As a Traditional Roman Catholic and Retired Fire Captain, SFFD, I want to thank my brave brothers and sisters, who fought this dangerous fire.. Grazie a tutti miei amici francesi e pompieri.
This was a loss for the entire world. I live in Texas, but I have been to Notre Dame twice, the last time in October of 2017 and when I heard that it was on fire I almost cried. I did cry the next day. Those who have never been to Notre Dame or any of the world's Gothic cathedrals probably would not understand, but each one is priceless and each one has a spirit and are a gift to us from all those who built them so long ago. Certainly the cathedrals are not necessary for any of us to live, but what kind of life would we be living if we did not have them or any of the other magnificent places or things that make our lives so much richer. Notre Dame was the very first thing that I ever saw the first time I was in Europe. It took my breath away and still does. It always will. This has been like losing my best friend.
During the whole fire, the bells of dozen of churches were ringing the sound of disaster across Paris, it was such an intense and heart wrenching experience for everyone of us.
The only loss that has occurred is my words and teachings leaving the hearts of men. Do not set for yourselves idols on Earth for man-made things come and go but only I am eternal. Let the dead be dead and focus more on the living. You fools would cry over made-made goods, but a brethren who is living, breathing and feels pain, in need of food, shelter, medical care or seeking refuge in your lands you shoo away as if they were pests. This is why I said the gates to hell a large and wide whilst the gates to heaven are extremely narrow. For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter heaven. On Judgement day, let your earthly idols come to your aide.
Come here and visit France. We have plenty of magnificient, old Cathedrals, Gothic style, of the same era. Each one is worth a visit, each one contains priceless art. Basically every city with 50,000 people or more in France (and Europe) has one just like that, unique in its own way.
Perhaps they can hire gifted artists to do original recreations of those paintings that were lost, there are scans available of everything. I was brought to tears seeing this happen. Sending love from NW USA-My heart is with all of you in Paris. ❤️
From an art and historical perspective I'm just so glad that not everything is completely gone. It's a shame that a lot of art is destroyed, but at least some of them are safe. I'm just happy that I could see it some day in the future.

do you know what's going on in France? What all mainstream media is avoiding is the fact that all the money raised is just a tax write-off for the rich while France endures it's 27th week (that's 6 months) of the yellow vest movement in which the french people are protesting austerity and economic inequality. Raising money to rebuild this structure just because it's 800+ years old is stoking the fire beneath the French people to continue with this movement. It's just sad that Mainstream media around the globe only push one agenda "omg we have to save an old building". We need to think about people, not things.
I was watching some video on youtube that day. Early in the morning in the Philippines. when I saw a channel live streaming how Notre Dame is slowly swallowed by fire. I'm not totally attached to it but I literally cried to saw such devastating incident. I can't imagined how sad for the locals to see their sanctuary for hundreds of years to be ruined by fire in some hours.
What we have lost is a great work of ART - That's what is valuable, and that's what's worth recreating. Anything else is a mislabeling and a distraction from the truth
@@spicecrop I'm literally a history major, specializing in WW2 Europe. So watch your words, Junior. If you weren't such a dick, I'd respectfully reiterate that, yes, as France could've done more to resist German forces, the Cathedral has withstood hundreds of years of hardships. But evidently, you are a massive dick. Geez some people are just so damn negative about everything.
@@DanielTesenair you may study history, but you know nothing of it. if you'd knew something about history, you would not say that this is a great quote. the nazi's were christian, so the cathedral was never in danger, even under nazi occupation. in fact, it would have been more safe under the nazi regime than under today's french government. i wold not be surprised if they would just slap a golden dome with a moon sign over Notre Dame, and convert it into a mosque.
@@itsMe_TheHerpes Be careful, I don't want you to cut yourself on all that edge. Nobody is saying the Nazi's targeted churches. But many historical European buildings were destroyed. All the quote is saying is that the church has survived much bigger events and hardships, and that it is not lost now. But, as a conservative, I do find some truth in your joke, haha.
