It's funny coming back to this after playing the new version. One thing I find interesting is the change in tone and roles of the narrator. Here in the original mod he feels like an antagonistic entity that punishes you whenever you stray from the path he intended. In the newer version(s), although he remains highly antagonistic in some of the endings, other paths will make him rather sympathetic to the player or just be as baffled as Stanley at what happens around them.
I guess it's spelled out in the "Real Person" ending that just having someone to listen to him is enough. Having an uncooperative audience is annoying, but having no one is depressing for a narrator.

In The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, it's possible to get to this old map by falling into one of the goals of the Rocket League map and then falling down again. Its in the 2013 release too, when you fall through the elevator in Portal. Which i guess makes the entire mod the canon ending to the blue door route, at least as far as canon goes in TSP
One thing I always love about the Stanley parable is the way it introduces the whole concept. You walk up to two doors, and the narrator tells you to enter the left one, despite it being very easy to walk through the other. It instantly introduces the idea of choices in the game in a way that the player can very quickly pick up on. There's no tutorial introducing it, or pop up saying there are branching paths. The game simply presents an option, and says to take one, despite the other being very easy to take. And human curiosity will, eventually, win and make the player explore the other paths. Even in 2011, it's an incredibly easy, simple, and most importantly, effective way to introduce the game's concept.

I've been playing the ultra deluxe version recently. Seeing the original map of the game has made me realize that one of the lines in the ultra deluxe (or maybe 2013 version, I'm not certain) version is a lot cooler than I thought it was. Spoilers beyond this point, I guess. In the final ending shown here, we see how the game would play out without the narrator present. Of course, the narrator is still there, he just doesn't say anything. In the ultra deluxe edition, the narrator loads up other games, rather than other maps, with the final one being rocket League. After entering the rocket League stadium, you have the option to jump into a hole underneath the goal post. After jumping down into this hole, you find yourself in an area clearly abandoned, half constructed and gathering dust. Upon entering this area, the narrator proclaims, although faintly, that he cannot follow you into that area. You can then fall further, upon which point you find yourself in the map from the original mod, albeit dilapidated and with failing power. The area you fall into is the door leading to the room with two doors, but it's closed so you are unable to enter it. You backtrack to room 427, and the screen cuts to black, before the narrator wonders what Stanley discovered in this location. Based off the reaction of the narrator, it makes sense that the map would be the same one as the original game, since he couldn't interact with that area, so it wouldn't be updated for the new game. Pretty neat. Also, hearing Radiohead at the end of this was mind-boggling for me
I belive that the radiohead bit caried over to the full game because the song heard in zending is quite a bit similar to the radiohead song treefingers.
This is a good mod, Its the kind of mod that makes you scared, Without scaring you. You have no control, The hint of the narrator addressing you just slightly, The times he broke the 4th wall, It just makes you nervous and scared. I wish it was longer.
at best this was the mod before making it complete, based on that mod, that's why it's so different from this mod along with the full game, that respective changes were made, making the whole game no longer look like this mod .
Its so cool to see all the comments from 11 years ago compared to the newer comments It makes me wonder, what do the people that made the older comments think now?
It’s crazy to see how far this game has come, and also how many voice lines 2 years before the game being released on steam, have stayed 11 years later in 2022 in ultra deluxe
31:10 I’m a Radiohead fan, and legitimately watched the entire video because the Wikipedia page said the song “Everything In It’s Right Place” would be in it. I thought it wasn’t true since there was only 10 seconds left of the video, but man was that 31 minutes worth it.
Oh wow. I had NO IDEA this was a Half-Life 2 mod. I just finished the... er, "Ultra Deluxe" edition, having snatched it up as soon as it was available because of how much I loved the original. If you liked the original game, GET THE ULTRA DELUXE. I can't even tell you why, but please do. I promise you that, even if you already own the original, the Ultra Deluxe edition is VERY worth buying. (Whew... I think I managed to get through that without any spoilers but... holy hell it's hard with this game lol)
Wow. This is insane. The overall basic structure is there, even a lot of the narration. I'm frankly shocked at how well-fleshed out this (obviously very early) version of this story is. The later versions of the game really just built on this already very solid foundation... And that's how great video games get made. Lock in your core concept as early as possible, and then iterate on it. Really great design philosophy on display here (in addition to the great writing superb narration lol).
Just makes me annoyed than gaben still has his head up his own ass about releasing half life games on only xbox and will possibly never port both (yes i still like half life 1) games to the switch out of ego and not system capabilities.
I actually disagree, I think it’s really difficult to spoil things because the Stanley parable does not follow the format of a traditional plot. “Spoilers” are called that because they “spoil” the experience. But talking about a bucket, or a memory zone, or a skip button is not really going to cheapen anybody’s experience
@@trentnunyabiz6204 Well, I can't help you out with the switch. But you should get the Black Mesa fan remake of Half-Life if you're interested in playing it on PC.

