I have sailed with Carnival multiple times and I have two more booked for next year. Carnival makes it very clear about what time you are expected back at the ship at every port. They tell you to make sure that you are on the ship's time and not the island's time. Most of the time if someone is missing they wait a short time after the sailing time but they will not wait long. If you are late because of the excursion that you booked through Carnival then they will wait until you return but if you are late because of an excursion you booked on your own then they will not wait. YOU are responsible for getting back to the ship on time. YOU WILL be responsible for getting to the next port or back to the home port. Stop with the entitlement mentality.

This is something that I found online about circumstances of when a cruise ship will leave the port: Generally, ships wait as long as they possibly can for passengers to return, but it also depends on how tight the schedule is, the mood of the officers in charge and whether port officials allow the ship to stay docked for a longer period of time. As you see it's not always up to the cruise line as to when they have to leave.

We were on a Carnival excursion in Hawaii. Our guide driving our tourist van ran into a retaining wall, wrecking the left front tire and quarter panel. They had to call for another bus to get us…. Luckily this was a carnival excursion, so the ship had to wait for us. When we finally got back to the dock, People were jeering at us, not knowing we had just been in a car accident. They ended up refunding us for the entire excursion, and sent the typical chocolate covered strawberries. The driver actually told the cruise line we got a flat tire. It was a little more than a flat tire…and I showed the customer service agent the picture of the wrecked van. Craziness.

A couple of the guys got off the bus and went to take a look and found something was loose or broken but somehow they got it fixed. We made it back with 5 minutes to spare. While there we had "free drinks". We left and the roads were full of downed trees. I helped clear the roads. We got back to ship at least an hour late. The van driver pulled us up at the gangway. The ship was already loose. Only holding via thrusters. We got hee hawed by all the passengers on that side. As soon as we crossed that gangway. The crew yanked it it. Personally I never take a passport ashore unless it's required, I take a copy. I'm much more likely to get my pocket picked or lose it ashore, then I am to just leave it in the safe. In relation to guests, the cabin steward and a security officer goes to their cabin and search for their passports, wallets, purses ect and they're send to guest relations who then hands them over to the port agent. The port agent will then transfer their property to them and they're responsible to make it to the next port of call or back to the home port on their own. Same applies to crew but it's the crew office that handles the property transfer as all crew passports are kept. Yes, the crew can't keep their passports while on a contract because they might jump ship.. I don't think the same applies for American crew, but most American crew are considered like semi guests..

Keep your phone in airplane mode so that it matches the ship's time. Set multiple alarms on your phone to remind you when there's 3 hours, 2 hours, and 1 hour before the cruise leaves. When that last 1 hour alarm goes off, you should be At The Gangway Getting On The Ship. That is a hard rule I live by while cruising. I am always back on the ship a minimum of one hour before the time. *Better to be safe than stranded.*

And lastly ships have a schedule to keep and aren't like cars. They can only go so fast. It's not like in a car when your going 65mph and your behind schedule so you bump it up to 85mph. The best ways to be on time back to the cruise ship to avoid being left behind is to use what I call the 2 hour rule and that is to be back on board 2 hours before the cruise ship departs the port of call. The second way is to wear a wristwatch that requires manual setting of the time so you can always be sure that you are on ship time and not shore time because ship time is not always the same as shore time. Also if you plan to go off to do any shopping on your own it is very important to set a time limit and go by that time limit meaning once the time is up it is time to stop and head back to the ship to ensure that you are back on board at least 2 hours ahead of the scheduled departure.

This is the reason I always keep an analog watch with me. Old school wins every time. I will set my watch to ship time. Every time I go into port and then I know what time I have to be back by that time and I’m always always an hour early, because I never want this to happen to me. I think I’m usually even two hours early but I know that I’m always right there because I don’t wanna get left behind. I feel for them because that’s not good. That one woman was still in her bathing suit. They probably don’t even have proper clothes. Who knows if they have any money on them too they may have it in the safe on the ship. It only took what they were willing to spend for the day. I hope they get help..💞

Just got off the Vista today - hundreds were late at all 3 ports - mostly because of the shore excursions running late. But - some folks have the mindset that they will wait . . . they won't unless you're on a Carnival excursion that's late. That's why I warn folks against non-Carnival excursions and why I recommend that they get passports.

This is a good reminder to 1) stay on ship’s time and keep track of it, 2) take your passport or at least a photo of your passport with you when you leave the ship, 3) take a credit card, and 4) take an excursion sponsored by the cruise line. After 53 cruises, I’ve only heard announcements that we were waiting for an excursion to return so we were delaying departure three times as I recall. I’ve heard the announcements for people to report to Guest Services probably a dozen times while in port and subsequently we left at about an hour later than planned. I sail RC primarily.
But I’ve seen dock runners, the most notable group was seen not on the dock but on the road, I was on a land vacation in Jamaica. There was a huge traffic jam due to a sudden sink hole in the main road through Ocho Rios. We saw an entire wedding party, bride in gown and all, running along the road…their transportation must have been stuck in the traffic and the ship’s horn had sounded. Not the best way to begin a marriage but they will never forget it.

ALWAYS RUN - no matter if the ship is leaving. Often the crew of the ship is watching for runners. If you are not running as hard as you can, whoever makes the call to help you might decide not to help you. If you RUN there is a small chance someone will take pity on you and you might find yourself getting a ride to the ship.

The last time I saw this happen on HAL, the head of the hotel department was standing at the gangway and she had the passports in her hand. Apparently HAL goes into the cruisers safe and removes the passports. When the couple did not show up she gave the passports to an official on the dock. The man standing next to me said “I hope they have a credit card with them.”

That's what Carnival does. There's a port representative that lives at the port, and their job is to help pier runners get home or to the next port. Carnival security will go into the pier runners' rooms to gather up their passports and important documents and hand them off to the port representative. I watched this happen on the Carnival Legend in Alaska in 2017. The port representative seemed more upset than the couple amiably taking their time back to the ship.

Push off is 4:30, be aboard 30 before that and if you take and independent tour head back 45-mins early. I had a ship tour guide that insisted on waiting for 2 passengers who she thought was lost, but had in fact taken a taxi back to the ship and turned off their phones so that the ship couldn't call them to see where they were! We waited an hour and got to the ship 30 mins after all aboard. We were so angry with the tour guide because she insisted that the ship would wait no matter what while we protested and suggested that they were likely on the ship, which in fact they were! I have never had such a fast push off in all the ships I have been on and I really think that if we had been 15 mins longer we would have been left behind. 10 of us almost missed our boat because of 1 selfish couple.

I used to work at a cruise port and we had people coming in all the time to shop at the end of the day because they wanted to go to the beach or do other things and didn't want to lug anything behind them. Then they would come last minute and I had to ask them what ship they were on and if they knew the cut off time. They would be drinking and having a good time, but not because you're on vacation means you don't have to stick to a schedule. Sometimes they are so drunk, they can't even find their ship. They always give the last call times, and someone in the group need to keep a few brain cells sober enough to remember it.
