FILM DESCRIPTION:
Miss Mona (Dolly Parton) runs the Chicken Ranch, a brothel with a long history in a small Texas town. The locals have a good relationship with the institution, and Mona is respected in the community. The sheriff, Ed Earl Dodd (Burt Reynolds), also looks out for the Chicken Ranch due to his past with Miss Mona. However, when pious reporter Melvin Thorpe (Dom DeLuise) exposes the brothel, outside interests want it shut down, putting the governor (Charles Durning) in a tough spot.

This is honestly the most oddly wholesome feeling brothel I have ever seen in a movie.... huh.
@charla rene lol women are more ruthless than men
That's called Hollywood trying to quietly desensitize you.
MrDarth, it is just a little bitty pissant country place, and there's nothing dirty going on.
@@Ironwind1972 this is based on a real place
the movie is a great fun. It's not dirty or filthy or even in bad taste.... it's cheeky and a little naughty, but it's not offensive unless you are complete prude.
Dolly's corset had her snatched to the gawds.

Yes!
Dolly is *Gorgeous*
My sister had a dress kinda like that and she wore it to prom
I was nervous someone might notice where she got the idea
The black dress is gorgeous but it isn't saying a whole lot. The dress doesn't make Dolly, Dolly makes the dress. She makes "them" look good.
someone asked the question "what if disney ran a brothel?"

Then the Hoop Dee Doo would be adults only.

We need more questions of this calibre.
There’s really nothing like Dolly Parton’s voice, is there?
There is nothing like DOLLY
Amen to that
No there’s not.
It’s hypnotizing! And she is AWESOME in this!!!
She has a voice? I was distracted.
This is the sort of leadership we need more of in the workplace.

The thing I loved most about this movie is Miss Mona was just a philanthropist in the community as she is in real life. She donated constantly to town causes and bought uniforms for the little league teams.
Just like dolly then she is a force for good
Nah, she was a businesswoman, and part of being in business is getting along with the community. Amazon also donates to charity, in fact, Amazon users can select a charity and part of the money they spend will go to it.
What was on those uniforms? Did they say “Miss Mona’s”?
The woman Miss Mona is based on, Edna Milton, was a civic philanthropist while she owned the Chicken Ranch.
That is how the American West was urbanized. Not by cowboys or gold seekers, but by brothels.
Had to do a paper for my Texas Government class. All the professor told us was it had to have SOMETHING to do with Texas Government or Politics. Well, this was right after Burt Reynolds passed, so my Daddy was on a Burt Reynolds kick so we had watched this. That night my parents poked their heads in and ask, "How goes the studying?" I told them it was hard to focus on the details of the (SEVEN!) Texas Constitutions when I had the songs from this film stuck in my head. My dad jokingly said, "Maybe it's a sign that that's what you should do your paper on." But my Momma said, "No, seriously. Isn't it based on a true story?" So I did the research and presented it to the professor, under the thesis that the politicians of Texas had no problem with the Chicken Ranch existing until it was brought into the limelight and made them look corrupt, then it had to go ASAP. My professor was impressed and I got a 100 on the paper. 😀
Nice! :D
Wow. I've dreamed of this scenario for so many reasons over the years. I'm glad you got to experience this and scored a 100.
I used this show in an example of political variance in the US for my history of music theatre class
Ohhhh I love to dance a little side step,
Now they see me now they don't I've come and gone!
If only all teachers were like that hahaha congrats too!
It's a shame Dolly didn't star in more movies, especially musicals.

