In this week's episode, we are inside a historical chateau in France. A very royal building from the outside which surprised us when we walked in. Everything was left inside and we found some fascinating stuff, have a look along with us and enjoy watching this video!

Jethro, probably thieves would give the items a second life. Have u seen how
abandoned homes have rotted over time with animals and weeds and rain have destroyed nice homes. It’s just a matter of time before everything there rots away. It’s only been 15 years, but in due time leaks and other damages can happen. Then the outer elements destroy it. It’s actually better if someone preserved these wonderful pieces before it’s wrecked.

@@aljeansp True. I was thinking the same. I'm sure they won't film themselves taking a souvenir. I'd just like to think whatever they do take, they truly admire and appreciate. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
I'm really glad you guys go up close to fabrics, carvings (the details) and pause so we can see. That is when you can see the true quality of decor.

I thought you guys were from Belgium, guess that's Bros of Decay. My sister lives in Almere, Netherlands. She initially moved to Lelystad 20 yrs ago! I would give more, but I am only getting $117/wk on unemployment and because of Covid-19, returning back to work has been delayed a couple wks. Plus, I figure if we all give a little....it will add up. ❤️
Additionally, I think your video skills are excellent. I don't know about equipment, but I think yours does the job. Ha, ha, ha....that could be taken wrong way, sorry. I DO have a sense of humor.
Your command of the English language needs improvement and presentation could improve, but you guys are young and doing GREAT! Don't be hard on yourselves. It took my sister almost 20 years to reach University level Dutch. I visited her after 9-11, over the New Year 2001-2002, when the euro was instituted. I thought her Dutch was great then. She said it sucked. Anyhow, you guys are the best. My favorites are Explomo, Bros of Decay and Exploring with Josh.
MR Definitely! All bits help! Lelystad is a 2/3 hour drive from us in Maastricht (the southest city of the Netherlands). Hope you can get back to work again as soon as possible and times will get better :)

Thousands of dollars worth of antiques just being left to rot. All that beautiful carved wood, that would be a great place to restore.
I was thinking the same thing. I would love to salvage that place.
I've seen a similar video on YT with guys exploring a huge villa in Japan. There a 6tatmi room is already quite expensive and that guy had rooms where you could play soccer in! -except for the fact that they were still filled to the brim with things that should be in a museum (Renaissance paintings and statues from the 18th c, Chinese porcelain, crystal glass, Persian carpets...). Due to an earthquake, many things fell over or down and the roof got damaged so that now water is damaging the things. Things, where probably one room alone would be enough to pay all my debts and allow me to live without working for many years!

Whenever I watch one of these I find myself trying to imagine what the very last person was thinking and feeling when they walked out and locked that front door for the very last time. Was it just an estate agent, or an owner planning to return when times got better? BTW, I looked up that medication and it's for migraine headaches.

I think about that as well. I also think of the proud craftsman that were there when it was being finished. Or the day a painting on a wall was still wet and painter and owner had conversation about the details over tea brang to them by the maid or cook.
Wish we knew history of the owners, if property is still in their names and why they left everything.

@Angela G Many of them are left because any heir dies and those that could take over have 0 idea of the value and fear that accepting the heritage would cost more in maintenance and you can also inherit debts, etc. Living in such a chateau is pretty expensive, not just regarding electricity and maintenance, but also yearly tax!
It's also a lot of work of dissolving a big household and you'd need multiple experts to judge the value of the items and find buyers and assess the maintenance on the building itself before it can be resold if that's even possible. In the worst case, you're stuck with an uninhabitable place, where you have to pay 1million per year!
In a few cases, it was that the owners had to flee (mostly from the law, but occasionally a catastrophe, such as the land becoming toxic, or an earthquake rendering the home unstable).
@@edi9892 if The Inheritance is split equally between 3 people it becomes impossible to sell unless all 3 agree to sell it all it takes is one mental case to block the sale
I get goosebumps while holding my breath as you go room by room. I want to cry sometimes to see such history and beauty just ... left. Absolutely beautiful house I hope it will be cleaned and another family live there.
Taxes, taxes, this is the reason so many of these buildings are abandoned. How can you do the repairs and renovations when the taxes are so high? Reduce taxes on the properties in France, allow them to be occupied and restored. In a century you will see a legacy to France with restored historical buildings. Or, abandoned wasteland with structures not fit for habitation and an eyesore for the French government.
Gloria Hanes wish the government would listen to you. Such a shame for these magnificent homes to be left to decay and eventually fall down into a pile of ruble
The taxes are deliberate it's part of a system that has been used for centuries with the purpose of dismantling all the old world architecture. The buildings go into ruin due to the high taxation and then there is "cause" or "reason" to tear them down for "safety" or "land redevelopment" etc.