@@DanielTesenair well, as a fellow conservative then, i think you would agree that a much better quote would be "it survived the atheist liberals and their bloody revolution"
My heart is so very. very heavy sad for France and it's people. I was blessed to see this man made wonder a few years ago. Thanks to the brave firemen.Song
As an atheist this is a great loss to the world, in history, art , beauty, engineering etc. I remember the time I toured the site with Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians ,forty six years ago. A place where the greatest artisans of the civilized world toiled for more then a century to make the finest object they could and certainly accomplished that. My heart is no less injured then the most pious of mankind. We all share something in this. Certainly one of the greatest creations of humans!
very well said - we don't often think of the significance of places like this until something like this happens and we are reminded of the magnificent history. Much love from Scotland
France has strong people & many people of the world are behind them with prayers & donations to support them. This is a treasure of the world. We will bond together to help build up this beautiful focal point. It will reflect the same faith that we have in God. Disasters happen, but Christ will also restore us again if we keep the faith.
A tourist trap burned, symbolic of the Self Destruction of the International Child Sex Abuse Church. Good riddance to bad rubbish. France is not a Catholic country any more. Long time separation of church and state because the Catholic Sex Abuse Church was and is so bad. the tourist trap will be rebuilt but Religion continues to fade away. Ow please. When it comes down to it, it's a building. Thoughts and prayers!?! Let's not be so dramatic. Yeah it's a pity but shit like this happens to buildings. Just be grateful no one died.
The tragedy that has occurred is truly devastating for the entirety of the world. It’s truly heartbreaking to me as a high school student who had just decided to save up thousands of dollars of my own money to attend my schools French trip every other year, to see such a monument I was looking forward to go up in smoke. I still plan on taking the trip next year, but it just won’t be the same as I thought it would be.
Gotta say though, that is one tough building to have survived that inferno! The saying “They don’t make them like they used to” definitely applies here! Also, it totally debunks the ‘fire causes steel structures to fail’ bollocks we were fed over 18 years ago, because the scaffolding didn’t collapse after being exposed to fire for 7 hours!!
There were large parts of the scaffolding that was not impinged by fire so that part would still be able to support the scaffolding that is taking the heat. The scaffolding was only supporting itself as well and not any part of the structure itself. When steel is exposed to fire, they weaken and expand as they get more heated and that weakening is what causes steel to fail. There is a very good video explaining why the towers fell because of their building construction. One of those main reasons were the steel trusses surrounding the concrete middle. To your fact of a tough building, agreed. Reason why using ordinary/heavy timber construction should be used over all the new lightweight materials used. Can withstand much more fire/heat. Here is the link ruclips.net/video/bGs-E1iIMyM/видео.html
The pointed arches inside the building protected the rest from the building to catch fire. Only the spire fell through the arched ceiling. It could have been far worse. If the spire fell on one of the flying butresses, then parts of the stone structure could have collapsed.
What do you do when the roof has had it, but you don't want to pay to fix it? Here was me thinking that when there's a fire you just get out, rather than remove all the valuable things.
@@StopMediaFakery Farfetched . They were beginning the renovation of the cathedral even without so much money . But a wooden dak structure is not that expensive . Expensive is to restore the old stone that is becoming so porous . That is the real challenge . And all thanks go to the firefighters and their commando to ensure a controlled fire .

I'm gutted for this amazing building and what it represents.... I was lucky enough to be one of the people to visit Notra Dame Cathedral back in Nov 2007 during a wonderful 10 day trip to Paris. And on the last night, found myself on a river boat overlooking the cathedral again asking my girlfriend to marry me. I've been married since 2009 and we've two beautiful children, it's a story I love to tell people but sadly won't have the same meaning until its restored back to it's original beauty. My heart is beating just as fast now as it did back on that November night back in 2007, although for very different reasons..... Money cannot be an option in restoring this historical landmark if its possible to do so... Irish fan🇮🇪
utterly, utterly sickening to watch. From an architectural and historical point of view it's a catastrophe. I feel so heavy in heart this has happened. Not just for France but for all of us everywhere. Repairs will be done and parts can be replaced but it won't ever be the same again. So sad
This is simply a reminder that all life matters and things like this can easily bring people together not just in religion but from ALL walks of life, nothing nor anyone is invincible, only God.
