  • Nothing will keep Louisa from searching for an ancient fortune. Except perhaps a phantom who turns out to be a most eligible bachelor.

When Louisa Banner's mother announces they are poor, she cannot help her misgivings when her mother sends her away to live with her great aunt in a tiny, Northumberland village. Louisa's aunt also happens to live near the ruins of an ancient castle. Although Louisa insists she is not the least bit superstitious, tales of lost treasure and ghosts intrigue her.
When Louisa stumbles upon a forgotten graveyard, and a man whose name comes directly from a tombstone, she isn’t certain whether to run away in terror or stay and get to know the handsome spirit.
Erasmus Grey is cursed, and not only because he sometimes hears the voices of ghosts claiming to be his dead grandparents. While most men would count it a blessing to be a wealthy, eligible bachelor, Ras has no hope of finding a bride who will tolerate his stammer or his passion for writing Gothic novels.
Rather than succumb to the matchmaking mothers of London, he retreats to an old family estate at the behest of the ghostly voices. Though he manages to keep his presence in the country a secret, coming upon a lovely young woman during one of his rambles nearly undoes all his careful work. But when he realizes Miss Banner thinks him a ghost, Ras wonders if he might have found someone who truly understands him.
Treasures, castles, and ghosts combine in an autumn romance in a haunted wood.

As a child (about 9 or 10) my older brother and I wander about in woods…we even came upon an old forgot cemetery. My brother step, where the earth gave way too. He thought he lost his shoe. That was pretty creepy! It was up in the mountains in town called grass valley in California! We were visiting our adopted grandma, she was my dads brother in law mom. She was awesome! There were quite a few abandoned silver mines up there. We even came across one of those also. I’m glad I told my brother not go pick around in there. But it was fun to explore as a kid. That was long ago! 👍👍

Perhaps woods in England are different than here in Canada, where the tangle of underbrush combined with hurricane fallen pine trees make the woods impenetrable. I have only to look at my trail cam pictures to see the wildlife using my front path includes coyotes and black bears. While extra caution is needed in the spring and early summer, by late October the animals are no longer hungry or protecting cubs. I can’t imagine a city girl feeling safe wandering around the woods though.
Thank you for making this story available. It was a little bit of needed refuge in a new troubled world. I enjoyed it very much whilst sewing and cleaning up.

My childhood home backed into woods. They were my favorite place to wander up into my teens when we moved.
However we moved to a very very haunted beach condo with 100 yr old craggly oak trees draped in Spanish moss. I didn't wander there. Bad vibes. I once asked a psychic how many spirits lived in my haunted condo where doors closed on their own and my sister and I had nightmares. She replied... 18.

Answer to the author: I grew up surrounded by wooded mountains in southern West Virginia. I spent uncountable hours traipsing through the woods alone, and I generally take the "road less traveled" when given the choice. 😊 Just a note about the book... It was another night spent so that I could finish. I loved it as I have loved every book of yours that I have listened to, grateful for your generosity at sharing your books in audio for free. I was hesitant at first to listen to this because I get scared easily so haunting tales are usually a no no for me. However, because of your decorum with your other audio books, which I've listened to, I gave this one a shot. Your handling of the subject didn't disappoint. It wasn't over-the-top with Halloween references but understated, emphasizing instead the mystery that tales of long ago conjure and the beauty of Autumn with its colors and the deep hued attire of cool weather. The ghost pair were endearing and even funny! I love the back and forth banter of the Scotsman Erasmus and his wife Elizabeth. Well done!

Sally, I have to admit I left this story of yours till last because I'm not drawn to haunted or ghost type stories. BUT, what a surprise, I'm so glad I didn't pass it by! First of all, I'm from NY but moved to Northumberland to marry my British husband and I was so excited to hear you based your tale there! How many times we've gone to Harbottle, threw stones in that river (Devil's Elbow) and admired the wildflowers there, although I think it's a private campground now. We've hiked up to the Drake stones several times and had marvelous views and yes the lake is just behind it.I did some sketching on our walk up there. My husband told me the tales of people passing children over or through a certain rock...can't remember the details now I'll have to ask him.
The old castle ruins are situated on steep banks and make an interesting explore. You also mentioned Holystone, I couldn't believe it. That is a very special place to us, it's very peaceful and has a huge rectangular pool of the freshest spring water ever. It's a very old site, going back further even than the first Christians and there used to be a nunnery there too. We have an elderly lady friend who lives in that village still, she's a retired shepherdess and is 92!
We now live in the Scottish Borders but only about an hour and half away so we'll be back. A few notes about how some things were pronounced by the narrator, you learn in the UK that local places have their own way of pronouncing names! Alnwick, mentioned early in the story, is actually said like "Annick", also the river Coquet is pronounced like "Coquette or Co-ket" and it's the prettiest river valley I've ever seen!
Please think about visiting those places you only saw on Google earth, you will love them all. The coastline and beaches in the area are superb also! Check out Bamburgh castle, Edlingham castle (we lived right near it), too many places to mention!
ps. I loved the story too, the characters were great! Loved the ghosts too, that part reminded me of one of those cheerful old movies you see with friendly ghosts in them.

