I assume you are aware that this was based on a real political event? It happened between the years of 1972 and 1973 just outside of La Grange, Texas. Had to do with public political reputations and a tough-on-crime attitude, even though as far as brothels go, at least as far as was documented, the Chicken Ranch was one of the most wholesome brothels in US history.

At 22, I spent 9 months deployed in the Persian Gulf, my long time boyfriend decided to stop talking to me shortly before Christmas and broke my heart for the first time.
At 24, I had just left my abusive boyfriend right before Christmas, after he started threatening to hit me and cheated on me with his ex. I spent the holidays by myself that year too.
The lyrics perfectly capture what was going through my mind those years, if I'd ever have someone who loved me to spend the holidays with again (my family is all deceased/estranged).
Now at 28 I have a supportive husband who loves me and I finally feel like we have our own little family, but I will always remember those hard candy Christmases and appreciate what I have now.

I never saw this movie, but I love this song. I think I'll watch it. Did you notice, that even surrounded by beautiful and talented women, there's just something about Dolly that sets her apart. Not sure what it is, maybe just her homespun wholesomeness. It's a hard candy christmas here, but maybe the memories will help. I wish you all peaceful wishes for comfort, love and joy at this time and all year long.

HappyandAtheist it’s not always that simple. As a former Deputy Probation Officer I have seen women trafficked, selling their bodies to support drug habits and end up diseased and ill, pimps taking advantage of these women in cruel ways. In a legal setting such as a business is obviously much better but many see no other way and resort to this. It would appear they are willing but they are desperate, it steals their souls.....high rates of substance abuse, depression and suicide go hand in hand with this profession. Until you work with these people it’s hard to understand what goes on behind the scenes, truly sad in many cases.

    Lyrics:
Hey, maybe I'll dye my hair
    Maybe I'll move somewhere
    Maybe I'll get a car
Maybe I'll drive so far they'll all lose track
    Me, I'll bounce right back
    Maybe I'll sleep real late
    Maybe I'll lose some weight
    Maybe I'll clear my junk
Maybe I'll just get drunk on apple wine
    Me, I'll be just
    Fine and dandy
Lord, it's like a hard candy Christmas
    I'm barely getting through tomorrow
    But still I won't let
    Sorrow bring me way down.
    I'll be fine and dandy
Lord, it's like a hard candy Christmas
    I'm barely getting through tomorrow
    But still I won't let
    Sorrow bring me way down.
Hey, maybe I'll learn to sew
Hey, maybe I'll just lie low
    Maybe I'll hit the bars
Maybe I'll count the stars until dawn
    Me, I will go on
    Maybe I'll settle down
    Maybe I'll just leave town
    Maybe I'll have some fun
Maybe I'll meet someone and make him mine
    Me, I'll be just
    Fine and dandy
Lord, it's like a hard candy Christmas
    I'm barely getting through tomorrow
    But still I won't let
    Sorrow bring me way down.
    - I'll be fine and dandy -
Lord, it's like a hard candy Christmas
    I'm barely getting through tomorrow
    But still I won't let
    Sorrow bring me way down.
    ~ I'll be fine and dandy ~

However, if it did, it would undercut the lesson of this song and of life: Nothing lasts forever. Changes happen, many that are out of your control, but you must face them with a positive attitude and with a hope that something better will come along.