Even when rebuilt, it’ll never be the same. The most charming thing about things like this, apart from the age, is the knowledge of how much work went into it. We’ll rebuild it. 200 years of work will be rebuilt in a few years with ease. The charm will be largely gone
What? The facade is still there. Its been built and renovated numerous times. It is the opposite. It will strengthen the mystique, allure and history of the cathedral tenfold.
I'm not religious but I can't help but feel sad at the loss of such a beautiful building and important piece of culture. Have hope, France. She will be rebuilt.
Artist Interviewee: "We will find wood in the forests." I hope they have the sense to rebuild the roof trusses in steel preventing further fire and maintenence problems. The metal trusses won't be seen since they are above the vaulted ceiling and under the roof. The cathedral shouldn't be returned to its unsafe state threatening people, historical artifacts and firemen in order to fulfill a "return it to exactly as it was." Do it right.
Lewis Doherty agreed. They should rebuild using fire-proofed steel trusses with fire prevention, detection, and suppression systems you find in any large assembly space.
@@peterkowalcheck8465 : Oh believe this, the cathedral is not going to be the same ever again. There is nobody on earth capable of the artistic skills put into the cathedral. It's going into the 21st centry style repairs. It won't be so lucky if this tragedy strikes again.
You have to admit, wooden trees holding up a roof for 850 years did a remarkable job. Now new technology needs to take it's place... This way another 1,000 years can worship and marvel in it's beauty...
Personally, the documents and written thoughts of forebears is the greatest loss. Am glad no one was seriously injured... physically. EDit: yeah... forgot. A shout-out to the fire-fighters!
As sad as this is this will become part of the cathedral’s history. France will rebuild, although obviously some things are now gone for good. Shout out to those firefighters and love from Ohio.

Yet some ignorants want to tear down this building because “we should spend money on hospital and welfare for the poor instead” I don’t care if you are a Christian, a Muslim, a Buddhist or even an Atheist. This building is a valuable piece in humanity’s history, so it should be preserved. We have already lost a lot of valuable buildings like Library of Alexandria or Baghdad House of wisdom, and we should do our best protecting these heritages.
i agree .. but unfortunately - a large part of it has burned down - so if someone thinks that it needs rebuilding - they should rely on the crazy amount of money that the vatican already has or on enthusiastic billionaires..

And this was a great commercial for France and for Notre Dame. Just wait o be rebuild and see how millions flooding the gates to get in. Respect from Romania. Sorry for the loss. The king is dead, long live the king!
It's bad enough that the fire itself took place, can't imagine the loss it would have been for those priceless artifacts to have been lost as well. Thankfully, the fire didn't do as much of a toll as it might have, I hope the recovery operations go well, Paris.

I'm not a religious person but I have always been amazed by the architectural and engineering feats required to build these massive buildings that have withstood the tests of time for centuries. We owe our modern architectural and structural engineering knowledge, that allows us to build skyscrapers hundreds of metres tall, to those with the ingenuity and devotion to reach to the sky.
Thank you for such a great and informative covering of this! This is the 5th video I have watched to get the proper coverage I knew I could count on BBC 🌹🌹🌹 Truly heartbreaking but we will rebuild and thank God not everything was lost! #Priceless
Apart from Disney's movie, had never heard of Notre Dame, but when I saw it yesterday in the news getting burnt, it was like watching some living being getting burnt. Felt emotional alluva sudden. And I don't even know why. Love from India
I’m kind of shocked that they hadn’t already removed much of the original art and replaced them with replicas just for this very reason. Older buildings are not made to withstand fires, earthquakes, or any sizable disaster. At least they were able to save as much as they did.
