    As a former maid, I learned that you always start at the top and work your way down--ceiling, fans, railings, window sills/windows, then furniture, then floors. Use the same cleaning supplies for everything so you aren't using 1 thing for windows/mirrors, another for stoves, another for floors and on and on---try to use multi-purpose cleaners or, actually, just vinegar and water. Always use lint free cloths, or paper towels you can toss out. This method just makes things go much faster and smoother.

But my favorite video she made was on being grateful to clean. I *hate* cleaning my house, but Angela said we should be thankful for everything we have to clean. She is so right! One thing my mom taught me about dishes is this: dishes made while cooking can be cleaned and put away while you wait on things to cook, and dishes made after eating should be cleaned and put away after you eat each time. This leaves no pile of dishes to build up and is probably why it's left off of most cleaning routines because it's assumed you wash them and put them away after your meal, snack or while you wait for your meal to cook after the prep.

    Is there anyone else like me, who spends more time watching cleaning tips videos than ACTUALLY CLEANING?? 😸
    I also (almost) never clean during the week (except dishes, but that's a given), and save it all up til Saturday. Yeah I know it's harder that way, and I spend a lot more time cleaning that way, but seriously I'm up at 5:30 a.m. to exercise, and then after a fast shower and breakfast I go to work and don't get home till 6:00 most days. By then I'm too damn tired to give a shit about cleaning. I also never buy takeout or eat processed convenience foods, it's all homemade (whole food plant-based) so I batch prep on Sundays. So I am interested in trying a better method for cleaning, hence why I started watching these videos. I'll give it a try one of these days. 😺

    I have a tip from my Mum. Don’t just put your freshly washed and dried washing in the basket for folding later. Just fold them when you take them off the line or out of the dryer. Saves a step. Don’t double handle if you can help it.
    I resisted for so long but it really does help

    • @batintheattic7293
      @batintheattic7293 2 года назад +10

      Ahh, but then I have two stories of narrow, cluttered staircase to ascend. I DO that (out of the drier, fold, into basket) because then it doesn't matter if I can't get the basket up the stairs immediately. My point is - I usually end up having to fold twice. By the time I've manhandled folded washing upstairs - it needs folding again. Also, folding out of the drier really knackers the backbone and hips. Double baskets, sitting down downstairs, really helps that but then there are two baskets to prep back for the utility area.
      It is a good tip, though, for most people.

    • @danaabrahamsen6869
      @danaabrahamsen6869 2 года назад +18

      I completely agree with this tip! One thing that has made laundry more manageable for me is using a drying rack instead of the dryer for most things. I tied up some rope to make a mini clothesline and shirts go right on hangers and get hung up there. I can put socks right next to each other on the drying racks which makes them easier to find. Like items get hung close by and are basically already folded in half. Also, not relying on things drying so quickly means I'm more likely to stay on top of it!

    • @sherip1270
      @sherip1270 2 года назад +10

      Mother of 6 children here. I totally agree with you. I fold as I pull out of the dryer and I use those big blue Ikea bags to put the folded laundry in and haul the clothes up the stairs. I have a closet rod in my laundry room and my hubby's shirts are hung right up (it's essentially his closet, for his shirts anyway). As I get upstairs I put away the clothes, room by room in my flow of traffic. If I do a load a day, it is not much work. As kids get older, I place clothes on their beds for them to put away. ( yeah, sometimes you gotta remind them, or incentivize it). Later, they can do their own laundry, but I have found that I have had to give out a specific schedule for their washing, Like "Joey=laundry Tuesday, after school." I have them set the timer for 45 minutes so they know when to move the clothes to the dryer and set the timer again for when the dryer finishes. I really dislike finding clothes in the dryer when I need to swap mine over.

    I think the difference between UK and US washing machines are where you'd find it difficult to fold every day. Uk washing machines seem to hold a lot less as we often have smaller machines in the kitchen under a counter and hang clothes to dry instead of using a dryer (many have them but it's cheaper to hang outside). For reference, my machine can handle 1 set of bedding only and that's probably pushing it to the weight maximum. Doing 1 wash a day keeps on top of the washing but does only take a few minutes to fold everything, unless theres loads of socks! 😊

So wash one day, fold the next. That way it fits the schedule. Keep it up it really is worth it. Plus for your dining room, you can fit that in to the Friday focus miscellaneous or say on weds when your entryway will only take 5 mins, use the remaining time instead… it’ll work itself out.