This one wasn’t a hit
More than Billy Joel, just 1
I have the slightest hint that there may, in fact, be something dirty going on here...
No, just small thrills 😝😝🤣
Don't forget all the good will!
Those that are married - they might not have told their wives but their wives probably know. Remember later on we meet a woman who's late husband was up there every week, said she appreciated the time she had to herself. In any case, there's no drunken brawls, no shady deals going on, every one is polite, no one is forced to go up there - the customers come of their own free will and the women who work there work there because they choose to, they weren't blackmailed, kidnapped, manipulated or in any way forced to work there.
@@agenttheater5 I agree. "There's nothing dirty going on" was probably supposed to be the standard reply the ladies gave anyone from the outside who asked what was happening there.
@agenttheater5 prostitution can only exist in highly inequitable society. No healthy woman choses to be a wh ore.
Dolly's voice can't be matched because no matter what she's singing you can just hear how happy she is to be singing it.
Yep. But this is one song you won't hear playing at Dollywood heheh
Its tragic that as beautiful and perfect as Dolly was during this era she thought that she was "fat"!!!
What she’s sooo pretty
Hannah Axton you can fight me
Princess Sparkle Pixie I think she looked amazing before she got a lot of “beauty work” done
Princess Sparkle Pixie I know.
I personally think she was a normal size during this era.
BACK THEN, SORRY..BUT.....
SHE WAS FAT!
A little background: Dolly and Burt were both EXTREMELY sick during the filming of this movie. Dolly was having major GI problems, and whatever Burt had, he was running a fever for much of it. That just goes to show you what troopers they were!
Poor Dolly, when you look at the tight girdles they put her in, it's a wonder she could BREATHE, let alone sing. But of course I imagine she dubbed the vocals in the studio where she could be comfortable and let it all out.
It's called being a PRO!
It shows you that both had unhealthy lifestyles. Burt Reynolds was an alcoholic and addicted to the sleep drug Halcion. His sick body was of his own making and it is right that he suffered for it. Any and all alcohol permanently damages the liver and organs. Serves him right. Your liver under your care. Neglect and abuse it, then you die a painful early, inglorious death.
Dolly Parton - Southern gal who ate a southern diet full of typical Southern comfort foods, like cornbread, roast pork with green beans and fried okra, and banana pudding. Parton also has a soft spot for a popular taco chain. These are carb heavy foods which set off inflammation in the gut and raise your insulin levels, overtax the pancreas, liver and gall bladder and gut lining. If she had GI tract issues, bloating, indigestion, sluggishness, low energy, etc., it all came from the rich food. All she had to do was fix the food, do fasting. She was fat too.
I don't feel sorry for, or praise anyone that indulges in self-destructive behavior. It is right that they should suffer for it. It is only through pain and suffering that we change for the better. You have to be disciplined in life, not self indulgent. There is always a heavy cost for self indulgence.
A lot of people would call out of work for less serious problems than those.
Dolly: It's just a little bitty pissant country place, nothing much to see
Also Dolly: does a grand entrance in a stunning evening gown, and changes into several stunning numbers throughout the song.
Those gowns she wears in this song are in her museum at Dollywood and they are just as spectacular in person. Dolly is literally everything
You have no idea how hard it is not to do my makeup like I did in the 80’s. So much blush in this clip. It’s not only the hair that dates it as 80’s, it’s all of it combined. The 80’s were my decade; I turned 20 in 1982 so I was smack in the middle of all of that fun during the best years of my life. Lol
Girl it's 2020 you can do as you please! The 80s and 90s are trending again so no one will tell you no!! Do that makeup and post it for the world to see I'm positive no one will judge you for it!
Ur lucky, my man who grew up in those times said they were awesome!!!
It was the best of times. Hopefully someone will invent a time machine and we can go back.
I also turned 20 in 1982 - we're the same age. I wore the stripes of blush and the blue eyeliner, and had the "spiral perm." I had fun in those days, but can't say I'm big fan of that look anymore.
I loved and miss the ladies with a big cloud of hair. I think the styles on Designing Women were the last great holdout.
The multitude of flavors she can layer into a musical phrase are just magical, especially combined with the breathy quality of her voice and the sweetness that coats it all. Every word, look, and movement just says quite plainly that she is exactly where she wants to be and doing exactly what she wants to be doing.
I love that all of the girls seem to have hobbies. Playing the flute or violin, photography, modeling. Very cool.
In this scene, Dolly is like Marilyn Monroe combined with Barbara Streisand’s performance in “hello, dolly”
Agreed
And now I have to watch ‘Hello Dolly’ haha
K P she is!!!
I always had a pic of those 2 and a good dose of Mae West.
Kinda wish Dolly was in Hello Dolly, or even for a limited run.
Dolly is and always will be an American treasure! Even today, she's so stunningly beautiful for her old age. And whenever she sings, I reach a state of euphoria that I can't reach from anything else! I can't even focus on writing this as I listen to the song cus I just wanna soak in her awesomeness! I hope people will remember her like we will remember Betty White. She's just that amazing!
Nothing sleazy about this. Pure CLASS performances. Thank you, Colin, Dolly, and cast.
That's Dolly in a word. Classy.

I did this musical in a dinner theater in the 90's and it was so fun. I wish Dolly had done more musicals. I'm so glad she is still with us. What a wonderful person she is!
Of course she slayed it. Look at her. She is a legend. An icon. Hands down whatever she touches turns to gold.
She's got a balcony you could quote Shakespeare from
Ophelia: You are keen, my lord, you are keen.
Hamlet: It would cost you a groaning to take off my edge.

One of the best movie musicals of all time! I thoroughly enjoyed it when it first came out in the theaters in 1982, and I enjoy it now.
I love how the 2 girls on the end gave the "good job "sign to each other. Never noticed in 40 years of watching this movie
I tell my teenagers:
I pay the rent and the food and the utilities
You keep your mind on your work responsibilities
Don't let your mouth overload your capabilities
And we can get along...lol!

That's funny. I like that.
I was OBSESSED with this movie when I was 7 or 8. Watched it every day and I still to this day know every single bit of dialogue...
The way Dolly says "yeah!" at the end is just the most precious, quintessentially her thing

Dolly Parton in Hello Dolly! I'd pay good money.
Possible reworked stage revival of Best Little Whorehouse in Texas?
She wrote the songs for 9 to 5 the musical.
Dolly did that all of the time when her time and GI problems could handle it. Her fans will find her.
I love how one of the girl's has a shoulder tat while singing how they can't have them. Though I guess you can argue a lil shoulder tat isn't as tacky as a tigh tat.
The rule was no tattoos on the thighs. If I recall, they're called tramp stamps - something you'd see with pimps
@@myladynaynay now days tramp stamps are the lower back but yeah it's about making them 'products' not employees
They said tats on the thighs specifically cause it was like a cattle being branded

On a very sad New Year's Eve thank you Dolly for givin an ol Texas girl a smile.
This is one of my favorite Dolly Parton movies to watch. She is a great actress and doing the movie with Burt Reynolds was great.
2:24 The anti tattoo line: "Branding belong on cows and that ain't what we selling"
while the dancer has ashoulder tattoo LOL
I guess they could just be referring to thigh tattos and such.
That's definitely the cringiest part of the movie. Still loved it.
And please don't show us no tattoos. No hogs and flowers on your THIGH. They all proceed to slap their thighs.
@@ahnyismarcell I think it’s “hearts and flowers.” lol.

We’d be both be Dolly and directing the audience…or better, the girls! Everyone would always be so shocked!😂😂😂

Why does 1982 look so much more ethnically diverse than anything that's been released in theaters in a decade?
Because back then it wasnt as forced
Because for one, they casted unambiguous black women in these movies. Today most black women featured are mixed.
always one race baiter
Dolly & Burt were perfect together in this movie. As was the rest of the cast. A great classic film!
My life was never quite the same after seeing Dolly Parton descend that staircase, in full drag, singing ragtime.
