Carnival is not in the wrong because itineraries can and do change for various reasons including mechanical problems. However I believe Carnival needs to properly set expectations with new cruisers and make them aware upfront with bold signage and within the online cruise manager that things don’t always go your way and to live with it and enjoy your vacation.

I have been saying this ever since my daughter was a toddler on our first cruise. She's now 12 going on 13 and we have been cruising every year, aside from the pandemic (wasn't taking that risk). People really need to READ, especially the fine print. Sick and tired of people complaining about the obvious. Research the ships BEFORE taking a cruise AND factor in the weather. Hurricane season is serious and should NEVER be taken lightly. What sense would it make to travel on a ship WITH issues AND risk being a floating hotel lost out at sea in bad weather? 🙄

Carnival is wrong. You and the comment you liked are bootlickers. It’s their ship having issues. It’s not like it’s weather related and this isn’t the first time. At this point they are scamming their customers with a bs contract. The compensation was not sufficient.

It seems that Carnival was fully aware that this ship was suffering mechanically and wasn't going to complete its scheduled itinerary. The propulsion issue was reported before the last cruise ended. Carnival falsely represented what they were offering these passengers until they boarded then proposed that crazy offer to them. Carnival had the opportunity to do the right thing. Greed took over the decision process, they allowed these passengers to board and then broke the bad news. Shame on Carnival. Everyone on board should receive a full refund and not some prorated future cruise credit. These cruise companies are treating the very customers that make them rich and pay the bills like trash.

I was on that ship August 10-18 during this uneventful cruise for those who stayed.
Our choices were leave the ship and get 100 % money back, leave the ship and get 125% for future cruise credit, or stay and get 400 dollar on board credit and also get a 25% cruise credit for a future cruise booking. Those were our options with the refund of credit for off shore excursions packages and tips be refunded.
I wasn’t happy about this but at least we got something. I think carnival got the better in this because all the fuel they saved for not going out that far away. I have a copy of the letter they sent to us.

I am a Platinum member on Carnival and the cruise contract we all sign before the cruise embarks is binding and gives all the the power to Carnival. If it is true that Carnival was aware of the mechanical issues before the cruise, then I think they should have taken the ship out of service, until the issue was repaired. The gestures of a $400 obc with all Bahama ports is decent, however 100 percent future cruise credit if you disembark is not, because the customers would have to pay lodging and airfare to return to their respective destinations. It would have been refreshing if they would have offered to cover those charges, however it is a billion dollar business and they want every dime. Consider this a lesson for all cruisers, no matter the cruise line, they hold all the power, so prepare for the worst while expecting the best!

i have made 100+ cruises on Carnival ships, so obviously I'm a fan. We sailed on Vista the first week it was in Galveston, and many times after that before it moved ports. I really cannot tell you how many times our itinerary was changed because of propulsion issues. I have to agree that the change in that particular itinerary was really beyond anything tolerable. Most people book a cruise for the chance to go to particular destinations, not for the opportunity to just sail anywhere on a ship. after all, if you book a vacation and buy a ticket to say, Grand Cayman, and they drop you off in Freeport instead, that certainly wouldn't be acceptable. I know itineraries can be changed in emergencies or because of weather, but selling tickets to destinations that a company has a pretty good idea the ship cannot make is indefensible. IMO they should have gotten 1/2 their fare back and a 100% future cruise credit. AND TAKE VISTA OFF THE BLOODY LINE!!

Once they break even and recuperate cost that it took to build, they probably will scrap the ship. There’s nothing that you can really do to the ship to make it better with this kind of issue.

