- In 2011, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, the first Muslim woman to serve in the British cabinet, said that Islamophobia had passed the dinner party test, suggesting you could be openly Islamophobic in polite company without consequence.
13 years later, pro-Palestine protestors are being accused of sympathising with Hamas, Sadiq Khan is smeared as palling around with Islamists and both major parties have serious problems with Islamophobia.
Since the October 7th attacks by Hamas, Islamophobic attacks have risen by 600%.
Muslims remain a reliable punching bag in the UK, a convenient other to vilify when the chips are down.
It’s easier to blame pesky brown people than it is to sort out the economy.
But why do mainstream politicians feel so comfortable doing so?
To answer that, I want to ask people at the heart of the issue.
So, I've come to Tower Hamlets, the most Muslim place in the UK.

no. as a muslim man with common sense i know exactly what happened there, because she said it. no doubt whatsoever she originally had no problem with asian and islamic cultures coming over and taking over communities. the problem is that when she went to authorities about various problems she found that the decency and democracy she desired only existed inn the culture she was only too happy to replace. now she has found that indian slums in central london do not provide a preferable living standard.

Hi fellow malaysian..Malaysian hindu here. Highly respect your POV. However religious extremism from certain politicians and political parties for their own personal and political gain has been on a sharp rise in our country of late. It is beginning to feel a tad worrisome for us non Muslims living in Malaysia and the future of our children. However, after seeing the 2 brave Kelantanese Malay mother and daughter winning their court case..I feel there is still hope. However after reading the comment sections under that case, that hope quickly faded a little. Don't mistake me, I love our country and Malays are some of the least racist and friendliest people I've met personally in our country especially being in my line of work (I'm a doctor btw)😊

As a British Asian that's Muslim, I do believe Britishness does need to come back, I fully agree with the lady in the Hijab. I am not against people celebrating other cultures that they are aligned to, but we must have a dominant British culture in the UK. The lack of this has caused a rise in a lunatic far right fringe that has hijacked the narrative for their own agenda. This is Britain and we must preserve a British culture.
It needs to be redefined, and even if that's resisted, it'll happen eventually over time anyway. Language changes. The Greeks don't speak ancient Greek and Italians don't speak Latin. Language changes and culture changes.
@@brucebee7569 We need to decide what fundamentals define 'Britishness' and then build a narrative around that. The only issue is that we can't allow the fringes from the right and left to hijack the narrative as they will use it to their own needs and propagandise it. At the moment the fringe elements have way, way too much say and it's led us down a dangerous path.

I am no more Islamophobic than I am fascistophobic. My objections to Islam are well founded and based on my knowledge of Islamic texts and what has happened in those countries where Islam has become a political force and taken partial or total power ie Iran, Afghanistan, Northern Nigeria etc. Same can happen with other religions as we can see in the USA where Evangelical Christians are trying to enforce laws and in India where Hindus are doing the same. So I agree with the lady in the red hijab. Religion should be personal, private and not encroach into the world of political influence.

The thing is that it can't be personal. I'm a Christian and before departing from earth, Jesus told the disciples to travel into foreign lands and tell people about the hopes that his resurection bring. We have the obligation to seize the opportunity of sharing the word. Keeping the word to ourselves is considered by God as an egoistic act.
If you really understood anything about the reasons for wars in those countries or the rise of "extreme"or radical Islam then you'd know it is much more about moeny and politics than it is religion persae.Not to mention the big C word,colonialism.These wars and radicalisations are much more to do with pwoer and resources and interests of western capitalism interfering and controlling the politics of these regions in order to control access to oil and other resources.Politics and power and economic interests is always at the root of these conflicts more than anything to do with religion and if it wasn't religion then it would be some other ideology.
Also if you understood anything about colonial history you would know that the Hindi/Muslim conflcit is down once again to colonial rule which used divide and rule and played off interests of Muslims against Hindus in order to rule over subcontinent.
You really need to read more books and understand geopolitcs and histroy way more as you obviously understand or know next to nothing about the history of these places.
Also talking about evangelical christianity...do you include how missionaries and colonial rulers went out to spread their missionary zeal whislt enslaving and ruling over and exploiting the indigenous peoples of an area.

