Hi Steve and Happy 4th to you as well, please stay safe!!
So I wanted to let you know that in my grandparent's mansion, the wood looks the same as their's and it was mahogany. I also wanted to tell you that normally the 3rd level of a older mansion is reserved as the servants quarter's, also why at times you find the fixing are not as high quality and you may find a back stairway that the servants were to always use. I also wanted to tell you to not only search for secret panels that leads into secret rooms and you may find that what appears as walls standing out from the main walls behind a fireplace is also where secret rooms can be found, also the fireplace may pull out itself and lead to a secret room. In my grandparent's mansion there were also secret steps on the stair steps and you should look for them as well, they were used to hide valuables/money and alcohol during times of the prohibition period. They can be found on the master staircase and also the servants stairway. I spent every weekend through the school month's there and many weeks in the summer month's...we didn't believe in servants though or maids I know for 3 generations including my own. We did our own cleaning & cooking and because we were from the north we didn't believe in servants. It was a great deal of work, by the time we finished it was time to begin again lol. The servants quarter's were located on the 3rd floor with rooms away from the ballroom floor which was on the 3rd floor as well. I hope this information helps in your future video's!! I believe that there is a good deal of history about Mr Wheeler as well too. Safe traveling to you and your friends!!❤✌

I grew up and lived in Orange for 25 years. I would walk and drive past it daily and I never once saw the inside. In the 1990’s it was called the Eastern Star Home and was a test home for women. Thanks for showing it. It’s beautiful and glad I finally got to see it, even if it wasn’t in its prime.

The problem with old mansions that are reconfigured to serve as hotels, nursing homes, or office space, often floors are added and walls that ruin the original design of the building. It is a shame. I believe that we, here in America, do not honor such beautiful old buildings as much as we should. Great video guys.

    • @contrabbasso76
      @contrabbasso76 2 года назад +1

I think one issue is how we (Americans) view the historical significance of these buildings here. Not as many of them have the same historical relevance as ancient castles/manor homes in Europe. Nor have they stood for as long. In America they are usually connected with locally successful individuals from the gilded age, or built by lottery winners and 6 figure earners (or mafia lol) and are only 10-50 years old. Typically expensive for private owners to maintain, abandoned due to debt/cost, with no interest in making most of them into National/State historic places.
Instead, we visit/revere the boyhood homes of Lincoln, Mark Twain, and Miles Davis. Small and unimpressive structures, reflective of humble beginnings, and painstakingly maintained. I think these are things that Americans can better relate to.
That being said I love these videos. Glad this home found a new owner!

I recognized the star in the elevator floor as being from the Masonic organization called Eastern Star, so did some research and found that in 1925 the mansion was picked up as the Eastern Star Home - rest home for the ladies of the Masonic Lodge. that ended around 1990. There is a lot of history with that mansion! Really enjoyed watching!!

I grew up in Orange. The Wheeler Mansion was also known as the Eastern Star Home. As a child, our church youth group was invited into the Eastern Star Home to sing Christmas carols. The place was BEAUTIFUL!! And the elevator is, from what I recall, original to the home. It was a novelty for the wealthy at that time.

Went to highschool with some kids who lived here. Hasn't really been abandoned very long. Also you should have hit up the Orange historical society for some more historical info on the mansion.
Also I believe the John Wheeler you were taking about is a different person than the one who lived in Orange and built the mansion. The one who built this house as born in Orange and is mostly known for his roles at New Home Sewing Machine Company.

The White House Mansion was amazing. Love the details and architectural design of a 1912 time period. Love fireplaces, they make the room, it gives the rooms their own personality...can't decide a favorite. Mr. Wheeler must've had a fascination for Boats/Ships. This explains the Round Windows which are usually on ships, and the steering wheels, also called the Helm.
Room 17 might have been his office or his private place to unwind. That fireplace was especially designed for him, it even had his initials or his father. The stairs, cherrywood or mahogany? Either way, gorgeous design and details. That last room photo, definitely my favorite. If this room had that awesome initial fireplace, the room would be magnificent. Awesome video Steve definitely worth the wait. Thank you.💕

In early America windows in homes were taxed, doors were not. Many people got around that by having tall windows that went to the floor. These were then considered doors and were, therefore, not taxed. The window you are at at 17:59 though may have just been used as a fire exit.

