    • @glassfairy7884
      @glassfairy7884 День назад

      I agree that taking time to raise your child/children hurts the wife, no credit for all the hard work caring for the house him and our children, one that is disabled. Plus the years I spent taking care of foster children in addition to my own I get no credit for though caring for abused children was hard work 24/7. He got divorced the day we got our first retirement checks and he gets twice what I get. Yet, he was allowed after 43 years to file married instead on my being allowed to file single and when he didn't claim his 401k I got hit with the tax bill as well even though I didn't know about the 401k and didn't get a penny. But they came after me as well so I'm on the hook for the tax bill. So I got hit twice. Once by his getting twice what I get and then the tax bill and penalty and interest until it's paid. I had money taken from my tiny check to pay the tax bill, got it cut down but still it hurts.. If we are going to be looked at as joint legally both owing the taxes then we should both get the same amount of monthly social security check.

I was always told they don’t know why it’s still in the system and I didn’t receive it yet. Some ss workers said it could take years to get it.. it’s laughable. You can apply for social security benefits for your four children from your divorced ex-husbands social security account if he is paying or not paying child support. It happened to me. I divorced my ex- and had four children with no extra income coming in and he didn't pay child support, and we lived in separate states too which made collecting child support difficult because different states have different child support laws. He was in arrears of 14,000 dollars. I found out that I could apply for his social security benefits for my kids as long as they are under the age of 18. Once each one of them ages to 18, the benefits stop because at 18 a child is considered an adult. I don't know if this will work for you but it's worth a shot, for your kids. So call social security and find out if you are eligible. Good luck!

    • @AmericanStuff2024
      @AmericanStuff2024 12 дней назад

      Lynn: The original law required a 20 year marriage. Women definitely do need to acquire financial knowledge. As an adult, it is your responsibility to learn important adult information.
      When you divorced, you may well have had rights to a portion of his company pension plan, too, but if you did not claim them, you may have lost money then, too.
      In order to stop missing financial gain, you might want to put a news app on your smartphone and scan the business headlines and personal finance headlines daily. Each month there can be 1 to 4 articles there worth reading.
      It is your responsibility to read throughout your life. Otherwise, expect to miss other important information.
      Who do you imagine is responsible to take care of your needs? When you turned 18, you acquired that responsibility.
      Until you turned 18 your parents had to provide a shirt list of necessities specified by State law.
      When you married, your State law probably required your husband to provide a shirt list of necessities to you, and you were probably required by law to do his housekeeping. That is common. Nobody is assigned responsibility to be your adult financial advisor. You either hire a financial advisor, attend public programs, or read for yourself. Hired financial advisors might gain commissions and have a financial interest in what advice they give.
      This is exactly why more and more women are getting business degrees. Many women want to learn how to manage money.
      If people are limited to expecting to spend all the money they receive, they might not be able to afford both a home and s car in retirement.
      If you remarried before something like 60, you would not have gotten ex-spouse benefits anyway.

      Eljs: You ought to qualify for Medicaid and SNA unless your State does not participate much in those l. Medicaid benefits are more extensive than Medicare except the healthcare providers receive less.
      Most food banks don't tie their services to Social Security.
      Your community ought to have a federally funded senior nutrition lunch program free to you on weekdays. These are held at Senior Centers, community centers, recreation centers, and religious building social halls.
      Talk to your local librarian at least by phone about programs like MEALS ON WHEELS that deliver lunches and dinners free to the elderly.
      People who live in cities average a 15% higher standard of living partly because of private charity and local, state, and federal programs.
      If you live in a rural area without such assistance, that is your choice. You vote kinder or more cruel uses of State funds. Your State government either ops in or ops out of federal programs.
      Amtrak told me there are States where families buy one way tickets to an out of State destination and put a dementia relative on the train. Then there is nobody at the destination, but the neighboring State puts them in nursing homes.
      You need to take the best care of yourself possible.

    My husband passed in March 2020 after being married for 49 years. Because I stopped working to care for him, I was not eligible for spouse benefits, only the highest of our two checks.

    • @AmericanStuff2024
      @AmericanStuff2024 12 дней назад

      Zada: Huh? Your ability to collect your deceased spouse's check amount IS a spousal benefit. While he was alive, your choice was to receive HALF the amount he received on his record or all of your own benefits. You could have collected half on his record and waited to collect on yours at a later time, for example.
      I had a classmate whose wife predeceased him. He collected on her account until his full retirement age and worked consulting until he had maximized his own record. Then he switched to his own account.
      Social Security can help you calculate how to maximize your income from among benefits you are entitled to.
      I was told that my ex-spouse benefits would be automatic once I activated our accounts being linked.
      The widow benefit is the amount of his check instead of the amount of your check.
      I was told by Social Security that what actually happens is that they continue paying the widow from her account AND add to that from the husband's account to raise her monthly income to match what he had been receiving.
      They ask for his Social Security number.