    Tip for laundry - consider not folding all pieces of laundry. I've gone to a method where I just toss things like undergarments and pajamas in a predefined space (I'm using storage cubes) without folding, and I do the same thing for things that don't wrinkle or I don't care if they wrinkle. Then I hang as much as possible.
    The main things I fold are cloths, towels, and certain T-shirts. That has taken the time to do laundry down -significantly- and I almost never have the issue of "uncared for" laundry anymore.
    Got this tip from a RUclips mom who had like 13+ children. Her engineer husband was the one who came up with the idea.

    Ok I’m not a cleaning expert or by any means super organized but I just want to add that, for me, it helps to purchase items for the home that have less designs, patterns, and colors such as neutral carpets, couches, curtains, chairs etc. So essentially, major furniture or comforters that cover large areas like beds I try to stick with solid neutral colors like beige. Having too many colorful and patterned things can look cluttered and can add to the overall disorganized feel of the space. Once I’ve got a good handle on things, I’ll bring out the patterned bedsheets etc. This method helps me a lot. Im still working on tackling the piles of laundry though. I think the advice on getting rid of clothing etc is a great idea as we are all always buying clothes every year anyways. Thank you for this fun video. You’re an awesome mom!!!

    I’ve always used the wash dishes as you go - while cooking. By the time we sit down to eat most of the dishes are already done ( or the dishwasher is running because there was enough for a load). Then we do up The few remaining dishes after eating then wipe down. I remember doing dishes when I was very young, mom instilled the importance of keeping the kitchen clean.

      Good luck! How to ADHD has some good videos on concepts for making your space ADHD friendly. There are some examples, like she did a tour of her house, but she mostly focused on how to figure out what you need to do for your space which is why I say concepts and not hacks or tips. I'll see if I can find the specific videos, but her channel is probably a good place to start researching. I don't have much advice on the autism part since I don't have it, but I'm sure there are some similar RUclips channels out there for autism. Good luck!

      @@ThisBraveHeart I second the How to ADHD recommendation. I’ve never been officially diagnosed, but a lifetime of behavior patterns and my absolute disassociation from time would indicate I would probably be diagnosed with it. I’m nearly 57 now, and have established systems to help me function, so at this point I question if it’s worth being tested.
      I also recommend Dr. Tracy Marks. She is a therapist and covers many more subjects than ADHD, but she does have a playlist on ADHD which I’ve found particularly helpful.

Except the kitchen. That always takes the full 30! A lot of people add either bathrooms or dining rooms to the weds hallway day as that seems to be the quickest one to get through once you’re on top of it. The final change I made was a kitchen counter wipe down as a daily task.

Whenever I am in the kitchen waiting, I am washing or putting dry away. That probably sounds kinda crazy, but now dishes take a third of the time, and it never gets overwhelming. Dishes after dinner is a bigger job, but I do it right away and once I get the water going it is not so bad. Oh I also cheat and watch videos on my cell phone to distract me. And it didn't solve my dishes problem. :( The only thing that helped was getting in the habit of loading and unloading and hand washing the pots and pans that don't fit in there. It's more about the routine and habit vs the appliance. It's sort of like using the laundry mat vs having a washing machine at home. You can still end up with GIANT piles of laundry.

Clean kitchen as you cook, run the dishwasher every night, empty every morning. No matter your system, I think you'll have a clean home as long as you try.

    My grandmother had nearly the exact same dining room credenza as yours! I'd never heard of this system and I think that there are a lot of positives! I follow Dana K White's (A Slob Comes Clean website and podcast and videos) book "How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind" system. She has 4 daily tasks and the first one is Do the Dishes! She doesn't even mention making your bed and the logic is that I can function in a home with an unmade bed, but if I don't do the dishes, the whole house will go to heck. lol! The other daily tasks are sweep the floor (because we just stop seeing stuff on the floor), pick up the clutter in the bathroom and do a 5 Minute Pickup. And then there are weekly tasks laundry and bathroom and dusting, etc. You are doing sooooo good!!! I'm so happy that you are figuring this out while you and your son are young. I didn't get it together until I was nearly 60! So now, I'm working on my Swedish Death Cleaning - lol! PS... I do make my bed during the day, most days! I actually make my bed every day because I can't sleep in a rumpled up bed, but it doesn't really count if I'm making it right before bed.

