If you like classic style, then wanting to dress up when others don't happen to you all the time. Recently the viewer Amir left a comment on our video, Things I Get the Most Compliments On.
"Raphael, I've been upgrading my style. I used to wear graphic tees, ripped jeans and sneakers and now I wear untucked casual button-ups, dark wash jeans or chinos, and chukka boots. However, I still don't feel satisfied with my current style. The thing is that people around here never dress up. Is there anything wrong with dressing up all the time even to the most casual of occasions? I'm really scared of this step."
How Do You Cope With Issues That Arise From Dressing Well?
03:32 1. Whenever You Dress, Consider Appropriateness
For example, at a wedding, you never want to out-dress the bride and the groom because it's their day. At the same time, if you go to a funeral, a burgundy or red flannel suit will simply detract from the event and it would be inappropriate. When there's a dress code indicated such as cocktail attire you should not wear black tie because that would be obviously overdressed.
04:04 2. If There Isn’t A Dress Code, Consider Flexibility
For example, when you're on a plane you see people wearing sweatpants or a suit so whatever you feel comfortable with works. On the other hand, if you're in a business meeting and you're not the boss the dress code can be pretty much stipulated without being written down. In that case, consider the company culture. There's nothing worse than wearing a three-piece suit in a startup company that simply wears jeans and t-shirts all the time. It makes you look odd and stand out in a weird way.

Think of dressing as your hobby and it's something that you enjoy. It's about you and what you like to do not about others.

05:15 5. Have A Comeback Ready
If you're asked why you're dressed up, have a few answers prepared that you can give right away so you don't have to engage in lengthy conversations, shut the conversation down and simply go about your way. By having an appropriate comeback you exude confidence most other people will just leave it at that and won't bother you again.
Ideally, you shouldn't go down the rabbit hole of explaining. It's the same politics if you start explaining you're losing. Aggressive or negative people want to engage you in a fight, want to drag you down to their level, and then they beat you with experience so don't do that. The best comebacks are short and sweet.
"What did you dress up for today?"
"It's Thursday!"
Or if you want to be snarky you could say something like "Adulthood."
But again that may be seen as offensive.
"Why you look so fancy?"
"Why not?"
"Why are you so well-dressed?"
"Because I know how to."
"Do you think you're better than us?"
"No, dressing up is just my hobby."
The sooner you'll accept that judgment will always be around the easier it gets to focus on what you truly want.

Personally, I'd say it comes very naturally to me and being on RUclips and being exposed and having that negativity around me just helped me to develop an even thicker skin. There's a good saying along the lines of "What other people think of you is none of your business" and I pretty much agree with that.

Authenticity provides you with confidence. People who are confident are perceived in a much different way. Fewer people will want to argue with you and they will accept you for who you are.

I think many people think it even if they don't say it. Don't have to care about that, maybe they just have no sense of style, it can be that they are a bit jealous, or they just don't like your style, who knows. Wear what is good for you, have your style.

Bro, no joke, I got a suit from good will, very nice stuff, and the night I went out I got hand shakes from people my age, saying “I look like I’m from Peaky Blinders” and girls stared at me in a “he looks nice” kind of look
I worked for a fortune 500 company for over 20 yrs. We were always in a suit and never left your office without putting on your coat. When the company started the dress down Friday you could see how people started to view there job with less importance. After about 4 yrs after the casual attire was in place our company ended up closing all mfg plants and the company that was once number one is just hanging on. The way you look effects more than what is seen.
I worked in the funeral industry, therefore I have worn a suit in almost every situation. I learned to really appreciate the reactions that you get. You haven't lived until you have gone to Wal-Mart in a suit, hat, and overcoat. They treat you like you're either the CEO or Vito Corleone, and all reactions turn to either respect or fear when you say that you're a mortician.

My favourite go-to answer to folks asking me why I'm dressed up is "I thought I may run into you and I wanted to look my best!" I came up with that when I was still a teenager.

It reminds me of something Henry Rollins told me. My profession takes me around the world, and into parts of the globe where I look like no one there, and many people wonder what an American is doing there. When someone asks, "What are you doing here?" and "Who are you coming to meet?" I say "You! I came here to meet you! My name is Marvin, what is your name?" It's a great ice breaker.

