A glass roof will be amazing, but nothing can replace the history - the love - the awe of the centuries and the ghosts of those amazing people who imagined and built it.
Lets face it, it will be rebuild. The vault ceiling seems mostly OK. It's sad, but as long as the stonework is intact, the roof will be rebuild. Two other great cathedrals, Reims and Chartres, had their roof construction destroyed in fires. Both had them replaced in 2 decades.
@@RonjaStarCollector There is a vaulted ceiling under the roof, no light would come through. Still, I hope they just rebuild it. Maybe without the spire (the spire was a 19th century addition). It also seems that the collapsing spire was the only part of the roof collapse that actually took the vaulted ceiling down with it. Most cathedrals and churches that have had there roof burned, had the great forest of wood framing replaced with just a simple steel or cast iron construction (this is the case for both Reims and Chartres) It would be nice if this cathedral could keep such a nice (though hidden to most visitors) part of the architecture. So yeah, we have the plans, I hope they rebuild it the same.
Very sad to see 850 years of history and culture reduced to ruins in just over a few hours. However it will be rebuilt to its former glory and become a symbol of the human capacity for cultural recovery and renewal.
This is depressing to me a beautiful building structure that we lost, our ancestors will be disappointed to us for this to happen such beautiful building structure 😔
UNBELIEVABLE! This is not just a loss for Parisians; this is a loss for all of Christianity just days away from Easter as well as a loss for Western civilization itself.
I hope and pray that people especially Christians will see that God is greater than a structure and cannot be housed in a building shaped with hands and they can have a rich celebration of Jesus's resurrection without a building.
@@JetADR Of course Christians see that, Ari, but that does not negate the impact of losing such an historically and architecturally significant structure. It would be like losing the Statue of Liberty in New York City or the pyramids of Giza in Egypt. This is a huge loss. The ironic and symbolic significance is staggering! This is affront on the female manifestation of God. The timing of it and religious implications are truly heartbreaking and startling!
Find it odd that the French authorities have not mentioned what caused the fire. Typically the causes of fires are quickly deduced. I have worked on historic renovations over 10 years in various countries. I NEVER remember an instance when flammable materials where not carefully secured at all times. I wonder if there was not purposely set on fire by a non-Frenchman?

Keep in mind that when we speak and think about France, we think about art, culture, architecture, history, and literature... that's the reason why those people are quiet. They don't think about the religious part only, but about all those really important and fundamental things also which is logic.
The building has changed a lot throughout the years, there is a panel inside the cathedral with all the changes and restorations made to it. This is will be another chapter in its history, if it can be restored it will be restored.

Do you have an alibi???
Exploring such an amazing building in Assassin's Creed Unity was one of my favorite things to do in videogames, I was always so obsessed with learning French history. Sometimes I go back and replay that game just to see Notre Dame again, and to see the real thing attacked by engulfing flames just breaks my heart, the fact that such a timeless treasure for the entire world, most of all Paris, can go down that fast... it's surreal. My prayers go out to Paris.

Alhamdulillah. Well said.

Agreed. Difference though is that took 200 years to build and has way more quality, intricacy, and art into it than the copy paste houses and business buildings being built today.
Toasty Potate yeah I get what you’re saying,

Most cathedrals and churches that have had there roof burned, had the great forest of wood framing replaced with just a simple steel or cast iron construction (this is the case for both Reims and Chartres)
It would be nice if this cathedral could keep such a nice (though hidden to most visitors) part of the architecture.
So yeah, we have the plans, I hope they rebuild it the same.
Very sad to see 850 years of history and culture reduced to ruins in just over a few hours. However it will be rebuilt to its former glory and become a symbol of the human capacity for cultural recovery and renewal.
Frances culture was already being slowly destroyed before this. No go zones will take over the country.

UNBELIEVABLE! This is not just a loss for Parisians; this is a loss for all of Christianity just days away from Easter as well as a loss for Western civilization itself.
Loss for humanity
I hope and pray that people especially Christians will see that God is greater than a structure and cannot be housed in a building shaped with hands and they can have a rich celebration of Jesus's resurrection without a building.
@@JetADR To not be angry at this would be quite simply ridiculous. If anyone is caught culpable for this, then they need to be dealt with.
@@JetADR Of course Christians see that, Ari, but that does not negate the impact of losing such an historically and architecturally significant structure. It would be like losing the Statue of Liberty in New York City or the pyramids of Giza in Egypt. This is a huge loss. I hope you are capable of comprehending that because I have no time for dull religious zealots that are incapable of understanding that the loss of a structure that has stood for 800 years cannot be measured.

@Allison the fox I know, I was on a school trip when it happened, and my whole class were so shocked. I’ve always wanted to go there because of the Disney movie, and now I have to wait for a couple of years to see it.

850 years old, and it took 200 years to make. Which makes it 1,050 years old.
I never thought about that...Crazy
I think the 200 years of building was included in the 850. First stone was laid in the 1160s. But yes, a long time. With hand tools! Wow. so sad.

Exactly. I love this building and it's sad but it's just a building. More than a hundred people died in california fires in 2018. Cities burnt down completely. People lost their homes. It's a real tragedy.
rainforests are important and there are tones of people who who care, but this building has significant cultural value. How would you like it if someone destroyed something that you cared dearly about.

If it's ever restored or rebuilt it won't be 800 years old and its authenticity would be lost.