Property taxes in France are very low in comparison to the USA.
Gloria, property taxes in France are low. But paying the qualified craftmen able to properly maintain and restore that kind of buildings is out of price. You can buy castles for the price of a new appartement here, but I will cost you ten time more to restore it.
Whatever, very often when that kind of buildings are left all furnished, it is because of a succession problem (might be a tax succession problem ;) )
This would resale at a very good price on the real estate market seeing how well preserved it is. This just needs a little bit of paint and maintenance, even the furniture just needs cleaning... Easiest place to restore out of what I've seen on the market. And I love Manoirs with that gothic architecture. This is quite a rare find, wish they just sold it instead of letting it there...

It's probably a probate issue. I've heard it's a nightmare process in France that leaves properties abandoned and families unable to gain access. It's tragic. Such a beautiful house.

Had to have been an upscale bed & breakfast. There were monogrammed towels with what looked like the chateau on them, plus the room numbers... and the first clue was the office area/desk with printer in the foyer.
I have a question: I'm curious as to why anyone would abandon these beautiful homes and leave so many things of value behind , I do love watching your videos the homes are so beautiful!!
Places like these are a dime a dozen too the wealthy elite.What your average working class individual deam expensive is pocket change to them.I assume when money is no object and your able to buy anything your heart desires in life.Nothing probably hold the same value or meaning it would for those of us who have to work for them.As appose to having everything handed too you.
@@theworldisastageexitright4288 Sometimes it's the opposite. I dated someone who grew up in a castle in Ireland that had been in the family for generations. She told me how much of the castle had no electricity while growing up for reasons such as costs and perhaps needing rewiring(she told of extension leads gradually snaking through more and more of the place over time), and while being titled (a Lady) one might imagine the family would be super well off, that wasn't the case. The cost of upkeep for these places is immense, and a residence could easily spiral into decline from being unable to even make repairs and maintain its current state let alone improve it.
It can be a question of inheritance, the last owner died and we can't find the legal inheritor so the castle stay abandonned.

Yes you're right. Most of them need roofing repair or replacement & cost is immense. Once the roofs give way water ruins the rest of the building & they fill with mold. Sometimes a simile simple roof repair would've saved these but it cost too much. Sad to see such beauty fall apart.
So many people homeless and needy is a shame the government should take these properties repair them and convert them into NH, retirement homes or hotels it will be a source of employment for people and benefit the disabled or elders that cannot take care of themselves.
Truly a beautiful house and a similar layout to a museum in Paris that my husband and I visited last year. The dining room is meant to be dark and allow only dim light to protect the wall tapestry. The dishes with a Japan mark on them are not cheap crockery but a collector's find.

"Magical" is truly the right word for this castle! The wood trim, the 3 D faces coming out above the doors, the floors, the chandeliers, the beautiful, beautiful staircase!! Going by the hairdryers in the bathrooms, I would hazard that its a chateau that was converted into a hotel. That might also explain the garden chairs in the blue drawing room and the main dining room on the ground floor. The kitchen also looks as if it was used for catering as well. Pity though... great job guys! keep it up and be safe!!

There's a channel by Michael Platherac who is restoring a chateau like this and they restored the panels and wooden steps - huge project but they are getting it done. Lots of woodwork like this. I think it's diy Chateau
I just can't imagine what happened to the inhabitants. I can picture someone sitting at that table unwinding the Christmas lights. The medication is for migraine headaches. The decor is not what one expects from the exterior shot. The wood carving looks almost like Henri II and Diane de Poitiers. Those Italian garden chairs are great and so is that recumbent boar sculpture. Great job.
Great Video 10/10..That Wall Tapestry was Amazing all hand sewn, It would have taken so long. The furnishings, Ornaments, fireplaces, chandeliers were all exquisite. The numbered rooms were maybe for guests of the family. I really hope someone saves these items and the mansion. Thank you both. This was one of the most beautiful houses you have ever shown. Beautiful architecture, details, furniture .... it is well preserved and if the family invites the relatives to clean it up and use it again, this house would certainly bring good happy moments to people. Too bad you haven't finished showing all the other rooms in the house.

There was another one too very beautiful,got less damages,the things nd furniture are still in very good shape,bathrooms nd toilets are numerous nd color coded nd a number of pianos for each storey black,amber nd ocre..that was owned by a Spanish professor? a certain Miguel...that mansion was was so cool
It looks like it could have been a small hotel or Inn since there were numbers on the doors AND, there were towels with a logo in the bathrooms, which had a picture of the building on them. The bed that you said would have had curtains is a canopy bed. Mirrors in hotels, homes, offices, etc. are used to make the rooms seem bigger kind of like an optical illusion. It looked like maybe the family lived there & rented out the rooms, could have been something in the paperwork on the desk at the base of the stairs. Beautiful place! 💜👩🇺🇲
I thought since there were personal items left in the bathrooms that it may have been rooms rented out.
The kitchen was a professional one so I had the same thought, also with the numbers on the doors, blowdryer in the bathroom ... perhaps a retreat?
I thought the rooms with the numbers might have been guest rooms - the lady of the house would have had the maid take a guest to a particular room by number!!! Can never be sure though.