    Flylady morning routine...similar to the quick 15 minute daily tasks of organized mama.
    The flylady focuses on one room a week vs. organized mom focuses on one room daily. I had been doing this with the flylady checklist because I have a large family and messy toddlers and need each room hit daily/weekly not monthly.
    The flylady has the weekly home blessing whereas organized mom has a Friday special job. What I do and has worked well here is having a weekly home blessing AND having a seasonal cleaning where I take a whole week from homeschooling and focus on cleaning and painting.
    Flylady has an awesome evening routine requiring a shiny sink...and this has helped here so much! The kitchen gets used more than any other room and needs a baptismal nightly.
    Even with decluttering...aka living very basic, good routines, and daily/ weekly work...the reality here is that it is better but humans still live here (10 of them🤣) and in a smaller home it is always needing something done, but we can have peace knowing when something is scheduled to be done and focus on what matters here when we have done the important things...and that is the people.
    I love how much love and fun you show with your son! Thanks for showing us this new routine, with flair🤓

    I fell in love with the Organized Mum over the summer, but when the school year started (homeschool) it became impossible, because it took too much time. The timers weren’t anywhere near long enough to make a dent in the house.
    We have nine, going on ten, kids, three bathrooms, multiple kids rooms, and run at least three loads of laundry per day. This routine took me 2 1/2 to 3 hours per day. I loved its’ simplicity though.
    Currently, I’m doing FlyLady. It takes me 1 1/2 hours per day, plus little five minute bursts here and there throughout the day. It seems more sustainable, but I thought The Organized Mum was great in it’s own right. 💕 Thanks for the fun review!

    I follow a hybrid of several cleaning methods with my own twist, I think there's no perfect system that works for everyone and it's best to adapt it to you own needs. I agree that most methods underestimate the time many daily tasks actually take (i.e. dishes, and just regular everyday cleaning in the kitchen). Or maybe I'm too picky and I want to be too thorough. For example, for me changing the bed sheets absolutely includes vacuuming the mattresses and pillows, and since I'm already standing there with the vacuum I just change to the dusting brush and dust bedside tables, etc and then vacuum the floor. We do this on Sundays, so the kids help change their sheets, and my eldest even vacuums his own room. This way cleaning the bedrooms does not have to be part of my tasks on weekdays (and we foster shared responsibility).
    Regarding laundry, I've started doing one load (almost) every day, and I love it. There is no way it takes an hour (unless you're ironing a lot, which I hate and avoid). I fold the clothes as I take them out of the dryer (5 min, timed) and I have 2 bins into which I sort the folded clothes: one for me and my husband, one for the kids. Our laundry room is in the basement so I don't bring the clean laundry up everyday, instead I wait until the laundry bins are full and then I carry them upstairs to put away (my husband and eldest kid put away their own clothes).
    Some other things that have made my life easier and cut a lot of time: using the vacuum for dusting (surfaces, tables, shelves, baseboards, lamps, etc); "clean as you go" in the kitchen (I wash everything as soon as I'm done using it, or while things are cooking), scrubbing the shower while I'm in it; involving the rest of the family more/delegating tasks; adopting the northern European bed style (fitted sheet and duvet cover, no top sheet, the duvet cover counts as a top sheet and therefore needs to be washed every week, making your bed takes 10 seconds with this setup and any little kid can do it); and most of all, getting a robot vacuum. Seriously, Mother's day is coming up, you all deserve one of these. Make sure it has a HEPA filter, though. I run it every day in the kitchen, dining room and entryway, and rotate it through out the week in other areas of the house. It's not for deep cleaning but it's a lifesaver for everyday cleaning and keeping the house clean for longer. Mine has a mop attachment, which does an OK job as long as there's no stuck on food on the floor, but again, it's for maintenance cleaning. It also helps to do 2 cycles for a better performance (meaning the robot goes over each room twice).

