    I was so surprised when I saw that Gaming Historian video a while back that Stephen Rozner singlehandedly developed both DOS MM1 and MM3, but then (if I'm remembering correctly) was also involved in DOS Mega Man X, an infinitely more polished game. Other than the omission of the ride armors and (I believe) the hadoken, I'm pretty sure there wasn't too much different between the DOS and SNES releases. Nothing else that stands out, anyway.
    Didn't realize there was a Mega Man X3 for DOS, though. Must've had my SNES by that point, because I would've been verrrrrry interested in that had I known...

    Great analysis! I didn't have an NES growing up as a kid, but was still able to play Mega Man 2 on the NES at my cousins' house and Mega Man 3 at a friend's house. I fell in love with those NES games and wished I could play them!
    One Christmas, my parents randomly surprised me with _Mega Man 3 (DOS)_ and I was initially excited when I saw the same box art as the NES version. I mistakenly thought the DOS version was a direct port of the NES classic. Boy, was I miserable when I finally booted it up. I was starved for games as a kid and tried to enjoy it, but even I knew I was fooling myself into liking it. It is probably in my Top 25 worst games I have played in my life...and I have played many games! 😅

    They are actually pretty impressive considering that DOS based computers were very limited in terms of gaming capabilities at the time. To add some perspective, back in the day I played this on my AT&T PC 6300 computer in CGA graphics. It was a good game considering what it was running on. This was an 8086 with 640K of RAM and it ran well. The background issues don't really happen on a CRT. Back then I knew it wasn't great compared to the Mega Man games I was playing on my NES, but it was cheap and it was something I could do on my computer back then.

    • @GottaBeFrank
      @GottaBeFrank  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, that's the case with all of the older Mega Man games. CRT's just make them look great. If I really wanted to play these games again, I would look for a composite filter for dosbox. Maybe see an approximation of what I was meant to see.

    • @tigheklory
      @tigheklory 8 месяцев назад

      @@GottaBeFrank I don't know if a composite filter would really smooth out the animation so much, it's more about the refresh rate and the persistence of the phosphorus. I totally see that issue that you are having in your capture, I don't remember that at all back in the day.

    • @GottaBeFrank
      @GottaBeFrank  8 месяцев назад

    My introduction to the Mega Man series was actually on my cousins' computer, Mega Man II for PC. In some ways, I liked it a little better than the NES titles, because the DOS version had a big variety of enemies that took quite a few hits sometimes; using robot master weapons against them was practically encouraged, because once you found that (for example) the yellow-suited humanoid enemies went down in one hit with Oil Man's weapon, the game got easier.

    Megaman X6 sucks so much worse than X7. X7 was at least an attempt at something new that just didn’t stick the landing. It’s still playable, and can be fun if you go in with zilch expectations. X6 is a fucking mess that’s broken, appallingly designed, extremely frustrating that, worst of all, completely messes up a tried and true formula.

      X7 wasn't even an attempt, the new team LITERALLY didn't knew how to do the older formula, Capcom knew of this before you ask

    Ladies and gentlemen, here is a perfect example of a bad video :
    - clickbait title, by putting in caps words, and in top of that the one that will provoke ;
    - putting down something without knowing the background of the game, watch Gaming Historian would have helped a ton ;
    - not appreciate a video game for what it is, depending on the hardware, era, background, and what it offers.
    Easy to make something like crap when it doesn't appeal to someone isn't it ? The way of being wise and becoming a real player is ahead now. "You have the power in you... but you're not a jedi yet."

      Did you even watch the video or was the title enough to warrant this comment?
      I mentioned the Gaming Historian's video, recommended viewers to watch that video, and gave credit where it was due when I found something worth giving credit for.
      I don't use the word cringe unironically, but that's all I can say to describe your jedi quote. Maybe a Star Wars fan will not think much of it, but oh well.

      @@GottaBeFrank Well then, next time you'll think twice about your video title, to not fall directly into the bad category. There is so much crap today like I described, that I naturally didn't watch your video at all, I don't have more time and energy to waste for such risk ; it's natural, and things happen this way for anything and anyone. And seeing how you use words, it wants to be pro, when it's actually intoxicated by teenagers "humor" of these days, viciously containing lack of experience and selfishness, and desesperately try to be noticed in the world of Internet. You'll see better by yourself.

      Most commercial DOS games from 1990 onwards actually do have sound card support and music. Remember that the DOS Mega Man games were literally made by one guy and are not typical of full price releases from the era.
