In high school I started wearing a blazer. For the first week I was getting weird looks. But after that, complements started flowing through and I was known as the most dapper guy in class. That was a massive confidence boost!

I get weird comments about how I dress sometimes. I work in IT, and most of my colleagues dress pretty casually. Even if I'm dressing casually, but just raising the bar a bit, I'll get odd comments. But, as Antonio said, it comes with the territory, and I'm dressing the way I want to.

I used to work for IBM. There were two distinct types of people there: those who were well-dressed, personable, well-groomed, and hated using Lotus notes, and those who look liked they'd showered in Mountain Dew, threw on last week's track pants and 10 year old sneakers, couldn't hold a conversation without saying something awkward or rude, and kept Lotus notes running. So glad they dissolved our department 🤦🤣

Ironic, I was sitting at lunch in school today wearing a polo, jeans, and leather boat shoes. I looked around and realized everyone else at my table was wearing basketball shorts, sweatpants and under armor shirts... gave myself a mental pat on the back for that one.

Adam R -- I once commented to my then high school aged son why would students be up in arms about having to wear a uniform at school. They wear one every day. He said, _"No they don't!"_ I said, _"Yes they do. Jeans, t-shirt, and athletic shoes. Even the girls."_ My son said I had no idea what I was talking about because everyone was wearing something different. So I said, _"That one is wearing a save the environment _*_t-shirt_*_ and the other is wearing a Nintendo _*_t-shirt_*_ along with faded jeans and white athletic shoes."_ He couldn't see the similarities as being a uniform. Still can't.

I am currently in high school and try my best to dress nice while everyone still dresses in a very inappropriate manor so I'm trying to up my wardrobe to make an even greater impression on style. The central plain ivory straps look real nice.

in high school, nothing is inappropriate if its casual .. you dont have to dress nice to get anywhere in high school, school is nothing than a test for thelife that comes later.

Christian Johnson manner* there's no point in dressing up in high school. It won't impress anyone, and it won't look good. You'll look like someone who just wants to impress people and fails. Dress how you want, and let others do that too.

With respect to people getting used to the new style ... I went out and dramatically changed my look, regularly wearing suits, sports coats, the bow tie, fedora, nice shoes ... really going for that classic look. And it is amazing what you can find at thrift and vintage stores for cheap - you can find great stuff at rock bottom prices. At first, people were shocked, but Antonio is right ... they've accepted it ... and now even comment if I don't wear the matching hat! Definitely have gotten all kinds of positive comments on the new and improved look ... even had a cop stop in his cruiser and say out of his window that he loved the old school Fedora ... this channel has certainly helped me present a more positive image style-wise ... and the compliments from the ladies don't lie ;)

Brian Rookard i remember when i first started doing it towards the end of university. it was just way too weird. i looked weird and i felt weird. fast forward and the only time i dont dress up is to do leisure activities. i feel super comfortable with nice shoes, dress shirts and a coat. if i had more money then i would buy a set that i've made for myself. it's more on the business casual side; darkish navy blue floral shirt, dark blue denim jeans (could use a chino instead), light brown leather shoes and belt (cant remember if suede or not), with a tan sport jacket with a matching hat. not sure on the tie, maybe a striped red, and yellow with the black? i was also thinking a paisley pocket square? the tie and pocket square can be experimented with but the shirt, jacket and pant just work great from what i was thinking.

Well,I must say that for the last few months I've gone from tshirt, baggy mom jeans and sneakers,to well, button ups, blazzers chinos, mostly fitted, one week ago picked my first suit from the tailor. And I must say I am really proud of starting this journey of style,I do get compliments but also a lot of "bullying" and a lot of "why dont you wear confortable clothing, somenthing more casual" and I ussualy brush them off.Anyway,RMRS was the first channel and one of the most usefull I've ever had for style tips.I am still missing a lot of things like some sweaters cardigans, some more sport jackets,a nice watch, shirt garters(cant find anywhere here in Romania, will save up for KKnJay) but for now,I am set. Thanks a lot for the great work and for changing peoples lives :)

    • @brianrookard

I have made an absolute KILLING at thrift and vintage stores ... bought brand new Allen & Edmond shoes for $70 ... found some brand new Johnston & Murphy's for $20 ... great wool suits for $12, or $40. It's insane what you can find used (or even new or barely worn) at these stores. For some reason, men just either don't wear it, give it away, or whatever. Hey, their loss is my definite gain. I don't think I ever want to buy a new suit again when I can easily find used clothing that can be easily altered. It takes some looking around, but it can be done. The harder part is to find used dressed shirts that are in decent condition ... it can be done, that's the one thing that I am more likely to buy new ... but you can EASILY find used suits in great condition, and then just have them adjusted/tailored to fit you.