Never seen anything quite like this. This deserves an award... or a few awards for such a compelling and immersive storytelling. Not many videogames can catch your attention and immerse you into its world, make you feel part of it, let alone a mod. This is very interesting and intriguing. I am, at most, inspired by this mod/story.
Boyyyy- the Narrator sounds more serious and even a bit villainous in the original mod... As someone who enjoys listening to both, I hope his dialogues from TSP: UD would have the right combination of darkness between this mod and the 2013 version.
Mindfuckery of the highest order :) This is why having modable games and an active community is so important - to get fresh new takes and twists to a genre we might immagine was all worn out of new ideas. I can't help but to enjoy this immensely, so thank you to the author :) PS: Narratorman has brilliant voice :)
And "Stanley decided to go to the meeting room. He needed help and guidance from his peers, so the idea of total solitude scared him." That was an alternative line for Stanley thinking he missed a memo.
such a fascinating version. kind of looks janky and unpolished compared to the 2013 & ultra deluxe versions but the ideas and base concepts are all here. it's had an incredibly strong concept from the start and im glad the team was able to take it as far as they did. it's so unique as a game and that's why it's easily one of my favourites, and this is an interesting bit of history to show how all of that began.
Genius! Great way of using narration and gameplay together to give us a unique and fun experience. (favourite quote "...and why can't I see my feet when I look down?")
After having his own game for once, Stanley decided to watch the moment where he still don't have his own game. Seeing the video turn into either a replay button or a playback button, Stanley decided to check out the comment section. Perhaps he might find someone reacting to it. Coming upon the comment section itself, Stanley found nothing but an argument so old, they aren't replies that look like what it is nowadays. Stanley, not caring whatever the hell it was even all about, shared the situation on Shadbase. Perhaps someone would punish these aggressive people by making NSFW out of them. Right after posting, the break is over, so Stanley went back to his room, pushing buttons again. Alone. Forever.
I don't know, the other version emphasizes more on the fact that she's trapped in her own "game" (her life), furthering the point of the story about freedom.
@Chancer4ever Thanks man, the kind words mean a heck of a lot! I'm really glad you feel that way, the more content in this world that inspires and challenges people the better!
Really happy that this video came out after I went through the game. I like the creator's idea of not having any media that can give away the storyline on the MODDB page.
"Go ahead, play with those controls all you like. The real controls are where I'm sitting." Though it's not canon beyond this mod, that line does add some nice insight to the HD Remix and Ultra Deluxe.
Y'know, watching this, it's kind of interesting that I feel like the narrator is a lot less hostile in most paths in the later versions (and even *friendly* in many of the Ultra Deluxe ones). But here, the narrator just seems to be a real jerk.
10 years on and the uploader is still replying to some comments. The new game has revived this video. It's cool to see an early developed game using many half-life assets.
This first iteration of the Narrator comes off a lot less lighthearted and animated than the final versions. Not that I don't love the final version, but this version is a lot more...serious, somber, even sinister. Like a legitimate, mortal enemy who genuinely hates Stanley and gets off on controlling his fate over and over again.
Hearing audios from different endings in different places is so weird to me. Hearing the dialogue from the broom closet in the ending where he takes Stanley to a different game is so weird.
It's cool to know where The Stanley Parable came from! Every time I hear a line from the 2013 game in the original mod, it sends shivers down my spine! (Like 30:13, in the confusion ending) I absolutely love the Narrator in the 2013 game, but here I find his voice a bit annoying. But hey, I still love him!
Damn watching this after the newest version of the game came out is such a bizarre experience from the darker themes and the hl2 assets even down to the music.
When I first entered this area in the other games ending I was so creeped out, I had no idea it was from the original concept! It's interesting to see how the game changed in just those few years between this and the release. The insanity ending feels much more brutal in this version, and I wish the 2013 and ultra deluxe version had an actual escape ending, like here (though if Stanley enters this version in the other games endings, he might stumble upon the escape sooner or later). I also love the little things that got referenced, like the nightsharks, and how some things were reused in a different concept, like the narrator's famous drugs and hookers line.
Even though I was very young when it came out I vaguely remember the set up, the ways. absolutely everything to it, Maybe I watched it before and its just there. I dont know, but I'm glad I grew up with THIS game too
are you kidding me this is amazing! When it comes to exploring how we tell stories through games and how choice and narration work this is groundbreaking, games are more then COD and mario, to many of us true videogamers they can be a form of artistic expression another medium much like film or literature. This mod is fantastic
This is extremely creepy. Its about a guy, who doesn't realize hes in a source game, a slave to the designer of the map, even in the first ending when it says hes free, he really isn't. Also, in the part where you activate the generator, is it possible to stop the timer?
It's a hl2 mod/a game before a game, but I don't know where the timer appears, but I saw comments saying "no, it's not possible, unless you mod a mod/hack the game"