This man is a supreme gentleman with class that exceeds the trends and expectations set by the media and society, he is a king amongst sheep of today's society. We need more men with class like this man to not only teach us how to dress, but how to act and react.
Facts
I am the woman who dresses up for work daily. I've actually had women stop me in passing (large Corporate America company) and tell me they appreciate my style. One lady even commented that it made her "dress up", as she realized how "nice" it looked! I've had some haters as well, but I've forgotten those. ;> Thank you SO MUCH for your videos.
I think when people ask why are you so dressed up they are jealous that you made the effort and they are too lazy to do the same with themselves. When people compliment it's because they appreciate a person that takes care of themselves. I use to get that jealousy from an old friend. Needless to say she's not my friend anymore. You just don't need that kind of negativity in your life just because u take pride in your appearance.
I had a similar experience, people at the office said that I made them dress up. I am a man. Our meetings now ar mich more "sartorial".
I think the thing many don’t realize is when you dress well, you present yourself well and it shows off all of your best features. Modern “casual” clothes don’t.
having worked five months as a temp in a public housing bureau with mostly what i would refer to as atrocious casual slobs as co-workers, i was the one that had the less hostile interactions(i e. almost none), was politely greeted even by, let's say not very polite tenants that stormed our office regularly and was even called by the tenants to defuse and resolve the "conflicts" or problems they had with my co-workers or the bureau. clean shave and haircut, nice wool jackets and shirts that fit, no tie though, cufflinks, clean indigo jeans or corduroy pants, daily shined leather shoes and being, of course, polite and professional with everyone and making eye contact when speaking to anyone was enough to end up with more than twenty chocolate boxes and numerous, cards and gifts for Christmas while my jaded co-workers were usually at best given a year's end greeting from one of the old ladies when not spat on. only problem was i had all my co-workers except two, badmouthing me more than they even worked... 😏
interesting and fun times but i did not want to stay more than my temp contract stipulated although i missed the interactions with the tenants and the different problem solving skills involved each day.
one of the best thing coming out of it was the two that weren't hostile started to emulate what i was doing with good results too, especially with the agressive tenants and one of them got promoted as bureau chief a few years later and transformed it over time from a negative slobs nest into an efficient one with clean dressed polite people.

I couldn’t imagine reacting negatively to someone who obviously takes such care and interest in the way they present and care for themselves. To me it is one of the most nice things someone can do without speaking to another person. I appreciate it when someone dresses so well.

I love the line you used at the restaurant when the waiter asked "Where are you headed?". By simply responding "here" you paid a compliment to the restaurant. You showed that you considered going there as an occasion for which you wanted to look your best.

"Fashion is just my hobby" That is such a good one! I am hassled so much for dressing up. This one sentence shuts down the questions so quickly and so politely and is a very useful explanation. Answers like "its Thursday" or "I like it" or finding an excuse i.e. "I have a presentation" when I don't kind of wear you down after a while. But the word hobby explains it fully and fashion is a pretty common hobby so most people will understand! Thank you German dude!
I just say "it makes me feel good" which is the truth. I have a tendency towards depressive reactions to adversity, and dressing so you feel you look great, is a really solid mood booster. It's like getting a haircut, it just feels good man!

I live in an area where even wearing just a button-up FLANNEL shirt tucked-in (no jacket, no tie, just the shirt) has gotten me comments of "you got a date?" or "what're you all dressed up for?"

I am routinely the best-dressed person in my office. Just the other day, a friendly coworker asked that the occasion was. I replied, “no special reason.” And that was the end of it. I know that some people think I am doing it to show off or to appear better than they are. But it’s not like that at all. It makes me feel good be to be well-dressed, and people unconsciously treat me differently. With more respect, etc. It took a long time, but I got over caring about what others think. They are entitled to their own opinions but so am I!
I was taught at an early age that you should dress for the occasion and dressing nicely is a sign of respect for your audience. Most importantly, dressing up is a sign of respect for yourself.
I work at a grocery store that used to require dress clothes as part of our uniform. When everyone stopped I didn't and in fact added greater variation to the colors of ties and shirts I wear to work. Unfortunately some of my coworkers try to pressure me to dress down with the rest of them. I wish sometimes that they would just understand that I have different preferences from them
A friend and I were dressed up (we both had a penchant for Victorian clothing, which is not out of place in Arizona) and stopped by a restaraunt. We were asked several times if we were in a play or something. Our answer was no, we just dressed properly to come to town :) One thing I have noticed over the years, is that dressing well gets you more respect and better treatment. One needs to get used to be addressed as "sir". It certainly makes a difference in how one is treated in a store, especially at a mall. If you dress first class, you get treated first class.
I work in an extremely casual industry. Most people wear graphic tees and such. I am trying to upgrade my style as I think my profession deserves without looking overdressed. This is difficult, but from what I've been learning, dressing one level more formally than others is the way to go. This means in my case that tasteful jeans are fine, a sports jacket, and maybe a button shirt should do.
coffeefrog That's what I do at work. Dress code is khakis or other non-jeans and polos; I wear dress pants with dress shirt and tie (sometimes no tie with chinos). Casual Friday people wear t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers; I wear polos, dark wash jeans (sometimes chinos), and comfortable casual shoes.
I came across your video without even looking for it, and as soon as I saw it I was thrilled to see there are still gentlemen in the world who dress classy. Thank you for everything you are teaching. I am an older woman and also love the English language and I don't enjoy cursing but maybe that's the compromise you need to put in to be up to date in our society. Keep up the beautiful work! I think you can wear a corduroy sports jacket with most shirts and jeans when other people are casual, but you won't be too far out of place. I'd say you are on the right track.
Ever since I've upgraded my wardrobe and my dress sense, I have had to deal with this a lot. A little annoying sometimes but I feel so much better knowing that I look my best every time that I'm out that I simply just move on.

