    Absolutely! We just did this on our last cruise and despite the fact that we reported them twice they continued to do it. Not only was it a dangerous fire hazard, but their smoke was coming into our balcony and forcing us to keep our stateroom doors to the balcony closed every morning instead of enjoying our cruise. Finally security had to be called and they had the audacity to stare us down at dinner and breakfast the next few days at our suite only dining room. The entitlement of people just amaze me - never thinking once that they were ruining our enjoyment for the $1000’s we spent our first vacation in 3 years.

    I'm an ex smoker. There was a time when we were able to smoke on the balcony. I never never ever tossed a cigarette into the ocean. I'm happy that you reported this to security. Every smoker on board a ship knows about smoking areas. This guy was just too lazy to walk to a smoking area and was irresponsible and could have caused a really big problem.

    I most definitely support your actions. I was cruising on a Princess ship in 2019 and while sitting on my balcony a cigarette landed on the deck beside me. I immediately stamped it out and brought it to the attention of my cabin attendant who reported it to the ships security. I was told later that it had blown down from the smoking section two decks above me. I am a non smoker and have often wondered why they don't have a comfortable indoor smoking room with good ventilation and window views to the ocean for people to comfortably enjoy their habit. This would avoid the need for smokers to stand on an outside deck in all kinds of weather where such "accidents" can occur.

      It’s time people broke up with their “habit” that endangers others. I shared an office for years with a heavy smoker. Had heart surgery last year because of damage to my vessels. The surgeon noted I must have been a smoker and questioned me on it after the surgery since I had indicated I’ve never smoked. He was shocked when I pointed out the 2nd hand smoke I got. Thanks to the ahole who smoked and endangered MY health! It’s been complete hell recovering from heart surgery for the last year (I’m still not back to work yet!) and thanks to someone ELSE’s nasty habit!

      Your experience is the classic example why smoking is not a 'right'.
      I was a teenager in the 1970s, when the dangers of smoking were really being publicised. Smokers kept pushing back and arguing about their rights.
      My father would not have a bar of it. When someone said to him "Do you mind if I smoke" he was known to say, "Do you mind if I throw up."

    • @Karen-r7m
      @Karen-r7m Год назад +1

      It is a matter of respect on the part of smokers. Just saying they should quit is not reasonable either but smoking in designated areas where it won’t bother non smokers and disposing of their butts in appropriate places (ash buckets or smoking posts) should be expected. Telling people to quit is like telling drinkers to give it up because people don’t like their unruly behaviour or throwing up in public places (which can be dangerous if someone slips on it not to mention disgusting).

    • @brontewcat
      @brontewcat Год назад

      @@Karen-r7m The problem is their addiction can kill other people. It is hard to quit, I understand, but smokers need to try.
      Both my mother and mother-in-law died lung cancer, but neither smoked. My mother-in-law’s appeared to be related to smoking. Therefore, I think it is quite reasonable to expect other people to give up the addiction if they can.

    I agree that you did the right thing in reporting. I don't understand why it's so hard to use the designated smoking sections. This is a good way for cruise ships to ban smoking entirely. I am a smoker, and there are so few places where we can actually smoke in public. I am a polite smoker. I don't light up around others if I can help it, and if others are present, I always ask if they mind (even in a smoking section).

    I'm a retired Marine and have spent many months on large Navy ships. Fire is absolutely the biggest risk on a ship. Even more so than a modest size leak. Leaks of reasonable size can be plugged, sealed and contained but fire get out of control very, very quickly damaging electrical, hyrrolics and other critical components. Tge only place we were allowed to smoked was on the fantail so if a cigarette accidentally went overboard it has no choice but to go into the sea.

    Smokers complain a lot about how they're treated, but if all smokers were even a little considerate of others (like the person who commented below about bringing a tin to the beach for his butts. Good on yer!) they wouldn't be treated badly. From blowing smoke at other people to making a mess all over with discarded butts to the danger in throwing butts overboard on a ship, the behavior exhibited by too many smokers is why non-smokers get so angry. So, thank you, Jordan, for reporting that guy, and thank you to all smokers who are kind, polite, and considerate.

  • @HeatherTravels

    I think it was good that you reported it, and I hope this isn't something that happens frequently! On our cruise last year on Harmony of the Seas, we saw a napkin go overboard from one of the top decks (I even caught in on video!), but I'm sure that was the wind. On our most recent cruise last week, the crew had already issued warnings not to feed the birds or throw anything into the water (we were in Alaska and at Hubbard Glacier). Seagulls can be incredibly aggressive if people start feeding them. Well, while we were docking in Victoria, someone was obviously throwing food to the seagulls because they started swarming the ship and landing on the top of the lifeboats. I was standing on the promenade deck watching the docking process, and someone had spilled some popcorn nearby. A man walking around the promenade deck actually stopped, picked up some of the popcorn, and came over to the rail to throw it to the seagulls! I firmly said, "Sir, please don't feed the birds" and he said, "Okay", kind of sheepishly, dropped the popcorn, and walked away. So sometimes another passenger calling someone out might be just the thing to remind them that a behavior is not a good idea.