Love the dining room especially the carved wooden cabinets and the tapestries. The numbered bedrooms and the similar design of the bathrooms make me think that they did try to make money by doing B&B or something as these huge old houses cost a lot to maintain. Great job again you two.
Thank you for this! I have a fascination with old chateaus / castles 🏰 and neo gothic architecture. There is something magical in old buildings and something creepy but alluring about abandoned ones. I can just picture myself walking around dreaming of restoring this building to its full glory with items from the past to bring it to life ! X

11:22 known as an engraving or print (lithograph), 11:54 wooden profile of 1st occupant over door. Bed n Breakfast (7) and (8) rooms were rented at one time before the couple retired and used it as a residence only. The dolls were popular during the 1970's - 1990's, those who collected porcelain reproduction dolls now are out of favor among Millenials. 26:18 Barney was a child's program popular in the 1990's.

I’m sure ppl live in abandoned places to save money. They can buy a nice car. Pay membership to a gym where they can take showers. Then they buy food that doesn’t need refrigeration. Then go out to eat with the money they save. Not too shabby!

Fantastic chateau!! I just adore all the lovely woodwork and the paintings within. I can imagine how beautiful this chateau would have been while still inhabited. I adore your videos and would LOVE to accompany you guys through such a lovely house one day. If this chateau was ever in the U.S. it would have been completely vandalized. How brilliant it is that you're able to locate and enter these fantastic, majestic chateaus and take us along on your journey. Gentlemen this one is very beautiful absolutely love it and I think those concrete chairs somebody brought them from outside I'm assuming because they don't go with the rest of the decor in the house but other than that great job again
on my bucket list this year, is to tour France to find the perfect chateau to purchase, and restore back to its former glory. This place is absolutely stunning.

Hi Maureno and Remon, Explomo, A really amazing location, you found to explore in France! - It seems to be a very typical smaller french
château, that was used later on as a smaller country side hotel, especially if you consider the amount of bathrooms and toilets on the upper
floors. - I have once been in a wonderful very ancient manor house/ hotel in Ireland. - So I really think this might very well be possible.
The interior in the main floor still holds some original furniture and fittings as I assume, when watching your video. Especially beautiful
were the wood carvings on the old furniture in the living room and grand dining room. There in the room, where this unique monumental
painting was visible you were admiring the elaborate textile wall fittings. - I think, these are also still original embroideries. - Of course I also

Wicker furniture was invented when a surplus of huge quantities of the wicker were left on the docks in Boston. They were used as ballasts on ships and discarded. A man living there decided it try to make furniture from the material and the next thing you know....everyone wanted some.

This house is in pretty decent condition, it is sad that no one is taking responsibility for it.

Love this place. Love all of the wood cabinets. I love how the cabinets and windows and the doors go all the way up. All the antiques are just gorgeous. I would love to have this place
It's actually renovated. I've stayed there twice already. Just came back from a week long vacation in this Chateau yesterday.
I love the videos best when you guys are a team together, which l realize may not always be possible. I prefer Morena operating the camera because of his skill at showing detail close up. Also he captures ceilings! Also l love seeing every cabinet, drawer, closet etc. Wonderful videos you guys. The Covid19 has been less in focus while l watch them. Thanks for great beautiful work!!

I can't get over how in all this time, the wall paper is pristine - the weather has not ruined things - the roof must still be in very good shape. I think the servants lived on the top floor
I enjoyed watching but wish we could have seen the rest of the 3rd floor and possibly the cellar. You guys did great job and very respectful as you check out the mansion. Sometimes you can view some spaces less slowly so you can have more time to view some of the other spaces you don’t ever get to show.

Wow, the Barney room brought back memories! My son had a Barney room with that bedspread. We even had the goose pillow that was on the bed. Gorgeous place, as I often do I can't help but wonder why it is empty!
Safe to say the inhabitants before abandonment were Italians. The books, the etching in the dining hall but mainly, the empty Pannetone boxes in the kitchen !! 😊😊
Actually Pannetone arepopular outside Italy. Just here in canada (whereI live) people buy these cakes during hollidays. You find them everywhere

Stunning! The carved cabinets and woodwork downstairs were amazing. Partial to blues so really liked the hallways. Stairway magnificent. Love when you can look up/down various levels.
Wonder if at some point they had a small hotel and then converted back to home. Indirect lighting in bathrooms definitely an upgrade but easy to install in a soffit as they did. And if you had that big a house and the money, wouldn’t you have a bathroom with every bedroom? Haha.
The bluish ceiling light in one of the upstairs halls-that would go lovely in my bedroom ☺️.

Can you imagine how much it would cost to hand carve the stunning art work on the mantle's and book shelves in this castle. I think this would make a wonderful Bed & Breakfast hotel. The Weddings and Honeymoon's ext. would pay for the up keep and the review instead of leaving it sit idle. Stunning.

I love everything about the baby-blue room and the drapes. Great dining room with the fabric covered walls and the dark wood. All the striped wallpapers. The blue bathroom is good looking. I love the peach colored bathroom and the wooden shades in the windows. Gorgeous bedroom at 25:23. Thank you for sharing.