I knew a guy who use to dress casual util one day he got in a DUI checkpoint and got busted for drinking and driving. He swore that if he had not been disheveled he would have gotten away without getting a ticket.... So forever after that incident, he always dressed up, his attire was impeccable. He stood out as a sharp dresser, to everyone else it did look a bit odd, he was never casual even in the most casual settings. But he did command more respect from everyone than he would have if he wasn't so well dressed.
I've heard of DUIs making a change on people's lives, but not like that. Hopefully he also stopped drinking and driving.
I don't see why his attire would have made any difference to the decision by the officer to issue a ticket. If he was over the limit, he was over the limit; a,sharp suit isn't changing that. Maybe it depends where you're from, in the UK, it wouldn't have made a difference.
I think he was borderline. He wasn't obviously drunk. In the US, cops are very much impressed by people or men who are well dressed, as they see this as a sign of total self respect, pride, and success, which cops look up to. I guess him being a disheveled bum caused the cop to go the to the next step, which then resulted in a ticket. Police here will give you a break if you are in a suit, it all depends on the nature of the stop.

The fact that he was drinking and driving is a serious criminal offence. If he was well dressed and supposedly killed someone on the road it wouldn't matter. Hope he doesn't drink and drive anymore.
I was once yelled at by a complete stranger in a college classroom, and questioned whether or not I considered myself better than everyone else, purely because I was dressed moderately nicely. I said nothing to this young woman, either before or right afterward, as I was in shock. I later managed to endear myself to her -- must have just had a bad day. We all grow up sometime.

Being an actor in Los Angeles, I got a custom tailor, who had made Bogart's white dinner jacket in "Casablanca", and most of what Desi Arnaz wore on "I Love Lucy:, among MANY others. He made me some BEAUTIFUL suits, that I take great pride in wearing. However, when I was being constantly questioned as to why I was so dressed up, I went to him for an answer to those questioning. He said it simply and succinctly: "IT'S HOLLYWOOD! Why are YOU not dressed for it?!!" LOVE THAT. And hey: I really enjoy all your videos fellas; keep 'em coming!
Another point to make is that family and close friends may have put you “in a box” and might be surprised if you deviate from their expectations. Most of the time this isn’t a big deal. It may actually be a good thing as it gives you an opportunity to surprise them and exceed their expectations. Don’t be afraid to reinvent yourself. No point being weighed down by bad old habits just because that’s what others are comfortable with.

Great advice. I agree that caring what others think about you is the easiest way to deal with it. That being said, you're spot on about about dressing appropriately. I went to ECCC (Emerald City Comic Con) today with three friends and I wore a Navy blazer with cotton pocket square with a blue border; similarly colored dress wool trousers, and a dark green, navy, and some orange, checked shirt, burgundy derbies with orange laces, and a simple, Green Lantern cap. After said con, we went to a Brazilian barbecue place (I took off the cap upon entry, of course). I scanned the restaurant and noticed both casual and business casual outfits so knew I'd be safe. I was given more portions than my friends and drew the eye of two women. While nice, those weren't the goal of "dressing up".
I've only been dressing better for two years now but I take it as a way to both show respect for those I encounter, friends in particular, and for self-expression. Plus, If you dress well, you can all get better service for your companions as well.
I heard a radio interview today where the person being interviewed (who was a historian) , said we are heading for a period again where people want to dress up as they are tired of looking sloppy after a year of lock downs and restrictions meaning they feel restricted in their clothes and feel lazy in casual and sports clothing, just like what happened after the last pandemic of Spanish flu in 1918-19 after which came the roaring twenties which was all about dressing up and going out and having a good time and not staying in dressing sloppy and doing nothing but play with tech and watching netflix

I wasn't taking care of myself and the way I dressed. The attitude started to affect how well I was doing my job. I started styling my hair well and dressing better. I felt better and more confident and I started doing my job better. I have to interact with people a lot.