      I have a Miele canister (C3) and I use it for everything with its different attachments from dusting to vacuuming mattresses and sofas, to actually vacuuming the floor. Scrubbing the shower while you're in it... I do that, too. My water pressure isn't great, though, and I wear rubber flip flops in the shower - so I lay down a scrubby pad and push it around with my feet. One of these days I'll lose balance and then be found, weeks later, naked and moldy with the shower still running.

    I would suggest that cleaning the hall and entryway is best done on a daily basis, and this would leave a day free to tackle the dining room. But I don’t see how 30 mins is enough for bedrooms, especially if it includes changing all the beds.

    @kerryodonnell7289 2 года назад +15

    Eee! I'm so excited! It was me who suggested you try this cleaning method and I loved this video. TOMM is totally customisable. You can add things to your list that are relevant to your home and needs or even leave out some of the suggested ideas if they don't work for you (e.g I don't vacuum every day in high traffic areas because we don't have pets and it's not necessary for us.) The laundry, as you do a load every day, does get faster because the more you do it, the smaller the piles should get. Tuesdays (bed change day) is my hardest laundry day because it takes so long to dry because I don't have a tumble dryer. Dishes are not mentioned because Gemma assumes that a job like that is a daily occurance that is simply part of being a grown up. It sucks but it has to be done! My house is definitely cleaner since following the method and I now have time within my 30 minutes to even tackle a deep clean of something in that days room. Tidying toys is also a job that is done every day and I don't include it in my 30 minutes because it'll be done even on say, kitchen day. More adulting 😫 haha

Its been a burden to me all my adult life so why am I going to burden my children. It was so obvious ask them do they want it if no sell it or donate it crikey it took me till now to fathom it. So thats the stuff tackled. Now its declutter needed stuff getting there. Next its deep clean. Then its regular clean routine might get there by Christmas but at least I'm dealing with it now instead of drowning in it. Thank you again your very motivational and inspirational your family must be so proud of you. Love and hugs xx

    Laundry is something our family does differently than MOST people. We don't FOLD! All of our clothes are hangable even our shorts. The only items that go in a drawer are under clothes and socks and we don't fold socks or underwear or undershirts. As soon as the dryer is done, we bring all the clothes to the bed, and literally, me, my husband, and son quickly hang up all clothes, and VOILA! done. We do towels and linens at the end of the week and THEN we fold and again, it goes by very quickly when you have 3 peeps doing it at the same time.

I do dishes about 3 times a day, but only for 2-5 minutes at a time. Don’t leave dishes to pile up unless you like doing dishes for a long time. I’ve been using this system for almost a year. I will say, as it becomes routine, you don’t necessarily think of the dailies as “chores”. I added “Shine the Sink” to my daily list. If I shine it, I gotta empty it. So, dishes get done. And I really like a shiny sink. What becomes difficult for a while is I tend to look for projects on weekends as well. Then I don’t get a day off.

    You inspired me to try the fly lady routine some time ago, since then I have updated my routine to accommodate our household. My husband mainly does the laundry - washing, hanging, ironing and folding (I do have to put the clean things away though), our floors are kept clean on daily basis by our robo-vaccum. My daily tasks are cleaning up the kitchen after meals (after each meal I will put the dirty dishes in the sink, wash the pots and pans, wipe the table and floors, because... toddler) and I have "15 minutes for the home" when I go through the house and put away any messes, wipe my sinks and toilets, maybe go over the entry carpet with vacuum or declutter a space. Then once a week I have the weekly blessing, that I modified - I allotte time for each space to clean and after the blessing I have a deep clean task (30-60 minutes)- I made a list of 26 tasks (washing curtains, cleaning the oven etc.) so I will do them twice a year. Maybe when I get back to office it will be different but currently it works for me.

    I was looking at the daily list and crossed out doing laundry every day and swapped it with doing a load of dishes everyday. There's only two of us and don't have enough laundry worth doing a load a day. We're already on a routine to at least do that one Saturday morning before errands. Dishes on the other hand do pile up everyday for just two people, it amazes me. I also don't really have an entryway, it opens directly into the living room and don't have stairs either (thank you single level house). There is a side room that we use for storage that gets cluttered a lot, I'll swap that room out for entryway.