    • @TheDynamiteRO
      @TheDynamiteRO 7 лет назад +2

      You tell me :))) I just got last month a 100% wool for 2 bucks,yesterday a very nice brown vest,nice fit,10 cents :))

Andrei Florea Andrei Florea hey man it's part of the game, don't worry about the bullying, I take it as a compliment, besides you get a ton more attention from the people you like, it seems you've already made the clothes work for your body type as you mentioned a tailor, keep it up man Its good to see another person who's well dressed
I got the same problem, admittedly when I dress more casual I dress in a very unusual way for my area, I get bugged almost daily about it, but the amount compliments I get from the people I like far out weighs anything else. Some women even find me much more attractive, which is a plus

  • @timonie
    @timonie 7 лет назад +23

I'm a 22 year old university student and A LOT of the other students and all of my friends dress the typical t-shirt & jeans kind of way. I nearly always wear dress shirts and sports coats to university, sometimes a little more casual with sneakers or a polo, somtimes a little more dressed up with a nice vest. It honestly is the best thing to do for me, I get SO MANY compliments. Sometimes people ask about it, but no one ever laughed at me or said i look out of place or anything, and if anyone would, I probably wouldn't want to engage with him/her anyways so I don't care anyways. The secretary knows me by name, all professors do aswell, I get doors hold for me and people generally treat me with so much more respekt. The upsides to dressing well are just so much bigger than some "friends" or even strangers (which you shouldn't care about anyways) making fun of you, which you're probably just imagining worse than it actually will be.
I really love the sockless washington maroon by the way, I love to go no-show socks with my double monk straps in the spring !

College is the best time and place to experiment. I started to dress up a bit a few weeks ago: planning outfits, making sure everything compliments each other, and (the biggest part) wearing leather shoes (my favorite: double monks). These combined with a polo or nice t-shirt, along with nice pairs of jeans, chinos, or neat shorts, make the perfect transitional outfits. These outfits of course aren't the biggest statements ever; eventually, I'd like to be that kind of guy to be wearing suits every day (kinda difficult in Florida's heat though). However, even with these slight improvements, people have easily noticed and have either directly or indirectly pointed it out. The double monks are a hit by the way!
Keep the inspiration and motivation coming Antonio! I've decided to look for a retail position in a clothing store in the summer to help others do the same.
Oh, and my favorite is the ASHFORD NAVY/COBALT.

I live in a area focused around mining and ranching, so it's not vary often that I see guys who care about their image. I work retail and at this point in time my plan is to move up through the ranks. So I watch your videos for style advice that can help me look more professional, and I kinda stick out because of this. But just yesterday I found out that was a really good thing, a woman aproched me because her husband had a event comming up, and she wanted my advice for how he could look good. I gave her some of the tips I've learned from your videos (also told her I'm no style expert myself) and she left the store happy. It gave me a lot of confidence in my recent style choices. Keep making these great videos sir!

Nice video Antonio, i face that problem on a daily basis, right now i'm educating as an optician and try dressing sharp every day despite having a low budget no matter if i go to work, to technical college or have my day off. Every single time i come to school in chinos, combined with a dress shirt held by shirt stays a sports jacket(with a handkerchief persidantial folded) and pretty nice suede dress shoe style shoes people are asking questions about why and if i got a non-related meeting or something something. It is pretty annoying and was really hard to start with but i just didn't stop and now people not only accept but respect my style.

First of all I'd like to say great video, as someone who has been watching your videos and other youtuber’s videos on style for about a year now, I’ve learned that paying attention to the small details is what will really set me apart from others, even if I’m wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Next year I’m going to attending a college that happens to be very casual in style and I know that I won’t stand out like a sore thumb, but I’ll be a step ahead of my peers. I look forward to subtly flaunting my style! However, when I dress to impress I love the sockless look with dress shoes and a button down. That being said I absolutely love the sockless elsmere green shirt stay, it would be perfect for what I need. Thanks!

I bought this for Christmas for my best friend who works at Macys, he said he didn't like it too much because it was itchy but at least it kept his shirt tucked in when he was running so it was a nice gift. I would love a pair myself but I don't exactly have the money since I spent it on sportscoats and stuff. Trust me you have to see how I dressed before and how I dress now to really take in how much I changed. So I have no fear of dressing sharp when need be. As for the garters I am not very picky since people won't see the inside of my pants anyway but I would like Ashford Navy/cobalt.
Once again thank you for the content and I hope to see more.

