There was absolutely NO reason for that person to make any type of slurs or nasty comments. Some people do not understand manners and how to act in public. Too much of a "me me me" mentality.

I completely agree with you on the situation. If the bar was open then people get drinks.
Once a person puts unwanted physical contact on another is assault.
Hate speech against anyone is not tolerated. There’s rules on the ships and shame on anyone who defends people who break the rules and think rules don’t apply to them.

😮absolutely, but if you walk up to a bar, to order drinks, and it’s in a performance space suck as this, if someone says “excuse me, we are trying to watch the show” the kind response would be oh sorry, did not see you there, we get it drinks and move along…..

    • @ajs11201
      @ajs11201 Год назад

@@yhz2pvd Of course--the couple ordering beverages should be aware and polite enough to move out of the way as expeditiously as possible. However, that couple is at the mercy of the bartender who may need a couple minutes to prepare those drinks. Either way, that's no cause for fisticuffs.

Well done Celebrity. I know the Eden Lounge well and going to the bar for drinks during performances is totally normal. It's not a formal theatre venue. If you sit at the bar its inevitable that people will come to the bar to get served. The clue is in the name - BAR.
There are constantly people coming and going at this venue, it's part of its character.

When you resort to hate speech or physical violence, you've escalated the situation so far to the point that standing in someone's view of a show is trivial. I'm very glad Celebrity took this seriously, and actually followed through!

Here’s the thing about freedom-people are free to think whatever they wish. People ARE homophobic and racist. People ARE angry. Our species is not a gentle one. Humans experience all kind of emotions and opinions. BUT, when those thoughts turn to actions or policies that cause physical or emotional to harm others or interfere with the rights of others to live their lives peacefully, the line is crossed. In this case, it clearly was. The homophonic slurs and physical assault crossed a line. I am glad there are consequences and I’m glad the couple is pressing charges.

I'm kind of amazed anyone used the phrase "they asked for it", a phrase often used to dismiss violence against another person. I don't care how rude someone's behavior is, they don't deserve to be assaulted and have slurs thrown at them. Hate speech is, sadly, only illegal in the US if it incites violence or threatens bodily harm to the person the hate is directed to. That doesn't mean there aren't consequences to the person wielding the words, both social consequences and as you point out, Jordan, legal ones when a person is not in the States.

Being in another country is something people forget about. Sadly, this is a big lesson learned the hard way. Kudos to the security team for taking steps immediately and appropriately. I feel like so many people have lost the ability to use self-control. I do think the couple could have waited to get drinks, or be more observant to the fact that people are trying to see, but the reaction of this person was not appropriate. That reaction doesn't fit the situation.

This was in no way okay. This infuriates me - assault and homophobic, discriminatory and incendiary language has zero place on a cruise (or anywhere in my opinion).
But also, the bar was open, if they didn’t want people coming up to get a drink from an OPEN Bar, they should have sat elsewhere. They chose their seats. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The couple at the bar did a minor wrong, probably inadvertently. There is absolutely no excuse for the seated person not to have handled it with a polite request that they move. The whole encounter should have gone this way: Seated person (to couple at bar): “Excuse me, but you’re blocking our view.” Couple at bar: “Oh, so sorry.” (They move out of seated person’s line of sight.) Seated person: “No worries. Thanks.” Even if the couple at the bar were not responsive to the initial request, the next step would have been to appeal to the bartender or another crew member - again, politely and without attributing anything more than inadvertence to the couple at the bar.

Freedom of speech is a USA constitutional right.. but outside of the USA.. its different.. as an example "Freedom of Speech" is not in Canada.. we have something similar called "Freedom of Expression" the only restrictions to this are when its in line with international human rights law. so in Canada this includes the freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, whether orally, in writing or in print, or through any other media of choice. So in BC and in Canada hate speech is prohibited.. and discriminatory speech is prohibited under our human rights. lots to digest sorry :)

  • @PsychGal1980
    @PsychGal1980 Год назад +1

Two thoughts come to mind when thinking about this incident:
    1) An open bar is an invitation to patrons to order a drink. It is unfortunate that the room is appointed in a way that approaching the bar would block people who want to order from the bar BUT, as I said, if they’re serving drinks, it is implied that you are welcomed to approach and order a drink. So perhaps the couple could have been more aware of their environs, but they were in fact using the space as it was intended.
2). The use of hate language moves the issue from an etiquette concern to a safety issue. Expressing beliefs that are considered “hateful” towards any people group indicates that it is no longer safe for you to have access to those people (and not the other way around) - which was composed in this case by the perpetrator actually getting physical with the gay couple. So even though you are free to have any thoughts or beliefs that feel right for you, hate speech is inherently threatening and cannot be allowed.

The same-sex couple should not have blocked the view of other cruisers. They could have waited till a break in the performance to order drinks or gone to another bar and carried their drinks into the performance venue.
But in what world does minor rudeness justify assault and verbal slurs?
So glad the perpetrator is being charged and prosecuted.