When you put a model into the picture they become the subject of the shot. When you take a picture of an empty room, it allows the viewer to imagine themselves there. Keep it abandoned 😉 Hope you dish out some more of your epic shots. 🙌🏽

Great location! It was probably unbelievable before being chopped up into smaller rooms. On the top floor where you pointed out the fireplace with stone carved initials, you can tell that with the added wall the proportions are all wrong. It was most likely a grand room with perhaps vaulted ceilings even? The Greek Revival period was all about golden ratios, balance... Wonderful job!

JWW died in this home in 1910. He built the mansion for he and his wife Elmira. Who died in 1920. He willed the property to an Oder of the Ladies related to Freemasonry, which turned it into a nursing home for women. JWW made his money by producing sewing machines. Amazingly the house and property sold for only $150,000 a couple of years ago to someone who is now in the renovation process. I would love to see it after renovations back to a private home. Great showing Steve, love your Vlogs!

Depending on the home for sale sites. This mansion is either up for sale for $98k or it was sold in this year.
Either way it was built in 1903 and updated in 2000. There is also a FB page dedicated to saving the Wheeler Mansion.

Interesting.......a beautiful, huge mansion with no kitchen or even a clue of there ever having been a kitchen. I guess when it was remodeled for a business the kitchen was deleted. When you said about having a "model" it immediately reminded me of a youtube video I watched years ago about abandoned and crumbling antebellum plantation homes in the deep south. The photographer had a pretty, young lady dressed beautifully as she would have been if she were living on a plantation in the south prior to the Civil War. She would randomly appear in the video among the ruins of what must have been a beautiful, huge plantation house (but now crumbling into ruins) and she would be staring stoically out of a busted or cracked window or at the bottom of what used to be a magnificent staircase as if she just came downstairs to a plantation ball and looking lovingly at a long stemmed red rose in her hand. She might be on one of the formerly magnificent porches staring out as if overlooking the daily operations of the plantation. The use of this model brought to mind what "used to be" and is now gone forever with the model looking as if she were thinking about and possibly missing those wonderful days of the past, surrounded by the ruins of what once was. The same could be done with any abandoned building of any time period with the proper attire for that time period being worn by the model. I can imagine a model, dressed for the proper time period of this mansion in it's heyday, coming down that beautiful ornate wooded staircase for an evening of dinner and dancing with a group of friends or standing in front of a large window looking forlornly out of that window. The possibilities are endless, limited only by your imagination! Makes for some beautifully haunting photos that makes ones mind travel back to those times trying to imagine what the home and it's residents would have been like at that time.

Oh, I love your thinking, you just sent me into a fantasy world of the homes I've been in and thought the same way. The old farmhouses you could have an young woman in the time period clothing with apron at the sink with a dish and dishrag washing the dish as she peered out the window as would have been once long long ago.....

@@sherryannhailey6596 Been there, done that. I remember preparing threshing meals for our neighbors/distant relatives and carrying them across the road because they still had a wood stove and a pump at the sink. But they had a huge freezer in the summer kitchen for the produce from the large garden. It was a strange juxtaposition.

I have a personal question. Do you have another job, or is this how you make a living? If this is your main source of income, I can't think of a better job!! Also as a former medic in the US Army I do have one very important piece of advice. You REALLY REALLY need to wear a mask with 3 or 4 filters while on these locations. I'm not sure but I think the attic you climbed into had asbestos insulation. Please be careful. Love your work. Also happy 4th to you also.

Each biblical figure is represented by a color on each of the star's 5 points.

People with money and influence today just don't see the point of preserving stuff like that, which is of rare beauty and value, and couldn't be reproduced now, or expected to be in the foreseeable future. It says something about most of the moneyed elite that houses like that one, or any number of magnificent train stations and old school buildings run to seed and demolished, are allowed to rot, while restoring them would in many cases be the most effective and inexpensive way of improving the general standard of living for everyone, by way of informing them on what real artistry and architecture is all about, through seeing it for themselves. I think the elite today are selected for stupidity, and the "selecting forces" have been at this kind of thing - with the aim of lowering the general standard of living - for a long time. It's a little bit of each: the intellectual incompetence of the direct actors, combined with the malevolence of the ones who put them where that are, and it's readily comparable to the recent destruction and "public" decisions to remove great heritage and artistic achievement in the form public statues. It is a way of gypping future generations.
