Wyna Liu tried to sink me today with slang and pop culture. She failed!!! Share your results below!
Well done Art!
It's going to snow in Massachusetts later today. Good job!
I survived, but I'm glad I wasn't in a competition today! 🙂
You will be pleased to know that today's Connections difficulty is listed as 4.2. 🙂
@@ellensassani Holy moly!
Great solve on connections Art!
Art, SUCH an impressive connections solve today!! Kudos!
Well done Art! I don't think the point system matters much when not in competition mode. As long as you solve the connections you're good!
Dude I am so impressed with that Connections solve! That was epic! I got there, but had no idea on that purple. Well done!
That was worthy of one of your famous "Wooooooos!". I miss the woooo.
Bring back the woooooo!
Me toooooooooo!
I'm' almost sad you didn't guess BACON, it would have been wrong, but it was so possible.
I saw STEEL and CHARCOAL early so I got a clean solve on Strands. I also got connections in order with a slight stutter but there was no chance of me ever figuring out purple.
I’ll give you the full point Art! Not even a question in my books!
Totally agree. 😊

Got the purple by default. I've never been much of a Mariah Carey fan. I'm from an earlier era...more of a classic rock/disco-era fan (60s, 70s & 80s). HERO was the only one of these titles that was vaguely familiar but didn't know who sang it.
I thought the purple was elements in a romance novel.

“Even if you do terrible like me, as long as you have fun solving it that’s all that matters.” - Sums up my Wordle solve very eloquently!
Wordle in 6: LUPIN - MASON - BARON - TAXON - WAGON - CANON (Definitely was not ready for that roller coaster! 🤣)
Connections: (3 yellows & 1 blue) - YELLOW - GREEN - (3 blues & 1 purple) - half & half - BLUE - PURPLE
Slight correction: ‘Hackneyed’ comes from an archaic verb hackney meaning ‘use (a horse) for ordinary riding’, which morphed into ‘make commonplace by overuse’. Early in the 17th century a four-wheeled carriage called a ‘hackney cab’, which was specifically for carrying paid passengers, was introduced into England. Over time, those who drive around looking for paid passengers (a modern example being taxi drivers) became known as “hacks”.
A “hack writer” is only known as such by the quality of their work, not the profession itself.
So you had the right etymology, just the wrong profession.

Oh yeah baby, Mariah Carey is the queen! Teenage girl from the 90s here who was glued to MTV. This makes up for all the rappers I didn't know, that time I couldn't come up with name of the Space Cowboy song, the time they had those songs that were all first names and I was like huh?, and the time they had bands from the 60s in front of compound words, which I got just barely.
LUPIN OCEAN CANON. Ocean was the star as it left only canon and bacon. Looks to me as if Art had ocean bacon and canon as options after acorn.
I Scraped through connections was never getting purple though, massive kudos to Art for that
If I didn’t know the song Honey by Mariah Carey, then I would have never gotten the purple category, let alone solved the puzzle without any mistakes.

STRANDS 126, 8
Took me a long time but I did solve it in super hard mode. I was kind of on the right track with the clue but I was thinking colors and I saw CORAL GRAY STEEL TEAL and FLINT so I was lost on the spangram for a long time. Eventually I realized CORAL and GRAY trapped in the P in the 5th column. For while I thought maybe I was completely off with the colors, but eventually I started exploring whether GRAY could be extended into the spangram since STEEL and FLINT still looked really good and they are shades of gray. I guessed the spangram at least a minute before I could actually find it in the grid. Total solve time 10 minutes
CONNECTIONS: in progress. Once again I got the yellow and green in order, but I just hit 5 minutes and I have no clue about the other two categories and I am dead tired at 2:30 am so I am gonna sleep on it.

A hack is a taxi driver.
So is a hacker a taxi driverer.
You're right, Dan, and especially in New York, it's a very common way of referring to a cab driver. The cab itself is also called a hack, as in "he drives a hack for a living." Hack can also mean a writer or journalist of mediocre quality.
@@dora.7873 taxis in London were known as Hackney Cabs ( Black Taxis) before that there were Hackney carriages ( horse drawn) , I think called after a Mr Hackney.

Copper is a British slang term for a policeman. I assume 'cop' is just a shortening of that term.
Apparently "copper" is ultimately from Latin "capere", to take. The word "cop", meaning "take", has a life of its own e.g. "cop that!"
@@pwmiles56 That makes sense. I do love learning about the origins of words.
"Cop" is more common in the US, but I have heard "copper" used as well.
Yep. Citizens On Patrol ---> C.O.P. :-)
@@pwmiles56 and " cop yer whack " means to expire.
Really pissed about today's Connections - I shouldn't have to know any songs from an antiquated irrelevant singer from another country/culture other than the ones that match my tastes and morals. Anyway great video as always!
Art definitely didn't suggest any of that. Mariah Carey is one of the biggest international stars
yeah, even with movies too, people who just dont watch movies are at a disadvantage... the entire point of NYT games from the start was Word games, which test your vocabulary and phrases.. like how tf am i supposed to know all bond films in english when all the movie titles get translated differently into my language... or any other movie for that fact
@@petrkdn8224 Same with the category "New York Discrits" being yellow. It's hard for anyone outside of new york, but i guess they do have New York in the name. It's New York Times after all. A lot of answers revolve around mainly american culture, the world's a hard place.
@@martinkf Ultimately their newspaper caters to the residents of New York. Anyone who becomes interested beyond that scope is a bonus to them.
I got the Wordle in 4. My second guess was ocean. So I thought I nailed bacon in 3. Oops.
Strands took me a long while. I was thinking of newspapers as black n white and read all over, so. looking for newspaper or magazines things. I finally saw Charcoal, and I was on track.
Connections was fun and frustrating. I almost had a 10, but pop culture did me in for purple.

Holy moly! This one was completely crazy. It felt like every other guess was an eventful hail mary. I’m disappointed to not get another 8+, but if I’m going to get a lower score like this, this was about as fun a way for it to go as could be. My only score below 7.0 in about 7 weeks.
