Coros Apex 2 Pro Review - A Great GPS Watch for New Ultra Runner
Are you looking for a GPS watch that will hold battery life easily for up to 100 miles, but also don't want to pay $1000? The Coros Apex 2 Pro might be what you're looking for. Nora and I have put it to test over the past year, running 100s of miles (thousands?) including races like Bryce Canyon 100 miles, Leadville 100 miles, etc. What's the verdict? Is the watch too cheap, or does it strike the right balance between affordability, simplicity, and functionality?

      Of course coros will upgrade, but this model will still be available. Just like you can still buy some Fenix 7. And since the two main selling point of an apex 2 pro is that 1) it will be plenty enough to support trail running including 100 miler 2) it's affordability - when they do bring up the newer model and this one becomes even more affordable... well the value proposition just increased.

    Thanks Simon. I really appreciate your and Nora reviews as people I trust and respect in the community. I think any personal tips on how you setup the watch would be great - for example you mentioned being aware of having to load navigation maps before you head somewhere new. As someone who is progressively building distance and time I know that just getting the basic settings of what you have on and off right can be the difference in battery life, particularly on the older models and other brands. I am actually considering the jump to a new watch and have been looking at Garmin Enduro 3, expensive yes, but I am long term Garmin and have some resistance to a switch and just want to forget about battery life! Thanks again and have a great 2025 season.

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 2 дня назад

      I've never tried the Pace Pro and probably should. I did try the Pace 3 - which obviously that's different - and that watch was very much entry level, and much more for road running. You didn't have map navigation (you could navigate using a GPX so turn by turn, but no map). On the plus side, very small, very light, and very affordable. I gave one to my mom because she's exclusively a road runner where navigation is not really important. Of coruse that doesn't apply to the Pace pro, but wonder if it's geared more toward training and road?

    • @greg9767
      @greg9767 День назад

      @ I have the pace pro 3 and my favorite features are the battery life and the weight makes it pretty much unnoticeable. I’ve experienced a few issues with navigating on trails as well. Hindsight I should of spent a few more dollars and purchased the Apex 2 pro, but now that the Pace pro is available and its battery life is on par with apex 2 pro with fastest processing chip and all the same navigation as the apex 2 pro it has me rethinking my next purchase… Hey Coros please send me the two watches and and Simon the Pace Pro so we can do a review over the products!! Haha never hurts to try. Last thing I just want to say thanks for all the inspiring and insightful content you share and good luck with your upcoming races!

    • @MrOteron
      @MrOteron 2 часа назад

      Hey Simon & Nora! Perfect timing for that review! I saw your Vertix 2S video and wondered if you maybe had one for the Apex 2 Pro and here it is, released only 2 days ago. First off, I think you're absolutely on the right track with these reviews, you put things into context and give us your experience and what actually matters in practise. You're 100% correct when you're talking about accuracy of the watch vs. the actual length of the trail, and talking along the lines of "what does a .01 or .02 miles matter eventually" between watches? There will always be some discrepancies, and other reviewers get so much into testing and tiny details that rarely matter for your average user (but as someone who's wondering about what to buy, it's still so easy to fall into the thinking that you're getting something that's "less this or less that" and compares unfavourably to something else). In the end, those reviews leave you with a ton of information but you're no closer to realising how it matters to an average person. Your way is perfect, it's the way reviews are supposed to be: Your experience with it, what do you do, what do you use it for, and what are your feelings on its performance (not just dry data, but your actual feelings on using it). I think you just convinced me that the Apex 2 Pro will be fine for me, in the end the Vertix 2s is a similar watch but the main difference is the insane battery life. As you say, for someone who's never had a GPS watch and is not running 200m (I do more hiking and trail navigating plus some fitness training), the Apex 2 Pro will be quite enough for me. Thanks to you both!

    A hundred miles every month?!? How do you recover quickly enough to keep training?

