Rick, Mandie is on to something. I find darker environments easier to listen in and the space she’s created is warm and inviting. The contrast between the lights and darks and the different textures makes it look like a great space to hear music in.
She really outdid herself.
Many ladies collect music
She called it a turntable, not a record player. She’s a keeper.
lol. Yes she is !
"Moin" (Hi) Rick 🙂.. and Mandy: nice to see you!
First I was shocked when I saw all the black or gray paint (and that on the walls AND ceiling!), but when it was finished I thought: wow - great result! I like it 👍. Great video 😉
I was a bit nervous when she told me her plans at first - but now I love it 🍺
It was nice to have met your wife and I really have enjoyed your listening room’s journey 🎶
Cheers. John! 🍺
Beautiful room mate. You guys did an amazing job!
Thanks! It's really my wife who deserves all the credit. Mandie had a vision and made it happen! 🍺
Wow! I really like the way Mandy designed the listening room!
I do too. Love sitting in there!
It looks so good! Mandie did such a great job!
Thanks, Dan! I'll let her know 😀
Wow ! Looks great Rick & Mandy
Thank you, Craig! 🍺
Looks great 👍. Rugs or carpet definitely help vs. hard surfaces. Drapes over windows too. Happy listening 🎶
You're right and it definitely made a difference.
Hi Mandie! Glad to see you joined to share. 😃
She was nervous about it 🍺
We all need a wife like yours. Will show this to mine, and gauge her reaction ;-)
Let me know how it goes! 🍺
Looks great - congrats on the room makeover.
She's been wanting to do it for a long time. It wasn't until we were about halfway done that I "got it". 😂
That was awesome 👏🏾. I got the vibe of jazz club especially the pictures. Really cool.
Thanks, Brian!
She's so sweet... You are a very nice couple!!
Thank you!
Thank you, dear Mandie and dear Rick. That's what I call a insight with a deep and permanent impression. Mandie, you're a really great woman. Very nicely done. To be honest, I personally don't like dark rooms. Probably from my childhood. You both need to be comfortable. As you also mentioned, a black hole. But that’s important, it looks very cozy. It's great with the pictures on the walls. Then this Thorens vinyl turntable. It's a former Swiss cheese that's now manufactured in Bergisch-Gladbach Germany. May I come over for a coffee? I'll also bring the homemade old Bavarian apple pie. A hearty "Servus" from Bavaria.
That apple pie sounds wonderful!
your wife is a keeper. the room looks great. the framed photos add a lot of class . thanks for doing all your great videos very much appreciated
Thank you for being here, Neil!
She has fantastic taste and definitely succeeded in mimicking that moody jazz club vibe.
I'll let her know! 🍺
Love it! Well done!
Thank you, David. She'll be happy to hear that!
Hmm, I wish I could do something like that...😜 I'm cramped into a small 8'x11.5' middle bedroom and I need more room! Someday 🤔
I absolutely love it! Also agree with Mandy's line of thinking 100%.
When she first told me what she was doing I couldn't picture it, but I had to trust her 😎
You guys are great. Ha, nice video buddy. The room looks fantastic! Classy, moody, cozy and definitely kickback and listen vibes😎
Reminds me of what I and my gf did to the listening room when we revamped. She made the mistake of letting me make the decisions of how it was to be redecorated and paint color choice. Lets just say she grew to love the “Bee Room” as she affectionately called it. I dont care what her facial expressions said to the contrary!
Yep, I picked yellow. And I still say it is cool!
Good for you!!! 🍺🍺
Looks fantastic!
Thank you!
Looks awesome!!!!
Thank you! She’s proud of it.
very nice music room and cool that your wife is supportive of your hobby.
Cheers! 🍺
You are very lucky that have wife that ❤ Vinyl too 🤗
Thank you, Ivan!
Looks great! I think the heavy curtains and carpeting will make a big difference. Some day I too will have a dedicated listening room. Until then, I'll remain in the living room dancing with the kids. I am up your way several times a year to visit the in-laws. Just hit Modern Records this past weekend. One of my favorites. I might have to ask you to make me a record store map of the area.
I'll be happy too! Modern is the last in Portsmouth (that I'm aware of). Bull Moose moved to Newington
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords yeah, I usually only have time to hit one store. I prefer Modern but sometimes go to Bull Moose for a change. I've also been to a tea shop that has a small selection? Any way, maybe I will ask you for recommendations the next time I head up there.
Pretty cool results there .. and I never knew that jazz club was there even though I live around that neck of the woods. Nice job on your listening room :- )
It's a great club with a great atmosphere. Primarily blues, r&b, and jazz acts.
i have a original Thorens TD166MkII so it was nice to see you had a New TD160 Super 😊
The 166 is a beautiful turntable!
Looks great!
Cheers!
Way to go Mandie! You are a lucky fellow to have such a great partner. My wife wants to do a similar paint scheme in my room. I will do a before and after on my channel as well. I am going to steal your idea. Thanks.
We would love to see it when you post it!
