A shout out to all interior designers who don't always have a degree but have a talent and passion to design beautiful spaces. My journey has been very similar to Sophie's and I love every minute of it.
I agree ..I have a textile design degree and I've ended up working as a project manager in charge of an interior decoration firm which executes interior finishes for palaces and private villas in the Middle East...completely out of my original scope of what I was trained to do but very much related as it's all about design and pattern !
Hi Sophie, your children will watch this one day and be proud of you. As you said, don't be hard on yourself re the balance. Thanks once again for being so open with us.
Thank you so much! I hope they will feel like they were always my priority even if i did occasionally have to go away. Makes me focus on being more present when I can. 🤍 appreciate that as I do feel guilt sometimes
I’m currently stuck in that dark uncertain time after college, just like you described, where I just graduated with a degree I couldn’t care less about and I always wanted to do Interior Architecture. So thank you for this video it really motivated me and made me feel like I too, can do it ♡
You are not alone and you’ll get through this. Remember it’s not a race, your life will unfold just as it should. Get lots of varied experience- it all helps get you where you want to be. A lot of pressure at this stage. I really empathise and remember it.
This was a BLESSING! So much sound advice and encouragement, whether you're interested in design or something completely different. I would never have thought you were self-taught. NEVER! I feel like I owe you tuition for this. Thank you so very much, Sophie. You're a class act.
Did you have to take the state test to become a designer or are you really an interior decorator? There is a difference. I am a retired designer and never could have used the title without a degree and passing the state test.
@sheenaquagray7159 There is so much more than the average person even thinks about to become a decorator. I would suggest you get some training by applying to help a professional. I have had students from our local colleges offer to work without wages in order to obtain some hands on knowledge. It is usually required when studying to become a designer. In my state, you can call yourself a decorator without becoming a designer. If you run into one unhappy client, it could break you. Hopefully I have answered your question. I'm happy to be of help to you. Just don't call yourself a designer. It could get you into a world of trouble!
Thank you so much Sophie for this video (and for answering my question on soft skills!) You are such an inspiration to me :) I want to share a little story about initiative. My education and career are firmly in healthcare but I also wanted to get a bit of experience in some other areas before I graduated. So during school I worked as the first part time staff in furniture sales at a small but amazing company. After a few months I heard there would be other part timers coming in so I did up a sales and admin manual to help with their training. Did it on my own time and sent it to my boss thinking it could be help for them. I didn't expect anything in return. Well - they were so impressed that they not only gladly entertained my request for a pay raise but also gave me a full time job for my gap year, which ended up being such an amazing year. Although I eventually returned to my career path in healthcare, I've maintained those incredible relationships with my bosses and peers from that company. And it all started because I spent a few days putting together a training manual. You gotta "just do it" sometimes.
This has been my favorite video thus far!! I just adore how genuine you are. Your projects are gorgeous, but you can tell what a kind person you are from videos like this one. I'm manifesting that one day I will be able to hire you and your team to design my home. Fan for life! Keep up the wonderful work Sophie!
She’s so classic and honest. A very encouraging video. I’m so glad to find you and hear your story. I can tell you’re a bit introvert but you’re so talented and beautiful, especially the way you speak and the way you explain the design. I feel like whatever you touch or choose is so luxurious!
Such an honest insight and it proves that Design is either in your DNA or not. Finding the training that suits your life and ambition is key to giving you the confidence and a basic understanding the rest is built on experience. Such good advice for those wishing to enter ID to learn the hard skills that will be useful for a busy designer looking to hire - great advice to call and ask what software prospective employers work with so you are seen as keen to enter the industry and add value from day one. Sharing the low points of running your own business too is important as everyone assumes it is so easy however the responsibility to clients and employees is a huge commitment. We creatives by default normally do find the business side challenging and it can be draining especially for solo designers so having you share your experiences with honesty gives us all a boost! Good luck finding your ideal studio, thanks for sharing.
I can’t thank you enough for sharing your knowledge and experience. I’m 32 from Iowa, USA. I love your channel and I admire you. Most excellent example for anyone wanting a career in interior design.
I can not thank you enough for being so generous providing career advice for those who want to pursue this career path! I really enjoyed hearing about your Mom and her home renovation work. Also, I liked how you were adamant with your school counselors about wanting to pursue interior design--it is amazing that they arranged that special opportunity for you. Love your work and love that you love what you do!
Hi Sophie! Thank you so much for being transparent and sharing the truth about your life and career. Hardly anybody gives you specifics about how they got to where they want to be. They just say hard work, believe in yourself, etc. It fills me with hope to see how beautiful life can turn out to be, even though there are real struggles along the way. You reminded my heart that it's not easy, but it's attainable. A teacher once told me that my portfolio was as good as my worst picture. I'm glad you hear you reiterate it. I live in LA and it's a dog-eat-dog's world. I was blessed to go to the #1 film school in the world, but what I didn't do was go to business school. I realized right after I graduated that this city is packed with talent, but without business knowledge, you have no idea of what you are doing, so honestly, I think you took the perfect path. Nobody can teach talent, that's God's gift to you! How to use it and make money off of it ... that's a much-needed education, and that's what you did. Be proud of your wisdom! I wish I knew you in person to thank you. For now, please receive a warm hug from a struggling artist. Blessings to you and your team.