And I had to add a daily 20 minute rehoming-misplaced-items session, just cause things get out of place so easily with my toddlers. I am giving this routine a try! It makes so much sense to my brain in ways clean mama and fly lady didn't, especially that dedicated day to the deep cleaning tasks! I would personally add on the dining room to the entry way/stairs, just because those areas wouldn't take long for me. I think that if you do a load of laundry a day, you will significantly cut down your folding time because there just aren't that many clothes per load. Also, I guess I never actually consider doing my dishes as part of my cleaning routine. It's just a non-negotiable part of mealtimes. I hand wash (I despise dishwashers- no matter how I sit things, stuff comes out dirty) after every meal, that way it's only a few dishes and doesn't feel overwhelming.

      Best thing I ever did was switching to wash as I go when making meals. When you're washing one or two things at a time it's so fast and easy, and it doesn't stack up. Get one of those sponges with soap in the handle and wash the stuff you prepped on while food is cooking. Wash mixing bowls and spoons as soon as they're empty (bonus, easier to clean when stuff isn't dried on). Most nights I can wash the pots and pans after serving up plates and throwing leftovers in tupperware (which also helps with portion control). When dinner is done you just have the plates, forks, and maybe bowls left and it's waaaay more manageable to knock that out than a huge sink load of dishes from the whole day.

She uses small bins for her childrens' clothes and get this...SHE DOESN'T FOLD THEM. Most children's clothes don't wrinkle, so it's a simply toss into the bin after coming out of the dryer. I think the reason for the dishes not being part of the cleaning routine is that they're kinda part of making meals. They are not listed either. So the activity of preparing the meal, eating the meal, and doing the dishes, is kinda one thing. I used to wait until the evening to clean up the kitchen and do the dishes, and now I just consider it part of the meal effort. Much easier to tackle this way.

    If you have a dishwasher, then whenever your done with a utensil, just put it straight in the dishwasher rather than the sink. You can also encourage your older kids and hubby to do the same, so that nothing is piled up by night time. And just at the end of the day you only have to ON the dishwasher and wash a couple of things that need to be washed by hand. That way, you wont have to take out extra time to just do the dishes. Hope that helps someone =)

The great thing about a dishwasher is that it's a clean box to hide all the dirty dishes in! It keeps the rest of the house looking clean and tidy! Washing dishes by hand is inevitably going to involve some stockpiling - unless every dirty thing is washed, and put away, immediately after use.

Since I’m getting into the routine of emptying my dishwasher in the morning, I am able to load the dirty ones all day and makes night time much easier for clean up.

    enjoyed your video, quick, lighthearted. I'd add couple thoughts. Straightening bookshelves can be part of child's bedtime routine done with you as you choose a bedtime story. Reinforces not only the value of books, but a sense of caring for them and setting a standard to keep them neat as you settle down into bedtime routine. There is comfort in routine.
    Also, I gave up on the dishwasher, shocking, I know! Overall, it easier and quicker to wash by hand. Children clear their own dishes from the table and can help wipe/put dishes away. Wonderful family time. And before you know it, they are more independently able to help with each passing year. And it is a natural, family nightly routine. Use your timer, you will be surprised it only takes "minutes" to do dishes. And it's a great time to converse with your family. Whereas the loading/unloading of a dishwasher is a more solitary task they learn to avoid as they grow older. And although your son dusting everything was really cute, he is probably old enough to vacuum the sofa, or move things around as you vacuum. So, it might take a little longer than 15 minutes to complete a task, but when you include a young child you are both reaping a little more benefits than just a cleaner room. Again, nice video.

    I watched you with this early this morning and I did the toilet made the bed and deviated by doing the sheets and blankets .So easy and enjoyable but my sitting room was full of books and has been for nearly a month.Completely overwhelmed with the sheer amount gathered over the years so intend to donate to our library.You came along at the right time and got me in the right mood after a first day of your routine.Thank you .