Great job!!!
cheers! 🍺
Never be skeptical when Mandie's design is on the line, Rick! 🤣 It was always a cozy space, but this redesign is soooooooooooo much better for the room's purpose ❤
She really nailed it, Chris.
Looks great love it
Thank you Ray!
My listening room was all dark wallpaper when we bought the house. there were some lamps, but it was very hard to see anything. And yes, finding an album was impossible. LOL. I had to go lighter.
The one drawback. I have to leave the room to see which side is side A 😂. Small price to pay
Very nice video as always 😁 Your wife Mandie has done an absolutely fantastic job 👏👍 The room look amazing. Enjoy your new listening room and maybe sometimes your Black Sabbath records 😁 All the best from Norway 😁😁😁
A whole new dimension to Black Sabbath, Ole. And we just had 16 inches of snow three days ago. Insane....
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords that's absolutely insane... We are starting to get into the beginning of the fifties in temperatur. But last thursday we also had some snow. But luckily it was gone with the wind 😁 24 hours later
Thank you for showing your listening room. Greetings from A Coruña, Galicia, Spain.
Greetings Spain and cheers from New Hampshire! 🍺
Very cool guys 😁
Thanks Mark!
Love the room.
Thanks! She surprised me with how it came to life.
Awesome Mandie
She said “thank you!”
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords I like how she knows you're kinda nuts, but gives you a big smile anyway 😁
That’s so true!
Thanks for sharing! I can see that it fits your style. Re carpet floor, could that make static charge worse? We ripped out all carpet in our home and put hardwood floors in. Only in the music room did I put a rug down. That's our style.
Hi Daniel. We have hardwood throughout the rest of the house but opted for carpet for the absorption. I haven't noticed any status issues yet (which is great)!
Love the BOC pic!
They will always be a favorite 😎
Nice job Mandy and cool collab video. It's extreme but was inspired and for sure recreates that club atmosphere. The large open daytime windows help. For nighttime, the gray chairs and especially the white background photo frames provide a nice contrast (I'm all about it). Sure, you could throw on a jazz album and it would be very apropos, but what I really want to know, is have you cranked the "Back In Black" album yet?
😂😂😂😂. I haven't put it on yet but I really should. Or the Stones "Paint it Black" - one of her favorite songs
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords You nailed it 😆
Very nicely done 👌. Sometimes I enjoy listening in the dark! I've also been known to listen with my sleeping eye mask on! Thankfully no one apart from my family has seen me, or goodness knows what they would think!
Happy listening to all and best wishes from Scotland.
Jim🏴😂
Thanks Jim! Cheers from New Hampshire 🍺
Wow, it looks really beautiful. Excelente'. Great job Mandie! When I was a kid we spent a couple of summers in Kittery Point. My uncle was in the Navy. Only years later did I find out he was a prison guard at Portsmouth Naval Prison. Probably all condos there now huh?
The prison building is still there believe it or not! I think it's just sitting there vacant actually.
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords - Thanks. I've been curious about that. The last time I was in Portsmouth was for a wedding in 2011. Such a beautiful area. I grew up in Mass. Right on Nantasket Beach. But I had enough of the cold winters and moved to Fla in 2006. Anyways, you have a great channel.
@@jake105 Thanks Jake!
Looks good! I never tried a black room. I have tried blackening the edges of cds with a marker. And green too. The color green absorbs light, including much of the spectrum of stray laser light. You don't want a cd player's laser to read, and be confused with its own stray laser light. Those pictures on the wall behind the speakers, I assume you are using plexiglass instead of real glass, as any acoustician will tell you glass ANYWHERE is the worst thing for acoustics. If you are suspending your speaker cables off the floor with white thread, be sure to change that to black thread. Although that would increase your chances of not seeing it and getting tangled upt up in it, like an unseen spider web. I hate when that happens. One time my furnace went out and I spent a long time sitting in the same spot in front of a space heater. This spider kept seeing me always there, and kept sliding down from the ceiling to attatch the foundation of his web onto me; assuming I was a stationary object. Always being there in the same spot. It was a cold winter. He might have been an old spider who was near sighted. I would have to keep grabbing the string of web he was sliding down on and place him aside. When anyone comes into my living room, they say; "What Is This?"
😂😂😂
There’s nothing like the glow of your stereo to enhance the listening experience. Enjoy. 🍻
Very very true 🍺
Thanks for the tour! I have a wall of nearly floor-to-ceiling windows in my living room, which is great for the deck view but sometimes too bright for serious listening. I swear my entire system sounds better by moonlight. I've played the same record in mid-afternoon and again after sunset and sometimes I really detect an improvement after the sun goes down. Most of what we hear is the product of our brains rather than our ears (which are merely acoustic devices), so I'm not surprised that the music sounds better in the dark. Fewer distractions. One question: What's the story with the six b&w photos over by the doorway? Are they all from the same source? II'm awaiting cataract surgery so my vision is blurry anyway) but it looks like maybe Syd Barrett and Janis Joplin at top; Elvis (or Jonathan Richman!) and Johnny Cash in the second row; and Charlie Christian and Aretha on the bottom row?