Just tell them that you just got back from work like I did all the time.
You know, I used to be so embarrassed about dressing up, until I went on a drama trip to London with school. We went to a very nice Theatre, and while everyone else was in tee shirts and jeans, I was the only one, bar my friend who brought a shirt and tie, who was dressed up smart, and I went full black tie. The whole evening, everyone kept complimenting me, saying I looked so smart. After that, I wasn't afraid of wearing my suits in public
Back in 2006, I used to work for a Non-Profit association which was a more casual dress environment. So I decided to dress more of a business casual style in dress shirts, khaki, lace-up shoes, and on occasion, loafers. Needless to say, it had an effect on co-workers and clients who were seeking employment and I would be asked for tips on dressing on a small budget.
Excellent video sven! I relate with this topic completely because in the city i live in everybody dresses terribly, especially the men. So while almost everybody are wearing hoodies and jeans, im wearing doublebreasted suits and tweed jackets. To say the least i definetly stand out.
I've never worn sweatpants outside of the house. Some people wear sweats all the time and consider jeans "dressing up".
I'm in a fashion group on Facebook where it seems to me many of the people in the group confuse having more post with being a better dresser, I'm 64, and I've been dressing for over 40 years so believe me I know exactly what you mean. However I don't get mad especially since I'm only in the group to get ideas as well as give a few to those that will accept them. Las thing is I'm very respectful of others that love to dress, and I never look at it as compitetion.
Someone asked me recently "Wow, you look SO smart today" with a bit of a snigger, so I replied "I'm usually smart on the inside, but sometimes, it just SPILLS out" with a bit grin... I did it in a semi-derogative way with a grand gesture and everyone had a big laughs.
At the office, people usually dress down on fridays, and I usually do... the reverse! So you can have a bit of discussion about it, for example : "I'm happy, it's friday, why wouldn't I want to look good?"

I started dressing up a bit this year and in the beginning I struggled with the questions as well. In my experience answers like "it's Thursday" and "Why not" and "Because I know how to" are still too snarky. It are answers without substance at best and defensive/judgmental at worst, they can lead to an awkward silence, the other person might feel negatively about asking, which in turn makes me feel bad about answering in that way. The last one you mentioned works by far the best and is now my favorite go-to:
"It's my hobby!"
This answer is great for multiple reasons:
1. It's a genuine and positive answer so the asker will never feel bad about asking. Positivity and enthusiasm are charismatic and contagious.
2. People love talking about their hobbies, so optionally if you want to talk about clothes it's an invitation to ask further.
3. It reassures the other person that you're not being snobbish about it. It sub communicates "yes I acknowledge that this can be considered overdressed. I do it not because it's required or not, but because I enjoy it." It also sub communicates that you don't judge others for their clothing, as judges others' hobbies is tacky (like judging others' music tastes)
Hey that's pretty good, I think I'll use that if they are cool about it. I am usually more obtuse in a funny way:
I tell them "I'm dressed up so if I die they don't have to change me." I usually get a "dayum" or an "oKaY" It helps that I am a 6'5 mexican guy so I look like a sicario, if I was nerdy I would say "I don't know your mom seems to like it" if they said it aggressively or "every day god wakes me up is a special occasion" they'll think your a jehova's witness or crazy intense and leave you alone or say "thAts bEauTiful"
A fantastic video Sven, perhaps one of your finest, because it delves into the essence of what dressing smartly means to those who we care. Many years ago, a very elegant friend of mine told me "I do not dress to please the others, but to please myself" and that, I think, is the essence of elegance. A shallow, pretentious man will dress (more likely in a garish manner) thinking what the people will think of him, an elegant man could not care less.

