music you capture. ❤
Love it, such a great band !
what a setlist. nearly flawless.
they are SO much better live than recorded. love this
Totally agree
Lucky enough to catch them in K'zoo @ Bell's Eccentric Cafe last Saturday while in town. Unreal show. Very delicate and powerful. Loved it!!
Raw and true......................lovin this..................drawn from a deeper well.....lovenlivenpeace
Me encanta esta banda! Buena de las nuevas 😎
Vocals are so good.
i Love Big Thief!!!
love it !
Why does this work? By God, it does though. Buck's guitar solos make me laugh with joy as he tries to harness the weirdness. Their harmonies are divine. Adrienne's lyrics, vocals, pain leave me in a heap both sobbing and ever so blasted joyful.
Mary is such a great song!!
adore!
so comforting.
If you guy’s knew everything you make me fell with your music ❤️
Bientot en France, bien envie de les voir ;)
Shark Smile is perfect!!!
killer setlist. talk about playing the hits, they went hard.
such a good set
Have tickets to see them in Glasgow May 2019 - hope that they play as well as they did in this performance.
Ha ha
Ha
very good.
The sleeves of her jumper would make great tattoos.
Great! I love you very much and I will see you on Stage.
I really like their sound. I can only imagine how cool it was to be there to experience all of it in the moment!
Great Big Thief. See you in Utrecht in February 2022.
loooove this band - so special --- why is it mixed like this?? driving me MAD -- anyways thank uuu BT TYTYTYBT TLFEXOXOX
parallels live is the best thing that has ever happened
Parallels ❤️
I’m only ten minutes in but a.) this is such good music and b.) I’m so pumped bc just last night I wanted to draw specifically a girl rocking out on a guitar in overalls (been thinking about marceline from adventure time recently) but I couldn’t find any pics of dynamic poses that weren’t a weird amalgamation of a stock photo and a pin up girl. This is perfect though, can’t wait to practice dynamic poses using screenshots (and I can’t believe she’s literally wearing what I wanted the drawing to wear)
love this band though
my heartbeat feels like the countdown clock till they come back to San Diego -- wait a second, it IS the countdown clock till they're here again.
CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THEM AT RED ROCKS JULY 2023!!!!
I don't know if my heart can handle if their tour this summer gets cut because of the COVID-19.
Saw you guys open up for Belle and Sebastian. Amazing show!
as a big fan of bas i would have loved to be there. But wow this band............
Looking froward to seeing them live in Winnipeg in July at the Winnipeg Folk Fest.
she looks super cute with short hair, and holy fuck they are talented, they sound perfect on the stage.
Marissa Nadler/ Sonic Youth I'm sold.
There aren't enough superlatives to describe the magnificence of Big Thief. They rock. End of.
Super boring
Matt Bachman (of Mega Bog) sighted at 13:07.
(Making a Matt-rocking-out face!)
yeah!! I noticed him too!
ORANGE
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL! ❤
3:28 what was Alan Cummings so unhappy about?
so. fucking. good.
pterodactyl scream in the audience at 13:54
Couldn't be a plain old terradactyl; too mainstream.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pterodactylus
Now you know what to do!?
Again at 25:07
Is this scream a thing?
Can someone do a set list for this quickly please, thanks in advance
This is such a cool band--they're like some weird Venn diagram where Cowboy Junkies and Silversun Pickups overlap...
@9:35 That drummer jivin'
the art of dissonant resolve is a fine line to toe for a whole show, so i recognize their restraint and their artistry, but masterpiece is a direct contradiction which i love and recommend to convey the charm of
buck meek is great!
Anyone know what shoes she’s wearing
I found out , they are red wings - iron ranger , maybe charcoal
20:45 Cooool jaja
Is "Shoulders" studio-recorded? Spotify doesn't have it
Not yet, I am hoping it will be on their next album.
it's gonna be on Two Hands
Thought this was Feist for a moment
The guitarists were married at one point
I loved the first song "orange" but I'm struggling to find it anywhere. Any suggestions?
they said in Bristol that there is a new album out in august. so it might be on that
Matthew Reid Damn that was quick
Matthew Reid it's out June 9. Title is Capacity. Oddly enough Orange is not on the tracklist for the album. I assume it's new song but strange that they would open SXSW with a new song that's not on the album.
Drumber smiling at the saddest part of the song
he has laughed on diver)
Poor buck no mic signal 😢
The sound mix is awful....live they are amazing, Adrainnes guitar is way too soft and the bass and drums sound like shit, sounds like it was a desk feed and was not remixed for broadcast. Buy the record it's awesome.
Adrianne's guitar is too quiet in this mix relative to Buck's but otherwise this recording sounds good to me. I'm playing it loudly right now on a decent hifi (big floor standing dual concentric Tannoys). This is the best quality recording of their new stuff like Orange and Shark Smile that I have heard online. Glad to have this to listen to until the new album comes out. Just saw them live on Saturday too.
I noticed Buck's playing was different on this night. I completely understand the musician he is, but i thought at this set, his tone and articulations were being reduced. I'm pretty sure he was playing out of the backline amps, aka Not his usual amp. makes sense
He's playing a Matchless...if that's a backline amp that's the best backline ever
even in this terrible mix .... well
And she's playing p90's thru a Magnatone. Great set up.
Thank you Sinéad O'Connor.
Sinead O'Connor can't touch this man lol lets be real
@@natashafontaine1220 Sinead O'Connor's best work is some of the greatest music of the past 30 years. Just because she's inconsistent doesn't change that.
Sound person... bass is clipping like fuck. I can't listen to this any longer. Sad!
The way Buck Meek shakes his head annoys me so much.
Only listened to them seconds but, came here to criticize and my only complaint seems to be that this sounds rehearsed. Like it though
This is awful and super boring. Lots of out of tune singing.
Its crazy how much worse she looks with short hair
Weak
