Sega was never given the large number of Mega Man titles as their rival, Nintendo. In 1995, American owners of their handheld, the Game Gear, were given the blue bomber in this interesting release. Was it never released elsewhere because it's a bad game, or was it a hidden gem all along? Let's find out.

Having played a large chunk of the game gear library i can tell you for free, its not that the game gear has no good games... its just that most of the better ones are always made by the same groups, which is kinda funny.
You can tell when a Game gear game has effort when they take into account the game's limited visibility designing stages and obstacles

It's a common misconception actually that the "U.S" in "U.S Gold" stands for "United States"; it originally stood for "Ultra Sexy" but they eventually changed it to "Unimaginably Shiny" to be more family friendly. ~Unimaginably Shiny Gold~

I never see this one get talked about, so I kind of avoided it thinking it was forbidden for a reason. A distrust of U. S. Gold is to thank for that. But - it turns out that the only reason that it isn't talked about isn't because it's bad, but because it's so uncharacteristic that it leaves nothing to talk about. And if you're a Game Gear game, you're most likely going to get buried by time. Huh! The more you know.

  • @gwgux

Interesting. I reckon it's the closest we'll ever get to what Mega Man would have looked like if it was released for the Sega Master System alongside the NES or in place of it. If the NES could use more colors at once, I would imagine that's what it would've looked like.

I have this. Haven't played it in ages, so take my recollections with that in mind, but I remember encountering a bug where I went from Hard mode to Normal mode in the same playthrough and had to start over; I think it either gave me a bad password or I messed up entering it. I also remember there being a blurring effect on the actual hardware when moving, but I know I beat it on Hard, so it couldn't have been that detrimental.

    • @GottaBeFrank

This was one of the final games I played when I set out to play every Mega Man platformer. I had played MMV (GB) previously, so I played the gameboy games I-IV, with this one tacked on at the end. It fits really well in that spot, as it keeps the same design philosophy as the gameboy titles. It's Mega Man, so it's automatically good. However, it's not one to go out of your way for.

  • @Dark_Jaguar
    @Dark_Jaguar 10 месяцев назад

Rock was always the better name for his "helper" identity anyway. "Mega and Roll" doesn't have a bit of flow, and someone named "Mega" deciding his superhero name is going to be "Megaman" would be like a mild mannered reporter deciding to go by the name "Clark Man".

I'd say it's better than the first two Mega Man's on Game Boy, but the latter games on the system definitely has it beat, as does all the NES games besides maybe MM1. U.S Gold is associated with making nothing good, Strider II, the one on home computers and Sega consoles, not the arcade and PS1 game, as well as Street Fighter II's computer ports, are prime examples of that, but Mega Man on Game Gear is rather component all things considered. A shame it didn't get a Master System port to mitigate the screen crunch issues. Honestly, my favorite thing about the game is the sprite work. Yeah, it's all ripped from the NES games, but the extra color really makes a difference.

I personally don't like this game mainly because it's just copy and paste level design now with screen crunch and no continues. I mainly prefer the GameBoy Megans, especially World 5 since that's my fave, due to them having more original level design that is made with the GameBoy's screen size in mind. I admire the attempt to port Megan to GameGear but it's not a title I think Megan fans need to play.

Good review! I actually did own a copy of this one when I was a kid and I loved it. There were no real gaming handhelds back then besides the GameBoy and Game Gear, so, yeah, portable Mega Man was quite the novelty at one point. This definitely plays similar to the Game Boy Mega Man games, screen crunch and all.
I agree this game does have some really weird design elements. Having Toad Man, Wave Man and Quick Man's stages appear in the final leg of the game instead of true Wily Stages was very confusing. It is still fun to play as a curiosity now, but you probably will have more fun just playing through Mega Man 4 and 5 on the NES instead.

Currently, "Rock" is Mega Man's real name, even in the US. "Mega" is the nickname Roll gave him (in the US). So both of them are "correct" in that he uses both.

I've played and beaten it a few times in the past. Its ok for the most part. It does what it needs to do, but alot of the wily castle stuff are out of whack. its like they wanted this to be megaman world 5 but with robot masters from 4 and 5 instead of all original robot masters. but instead of making semi-original levels like in the world series, they just copy pasted from 2, 4 and 5. i have no idea what they were thinking with the last level. quickman's room is even present in there as if they were either gonna have you face quickman too or you fight wily in there. the ending is also unsatisfying..not much of a sense of accomplishment when all you get is a "congratulation screen" alongside a "thank you for playing" screen.
one thing you didn't mention is the game gives you limited continues. so if you get a few game overs, the game boots you back to the title screen.

It's kinda sad that, until I got into Sonic, who had decent-to-good games on the system, I thought Game Gear was just some random, mediocre video game console that nobody cared about and I only knew about it because of this Mega Man game. I still have sort of the same feelings towards WonderSwan, though at least its Mega Man games were at least interesting, as opposed to this game, which is just a confusing mess of copy-pastes from the NES games.

I have beaten this game using an emulator and it is a technical marvel running on the game gear especially from the company US Gold which is known to make pretty terrible ports.
That being said, the game has pretty awful game feel, let alone just lacks content having only 5 robot masters, one of which is a Wily boss as well as not even having the traditional boss gauntlet.
As for game feel, it seems to run way to fast. Played so many Mega Man games, there is an inate feeling I have playing these games that the Game Gear version feels so off.
Again, it's an amazingly looking game and runs well, just feels off from the other Mega Man games.

Well, it's a North American exclusive release on a platform that was dominated by the competition, so it's not exactly the most affordable. Sometimes with releases, players can get away with the Japanese copy, but that's not an option. it was also never re-released, even on a system with Game Gear releases like the 3DS. It also shares the same name as 2 other titles in the franchise, those being the NES/Famicom version and the DOS version, with one being the start of the franchise and the other being infamous for its low quality.