Christ church is not only a building, it is the work of the Holy Spirit, that is capable to change hearts and minds. I am sure that not only Notre Dame will rise again, but Christ church in France and all over the world will rise again 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Im sad just like what happened in our church in Cebu City Philippines 🇵🇭. The Basilica Minore del Santo Niño is one of the most oldest church in The Philippines! We’re the Senyor Santo Niño holy child from Spain come to The Philippines and blessed our country! Last 2013 when a high magnitude earthquake destroyed the precious original bell tower of the church we’re the old centuries bells and old stones from the bell tower stumbled to ground and minced into pieces. My heart collapsed when saw it in the news and see the bell tower in bad shape, its like our country entire history is wipe out! But i always pray and pray that God is with us no matter what and he will not abandoned us in times like this. And I believe that God will always guide my countrymen to rebuild the damaged that has been done to the bell tower. After a year of restoration and precise engineering we rebuilt again the same structure of our historic Basilica bell tower! To Notre Dame Cathedral God is with you! France will rise again Viva France!! Love from The Philippines 🇵🇭 🇫🇷
I think this fire woke up a lot of people, when I watch the cross glowing through the Dust, I thought of Joan of Arc when she said let the cross hang High, in the history, of that beautiful cathedral, even people I know that are not religious felt very badly, and as a Catholic and all the things our church has been going through here in the US, there's good and bad in everything even religion, maybe God is sending the message, and if you don't believe in God that's okay too it takes something bad to happen sometimes to bring people together, like what happened on 9/11, the world came together for us in the US, God bless France,!!!
Such beautiful Gothic art and innovative architecture, it took hundreds of years... 11th and the 12th century. How intelligent and artistic the people of that time were in the aspect of building
@Your Favorite Friend Sure, such a great time when workers would die by the hundreds. I wish you had been of the men toiling on that building, that might have taught you a thing or two (if you'd survived, that is)
Have you nor seen the Pantheon? That was built nearly 1,900 years ago and has been in continuous use ever since. The Santa Sophia is nearly 1,500 years old, the Castel Sant'Angelo 1,800 etc.
I have the money to go visit Paris with my husband but dont have the health to travel so long... My wish is to visit Europe and see all these great cathedrals and museums before i die!
Thanks for providing great coverage of this tragic event. Time will tell what structural repairs need to be done to the existing structure before rebuilding can begin. My guess is that moving forward, some modern technology under the skin will be used (such as large glu-lam engineered beams) in lieu of trying to find old-growth oak beams. And the lead roofing is probably a complete non-starter, given modern health and safety issues. Which brings up a question I have not seen addressed by any news coverage - as the roofing was lead sheets over the timber frame, and it was burnt and released into the air, has there been any air quality and ground monitoring for lead contamination around the structure? All of that lead went up in the air, and was mixed in the smoke and soot during the fire; and what didn't go up, is now mixed in the water inside the structure. If the EU has safety regulations like the US, it will definitely complicate decontamination, remediation and clean-up efforts.
Lead does not aerosolize well from solid metal and due its low melting point it will have run away from the primary sources of heat quickly. If it were to become a gas on a large scale it would have needed to reach its boiling point but thats 3180F or 1749C and no wood fire can get that hot
The Paris Fire Brigade had trained hard for if a fire broke out at Notre Dame, and they did a helluva job saving the 850+ years old cathedral from total destruction. That one resident's comment is right. If Notre Dame could survive WWII when Paris was occupied by the Wehrmacht and the Nazis, it can survive this inferno.
This was really sad, It reminds me of the 1949 Earthquake that destroyed our own cathedral but it was rebuilt for 3 Years (i think) I hope the notre dame would be rebuilt in less than 5 Years God bless those who saved the artifacts and the cathedral
I am a believing and practicing Muslim from Sri Lanka. Many years ago back in the school days, my teacher whether or not it was in the syllabus, not only taught about Notre Dame Cathedral but it was extensive enough I guess to build a love and respect in my heart for this monument naturally. Even today so, that I recently bought and wore a T shirt with its name printed on it. My heart burns when the simple livelihood, happiness, a cardboard house or any belonging of value of a person becomes subject to destruction. Be it a piece of paper someone has worked upon, let alone something magnificent like this! We don't normally fail to discover the human involvement to the cause of a situation, almost totally ignoring the fact that God is involved in everything either as punishment or for something good to come later on. It is as if God is there for us only to worship Him, and He personally affects us not. God to a Muslim is a Supreme Living Being (like none other), The Creator, Owner and the Eternal Ruler of all of the universe, multiverse or all and any existence ever.
