    I wanted to visit Notre Dame so badly. I hope they rebuild although it'll never be the same. This is an absolute tragedy and even though I'm not a fan of the Catholic church this was a beautiful, historic piece of architecture full of stories. My heart goes out to every one affected in any way by the fire.

      @Jonathan Mahoney Yes I am aware of the facts, hence my post - They do NOT know what caused yet have categorically ruled out any deliberate/terror related cause before one inspector had set foot in the cathedral. And I quote -
      'The Paris prosecutor's office said it was treating the fire as an accident, ruling out arson and possible terror-related motives'
      An investigation of this magnitude usually takes months to conclude, so like I said incredibly fast detective work on their part, but thanks for your valid input.

    It isn't the money to rebuild Notre Dame that is the problem. It's the lack of stone cutters and masons, carpenters, and all the traditional building masters that will be the problem. We've gained much in terms of technology, but we have lost so much in terms of our ability to build structures of this awesome nature. I certainly hope Notre Dame will be rebuilt, but I despair at the loss so much of our cultural history. My ancestors prayed in this church over 800 years ago.

    This will become history itself. To me, this doesn't erase any history but only adds to it. Imagine in 100 years a school trip will be touring the church and the new stones or rafters will be pointed out. I went to Ely cathedral in England and that church had calapsed and they built it back bigger and now it's a focal point if it's history

    • @miranda.cooper
      @miranda.cooper 5 лет назад

      You know, that's the same thing I was saying to my dad. This only adds to the history of the building. If they rebuild it that is. If they (for whatever reason) don't rebuild it then THAT is a loss, but if it's rebuilt then it's really just another plot twist in the story... and everyone knows how much history loves plot twists.

  • @webleypug

    The cathedral has so inspired countless people throughout the ages. The WWII German commander of Paris, General Choltitz, a very obedient & efficient soldier, had direct ordered from Hitler to destroy it, as well as other Parisian structures of antiquity, before he evacuated the city in the waning days of the war. He simply couldn't do it.

    • @webleypug
      @webleypug 5 лет назад

      @BTIsaac- German demolition experts placed three tons of explosives into the crypt of Notre Dame. In addition, other structures of antiquity were mined: Les Invalides (which would've destroyed the French Army Museum, along with its art gallery & 400 year old barracks, as well as Napoleon's tomb), the Palais du Luxembourg, the Eiffel Tower, the Place de la Concorde & Hotel de Talleyrand, the Palais-Bourbon, along with many other historical structures. The bridges around Paris were mined, several of them having significant historical value. All this was in addition to the more militarily important targets like public utilities works & industrial complexes. Dominique Lapierre & Larry Collins co-authored "Is Paris Burning?" in the mid 1960s, a book which dealt with this exact matter. They interviewed many of the participants who were still living (German military officials, French Resistance fighters, other Europeans, & Americans) & presented a well researched & copiously annotated document. The mining of French buildings is a matter of historical record & is easily researched. Check it out.
      The only thing Christian about Hitler was his birth certificate. He was a virulent anti-christian & anti-semite, as were ALL his ministers. By 1935 he was persecuting Christians on an ever increasing scale: youth groups banned, Christian symbols (e.g. crucifixes, nativity plays, carols) banned from hospitals & schools, hundreds of priests & nuns brought up on bogus charges, Christian groups subjected to bullying & intimidation. It got worse before the outbreak of WWII & didn't fade during the war. And America's entry into the war had nothing at all to do with partisan religious politics. I suspect that you were trying to be sincere in your commentary, BTIsaac, but your sources of information are entirely wrong.

    • @webleypug
      @webleypug 5 лет назад

      @BTIsaac- Hitler did indeed want to appear acceptable to Christendom, & gave numerous indications of his support for it. German protestant pastor Martin Niemoller (who eventually wrote the famous poem that begins, "First they came for the Communists...") was an initial Hitler supporter. It didn't take him long to realize that the dictator was a charlatan & demagogue, & he called him on it. As a result, he ended up in concentration camps for the remainder of the war. Although there were some elements in the Catholic church which supported Hitler, Pope Pius XII's contempt for the man & Naziism is incontestable. Because the pontiff's flock included members who lived in both Axis & Allied spheres, he basically had to be seen as "sitting on the fence", which some have unfairly portrayed as tacit support for Hitler. A review of the pope's activities & speeches, prior to & during the war, reveal a man passionately opposed to Hitler. Regarding Notre Dame, if you're denying the irrefutable historical evidence over Hitler's intent to destroy it, this discussion doesn't have much more mileage. However, you're probably approaching the issue from a philosophical or moral stance, in which case, many would agree. Why unnecessarily destroy an object of beauty when there's no need for it? By 1943, the war was turning against the Axis powers. In August of '44, Hitler was of the mindset that he was gonna take as much & as many people down with him as possible (similar to Saddam Hussein's torching of his own oil wells in the Gulf War, when he realized that he was being defeated & his country invaded). Hitler's name would forever have been associated as a destroyer of culture, but he didn't care. Check your sources for membership in the Nazi SS. Being a Christian was NOT a prerequisite for entrance.(Most were doubtless Christian, simply as a matter of elimination - they had to prove that there was no Jewish lineage in their past). Members were encouraged to renounce Christianity, & the SS unashamedly adopted neo-pagan holidays & rituals e.g replacing Christmas, weddings, etc. with ceremonies based on associations with Norse paganism. American propagandists were correct in calling him a godless atheist. Yankee support for Hitler was not that widespread, although it grew prior to & shortly after the war's beginning. A lot of it stressed an isolationist stance i.e. keeping America out of Europe's wars.

      The interior was plundered and ransacked, and subsequently largely rebuilt, as was the spire, But the stonework and buttresses date to the 13th century, not just the towers. The interior was an amalgam of original and rebuilt parts. Most of the statuary was installed in the 1800s. Some parts are irreplaceable; the old growth forests from which the wood was harvested no longer exist.