At first I wasn't sure what to think of them but I am now very much converted! No more muffin top! I now feel it's time to get myself a new higher quality pair and love the KK and J designs, especially the Jackson Dot Navy/Yellow. Solid content as always Antonio. Cheers!

Since I started dressing more like a gentleman, I keep getting asked by people who know me if I'm ,' going to a wedding or something'. It does make me slightly conscientious when I'm in tailored dress pants, shirt, vest and tie in a public place where it seems everybody is in t-shirts and cargo shorts or sports logo sweats. Yet I'm always surprised by how many compliments i get ( just got a compliment on my tie 10 minutes ago.) and how I seem to be given a noticeably higher level of respect than others around me. While visiting a shopping area last week, three times i walked into a shop with other people and the salesman would approach me and ignore the others even when they were ahead of me. Also had two cases where a clerk was curt and dismissive to customers, but instantly became gracious when i approached. I have had a running joke at work of a few calling me "the Colonel' because Im sharply dressed and I'm originally from Kentucky and thus have a bit of a southeastern Appalachian accent. But I'm ok with it. Hey, Colonel Sanders wore some fly, tailored white suits that had vintage charm! ( Btw: I would also add that though famous for his Kentucky Fried Chicken, Harlan Sanders was originally from Indiana.)

The shirttail garters sound like a fantastic idea! As a very slender guy, the only type of shirt that fits me are very fitted ones that don't run too long. The drawback is that my shirt comes untucked very easily. I'm definitely going to check them out. The Washington Grey and Herringbone Brown both look great! Thanks for the video!

great video, I live in Hawaii and very little people dress nice on a daily basis. if someone goes and does something as little as wearing a dress shirt or tucking in a shirt, you get asked why you're "dressing up"

Another suggestion for how to START dressing sharper in this scenario would be to increase the quality of the items you and everyone are wearing. For instance if everyone in your circle are wearing sneakers, shorts and polo shirts, start by finding NICER, higher quality polo shirts (better fabrics and less floppy collares) and shorts. Switch up the traditional tennis shoes for some nice fashion sneakers. And as Antonio says, make sure they fit you properly.

I really like the Washington Maroon. I realize that nobody will ever see the pattern, but in my head I have this 'sock mentality' regarding wearing something fun and playful. Most of my dress shirts and suits are a solid white, blue, navy, or charcoal color. A splash of red with a fun pattern is always appreciated!

Just discovered the channel and have been watching a lot of them the last week. Timing has worked out as I have just gotten a new suit and sports jacket. The videos have given me confidence to know what works for my body shape and how I want to look.
Never heard of Shirt tail garters before. I'll definetly look at getting some once home from backpacking. The Washington Navy ones look smart!

I started a new job last fall and wore a suit and tie every day from the beginning. Everyone thought I was crazy for the first few days, commented occasionally but eventually got used to it after the first few weeks, and now I'm outpacing my peers. I'm receiving special assignments quicker than the rest of the people who were hired on at the same time as me, getting recognition for excellence in my work more often, and people in my role who have been at the job two, three, or even four times longer than I have are treating me like the expert. Referring people who need help to me and asking for advice themselves. Presenting yourself professionally on a daily basis opens doors.
People still comment about the fact that I wear a suit and tie every day, but now the comments are less about how crazy I am and more along the lines of "Man, I wish I could wear a suit every day". Well you can, you just have to want to.

I work in the construction field, a dirty job most of the time and during the work week I wear the basic jobsite uniform of a company sweatshirt, jeans and work boots. On the weekends though I step it up and dress well. It is a liberating experience because I get to have fun putting together an outfit and going out there and looking my best. I look foward to the weekends and dressing at a different level. Bottom line is I dress for me and If I receive compliments great, if not or if I get criticized then it doesn't matter. I'm dressing for myself first and foremost. Get out there and be your best self!

Gotta say, I actually bought the shirt stays from KK & Jay on Antonio's prior recommendation ... and they do work awesome ... made a huge difference in how the shirt looks ... can't imagine not wearing them now! And they're easy to get used to wearing. The ONLY downside is that you sometimes feel like your pants are sliding down easier for some reason ... but there's no denying they work great to keep your shirt tucked in.

definitely a fan of the sockless elsemere green being a college student in the south I normally go sockless
something I think people don't understand especially, when it comes to dress shirts, is just how much better even a cheap one can look if it's well fitted, I've got a bit extra weight but I still try to wear them to my body type whereas I see these other larger men like me who try and hide their body with ill fitting shirts or by not tucking in. when In reality you look your best by having your shirt mold to you and not letting it obscure you.
moral of the story you'll look your best if you dress for the body you have now, not the body you want (the skinny trend) or by trying to hide your body