You really need to take a good, hard look at what islam truly teaches. Everywhere islam goes, the land & people become a desert that only produce thorns. Eternal salvation isn't assured in islam. Not even allah & muhammad were sure.
Hope the best for people as a skeptic to religion I still have respect for the symbolism and the love put into things like this even if I have no religious beliefs. As my grandfather once said (( It's not about the physical objects them-self but the knowledge and power of the things we build to keep humans pushing forward from the past )) [ Having investment for the future and do daunting on the past so we can move forward ] He visited this place in the 1940s while fleeing Holland during the american/allies push into west Europe.
@@god1949 if you're so religious isnt it heretical to take the name of "god"? The entire book of fairy tales you believe in makes "god" look extremely fickle.
When I am connected with something precious, which I deeply love and touch my heart, I take care and respect it very much. Accidents / disasters do not "happen", they are caused by people's stupidity or "goddamn sloppiness." Recognizing in time is just as important as grieving after. It's easier to do something right than to explain later why you did it wrong or why you were not careful. Question: How should one deal with people who do not really make an effort in important matters?
Although I agree that carelessness can create a disaster of this kind, it is unfortunately not always necessary. When restoration work is being conducted on centuries-old (and very dry) wooden roofing, all is needed to start a fire is an electrical short. It had been the case for example when the ancient Town Hall of La Rochelle burned: a short in an electrical panel had set fire to an archive room, and the fire had then spread to the roof.
Just listened this morning, 17 April, to an infuriating BBC interview with an archbishop the slant of which was, should we spend money restoring Notre Dame, after all, ‘You don’t need a magnificent building in which to worship God.’ The archbishop was badgered on every point... ! I hope the building is restored to its former glory, for Christians and for all others who have an appreciation of the value of such jewels in our culture.
I'm a French atheist, I don't care about the likes of bishops and priests, they can all bugger off as far as I'm concerned, but I do care about history and culture, and I hope that we can restore Notre-Dame to its former glory so that future generations also get to marvel at the ingenuity of the medieval people who were able to build such a monument without the modern technologies and materials. It's never gonna be exactly the same unfortunately, but let's hope we get as close as possible
The day we stop carring about our culture our western civilizations will collaps - to see how a catastrophe like this affects not only France but all of Europe brings hope..
Why couldn't they install fire fighting equipment there permanently.so they could have respond to the fire immediately.i loved this place since the day i read "hunchback of notre dam".i feel so sad and so emotional.this great monument should be brought back to its previous glory at any cost.
Nilupul Vijaya you are right. Dry risers would have enabled water to have been pumped up into the roof. There is a river immediately beside the structure after all.

Good point about steel not weakening...9/11 needs the truth....planned demo and pulse technology were used.
The pointed arches inside the building protected the rest from the building to catch fire. Only the spire fell through the arched ceiling. It could have been far worse. If the spire fell on one of the flying butresses, then parts of the stone structure could have collapsed.

such a shame ...it needed repairs long time back and now when it is broken to the ground they have opened their eyes
Tragic?
Lead does not aerosolize well from solid metal and due its low melting point it will have run away from the primary sources of heat quickly. If it were to become a gas on a large scale it would have needed to reach its boiling point but thats 3180F or 1749C and no wood fire can get that hot
rebuild it make it grand again
The Paris Fire Brigade had trained hard for if a fire broke out at Notre Dame, and they did a helluva job saving the 850+ years old cathedral from total destruction.

Hi there: You thought it 😏.
Please restore it as soon as possible.