I am absolutely GOBSMACKED that you know Harbottle!!! Oh my goodness. While I wrote this, I followed the renovation of the public house on Facebook. I studied dozens of maps from the 17th and 18th century. I read so many tourism guides, even some from the early 1800's, that mentioned the Drake Stone! This is amazing. I am so excited that you've been there, and seen the things I so wanted to see! I spent so much time using Google Street View to wander the town and lanes leading to it. Incredible. I am thoroughly jealous of you, and so pleased, too! Northumberland doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves in fiction. :-) I'm glad you didn't mind my ghosts. I tell everyone it isn't a scary book, but the word "Haunting" does tend to throw people. Of course, having been there, you know where I took liberties. This is lovely! Thank you so much for telling me all about it.

@@AuthorSallyBritton You seriously deserve a trip there. We live in a beautiful place now but we both still talk about all our favorite walks in Northumberland. Any natives there always joke and say to "keep it a secret" about how beautiful it is! Truly! It's very very easy to find B+B's to stay at. There are the Cheviot hills to explore or the un-crowded beaches and clear footpaths everywhere. It's a great trip for families too just in case you have kids. Let me know if you ever do take a trip there, my husband and I could give you ideas of where to go. There's a country fair at Alwinton too, wasn't that in the book too? Some of the most gorgeous hills there! All I know after all the research you did it deserves a reward, go to Northumberland!

I would definitely wander around the woods and I have done so many times. I have a cabin near the woods and 3/4 mile behind it is a lake. One night I took my dog with me through the woods to the lake and as I sat down on the bank fog began to roll in slowly covering the lake like a blanket. It was one of the most beautiful sights I ever saw ,and a little unnerving at the same time as the need to return to my cabin before the fog managed to obscure our path back. I Loved this story but I'm finding I enjoy all of your stories so far. You can use that little bit of information in one of your books if you like I certainly don't plan on writing a book. I think there was a half moon shining at the time as I remember the trees being shiny with light. It was magical.

I have been in places like that, with feelings like that. We have a boat we take to our lake nearby, and it's always magical. We've been on the water in fog, in rain (not lightning!), and on days when the water is so still it looks like someone covered the lake in a thin silken fabric. Nature always transports my imagination to faraway times and places. I hope you have many more such lovely experiences in the woods.

I loved this book. I dont know if I can convey my thoughts as they are properly to you. Especially my enthusiasm in hearing all that you wrote for this book. I enjoyed the characters emencely, while I felt like I was a ghost myself and watching these amazing characters come to an empass. I took a few notes. I hope your not starting to panic that I am a writer. I am not. One aspect was I related to Louisa. I'm from a similar background as her. Only important to her mother when needed then simply shoved aside. Amoung other things. Like how her mother was out in society to find a man to marry herself. However, thus proved to be for Louise's benefit. Strange how it all works out in the end. Secondly, the ghosts were present for so much of this budding romance and they both encouraged to look past society or standing for something more. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I happened to stumble about your RUclips channel and now I am a subscriber. Thank you for your notes at the end of your books. I truly enjoy that. It gives me a mind's eye about and your thoughts. I usually don‘t like ghost storys and it took me a while to get into the Story, but I‘m so glad I continued listening. They were such a charming caring young couple, and you showed perfectly how and why their affection for another grew, instead of these toxic oversexualised jealous cliches, especially historical romances often like to use. The characters also feeled realistic, and so did their actions. neither pseudo historically naive/block headed, nor anachronisticly modern, neither always socially correct, nor constantly having a bad concience about it, but also not being oblivious about it.
This Is how comfort literature should be like. I will definitely come back to this audiobook.

(5:13:19) Sigh.... spoiler - such a sweet part when she came to Erasmus' defense at the dinner and then they sing a duet and forgot everyone else - sigh... so swoon-worthy! I loved it! awww - only an hour left - I don't want this to end! I love this story.
Sigh - Such a good story. I loved it - every minute - even the - spoiler - ghosts... I am usually a huge snob about fictional stories being as true to life as possible and historically accurate - but the way these ghosts were written and the way they were entwined into the story worked and made me love them as much as I loved Erasmus and the main female character. Of all of Sally Britton's books, this is my favorite!

For me the ghosts was there to bring Ras and Louisa together, that they knew they would be a good gouple. The ghosts could have shown up earlier or later in Ras family but they picked him. They also didn't seem to be in a hurry and poke their nose into the matter about Louisa than anything else.
The key to find what was hidden was to understand the people who hid it in the first place. My guess is that neither Ras or Louisa would have found tresure alone.
Odd name for a kitten, how did you come up with that? Giggled when she attacked Louisa's skits and ran off, so typical for a playful cat.
Thank you for sharing your great story

I am so glad you enjoyed it! And yes, the ghosts were certainly there in large part because of Louisa and Ras. :-) And that kitten! Thyme is an herb, of course, but in the middle-ages it symbolized courage. I thought it an apt name for a kitten who had already survived so much at such a young age. So did Louisa. :-)