  • @sunkissed7377

The free speech issue frustrates me because many don’t understand that the US protects free speech meaning that you cannot be discriminated against or penalized for criticizing the government or any *public* institution. Private companies still have the discretion to remove you from their premises or ban you from their business for almost *any* reason.
The protections for free speech are not a “get-off-Scott-free” card! You can still face many different consequences for what you say - both social and legal consequences depending on the situation and severity. I hate that some people think that it means you can say anything anywhere however you want and nothing should happen to you. Even if that man had not laid hands on the couple, Celebrity could still have every right (in the US) to ban them from the ship/line for what they said and the disturbance they caused. Of course, in this case, physical assault came into the equation so this was much more serious than just a free speech issue. I just need to rant a bit.

I’ve sat in that venue and observed many people being served at the bar during a performance. It is an informal, open space not a theatre. Your view can also be blocked if you’re seated in that venue watching a band play and people get up to dance. Do you assault someone over that as well? Glad to see Celebrity took the incident very seriously and handled the situation well.

  • @glendalaforce9454

This venue isn't a theater. It's primarily a bar with some tables and chairs and couches scattered around. People come and go during the entertainment. If all the seats are taken People might stand around and watch for awhile and then move on. Meanwhile, people are doing what people do at at bar; they get drinks. It's almost impossible to not block someone's view.

Because of people like him, is that this Country is in the state it is now, unfortunately........"Do unto others as you would have done unto you". Kindness goes a long way and of all places, a cruise, where people go to have fun and peace, is not the place for this kind of behavior. Everyone is accountable to God for their choices, and it's nobody else's business. Show love and kindness instead of hatred!!

My husband and I took an NCL cruise with eight friends back in 1991. On the formal night, they surprised us with a cake for our second anniversary. This so incensed a woman sitting at an adjacent table that she stormed into the Captian’s reception. The cruise director told us she barged through the reception line and accosted the captain to express her disgust. He passed her to the hotel manager, whom she asked whether NCL would invoke their policy to remove “disruptive passengers” from the ship. The hotel manager replied that the line certainly would. Did she and her husband wish to disembark the next day?
Then at the farewell dinner, with the restaurant festively decorated, a crown or tiara was at each place setting. The crew did not want to make any assumptions; at our table each place had both a crown and tiara.

Wow! The couple who laid hands and used hate speech are going to learn a very hard and expensive lesson. as they SHOULD, it is Never Ever okay! Now my caveat : If only the same sex couple treated others with respect and kindness and didn’t refuse to move when asked, All this would have been avoided. The cruise line should absolutely close the bar during the performances to avoid confrontations like this. I also wonder if the same sex couple learned anything?

Hey Jordan. Wow. Escorted off the ship and arrrested in Ireland? I missed it. Arrested for the homophobic slurs or for physical assault? The whole situation very unfortunate.

You spun that very well. Let me just say that placing hands on anyone is wrong and therefore should be punishable by law. Having said that, wouldn't this whole incident have been avoided if this same sex couple had shown some consideration? Again, placing hands on someone is worthy of being held accountable by law. But..... Being oblivious of others kinda sucks, Yes?
Now, lets talk about where Celebrity Cruises holds some responsibility. EDEN SUCKS! That bar has been the topic of more controversy on RUclips than any other particular establishment at sea. Don did a video on the same subject about a year ago where he had gotten to his show/dinner about 45min early only to have a few people during the show, walk up to the bar, order drinks then hang out and BS for a good 20 min ruining the show for Don and his guests.
For the record, I am not gay. I've been married to a woman for the past 32 years. I have absolutely no problem with same sex couples. I believe same sex couples have come a very long way over the past 40-50 years and rightfully so.
Now look at how I felt compelled to defend my position on same sex couples. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just all be equal and call it a day?
    Well, I can dream, can't I ?

Part of what surprises me here is that it's pretty well known that cruise ships are a popular vacation choice for gay couples. While I understand that cruise ships can hold 5000 passengers or more these days--and that such an enormous group is mixed of all different backgrounds and beliefs--I still can't wrap my mind around someone being so disgusted by encountering a gay couple on a cruise ship.
Sorry if this is the stereotype card, but to me it's like a homophobic person being upset that her hairdresser is gay. Of course not all cruisers, hairdressers, florists, or caterers are gay, but the percentage of gay people in those professions is probably a tick higher than in other walks of life. Same on a cruise ship--be prepared to find a slightly higher percentage of gay couples on board than you would in some other vacation situation. If you can't tolerate that, then maybe cruise ships aren't for you.

It’s totally unacceptable to physically or verbally assault anyone, is there no room for conflict resolution.? Perhaps it would behoove the cruise line to modify that area of the venue so that sight lines aren’t obstructed.

That is not confirmed at this time. That said, we would expect that these passengers would never dare step foot on this cruise line ever again given they suffered the consequences of their actions.

What are the violent hate crime laws like in Ireland? I know in the US, they'd be in deep trouble. Federal hate crime laws would doom them.

I’m confused about something, you originally said it was “one” man who assaulted the gay couple, but now, here, in the video you were saying “they” were taken to jail and “they” will face the consequences. So was it one person arrested or several? It’s not clear. Also, you said the couple is in a huge amount of trouble, but I thought they were the party that was assaulted, why would they be in trouble?

People are free to say what they want but if they say something hateful, expect consequences. I also feel like if that’s how the person truly feels about same sex couples it’s strange they would chose such an inclusive cruise line. I’m so sorry that happened to that couple. We should all try to be aware of our surroundings and courteous to our fellow cruisers.