Storytelling at its finest, gentlemen. We need more games like this. and Portal.

Also, hearing Radiohead at the end of this was mind-boggling for me
wait they’re the same maps?? i just got that ending yesterday i need to replay it to see but thats so cool
I belive that the radiohead bit caried over to the full game because the song heard in zending is quite a bit similar to the radiohead song treefingers.
I love that the newer versions at one point place you in an extremely dark version of the office from this version.
This is a good mod, Its the kind of mod that makes you scared, Without scaring you. You have no control, The hint of the narrator addressing you just slightly, The times he broke the 4th wall, It just makes you nervous and scared. I wish it was longer.
"I wish it was longer"
I have good news man
Well guess what buddy

That's how RUclips works.
This was the original Half Life 2 mod, before the Stanley Parable game came out
at best this was the mod before making it complete, based on that mod, that's why it's so different from this mod along with the full game, that respective changes were made, making the whole game no longer look like this mod .
"Until the moment I say 'Happily ever a--' BOOM!"
That scared the FUCK out of me!
I played it yesterday/the day before and it terrified me xd
I love how closely you animate each scene, so nice.
Okay, I know this was eleven years ago but...
What????????????????????????????
Its so cool to see all the comments from 11 years ago compared to the newer comments
It makes me wonder, what do the people that made the older comments think now?
It’s crazy to see how far this game has come, and also how many voice lines 2 years before the game being released on steam, have stayed 11 years later in 2022 in ultra deluxe
This game is a hell of a lot darker than the Stanley Parable we have today
This mod broke the 4th wall, pulverized its remains, made bricks out of them and then proceeded to build a Stanley.

I’m a Radiohead fan, and legitimately watched the entire video because the Wikipedia page said the song “Everything In It’s Right Place” would be in it.
I thought it wasn’t true since there was only 10 seconds left of the video, but man was that 31 minutes worth it.
it's cool to realise this office building is in the actual game
Why did it take me this long to realize that this is the office in the ending where you escape out of the game after letting the baby die and etc. lol
Wait, i just realized that the office in the "other game" ending is THIS original office!
Yes
It is honestly amazing to see how the story components developed into different endings.
From start to end, people loved this game. In each form.
What an amazing transformation. 👏
@@PurgPurg Well, sure, I suppose I can agree with that. But there is a very specific spoiler surrounding the quote unquote wink wink nudge nudge "Ultra Deluxe" edition that I really didn't wanna give away.