I usually side with the cruise line with issues like this but in this case the itinerary was like a dream cruise and changing it up to go to Nassau or any of the stops in the Bahamas was a complete and under downgrade. I don't think $400 on board credit is a fair compensation. I also think the passengers have lost money in airfare and many people that work can't reschedule because most people only get 2 weeks vacation for the year. The ports in New England and Canada while not tropical are still comparable to Bermuda. Carnival had no business launching this ship until they had the propulsion issue fixed. Cruising the Caribbean is not what I usually book but I know there's tons of people that do but if they had refunded the money, the people on board could have made other plans if their ship was having too many problems

Went on the Vista 2022 and they had propulsion issues at that time. Didn't get to visit the one port I really wanted to visit, but had my itinerary been changed like THIS, I would have been livid. I pick my cruises based on ports I've never visited before and the last place I want to go is to the Bahamas. Worst ports ever! Changed the Aruba, Curacao ports for the Bahamas is like changing from a castle to a hut. It's ridiculous and I understand the pain of the passengers. Vista needs a dry dock and to get these propulsion issues fixed once and for all.

One thing I know for sure, it wasn't Carnival Cruise Line, I never been on that cruise line.

In Dec 2022 our cruise in the Vista ship was canceled 3 days before the sailing due to mechanical issues. Thankfully, we had not flown out to FL yet. It was a nightmare but I think Carnival handled it well. They got us sailing on a different cruise from CA for the same departure day, still gave us credit back, refunded a part of our flight costs & gave us $250 onboard credit per person. It wasn't the tripped we planned, but we were happy in the end.

My wife and I cruise a lot, and yes, we have been on cruises that have been diverter due to weather issues and mechanical issues, and ALL the cruise lines make it quite clear that itineraries are not guaranteed, and you accept that when you go on a cruise. Last October my wife and I did a transatlantic crossing and due to hurricane Tammy, we missed 2 full days in Bermuda, but in return, RCL took us to Halifax, they refunded all of our port fees in full, and did not charge us the port fees for Halifax, and gave us all a 50 dollar per person on board credit, to spend as we wanted to. If we didn't use it, they would give us a 100 dollar voucher toward a future booking, and everyone was quite satisfied with that. It is what it is. Still had a wonderful time.

  • @Synamint87

Personally speaking this ship has had these issues for a long time and continue to become an issue. If they failed to make the repairs so they could swindle people out of their vacation money then that is grounds for a potential lawsuits. The fact the options provided to the customers were garbage is in itself a whole different issue. You can almost never get your money back, they like to force the credit for the next cruise as an option but that is a trap. Cause they figure that the people who take it after having a bad experience will probally not sail again with the liner at which point they lose nothing since the credit is fake money. Then telling people if they want to get said refund they would have to be stranded on an island they have no information on is insane, that is not an option. Personally Carnival should have offered a free flight back to the port of call for passengers wanting to leave due to the complete change in ports of calls.
I get that legally you signed a contract but that contract could be rendered null and void if either party acted in bad faith. Knowing there is a mechanical issue and not premptively changing the sailing before departure is 1 red flag. changing all ports of calls is the second as then the contract you signed for a cruise is 100% different. Then comes red flag number 3 of you can take our half ass offer and get stranded until you figure out a way home or deal with the change. Personally I have slowed down how much i cruise cause of ships breaking down and issues i have faced while on board a carnival ship. I was on the Vista when its propulsion went down a few years back during a hurricane and it was scary as heck.

They need to figure out what is going on with this ship. We were on it in may and we were a little luckier then these people. We were stuck in San Juan until 5AM which cut our next port stop quite a bit shorter. As you said they have been have propulsion issues for a while with the Vista. Regardless if the new port stops may be a more desirable and expensive itinerary, that is not the cruise these people signed up for. Before anyone says the contract says they have the right to do this, it’s still very disappointing.

I sailed this ship knowing that she was having propulsion issues before I sailed. I also signed the cruise contract that talks about missing ports and such. Look, I’m just happy to be on vacation! I get five weeks every year, but I am happy to be on a vacation! This behavior to me is very selfish! But again, that’s just my opinion. You should all be sailing knowing that no matter what cruise line or what ship it is that you may miss a port for one reason or another! It’s time to get over ourselves and appreciate the fact that we have the funds to be able to go cruising, what a blessing!

Truthfully in the travel industry the idea of pay me today for a hamburger tomorrow philosophy reigns. Compensation has always been future based credit of some type. Airlines do the same thing. But true cash refunds are near impossible to attain. This practice as a whole should be reviewed and changed.