Hi! Close on the pictures! Mandie helped pick them out. From left to right each row starting from the too:
Jim Morrison and Janis
Elvis and Cash
BB King and Areth
Looking good you two loving the dark ceiling , one very small thing though, myself being a decorator should have been Matt instead of silk ….. I’ll get my coat 😅
😂😂😂 Cheers! There's a story behind that 😀
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords anything with a sheen will show every imperfection , satinwood on woodwork though is the way to go.
Back in Black....Indeed! ENJOY!!
Lol - thanks Jimmy!
You 2 are so darn cute!
Look’s Great!
Appreciate that Ray!
I cannot tell a lie... when I saw the ceiling being painted black I was horrified. Then I saw the finished result and heard what the inspiration was and I did a 180... It's a perfect listening room! Brava to Mandie... and thank you both for the tour!
Thanks, Biff. I'm not gonna lie - I didn't see her vision at first. I can't conceptualize like she can until I see the finished product. After I did - I love it.
The way she looks at you...
Lucky Rick!
I think it's because she thinks I'm crazy 😂😂😂
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords 😆😆😆
Looks very nice, and that Galion TS120 really glows. I have been intrigued by tube amps for decades and that one really floats my boat. I finally decided to try one a lot cheaper so I have a CAYIN MT-12N EL84EH integrated amp coming this week. If I decide that tubes are for me I just might get the Galion.
Cayin makes beautiful looking amps. Please let me know what you think of it after it's settled in.
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords
I will, thank you.
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords
Oh boy, I'm in trouble. I'm not one to pick up on subtle changes in audio at my age, but from the beginning this little amp grabbed me. I wasn't sure how it's 10 watts per channel would handle my Wharfedale Diamond 12.0 speakers with 85dB rating and suggested 20 watt minimum but they are a great match. The bass was so smooth and deep that it sounded like much bigger speakers. My wife loves music but doesn't know or care about the gear, but she noticed right away how good it sounded. The Wharfedales sounded good on my main system with my Yamaha A-S3200 integrated amp, but I enjoy this much more. This has me confused as it's not even broken in yet and I'm mesmerized by it. Is this real or is it some kind of psychological voodoo that has captured my sense of reason?
@@chrislj2890 I’m thrilled to see this! Thanks for letting me know. Love that your wife notices the difference. It will get better as the tubes burn in. What tubes did it come with?
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords
Tubes: (4) EL84 EH, (2) 6N1, (1) 12AX7 I didn't pay attention to any branding, and right now it's playing and the tube shield is over them. For now I"m streaming SiriusXM through a WiiM Pro and it sounds excellent. I just can't believe they can make such a well made product for such a low price. I'm really getting the fascination with tubes, and I just know it's going to lead to more gear, lol. That Galion in particular, lol.
Like your channel Rick. I’m a huge vinyl fan and now getting back into the fray of listening to and buying vinyl again. I really miss it! Kind of changing the subject, what are your thoughts hi-fi streaming? I recently purchased a wi-fi turntable to get back in the game. I also purchased (2) Sonos Five speakers, wireless as well. But connects through wi-fi. I don’t like the fact that it doesn’t have bluetooth capabilities, so to say. Once I got everything setup, I was pretty pleased with how everything sounded. So what are your thoughts on this? I look forward to hearing your thoughts, thanks Jeff
Hi Jeff! The most important thing is that you enjoy the sound. That's always been my stance on everything - if it sounds good to the listener that's really all that matters. I'm not an expert on data loss with streaming sound but I would imagine there is some loss of data and/or dynamics. But that's only a guess on my part as I've never done it so please take what I say with a grain of salt.
Why I see the wife painting and Rick just opening beers? 🤣 (joking)
The room, all black... went BACK IN BLACK
😂😂😂😂
Nice job 🌝👍
Thank you, Paul!
@2:53 "'Can you hear the difference? Can you hear the difference?' I'm like, ah, no!"
That's grounds for divorce.
😂😂😂
I like that Thorens turntable Rick do you like it?
I do. Dave at Vinyl Nirvana built it. Great turntable
My suggestion: how about adding disco lights in your listening room?
Have to run that by the boss 😂😂😂😂
And the boss is your wife. Am I right?
@@craneywatch You are correct 😂
I just found your channel! What took me sooo long????
I don’t know but I’m glad you’re here!! 😊
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords I already learned a lot from watching your videos!
I bet Mandie rolls a super doobie.
😂
Yeah, well... nobody likes a bragger! 😅 No, that's awesome. My wife let's me listen to records in the garage. I'm lucky I get that!
It took some time but she eventually came around 🍺🍺🍺
Your wife lets you?? Grow some balls. Especially if you’re the one thats paying the mortgage/rent.
I refuse to sit in an all black room!!
😂😂😂
Great job guys looks outstanding . Welcome to the dark side just saying...