While I don't always aggree with your individual sence of style. I do firmly believe that seeing someone such as your self who takes pride in your appearance and make an effort to look decent is a very welcome change of pace these days.
I get you 100% when I was in highschool I always wore a suit to the after school functions such as dances. At the homecoming dance i was the only one in a suit or even wearing a tie and I was completely fine with that, after all nothing suits me like a suit.
I came across your channel after watching Alpha M and Real Men Real Styles Aaron moreno may be a great presenter and RMRS is good but you,sir really know your stuff, the knowledge is invaluable. for me now you are the real deal.

Here in Berlin, we are more acceptant of the most different styles on can dress onself in- the people usually are notoriously underdressed, but they will never look at you badly when you decide not join them :-)
Really? I lived in Berlin for six months last year. A few times I decided to go out at night, wearing a simple and neat suit and tie, to a few clubs and bars. I never felt so misplaced and judged. Even strangers commented on it to my face on subway stations or in the street. I was really disappointed by this, I always thought Berlin was more open-minded about style.

This is an epidemic in Southern California. We are extremely casual here even in upper middle class neighborhoods. I get looks just wearing a trench coat.

same here, just wearing a simple shirt puts you in the formal category here.
Florida is the same way, but I still wear a dress shirt and tie to work (sometimes no tie). I'm also going to reduce the times I'll wear shorts outside of the house. The times I do, they'll be nice shorts and corresponding footwear.

Thank god for this video. My dress sense has always been a sore subject for me, mainly because of my brother making fun of me. Who, by the way, recently wore shorts and an Adidas T-shirt to a restaurant where you would be lucky to pay less than £40 per person. Your videos have made me confident to be who I really am, so for that, thank you.

Thank you for the informative and honest video. The last few companies I have worked for have a "business casual" code and very few people actually wear a jacket to work, let alone a tie. Also, I see, on a daily basis, very insecure people constantly posting selfies of themselves, usually in attire I would never chose to wear. Our society is largely driven by the lowest common demoninator and "fitting in" equates acceptance and approval. I laud your approach and have shared/discussed your videos with my wife, who approves. Keep up the good work.

As an example, my friends often make fun of me because of my ties or when I am only wearing a dress shirt with a cardigan, vest or overcoat they call it a suit intentionally. I know they are joking, they know I am joking and everyone laughs at the end so there it ends well. Though it is obvious it will end badly with anyone else.

Thanks for the video, this definitely helps. I love wearing suits, and hats many styled like clothes from the 1940's and often get comments when I go out to the store or to a friends house, some good others not so much. I often just explain that I enjoy it and feel comfortable in a suit as they do in sweat pants.

Thank you for this video, honestly saying you mentioned the questions that people ask me about why am I dressed up like that very precisely! So i sign before it, comletley true. Sometimes I feel like I'am the only person in the whole university who dresses up in a good suit or any other combination of classic clothes, and always with a pocket square. So sometimes I feel uncomfortable after these specific questions and I do feel like people think that I point myself at the higher position, which is completley untrue! But now I know that I can always anwser that it is a beutiful Thursday and that's why.

Lewis Carlin most people who don’t like how you dress aren’t people that you try to be around. It just happens. All I’m saying is that you better be able to defend yourself. You should probably have something better than “why not” or at the very least not care what other people say because someone is for sure gonna make fun of you

i grew up in a poor family and dad was so proud he always made us dress nice so we didnt look poor, i don't dress near as nice as sven but i always look clean and i do it because i have self respect and it's nice to know there are still a handful of self respecting men out in the world

Thank you so much for this video, Sir! I’ve been dressing up just for the hell of it probably a few times a month, even if I’m just lounging around the house. I’ve really been wanting to starting doing it more often, because I love the styles of the early 1900’s. I even wear fedoras when I leave the house, and part my hair down the middle. You are truly an inspiration to gentlemen everywhere.

I’m 14, and uh, well. I’ve gotten my girlfriend into any classic looks women took on, and I could care less if someone from my school try’s making me feel embarrassed about having enough self respect to care about wether I make a good impression of myself. I honestly couldn’t feel any happier that there are people like you who do this stuff, I’ve loved hats and cloths since I learned what they were, it’s literally a passion, and now I can keep in mind that I’m not the only one who wishes the way we all dress would just go back in time and it makes me so much more confident, thank you guys so so so much!
Excellent realization at your age! I too had a lot of fun dressing up in high school (the 80s mind you),; preppie, new age, chic....it was a great time and I learned a lot. I still enjoy fashion and compliments (although my look has simplified into the classics). Having courage to experiment then gave me confidence to develop my style. I envy you your voyage of discovery...enjoy it!! You and your girlfriend should be proud of your confidence, self respect, ane the ability to Have Fun!