The woman with red head scarf is spot on! British people are afraid to say it but there's a growing resentment towards muslims, particularly muslims for obvious reasons. Even as an immigrant myself, it makes me uncomfortable to be in certain areas! Also for that woman, why would you send your kid to such a toxic environment which creates the exact problems that you're talking about?

I imagine the father and wider family has something to do with it. ‘Honour’ culture is a big issue among Middle Eastern and South Asian communities. It’s good to see women like her speaking out as generally they tend to be the exception rather than the rule especially in Muslim majority areas in the UK.
The indigenous people have been told to abandon their culture and that they are racist if they resist that in any way. Of course there is growing resentment. Thing to remember is that its largely disingenuous virtue signalling progressive elites that pushed this, not the average member of the UK's various ethnic groups. But I fear as the pendulum swings, people's ire will be on certain groups, even though they didn't ask for this.

The problem is people arrive in the UK and then start trying to press their own laws and in some cases extreme ones. Either respect the laws of the country you've moved to, or don't, but don't expect it to change around you. I lived abroad for many years, in a Muslim country, and I never once expected it to change around me.

I miss when progressives advocated for atheism and actual liberal values.
Liberalism means allowing people to disagree with you. I advocate for a secular state, I think that there should be no religious state schools in the UK, I think the Church of England should be disestablished. He was on Whitechapel High Street, in the middle of the day, near the Asian market stalls, during Ramadan. It's the most Asian area within the most Asian borough of London. So yeah not a huge amount of amount of white people around. But go even 500 yards in any direction and the demographic changes massively again - I'm white and live about a mile away from where he was filming and the demographic mix is far more 'average' for London. Still a hell of a lot more diverse than most of the rest of the country.
I’ve been in the area and there are plenty of white people who live nearby. But I must point out that those ‘whites’ may not necessarily be English.
They are evil. The most Muslim area is also a melting pot? I imagine he thinks Britain's leadership is ultra-diverse now they are all brown.

Honestly - the point at which that can happen is past. 30% of births are to women born outside of the UK. Idk what British culture will look like in 30 years time but it's not going to ever return to 20/30 years ago. The indigenous population will have to compromise significantly and meet in the middle somewhere for our future culture.

The problem with all these different Religions and cultures is that most of them stick to who and what they know and don't make attempts to socialise/integrate on a big enough scale. Its just led to a load of separate communities instead of big one.

The UK like a lot of European countries has an issue with immigration without integration. Integration doesn't mean you have to completely change who you are to fit in, it's more basic than that. What it means is different groups interacting more, and having stronger shared ties. Where I grew up in London was incredible diverse, and there wasn't really any issues to do with multiculturalism because people went to school together, socialized, and worked together, but I think now there is more separation in communities between different ethnic and cultural backgrounds mostly due to economic barriers. These days I feel that everyone is just living separate lives near each other rather than being intertwined in a broader community. The political classes really have done a bad job in that they either go down the xenophobic route of making the other seem like it's totally alien, or they go the politically correct route of ignoring any differences between people, and being frightened to acknowledge that different groups are in fact different in some ways. We need a more realistic approach that acknowledges difference, and encouraging interaction to make those differences appear less significant. I always felt like gentrification did a lot of damage to places like London because you would had cultural differences compounded by economic ones. People moved into poorer neighborhoods because it was trendy and affordable, but once they were there they never really mixed which compounded issues. Tower Hamlets is a perfect example of that. There are rich transplants living one life in Brick Lane and Liverpool Street, then a completely separate community of immigrants and their kids living nearby in Whitechapel that never really integrate with each other.
Let's not forget the tabloid media have done a great job in stereotyping the above belief or group of people as extreme since 2001. Non stop headlines of fear for at least a decade, although the activity of the few targeting England successfully hasn't exactly helped.
In general with all people, a mass number of first gen movers to England or UK over the last twenty years has easily been a notable influence for clashing cultures. The cultures do not even have to be of the majority. The greatest change was surely when Poland joined the EU. So many different morals and beliefs as to how to live life, and what is right and wrong.
With younger generations you also now have the hidden from view influence online of imported US battle of the uber progressive and conservatives, which just polarises minds further. Multiculturalism without integration is just another way to define segregation.

