  • The HURT 100 Ultra Marathon is a 100 miles Trail Ultra Marathon Race in Hawaii. This is a classic Trail Running event - one of the toughness Ultra Marathon in the world - which having race some of the toughness ultra marathon like Badwater 135, Ouray 100, Leadville - I can confirm. HURT 100 is absolutely hardcore!
    The 100 miles course is mostly single track technical trail - which a heavy mix of rocks, roots and mud. It's runnable if you have absolutely no sense of self-preservation.... Otherwise, it's a mix of 'joggable' and 'OMG I'm going to die' trails. It also boast a respectable 26k ft of elevation gain yet only 36 hours cutoff (I think ~40-48 hrs would be more reasonable).
    This was one of my favorite race experience ever. A very unique and challenging course, very friendly race organizer, and amazing volunteers. The community was fantastic, helping each other out there on a hardcore race (yup a runner fell off a cliff and broke her fibula...). And hopefully you can see and feel the love I have for this race in this movie. It was hard to keep it short - I always struggle with this when it's such a good race (... see also Ouray 100 miles...).
    Amidst all the controversy lately in the ultra running scene about big corporation taking over - HURT100 is a breath of fresh air. It's a race by the people for the people! That's how things were before, and that's how things should stay - so thank you for such a great event and community.
    This is my first 100 miles ultra marathon in some time. Over the past 2 years, I've raced 24, and I was eager to get back on trails! The past few months of training were mostly about getting back to health, nurturing some injuries and training as much as possible.
    All and all, I'm very proud of this one. Things didn't go smoothly, coming in with an injured toe and on the tail end of a flu. But I found ways to make it across the finish line on one of the hardest race out there. But importantly, I had tons of fun.
    Next for me is Black Canyon 100k (and for Nora too!) Feb 10.
    As always, thanks for watching!

    Enjoy y'all! One of my favorite race (it was tough to keep the movie short because I enjoyed it so much!)

      You should do the Madeira Ultra Trail or MaxiRace Madeira 100k. There's 24k+ feet of elevation gain and certain that it's even more technical than that with similar tropical vegetation.

      @@PatrickCole-md9bu I was actually thinking of signing up for MIUT next year! Have you done it?

      I did the MaxiRace Madeira and have been living in Madeira off and on for the past 4 years. It's basically the same course, but smaller number of runners and in December. Look into the MaxiRace since MUIT sells out within an hour. I should be there in December, if I don't do the Mt. Apo 100k in the Philippines in December.

    Been waiting for this video ;-) Reminds me of when I visited Hawaii. Such a pretty and green area (green compared to Colorado). Now time to "multitask" and watch the entire video!

    Great job Simon! Way to push through to the finish in the heat, well done! HURT was actually my 1st 100 miler way back in 2011, still my favorite running experience. Always love watching videos to bring back memories. Great effort man!

      Honestly by then, I was hardly ever even jogging anyway. But yeah it's bad! It's during the night that this girl fell off the cliff and broke her leg (and I heard of at least another person who fell off a cliff but was luckier on the "landing"). I think what made it particularly tricky is that it's hard to notice at night if a rock or root is slick with mud. But by night time, I knew the course very well and knew where to watch out

    Running on that ridge at 14:00 and 40:00 looked really neat! Lots of ups and downs on a different type of technical trail. Beautiful run and job well done! Very inspiring! Did you always only have/use 1 pole during this race? One thing that worries me for my first 100 is the night section. I remember hitting the night section during my Never Summer 100k (18 hour finish) and my brain wanted to go to sleep at about 10pm. Made it tough for sure!

    • @joe1071
      @joe1071 4 месяца назад +2

      For sure. Running in the dark is my least favorite. Especially right lately in Michigan. Headlamp dies after 1 mile due to cold. Started carrying 2, one next to my body to stay warm and keep swapping. It’s annoying

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  4 месяца назад +1

      You'd think with so many kids, you'd be used to not sleeping lol. But so for me, I think it's very associated to low energy / poor fueling. It's not just being sleepy but it feels that way. What helps is to just run - it wakes me up. But of course, if I can't run anymore, that's where it becomes a problem.
      I only used 1 pole, and it was only during the last lap. But I think that was a mistake to not use sooner because my leg were very messed up. And using only 1 (vs. 2) is dangerous for your form and doesn't provide as much support. The biggest reason for me is silly but I don't have a good solution - I want at least 1 hand free to film. I also often hold my handlamp instead of putting it on my head - the lower angle really help see things more clearly (it cast a shadow and is just brighter) and that was particularly helpful on that course. But if that was the only issue, I'd use my waist lamp. The last issue is that when both my hands are using poles, I tend to it much less. But if that was the only issue, I'd just get used to it.
      ps: totally agree with Joe - extra lamp, and keeping it warm (a few times battery drained due to the cold - that's true for headlamp BUT also camera...so carry a back up battery if possible)

    Hi Simon, excellent race in Hawaii! One question: Do you recommend Javelina 100 to be a first 100 miler race?

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  4 месяца назад +1

      That's a good question. Depends how you deal with (dry) heat. It gets really hot out there and there's absolutely no cover. The course itself isn't the hardest however - there's some 'sneaky' elevation gain that can make you pace too fast. But otherwise is fairly 'beginner friendly' as it is not technical, there are no major climb, and aid station are on average every 5 miles. Having access to crew every 20 miles, and drop bag at mile 11 on each laps also helps a lot. So I guess summary is, if you are good with dry heat, that's a solid choice. If not, I'd look for something else.
      That said, I think it's a great and unique race. I usually prefer mountaineous race, but that one is an exception because of the unique vibe.

    Hey simon, just came across your channel today looking for some ultra marathon advice. i am 17 and looking to run my first 100 mile race here in september and would love some advice on some decently budget friendly shoes to wear if you know of any. i currently run in nike air maxes which have been fine for the normal marathons but i dont know how they will hold up on the longer ultras. Thanks for the advice!

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  4 месяца назад +1

      Depends a bit on the trail - Rocky, muddy, pavement, etc. And your feet, so worth trying. I typically used altra lone peak if muddy or technical. I use shoes with bigger cushion if it’s very rocky or pavement (sometimes even road shoes if I know it won’t be technical).

      What do you mean - like no walking at all? If so, yes for sure plenty of people, but really depends on the course. I even did it myself once (it was flat loop around a stadium - 16h18m). Still had to pause for bathroom and once for sunscreen but zero walk. But on a course like Hardrock or HURT - powerhiking is simply more efficient at time, so even top elites will switch to that instead of jog.
