Back from a shift in a homeless hostel for 16 to 24 year olds. Half midnight. Time to chill. Found Big Thief. Never heard them. No idea they existed. Pressed play with no expectations whatsoever and fell completely in love with your beautiful music. Thank you x
I love How Buck breaks a string at 23:07. Yet the incident totally fits the song by adding even more aggression, rawness, and grit. He is such an evocative and unorthodox player. This band is amazing - totally unique.
@@private6523 well thats your opinion. I love his singing, it matches really good with Adriannes voice. Also love his guitar playing hes very unique in the things he does and you can really feel every note hes playing
I love these kids. I've met them and nabbed a few autographs. I used to play lead guitar in a band. Breaking a string is inevitable and always a fun challenge.
Every time I listen to music from KEXP, it's like when friends take a guitar and start to play it around a fire. Everything is charming, and warming and Big Thief amplifies this sensation. Thanks
Fucking amazing band man. You have got a lot of similar low fi/ indie/alt bands from the States over the past 10 or so years. And although most aren't terrible there is only a handful who really stand out with a touch of class and genius, Big Thief are one of them bands. Desperate to see them live.....
So much subtlety with this band, in the songwriting and their demeanor and the way they play together. Black Diamonds from 2:37 to the end is just sublime.
Great job KEXP, the sound on this is great, Cheryl, lovely & Big Thief..........stunning. I saw them last summer at end of the road festival (UK) & there are always some amazing bands that play there. This band were (& are) on another plane though. I can't explain adequately just how they affect me, except to say that there is something beyond the mere physical around them & their music.
Practice. This isn't the first time it's happened, and it won't be the last. When things go wrong - that's when you find out who the professionals are.
thanks Sonny wr, Rob Broome. I love hearing good anecdotes of bands I love, just ups the appreciation to another level (which in this case is pretty freakin high) . My shop has these 2 albums so definitely stopping there today or this weekend......must haves. Oh, and they're playing not too far in San Diego (road trip!) and down the road in Phoenix (November)!!!
The melodies are just so beautiful, and when combined with the lyrics and delivery, I tear up way too often T_T also Buck's shirt is crazy where can I find it
A little late but both, Adrianne and Buck both play beautifully crafted Collings guitars. I assume Buck plays his I-30 fully hollow prototype here. He also owns a standard I-35 though. Those typically look more like the guitar he’s playing here, as the usual I-30s come with a floating bridge instead. However, as his I-30 is a prototype, it might as well be the one you can hear in this performance.
Is Buck Meek out of the band? I saw them a couple weeks ago and he wasn't there and I was really sad. They were still great. This was recorded in august. Makes wonder what happened.
@@patriciofernandez2711 He's (strangely) criticizing what Cheryl says at the beginning, "We're really, really loving the record." I assume he believes she was referring to only herself as "we" when she obviously meant the staff, herself included, at KEXP.
Very weird comment. Don't see what her haircut has to do with anything, and seeing a band 'live' on RUclips is incomparable to seeing them live properly - saw them a couple of months ago and they were phenomenal.
that song 'Mary' is just too beautiful for this world.
its absolutly crazy how good that song is, specially on this live version (which is different from the album)

so six of them youre not sure of their age?
Sick humble brag
That's wonderful that you do that kind of work. It's needed. Thank you.
I fall in love with this band all over again every time I hear them.

Absolutely agree with you
i spend the first song watching him playing guitar confused regarding what the hell is he actually doing.
@@enparticular I really dont think he is edgy and cool, I think his guitar work is awful, and I wish he just wouldnt sing.

Something about this band. I like it!

The host deserves credit for great questions in the interview portion - beautiful performance
Amazing. 5 years later, watching the growth is like I said amazing.
This version of Mary is perfect!!!
The lyric melodies and and words are incredible. Great song writing

Exactly. Thank you.
They make me wordless
Hey, Universe, thanks for Big Thief. You did good! X
Whoo!
Love everything about this band, they're special
This is such mature and moving music. Capacity just gets better and better.
Just saw them a couple days ago. Love the depth in the poetry. Adrianne has a great stage presence, as does her band.