Maintain social division, enrich the privileged, and generate revenue. It's the classic move by the ruling elites.

In big cities there is always a general lack of community anyway. ‘Integration’ just isn’t an issue in smaller towns. Most of the problems blamed on Muslims are in-fact a byproduct of over industrialised big cities.
The main factor in the appearance of separation is business. Certain communities are going to have shopping preferences, and business are going to gather where there are those preferences. Hence why you have streets that are mostly Pakistani and others completely English.
There is definitely something different happening now because when I compare my experiences of growing up in London in the 1980s and 1990s in Brent verses what it was like living in Hackney and Tower Hamlets in the 2000s and 2010s they should have been more similar. I understand how large cities can appear more alienating, but I feel that their are still opportunities for interaction, but I feel that people have become more detached from each other. What you said about people separating out due to preferences is definitely true. But, I feel before people would have less fixed preferences, so that is a feature of a society less confident venturing into new spaces, or having new experiences.
For example, last time I was in Whitechapel was because the cancelled the Overground, and I had to hop out there and grab an Uber to get to where I was heading in Hackney to see some friends. The driver was a Bengali guy who basically ignored me until I told him about how I used to live in the area and how I was back in London to visit friends and family, and then suddenly were were chatting about the area and what is the same and what is different. Where was good to eat, and how people act now. What felt weird was that he basically assumed we'd have nothing in common because I guess I didn't look like a typical local. But, I remember how back a generation or two ago how everyone would chat, and basically want to find out about you in similar situations. But that was the first time since I went back to London that any stranger had conversation with me. I think that taxi driver was probably the only person other than my friends and family I spoke to for more than a second that whole trip to London. Peoples default setting now is, I don't know you, I'll ignore you, and we'll eventually go our separate way. It's a tangible feeling.@@JabranImran

I didn't feel safe there at all and left as soon as I finished my degree. I agree not all Muslims are bad ppl, but tower hamlets is not a safe place for everybody, just someppl.

As an Englishman and ethnically Anglo Saxon with a bit of Irish and Viking I have been to Tower Hamlets and to the Winstanley Estate in Battersea / Wandsworth border and the claims that these are 'no-go' areas is ridiculous.
I used to walk through the Winstanley daily when it was alleged (by the Daily Fail) to be a no-go area. I was never threatened. Old ladies walked through pulling shopping trollies unmolested. Children played in the play areas.
I worked several times in recent years in Tower Hamlets. I walked freely and unmolested. I used local shops. People sat outside some cafés working or chatting.
Whoever made such a remark is mischievous at best, a damned liar and a fool.

People move to countries because they appreciate a culture, values and way of life. This has always happened and people would come to Britain because they respected the values we stood for, wanted to settle and assimilate whilst retaining their own culture/heritage.
The issue now is that the volume of people coming and the speed in which they have has allowed them to come without the need to assimilate or even learn the language in some cases. So now, we have this issue where it is a free for all with no need for cohesion and people have this sense of entitlement. Entitled to benefits, entitled to housing, entitled to services causing strain on everything for the people who were here before. This is what is building resentment because there is a sense of unfairness.
The British people feel like they have had their homeland given away whilst made to feel shame about their heritage and culture. It has nothing to do with the colour of someones skin or what beliefs they have because we, the British are very tolerant. But things have gone too far to the point where even people not from here are saying it!

The Sharia handbooks document these strategies very well. Basically you have to play victim when you are weak and be unapologetically dominant when you are in majority.

Tower hamlets and east london in general is very nice. Yes there are a lot of coloured faces but very friendly in my opinion. They don’t have the problems we gave with drink, gambling, prostitution and homelessness in their community. They look after each other. They understand community and Family structure.
Tower Hamlets has the highest rate of childhood poverty out of all the London boroughs. Neighbouring Newham also ranks among the highest in terms of violent crime offences and thefts.