Him on the other hand, 3 days into the cruise and he's on the balcony smoking. Now, he wasnt chucking lit cigarettes overboard, he was using a bottle, but still it really upset me that he wouldnt go up to the pool deck where they had a perfectly good smoking section. This is really unacceptable behaviour of smokers. If your room and your balcony are no smoking, then dont freaking smoke there!

    Hello - this is a tricky one. First & foremost, I wholeheartedly agree it is very dangerous and beyond egregious to toss a lighted butt of a cigar / cigarette off of a cruise ship. It immediately lets you know of the type of person you are dealing with. I am an executive manager overseeing hundreds of employees and have seen / heard / been through it all. I have learned and tend to practice that it is best to handle situations like such in a polite, giving benefit of doubt to stupidity verses to purposeful intent towards the person who committed the ‘wrongdoing’. Tell them once politely yet firmly that what they did is improper and why. Put them on record and hopefully it will be a very important learning lesson as well as ‘character changing’. If done again… well then you now know that they are really idiots as well as societal rule breakers.

    A small puff of wind can blow a cigarette butt up/down/sideways & it can end up becoming an ember ready to ignite in any nook or cranny on the ship. I'm a smoker, so without bias, I absolutely think you did the right thing.

    Back many years ago, my father in law smoked and at that time you could smoke on your balcony. I remember he would just sit out there with his Bud beer and smoke whilst throwing his spent cigarette butts overboard. I told him not a great idea but to no avail. After the Princess fire, all cruise ships banned smoking on your balcony. Smart rule to implement and hopefully enforce.

    I am a smoker. Was on equinox for an 8 day eastern Caribbean cruise.
    Deck 5 on the equinox port side is a smoking area and starboard is non smoking.
    I 💯 % agree with you reporting the man throwing a cigarette off the ship. It is a safety hazard to all. I would be the first person to say something to someone who did.
    I’m thankful we even have a smoking area and respect it wholeheartedly.

    I'm currently a smoker and NO WAY is that acceptable behavior!! I feel he was showing some "self-entitled & pompous" traits! As a smoker, I think you did the right thing. It was reckless. Now, do I think this person should be banned or thrown off the ship for this offense? No. I think he needs to be found, made to watch the horrific video of that Princess cruise, and given a warning. Inform him that there are cameras all over the ship and he will be watched the entire length of the cruise. Should it happen even ONE MORE TIME...he will be escorted off the ship at next port.

    You absolutely did the right thing. For anyone who wants to argue the point, I challenge you to chew a piece of gum, then roll down your car window while moving at about 60mph and toss it out. Odds are it will be stuck somewhere along the side of your vehicle next time you stop.

    I have seen someone throw a cig butt overboard luckily we were on the lowest open area and it was witnessed going into the water, I told them that it was dumb to trow it overboard due to risk of fire, the guys were intoxicated, once I had finished my own smoke, they were sitting up on the railing and laughing about how dumb I am for saying something to them. I went back inside and staright to the customer service counter that was right by the door to let them know they drunk guys were not being safe. I don't remember seeing them anymore after that night, but I don't know what happened to them. When you are on a cruise you have to be diligent about safety cause it could save your own life in addition to theirs.

    I am a smoker . I only smoke in designated areas on cruise ships. I have never seen a smoker throw a cigarette, cigar or anything like that over board. I have very 22 cruises under my belt. In the smoking areas there are many many ashtrays. Some are portable and some are fixed . I also carry a portable ashtray on me for ports so I always have a spot to put out and store butts. I know it's illegal to smoke on the balconies on all cruise ships so he was wrong from the start. It's sometimes illegal to smoke in certain ports . Mexico just announced that smoking is illegal in all public place except private residences. That is fine by me. When you visit another country you should always respect culture and laws.

    Frankly, I think being in the middle of the ocean on a burning cruise ship is not on my bucket list. With this in mind, I'll say something if I see this happening. One time, I noticed someone on the balcony below me smoking, I yelled as loud as I could, "no smoking on your balcony". That worked!

    I am a smoker and would NEVER throw my cigarette butt off the ship or smoke in prohibited areas. The people in the smoking area were all very respectful and used the containers provided, especially because we don't want them to make the whole ship non-smoking due to problems. Even as a smoker I would turn someone in for not following the rules, it puts people in danger.

    I am a smoker and I would never throw a cigarette anywhere. We were on a Royal ship and our neighbor threw their loved ones ashes overboard. Lucky for us it didn’t come onto our balcony but it did below us and a few decks down. It blew into peoples eyes and mouths. They had to disembark at the next port. All cruise companies tell you do not throw anything over the ship!!

    YES YES - so important, I travelled with 2 smokers on my last celebrity cruise - 13 May, Meditteranean fro Barcelona, they were soooo fastidious about only using the smoking areas with the BUTT boxes... but your tale of the Princess cruise and the fire was incredible, and not known to a lot, WELL DONE !!!

  • @lizkotchek928
    @lizkotchek928 Год назад

    This is definitely a dangerous thing to do. I am a smoker and last January was on the Celebrity Reflection. I met pretty much all of the smokers on our 8 day sailing. The ashtrays on the tables seemed unsafe with the wind blowing so I brought out a can of water for people to throw their butts in. Everyone complied and there was no danger of any ember's flying. I hope other smokers read this. One of the problems is all of the smoking sections on this ship were outdoors in very windy spots. I even went out in the rain with an umbrella to smoke.