Right? I fucking LOVE it.
La mejor banda que escuché estos últimos años, emocionan!!
this is one of my favorite videos on the internet

now, this is the band i`ve longed for, far too long.
My favourite band of the last couple of years - saw them live on Wednesday - blew me away.
Amazing Band...Brilliant Songs
I'm not a guitar player, or really a musician myself at all... but how does a guitarist just shrug off a broken string like that!? Amazing.
Practice. This isn't the first time it's happened, and it won't be the last. When things go wrong - that's when you find out who the professionals are.
WHOA. Old soul. Beautiful music.
I met her in Liverpool when they supported Conor Oberst and she’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met
My band supported them in Edinburgh and they were all so nice, amazing band

Black diamonds is sooooo good
fantastic band. wish they played mythological beauty, though.

Glasgow Scotland, Hope to catch a gig someday
BRILLIANT!
Fabulous
Absolutely brilliant
Son buenísimos 🙂
Brilliant. Wow.
I need that CD.
im trying really hard to not burn out Mary, its not working .
I hope these cats are around for a very long time.
A cat has nine lives (albums)
So bummed I missed their recent tour with Little Wings!
best thing to come out of US since Johnny Cash
Shame they didn't play Haley or Mythological Beauty, two best songs on the album
blablabla
Stoked to see them on 10/19/19 in Madison...Palehound opens....anybody seen either?
I'm seeing them on 10/18!
The melodies are just so beautiful, and when combined with the lyrics and delivery, I tear up way too often T_T
also Buck's shirt is crazy where can I find it
I’d like to see Chris Pontius take a few more solos
The way she speaks reminds me of Elliott Smith.
Her solo stuff reminds me so much of Elliott
Jamie Jessica Pratt reminds me of Nick Drake as well
@@ElishaDavid love Jessica Pratt
I want some of what they're on. Love n stuff to you guys.
Nice!
Wonderful.
Warren Zevon, the headless gunner ghost that
warped into a chick who sings as good as him. Masterpiece is aptly titled.Respect n Love.
This is great. Hey, how come KEXP has never had The New Year on their show..?
They steal the show, hence big thief
the drummer reduces me to an emotional puddle
looks like a twin of Barnett's drummer
Nick Brown what the fuck are you on?
Sweet. 😉
The worst thing about this performance is that it happened before they wrote Not
wujatt36 to me it’s happened before UFO. Love that album.. But I really have to dig more into of their earlier work.
It eventually came out! Also on KEXP, even better than the album version ❤️
🥰💥⛅
Who dislike this music? Probably people who have never heard music for people above 12 years!
there is some of the divine elliott smith in her
where did you get that voice from
(i got it from my daddy!)
👍🇩🇪🇩🇪🤫i like it.🍻
itong big thief lang ang gusto ko, hindi ang presidente namin 😫
Hahaha that was pretty funny.

Think I saw somewhere that he was working on some solo stuff and wasn't able to join them for a string of shows
He's in this vid
I'm pretty sure he's still in the band. I saw them as a trio a few weeks back as well and they mentioned that he was recording
tkeajax video was recorded in august. I saw them live in September;)
watchthesky07 ah they didn't mention anything at the show I was at
Who is the Big Thief?
fkin hot
what kind of bass is that? would love to know!

I hate myself for it, but she reminds me of Ymir's titan form...
Me sento male
Te chiamo n’ambulanza
te sei ripresa?
I barely know how to write a fan letter to muse
What kind of guitar is she playing? Anyone?
its a semi hollowor semi acoustic guitar ! often used in jazz and blues !
Marguerite Blanche What brand i mean. Thanks!
collings! out of texas
It's her own custom built collings (worth about $4000) made out of a single slab of mahogany
I don't think people of my age should be saying things like 'we're really loving'. It embarrasses our children.
What do you mean?

Prefer the full band version of Mary a lot more I must say
Outoffjaycaselkatebynoldzajelena
Whats the deal with the guitarist
love me some good ol white people music
What on Earth is she on about?
sound isn't that great
What's with the far-left haircut? Oh and they can't play live but decent studio version.
Pantheronics Have you seen them live?
Yup, on youtube though. I like them tbf, its just the live version always turn out to be disappointing.
Very weird comment. Don't see what her haircut has to do with anything, and seeing a band 'live' on RUclips is incomparable to seeing them live properly - saw them a couple of months ago and they were phenomenal.
I hope they are phenomenal live. I've yet to see that in any of the recordings.
Pantheronics have you seen their NPR Tiny Desk session? If that's not phenomenal I don't know what is.
