  • We tell our experience of being on a cruise ship with one cruise passenger who wanted us to be removed from the suites restaurant while onboard a cruise ship during the pandemic and we were shocked by the reason why! What do cruise ships do with upset passengers at sea? How do Cruise Ship Crew handle these difficult cruise passengers? Are cruise ship passengers bad people? We talk through our experience being the on a cruise ship with one cruise ship passenger who took actions toward us and the cruise crew in the Suites Restaurant onboard our Caribbean Cruise Ship 2023.

I'm a 68 year old truckdriver from Canada. First time viewing a JJ Cruise entry. I found you both pleasant and knowledgeable in your presentation. Much more than some of the more mainstream vloggers. I've no doubt your numbers will continue to grow. As for the woman in this particular scenario, some people can't be fixed as they don't see themselves as needing to be fixed. Of course you already know that. Best of luck guys.

I was actually racially profiled when walking into a Loyalty Lounge. The woman asked me if I knew where I was and if I belonged there. I just kind of ignored her and enjoyed my time there until my wife showed up and we departed for the Theater. The entire time I could see her staring our way. Later we found out that we were actually at a higher loyalty level than she was. Ha!

I used to work in the Loyalty department for a cruise line, and your story is completely believable. Don't get me wrong some of the guests that I talked to were some of the nicest people, but every so often I would get a guest that had completely unbelievable requests that they demanded I fulfill. As an example I had one couple call in because they wanted a different stateroom, which is normally a standard request and easily accommodated. The problem came in the fact that they didn't want just any stateroom they wanted one specific stateroom, that was already occupied. I offered them every stateroom I could, including getting permission to upgrade them from the balcony they wanted up to a suite right next door to the room they wanted, for no price increase, they would not take it. I finally had to hand them off to my supervisor, because in their words I was too much of an idiot to know how important they were. Sad thing was they weren't even in the highest loyalty tier, so I can only imagine how bad they're going to get as they cruise more with that cruise line.

I’ve been in the tourism industry nearly 30 years. Loyalty program people can be some of the absolute worst - whether they are theme park “passholes,” hotel “elitists” when 2/3s your hotel is also platinum/vacation club, or cruise ship. You can’t even say people who also come from customer service are the nice ones because I have seen plenty with the air of “Well *I* would never do that!” Suuuure. I just hope when I go solo next month in April for the first time no one comes after me on my phone. I’m an introverted solo traveler and plan to scroll while waiting for a meal or show or read a book on my phone. I do not work that ship and I’ll be damned if anyone talks to me like I am. 😂

I like to dress comfortable when I fly because I don’t have to go to work when I landed. I guess I didn’t dress nice enough for first class because the flight attendant stop me and asked if I was going the wrong way. I was just shocked and show her my ticket. That is the strangest thing I've ever heard of. Of course, my wife and I have never stayed in a suite (and are unlikely to do so unles there is one heck of a sale). But everyone on the ship should treat the staff with courtesy and compassion. They work long hours to make sure we all have a wonderful time on our cruise. There's no excuse for being nasty to the cruise staff.

First time cruiser in May 2023 on Celebration. We had many conversations with so many people who were Gold and higher. They were great and they could see that we were lowly Blue status by our cards hanging around our necks. They all had great advice and we just had great conversations with them. Where I have had issues with people of Gold or higher status has been on Facebook groups. I am a member of many many many Carnival groups. It really shocks me how some people talk about anyone at a lower status. No one should act like they are better than the next. We are all there to have a good time. I really am the person who just kicks back and relaxes. You do you and I will do me. My husband and I keeps to ourselves for the most part but will share a table with anyone and conversate. We had a blast and are so grateful that we did not run into any of those people. I love your channel and think you guys are great and hope to run into you on a ship one day just so I can say "Hi".

As a minority female, I have been asked multiple times if I work in a certain department. So I could run whatever errands they need!
Never mind I have no uniform on.
I am in the top tier of most lines I cruise because as a solo traveler, I often get double points so reach higher level faster.
Don’t mind the idiots, we will never get rid of them. Challenge them so they hopefully become more aware of reality, but never let them cool your enthusiasm for cruising.
The sense of entitlement that some people seem to have is enough to sour life for others. Keep outing them whenever possible. Good work!