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 3 дня назад

      On average yes, for the past 3+ years. Although sometimes it's a few more races than every month. A lot of it is about managing effort and limiting damage during the race - I don't exactly go 100% effort (it's the difference between for example running a PR for a marathon vs. doing run/walk cycles). Then it's sleep, rest, active recovery, food, and being in tune with my body as to when it's time to get back to it vs. more rest. I've arguably been very successful at staying relatively injury free despite some fairly gruesome races. Made a video about recovery process. Every time is slightly different / longer or shorter, and this time in particular was a fast turn around. But same concept. ruclips.net/video/DUHesbP5t0g/видео.htmlsi=c5OvoTjKOCPTtZcG

    Really appreciate the insight and advice. Registered for my first 50k coming up in late Sept 2025 in CO. Should be a perfect one for a first timer as I can mimic the race on my home trail at a similar elevation and have a lot of good hills to train on. And although there’s 4200ft of total elevation gain, the min/max elevations are only 7350 to 8500 which might be extreme from someone not from CO but I’m fairly acclimated. Intend to run it with the Salomon Skin 8 vest with 12-16 SIS brand gels and looks like there are a decent amount of aid stations along the way. Considering it allows 11 hours to finish, I don’t see that as an issue as I could just hike it in under 10 hours. That being said, i have NO idea what to actually expect and the only goal is to have fun training for it and hopefully, finish somewhere in the 5-7 hour mark if all goes well.

      Good luck! Seems like a reasonable plan tbh! And yes, "only 8,500ft" for someone like me at sea level is kinda funny!

      @thenextgreat8652 5 дней назад

      @ Haha, I run the Bolder/Boulder 10k for fun and one of the shirts this year says, “Sea Level is for Slackers” 🤣 And yeah, it’s a definitely an advantage living and training every day at 5,200ft. That being said, running at a higher altitude and for 50k at 50 years old is still going to be incredibly challenging and I’m half terrified and half really excited.

    Great videos always! How would you compare the difficulty of Zion 100 to Javelina to Black Canyon? Considering Zion.

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 5 дней назад

      Are we talking about the 100k across all 3? The hardest course is Zion. Black Canyon is not that far off but weather is milder and the climbs aren't as bad. Both are very 'cool' course filled with adventure. Big loop for Zion and point to point for Black canyon makes it very special either way. The easiest course by far is Javelina, AND you have very generous cutoff for 100k (I believe 29 hours - it's based on the cutoff from 100 miles). The only real challenge is the heat...so I guess if you struggle with heat, that's something to remember. It gets hot at Zion and Black Canyon, but not nearly as hot. Javelina's loop format makes it also very practical if you have a crew. And you also know what to expect for your next lap. And the vibe is very special. That said, my favorite is Zion. Black Canyon close behind.

      This is helpful. I've done Javelina 100m this past year and was considering BC100k or Zion 100 for a WSER qualifier in 2026. I'm not ready for a true mountain race but Zion looked maybe a little manageable based on the elevation and the finisher rate and the time allowed, esp as I want to work towards being able to finish WSER when I get in in a few years. Thanks for the reply!

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 4 дня назад

      @@alylipari9886 Oh ok so for the 100 miles it's a little different answer. Javelina is only 30 hours, which for the course is fine, but you'll feel the pressure a little more Black Canyon you need I think sub17. It's manageable and you'll make up good pace in the first 15-20 miles. I think if you did well at JJ100, you'll be fine. Zion's +6 hours compared to Javelina cutoff more than make up for the added challenge of the course imo. It's hard to compare but I think for me, ~23hrs at JJ100 translates to about 28hrs at Zion. I think it's a nice step up but very reasonable. If i had to suggest next step, I think that'd be a great one.

    Congrats on finishing it ! I was on the 100k and enjoyed it so much but I totally agree on the number of runners, having to wait for 100 milers to let us pass was as unpleasant for us than for you 🫤. Anyway DDF is still on my bucket list, I discovered the island this year and there is so many amazing views. You should stay a bit longer when you come to this race and take the time to visit the island 🌋

      100% totally see how for the 100k it was just as annoying. I was trying my best to get out of the way before people arrived but I noticed myself too that not everyone was even getting out of the way. I remember even asking someone if I could pass and them basically saying "no"... Still a unique race but I fear they've gone a little too much into size and should maybe run the two events on separate dates

    Your videos are fantastic, Simon, I love watching them, and want to see where running takes you next year. Having said that, please, please, take care of yourself. With the season of back-to-back torturous races coupled with global travel, I was worried about you. My most memorable moment this past year was dread that you would fall of a cliff while sleepwalking in the next race, because your schedule was too tight.

    Loving the content and this recap, Simon. One suggestion - in your race reports could you give the breakdown of time spent running, walking and stationary? That might put a lot of things into perspective for those of us who have never done such an event.

    Best suggestion to avoid sand at antelope?? Any suggestions for shoe covers?

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 6 дней назад

      I really don't know. There's so much sand that it gets through the mesh itself. Taking time to empty the sand at aid station is worth it, but I don't have great solution on the one unfortunately. Are you racing this year?