    You should check out Dana K White’s channel. She also has a podcast called The Secret Slob. While her focus is on decluttering, she also emphasizes cleaning routines, the first of which is Do The Dishes. I put that in caps because she emphasizes that task so much. When a household’s kitchen doesn’t function well, nothing else in it functions well, either.

      I also like the Clean With Me podcast. They always start with a load of laundry and with dishes because it's also their most hated chore and it's best to get it out of the way immediately.

      @@ThatAwkwardMom Dana K. White also has a great sense of humor that I think you would enjoy. She is very realistic about maintaining a home (cleaning and decluttering), and you don't feel like an awful person after listening to her. Some experts are more encouraging than others as I'm sure you know. Also, she has a few books that are also audiobooks. She narrates them, too, so the sense of humor comes through. My home is still a work in progress, but I always feel like she is cheering me on and keeping me on track when I listen to her. Others have mentioned her channel and podcast, so there are plenty of ways to find her. And yes, she starts w/the dishes which I also swear by now. 😀

    Apart from doing the dishes (which has to be number one in my house or I don't function), this seems to be a workable system. The only problem I might have is focusing on one room for one day of the week. What happens if something comes up that prevents you from doing it that day? I have chronic migraines, and I've tried doing something similar before. What happens is that I end up with a bad migraine day (or a couple in a row) where nothing gets done b/c I'm in bed.
    Thankfully, this is not every day. Instead, I focus more on daily tasks first. For me, that's at least dishes, one load of laundry, trash, and checking the floors. Everything else is divided up throughout the week with more important tasks assigned to two or three days/week. This way, I can easily catch up after being ill without having to do an entire room.
    You can see how a migraine (or other health concern) on one day one week and another day the next week could start to compound things really quickly.
    Some days, I only get my daily tasks done (those will be different for every home and your needs). Other days, it's good enough if the dishes make it make to the kitchen and I start a load of laundry--those are the priorities.
    Honestly, we each have to do our best each day. I've tried a lot of these systems, and my best advice is to take what you like from each to make your own system. I had never heard of the Organized Mom, but she does have some good ideas. Thanks for another fun video! 😀

      Migraine and dizziness here. The only solution I found was: switching the cleaning mentality. There is a : “go through your day leaving everything a mess and thinking you will do it later” mentality and there is a: “put it back where it belongs as soon as you finish” mentality. I adopted the “don’t put things down, put them away” mixed with a healthy dose of minimalism. This way the house is always tidy and company ready. As for cleaning itself (as opposed to tidying) I only need to vacuum, mop, dust once a week. If I don’t feel okay on my cleaning day I postpone it a day or two and no one would be the wiser

      Gemma (the method’s creator) talks about this. The beauty of TOMM is that if you miss a day…you’re there next week! So if you miss living room day…just carry on with the week and pick it back up the following Monday.

    • @lisajohn8388
      @lisajohn8388 2 года назад +3

      You could also just carry on where you got to if you have a bad day. So you have your tick list for day one day two, etc instead of Monday to Friday. If day three, maybe the kitchen day, you can't do anything then just do that the next day you're able instead of jumping to a specific day of the week. So nothing gets missed in the routine, it just might take longer than a week to get through the cycle.

    I have to say vacuuming daily in the main living area is what used to keep my house looking pretty good. Even if the toys weren't all put away I would vacuum around my kids playing and use the hose to get the edges. I am now 43 and after some health problems, my house is out of control. My biggest issue is that it is such a mess that I start to clean and then get overwhelmed and then I am in physical pain and nowhere near done, so I just quit. I like the idea of modifying this system with dishes daily and laundry 2-3 times a week. My daughter is 12 and has nearly taken over the laundry duties to help me out but after she puts her things away mine and my son's are left in the basket. I am working on getting him to put his stuff away immediately now that I weeded out the stuff he outgrew. A friend of mine told me I have "too much house" and I am really feeling it. Maybe if I had the same energy I did when my health was better, but I think if I focus on just doing 45 minutes a day at least some things get done. I also bought an offbrand roomba on an Amazon deal day for only 150 and it has helped me a lot, if I just pick up anything that it could get stuck on, it doesn't matter if a laundry basket is in the way just empty it when it is done.