Eating breakfast in a main dining area where we shared large tables with other guests. This one particular woman was telling everyone how her daughter just lost a couple grand in the casino. Like, “Oh I said she could 500 but not a penny more !” And it was very braggy. THEN she tells the waiter she wants cranberry juice. He says, Maam we don’t have cranberry in this restaurant but we do on the other end of the ship! He looked at her like Please don’t make me go get it. Lol. Well you know where this is going !! She was like I WANT CRANBERRY ! Well, he fetched her juice for her and guess what ???? She never even took one sip of it. She got up and left the table about five minutes after he brought it. Everyone was watching in disbelief. We all talked about her after she left.

The only reason you attain the top level is that you have had the privilege of taking many cruises. The better you treat and respect the staff, the more they will try their best to serve you. The only experience I have had with entitled passengers came with someone at my table snapping their fingers at the staff to get their attention. I strongly suggested that they have some patience and wait for their server to return. He was so insulted that he got up and left. The rest of the table had a very peasant meal, no complaints and the only comment from my other table mates was "some people think they are so special."

Drinks not right, too hot, too cold, dining alone ( No wonder!) I have an autoimmune disorder. Since the pandemic, we only sail in suites so that we do not have the long lines getting on and off the ships and so we can eat with much smaller number of people in the suite restaurant and relax on sea days in the suite lounge. It reduces my exposure to Covid, flu, colds and Norovirus! Fewer people means less risk. Most of the suite guests we meet are very friendly and do not behave like jerks towards crew members or other passengers. I know we certainly do not!

My partner and I have seen similar to this (outrageous demands for service, complain about everything) in the main dining room and the suite restaurant on various cruises. FYI: sometimes it's sort of a scam to make enough noise that the restaurant manager gives them a certificate to the steakhouse or whatever to appease them so they still leave a good end of cruise survey or so they don't call the cruise line main office to complain. I.e. They have learned that their bad behavior gets them a reward.

One of the husbands threw an absolute fit when no one came around to remove the lobster from its shell on formal night. He kept saying that he paid enough for his suite that the lobster should be removed. He threw such a big fit that the maître d' came over and did it himself. The rest of us removed it ourselves, no big deal. His wife was so embarrassed that she actually got up and left and did not return that evening. He finally left and the other couple apologized many times. The husband sat in silence at dinner the rest of the week! His wife and the other couple were lovely to talk with! Lol

This reminds me of a situation I had. It wasn't on a ship but similar. I was at the Dorothy Chandler pavilion in LA to see an opera. During the intermission my son went and bought me a sandwich because my sugar was low. While eating part of the sandwich the usher came up to me and said a lady wanted me removed because even though the show wasn't on at the time she said it was disrespectful that I eat in the theater. The usher said he wasn't going to remove me but to finish the sandwich. In the meantime the lady was 3 rows in front of me. I really didn't notice right away that she was standing at her seat staring at me giving me the death stare. When she realized I wasn't being removed she yelled from her seat how disrespectful I was to eat at an opera. She didn't believe the reason I was eating. Anyways that's my story

Guys, your titles are getting better and better..LOL. You mentioned the "class system" and I do think staff are taught to treat some people with "more respect" due to being in a suite. We actually personally experienced this ourselves when we were on the MSC Divina. We won a ridiculously low bid on a yacht club cabin. As such we were afforded all the same perks as those who paid full price for their YC cabins. Our personal butler often referred to those who were not in the YC area cabins as the "GENERAL POPULATION!" She explained how we could use our key card to bypass all those GP people waiting for or already on elevators. In addition, she told us that she would make all specialty reservations and escort us to them so we could bypass all those GP people. We walked ourselves. LOL. We went for gelato one night and when the server behind the counter saw we were YC, his whole demeanor changed. He said "OHHH, you're YC. I can do whatever you need." He tried to wait on us before the people who were already standing there! Insane. I think the lines think that because those in suites and perhaps with high loyalty status deserve this type of treatment because they have spent so much money. Right or wrong? It depends on your viewpoint. What is wrong, is the way that woman handled herself while at dinner. I hope she watched this and realized just how wrong she was!