I grew up on the Isle of Wight but I was brought up in the early 2000's to fear Muslims. It wasn't until I became a Civil Servant and interacted with muslim members of staff that I realized how utterly stupid that position was. That lady about integrated communities is correct, a lot of white british people have muslim friends and people they know and they are as much as part of the community as anyone else. The media NEVER shows this as the lady said, they never show people of different backgrounds working together.

I want England to be white only. I'd be okay with a small number of non English and non Europeans, but I prefer homogenous and cohesive societies. There were some interesting comments 'doesnt bother us as we know our rights' problem with that is rights can change. 'As long as you don't bother people your quite welcome to walk down the street' that sounds like ownership, so maybe there is a view that it is a Muslim area and your being granted the permission to enter. 'And the lady stating that she has been judged in a manner that she doesn't see as British' there's defo a bit of a problem there, but as the person stated different communities are setting up separate systems within the larger system of the British State. You could probably argue that's because of Councils housing people in certain areas in the 70's & 80's. But it could be a problem if it becomes even more polarised than it already is... We should work on that.

Most British Muslims are not native British/European and they are also Muslim which is a conservative religion with beliefs that are contradictory to many of UK's basic values like secularism and women's rights. Therefore, if other British people are uncomfortable in that area, then that is most definitely a problem. Immigration is an important issue. In fact: There are some places in the UK in which White British/European is no longer the majority anymore. In London for example since 2011, White British is no longer the majority demographic. The capital of England and the UK, no longer being majority populated by a native European population. Imagine going to Beijing, China and Chinese people not being in the majority. Same for Lagos, Nigeria for example. You expect to see people who are Nigerian/African. It's just sad. Manchester is also no longer majority White British/European. Some immigration is okay, but not the point where the native people's are the minority.

As a White male, Not Really Religious, On Vacation in the UK. I felt safe and people seemed to be what I expected them to be. But Then one night I was approached by drunken Muslims, yes wasted, and one approached to start a fight knowing he had 3 other buddies to back him up. Fair fight we call that where I am from. Asked how I felt about the Queen passing, and he continued to talk nonesense about the recently deceased Queen and things started to escalate and I started to prepare how and who was going to get a doin first, then all of my crowd came out of a Restaurant to see how I was doing and they all ran away like school girls. I was sober and have been for 20+ years. But this is my impression I was left with visiting UK. I will not be back, As UK has allowed it to become a dump in area’s.

Beresford Building there is or was a Barber shop on the north side of the road, just west of the of the Hill which is Garnet St. Exact location where it happened was east side of Beresford building near the Garnet St. Facts, No BS. They sure went for a run the minute they seen my mates all 6’2”-6’5” come over and tell them to piss off. Taking a guess, Afghani, or Pakistani. Spoke English very well, Just pished drunk and talking shit to a person standing alone. I still see his face as I knew at any second this fucker is going to start swinging. Too drunk to listen to a sober person tell him to relax. As a Ex drinker, I know a water when i see them, and their behaviour patterns, and warning signs especially when talking aggressive to someone who just ask you to move on.

i remember this docu series i watch about afghan women fleeing to australia. a woman who was interviewed said "i ran away from that hell to escape monsters...and now they are allowing monsters to come here unchecked. it almost feels as hostile as afghanistan". think about that. this is scary.

I have nothing wrong with the colour of someone's skins I do however have a problem with someone's ideology if its totally incompatible with mine. People coming to this country should learn the language first then our culture, if they can't do that they shouldn't come here. Sadly too many are coming in who don't do that and that's the problem today. I don't mind what religious book you read as long as you don't try and force it on me. 😢

@Makelovenotwar6969 I am Scots with Anglo-saxon and irish and viking blood. Majority of my blood is British. English identity is a germanic/scandanavian way of life. The other parts of Britain are celtic and scandanavian roots. We are a proud nation who don't back down nor surrender nor give up so easily. We have the stiff upper lip, carry on regardless culture. We are strong united culture and its worked for over 300+ years. We Scottish, English, Irish and Welsh are brave and like or germanic/scandic and celtic ancestors we are resilient and will fight to the end.
We are christian country its our main religions before Islam came. Our culture is based on our religious morals. I worry most have lost the spirit of Britain and the religious aspects. I don't mind other cultures but if you come here respect our ways