Ah yes the nice, silky, occasional purr every time The Narrator said "Stanley."
So....
How do you feel knowing you had just predicted the future
Boyyyy- the Narrator sounds more serious and even a bit villainous in the original mod... As someone who enjoys listening to both, I hope his dialogues from TSP: UD would have the right combination of darkness between this mod and the 2013 version.
It's out so thoughts?
Mindfuckery of the highest order :)
This is why having modable games and an active community is so important - to get fresh new takes and twists to a genre we might immagine was all worn out of new ideas. I can't help but to enjoy this immensely, so thank you to the author :)
PS: Narratorman has brilliant voice :)
I lost it when the narrator gave Stanley the correct code. Bloody brilliant!
10 years later and the code changed and the fandom is chaotic, love it though
Eh, no buckets. It's fine I guess.

3:28 I Like that fact they also added this voice clip in the actual game when it came out.
And "Stanley decided to go to the meeting room. He needed help and guidance from his peers, so the idea of total solitude scared him." That was an alternative line for Stanley thinking he missed a memo.
The oldest of all Parables with a Charmingly Annoying Narrator.

such a fascinating version. kind of looks janky and unpolished compared to the 2013 & ultra deluxe versions but the ideas and base concepts are all here. it's had an incredibly strong concept from the start and im glad the team was able to take it as far as they did. it's so unique as a game and that's why it's easily one of my favourites, and this is an interesting bit of history to show how all of that began.
Genius! Great way of using narration and gameplay together to give us a unique and fun experience.
(favourite quote "...and why can't I see my feet when I look down?")
So this version focused a lot more on the darker ideas and less on humorous reactions of the narrator
Stanley Parable 2011: Im doney with the funny
@@andreavoigtlander1087 Lol!
Alone. Forever.

Gosh the nostalgia this brings back. The sounds, the assets, the feel. I really miss those HL2 days, such nostalgia.
15:41 might just be me but i liked this writing for Mariella more than whatever we have in the current remake version
I don't know, the other version emphasizes more on the fact that she's trapped in her own "game" (her life), furthering the point of the story about freedom.
If only she had a bucket, she wouldn’t need to worry about such things

Can't wait for ultra deluxe hope you countine to make games after it.
Really happy that this video came out after I went through the game. I like the creator's idea of not having any media that can give away the storyline on the MODDB page.
I love how it started out as a half life 2 mod and in 2013 it got turned into a whole game no half life 2 needed
"Go ahead, play with those controls all you like. The real controls are where I'm sitting."
Though it's not canon beyond this mod, that line does add some nice insight to the HD Remix and Ultra Deluxe.
28:44 "Stanny"
Y'know, watching this, it's kind of interesting that I feel like the narrator is a lot less hostile in most paths in the later versions (and even *friendly* in many of the Ultra Deluxe ones). But here, the narrator just seems to be a real jerk.
It’s cool how the red and blue doors are original
Mariella: **going to work as usual**
Stanley: **Family Guy death pose**
10 years on and the uploader is still replying to some comments. The new game has revived this video. It's cool to see an early developed game using many half-life assets.
It is interesting how before the 2013 release it purely was hl-2 assets
This first iteration of the Narrator comes off a lot less lighthearted and animated than the final versions. Not that I don't love the final version, but this version is a lot more...serious, somber, even sinister. Like a legitimate, mortal enemy who genuinely hates Stanley and gets off on controlling his fate over and over again.
Good to know I can come back to this and know I'm not losing my goddamn mind when I keep wondering why I'm remembering the game looking different
The narrator is an extremely talented voice actor
The old music is really creepy, even creepier than the 2013 version.
(Like 30:13, in the confusion ending)
I absolutely love the Narrator in the 2013 game, but here I find his voice a bit annoying. But hey, I still love him!
Would you kindly enter that door on the left?
The Half Life 2 mod that changed everything. What a beginning, and what a variety of endings that only start again.
I dont know, but I'm glad I grew up with THIS game too
I remember playing this when it came out. Was always amazed at how big it grew!

Amazing 2012 comment
This is extremely creepy. Its about a guy, who doesn't realize hes in a source game, a slave to the designer of the map, even in the first ending when it says hes free, he really isn't. Also, in the part where you activate the generator, is it possible to stop the timer?
It's a hl2 mod/a game before a game, but I don't know where the timer appears, but I saw comments saying "no, it's not possible, unless you mod a mod/hack the game"