Look, if you are really that wealthy you’d either have chartered your own yacht or actually own your own yacht with a staff to cater to your every whim. You know, a 200+ foot yacht that sleeps only 16 guests and has a staff of 30 people? I wasn't a big fan of people talking on thier phones through the whole dining experience.
If I was personally out for nice dinner with my husband, somewhere upscale, and the table next to me was talking on thier phones the entire time, yeah - I'd be a little annoyed. Dining out is about connecting with your partner and enjoying the food and wine. I have a rule that when we go out to eat, the phones are put away and we have a conversation. No looking at social media or texting OR calling people while others are sitting at the table with you. Its the polite thing to do. WOW and OMG, can I relate to your situation. In 2005, I booked a 'surprise' cruise for my husband on the Queen Mary 2 as he, as a child, immigrated to Canada with his Mom on the original Queen Mary. We booked a Britannia balcony cabin, to find out 3 weeks before our cruise, that we were upgraded to Queen's Grill. We thought, 'what a treat'. NOT! Our dining venue was the Queen's Grill. We have never dined with such a self-absorbing, self-righteous, entitled group of people. They were so rude to the Maitre'd and servers, that we were embarrassed. They mocked our servers' accents. What? Our butler couldn't do enough for us, but was accused of stealing one of our tablemate's wife's jewellery, who were in the suite next to us. She was such an abuser of alcohol...aka a 'drunk', that management found her jewellery under their bed. It was a nightmare! Because Cunard, at the time, was so class conscience, we vowed that we would never accept an upgrade to this level. We are respectable cruisers, and accept everyone but having this experience gave us a look at how SOME of the 'privileged' live. Not pretty! As an aside, the cruise management, met with us and asked if we would sail from Southampton to New York, FREE OF CHARGE, to keep the peace with our 4 other tablemates. Because we were not retired, at the time, we declined their very kind offer. So, you're story is so relatable that I had to comment. Great video!!!

Nah. Status doesn’t necessarily determine how you treat people. I mean for some people it might but my wife and I always cruise in suites and we are extra polite and respectful to others especially staff. It’s always please and thank you, tipping above normal rates including above prepaid gratuities.

I exclusively stay in suites on cruise ships. I also blog about how to fully enjoy suites amenities. You both did nothing wrong. What happened to you is some frequent cruise passengers believe for some reason, they own the brand. The openly complain, loudly and make a scene. Sad really. They are usually very lonely people. I am sorry this happened to you both.

I’d love it if you two created a “press pass” and stuck it behind your room key on your lanyard
Or you whipped it out and said “very interesting, I am so excited to get your opinion on riff raff cruising, and one of you pulls out a mic 🎤

I dont know if you saw Triangle of Sadness, but there is a scene where this older entitled lady complained about the sails being dirty to the Captain at the Captain's dinner. When the Captain told her the boat doesnt have sails she got her husband involved until the Captain said he would get them cleaned. Some people are just miserable.

As a teen, I worked in both a McDonald's and at an amusement park. Later I worked in a call center. Outrageously demanding customers / passengers / honestly just people, will never surprise me. That said, the woman you encountered was pretty crazy.

I have been to a hotel for a meal and observed a family of five who were all busy on their phones. That made me sad but I would never have dreamed of complaining about their behaviour. That is their business not mine. You guys have your business to run and are not accountable to other passengers. Keep up your good work.

Don't judge that family, either. You cannot assume anything about others from a two second glance.

This reminds me of a story that a friend of mine who was a waiter at the San Francisco Airport Hyatt once told me. He was a very "regal" black guy from Ann Arbor Michigan. The story is a very annoying French woman snapped her fingers when she wanted his attention. He would walk by and there she was, snapping her fingers! He could not take it after a point. He walked up to her table and snapped HIS fingers in her face. He then haughtily said "Madame! SNAP! This is America SNAP! We do not snap our fingers! SNAP! We will wait out turn just like EVERYONE else around here! SNAP!" He said the woman was speechless!

I worked in the public eye all my life. I worked with dirt poor and uneducated, and the fabulously wealthy. Both of those groups were actually easy to work with. Give honest service, with a smile. The impossible middle were the wanna-be newly wealthy that thought they were important, and the in debt up to their eyeballs group that wanted to portray themselves as wealthy of sophisticated.
