  • Dr. W. Thomas Boyce is a pediatrician and Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco. His research addresses individual differences in children's biological susceptibility to social contexts, such as the family, classroom and community. His work, which has generated over 200 scientific publications, demonstrates that a subset of children ("orchid children") show exceptional biological sensitivity to their social environments and bear higher risks of illness and developmental disorders in settings of adversity and stress.
Taken together, findings from his research suggest that the supportiveness of early environments have important effects on all children's health and well-being and are the subject of his recently published book entitled The Orchid and the Dandelion: Why Some Children Struggle and How All Can Thrive.
Previously, Dr. Boyce was Associate Dean for Research in the UC Berkeley School of Public Health and the BC Leadership Chair in Child Development at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. He co-directs the Child and Brain Development Program for the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, is a member of the JPB Foundation Research Network on Toxic Stress in Children, serves on the Board on Children, Youth and Families of the National Academies of Science, and was elected in 2011 to the National Academy of Medicine.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Just hearing about this gives me so much ease. I'm definitely an orchid that was raised in the cracks of a sidewalk... needless to say I've not been doing great. This validates and soothes me on a profound level. Seriously man, I can't put into words what you did for me today. THANK YOU ❤🤍🤎💜💙💚💛🧡❤
I'm actually a physician lol. Getting half a mind to contact you in professional regard. Not sure if my choice of vocation has been a compensation for my anxieties though. But if I were to stay in medicine, this would be very high on my list of what I'd like to work on. Probably highest.
Love you Dr. W. Thomas Boyce :)

This explains so much about my bed-sharing, sensitive toddler. She has needed me day and night (has woken nearly hourly) since she was a young infant and having this understanding of her needs helps me to have more compassion for her struggle.

Saw this in person and he is amazing at what he does and it’s oddball to say two things I’ve had challenges in my life, so yeah, I am an orchid in my opinion and number two and the most important. The author of the book is actually my uncle.❤

How did your family treat you growing up? Do you think they were highly nurturing? I am currently raising an orchid myself. She is a lot but I am trying to respect her as much as my mental health can handle. Any advice for me?

Excellent talk overall and a concept I very much agree with. I think there may be two errors which are worth noting to ensure the important messages aren't lost or confused:
11:16 "The dandelion children are those who showed the pattern of high reactivity..." should be "the orchid children..."
14:02 "So what allows a dandelion child to thrive?" should be "So what allows an orchid child to thrive?" (the point of this is that dandelion children are more likely to thrive in many or most conditions anyway. It is *specifically* the orchid children that benefit most from higher levels of support and the 'right' environments.

I have long thought that there are massive overlaps between orchids, HSPs (highly sensitive people), academically 'gifted' people, and those on the Autistic Spectrum. The latter of which is far, far wider than is currently generally understood - there is a whole generation who have felt 'different' their wholes lives but have never understood why. In many of these groups there is an exquisitely sensitive wiring (in 'gifted' speak, this is described as part of 'Dabrowski's Overexcitibilities' (or OEs)), especially to sensory input (which would have a knock-on effect to neurotransmitter production and therefore behaviour).
These are not different traits - they are one and the same, simply viewed through different lenses. In addition, I think certain genetic 'mutations' (e.g. the MTHFR gene) and the gut microbiome play a major part too and will impact the epigenetics. It'll be interesting to see what future research uncovers. Here's hoping researchers start to join the dots.

Being HSP is 100% separate from being autistic and also being gifted. It’s something that’s observed in many other animals studied not just humans. Autism is also not genetic at all and no one is born with autism. I see people say this all the time that because autistic people are often gifted and over reactive to stimulus and are thinking a lot that there’s some connection. It’s complete nonsense. Plenty of people are sensitive and not autistic like myself lol. Anyone can become autistic which like you said has a lot to do with gut bacteria. Please stop spreading misinformation thanks
Please stop making things up thanks

Yes. Being an Orchid is also heavily correlated with being an Introvert on Myers Briggs (70% of them are Introverts according to Elaine Aron), being a 5 or 4 on the Enneagram and being a Melancholic in the Classical Temperaments

    • @rochellecampbell5558
      @rochellecampbell5558 2 года назад +2

@@HamPilgrimBL Agreed. I'm an INFP (I think we make up around 5% of the population apparently). Every single INFP I know also considers themselves to be HSP, an empath, or an orchid. All are also on the Autism Spectrum, and gifted. And it's those of us (like you and me, and others) that can see all the overlaps - who are also natural pattern finders. We're often able to join the dots that others can't even see.

We are living in a time of resurgent disregard for the worlds most vulnerable. Thanks doc, someone needs to address the elephant in the room. Matthew 18:6 If anyone causes one of these little ones-those who believe in me-to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

The quality of your Orchids is the quality of your civilization. If Orchids don't have better life outcomes than Dandelions, you know you're living in a failing society/civilization.

Yeah, it's written in a really dry, academic style. My sister recommended it to me because she and I are both orchids, and I can think of many people I've known who likely were too. Unfortunately, I can't recommend the book to most of them because of that difficult writing style. I wish there was a simpler, "for dummies" version.

@@asrexproductions I've read it too. The book I read before that, 'The Highly Sensitive Person' by Dr Elaine Aron, has strong parallels between orchid and highly sensitive people (HSPs). I've personally found it really helpful as she has more of a coaching style with practical suggestions and exercises. There is still research in the book so some parts may have scientific terms, but overall I would highly recommend it.
There is also an hour-long documentary (Sensitive The Movie) if you prefer visuals to words. Hope this helps you both