I think a lot of magical thinkers could benefit from such pragmatic "manifesting" advice. Constantly making choices that move your trajectory in the direction you want to go sounds like a very rational and believable strategy
This was everything (including the silk ha ha)! I LOVE that you went into detail about your thoughts and insecurities.. these are the things that almost everyone goes through but no one says out loud, so they need to hear it. You're such a breath of fresh air Sophie. Thank you for sharing such personal stories. Mum guilt is real! One of my favourite episodes!!
Thank you for keeping it real in this and all of your videos. Your work is prodigious and beautiful. You have shown me that great interior design is real work and that it is something I can accomplish for my personal home if I take the time to be thoughtful about it. I can do it! Thank you.
As a current Interior Design student, I found this video to be so informative and helpful! Thank you so much for taking time out of your schedule to share your experiences and thoughts with us. I absolutely love your channel and I will be sure to apply your feedback to my own journey ❤.
Lovely spending time with you! Thank you for sharing the twists and turns of your path, more specifically the nuggets of wisdom that can change perspective - so important! 🙏
Sophie I so enjoyed this wonderul interview! You are so open and honest about your work and life and its very refreshing to see , especially with the unreasonable expectations which social media seems to set up . Thank you
Thank you, sometimes we all need an antidote to the fakeness. It’s also invigorating being able to be honest and share. You realise there’s nothing to be ashamed of 🤍
Great vlog. If you have the eye and passion for something like interiors then it’s irrelevant wether you have had any formal training or not. You’re the proof! I love the real , frank conversation.
What a wonderful candid interview! Thank you for being so real about everything. You have great advice. I'm sending this to a young lady aspiring to be a designer and I know it will encourage her.
I just discovered you and cannot say how similar our stories are and how much I can relate to you. You're my new inspiration as I've just started my own design firm. Thank you for sharing ❣
Sophie! You touched on all my questions and concerns. I found what you said so inspirational and real. I love how you said you knew at 5 years old. Me too! So funny!
Loved the video and the GLOW you have is beautiful. I remember my career advisor telling me the same thing when i said i want to be an interior designer. She tried to put me down the business route. Glad i stuck to my passion
I'm always amazed at your generosity, both in time and in sharing your professional knowledge. This video was candid, especially for a fellow introvert. Thank you for sharing your story and wisdom.
I really appreciate your honesty & vulnerability regarding your work-life balance. The feelings are soo real and it can often appear like everyone else can do it all so why can't you, but not many people mention the amount of help they have and the big difference it makes. No one is able to do everything all by themselves and mothers shouldn't be expected to. Even with help it's still a challenge. The amount of pressure we can put on ourselves sometimes is just unbearable. Love your work btw and your best will always be enough. Children are soo forgiving and loving that our effort to do our best as parents will always go a lot further than any expected result.
Thank you so much for opening up, choosing to be vulnerable and sharing about your journey.🌹It's very inspiring! You have a very beautiful home! ✨And you seem to be a beautiful person both inside and outside ❤️
Wow Sophie this is such a hugely encouraging video. Thank you so much for sharing. I have my own business, not in interiors, but I find you so inspiring and authentic x
Tbh I never thought aomeone sophisticated like Sophie would work in a restaurant, please dont get me wrong I dont wanna underestimate restaurant industry as I also worked in a restaurant myself, just listening such details about her past makes me feel more connected with her and how successful she became in her business which gives me hope! ❤ thanks for sharing genuinely!
Thank you for sharing your journey ups and downs. It showed that road to success is not linear...and that hard works is a big part of that! One thing i love about your design is storage space...and timeless style. Wish you and team more success in future.
Dear Sophie, I can't get out of my amazement! What a great, informative and personal video! I enjoyed every second because I think you are very credible. It becomes clear that despite adverse circumstances you never lost faith in yourself and your success. And that is the most important message for me, besides all the work you certainly put into your career. And this message is incredibly inspiring and motivating. You have my respect! Bravo! All the best for you, your family and your team! And please continue to provide us with your beautiful videos. 😊
I wish I would have had your advice when I was a young girl in Interior Design School. Back in the 1980’s before we had CAD drafting, one would have to be able to render. I did so well in drafting, prospective drawing and designing but lacked the talent to draw proficiently. At my college we had to pass a sophomore portfolio to continue on and sadly my drawing skills did not make the cut. I ended up getting a Masters Degree in History and I do love my job in law, however, I will always regret giving up on my dream to design homes. I could have gone back in the mid 90’s and used CAD and other programs to render. I love your channel, very inspirational. ❤
Always was stoping my self , because I do not have degree in interior design... You are inspiration. So many people were saying to be ,what designers without diploma are decorators.
Wonderful to hear how you became an interior designer! We have a podcast episode & RUclips video about changing career to interior design and we think it would be a great listen for anyone who would like to hear more about it 😊
Estoy impresionado. Me ha encantado tu humildad y sinceridad. Para nada te imaginaba así. Un ejemplo a seguir de como se pueden conseguir tus sueños a pesar de las dificultades. Me encanta tu trabajo, simplemente impecable. Felicidades de corazón y besos desde Madrid.
Thank you for sharing your interior design story, I have always been curious about your journey. I also wanted to let you know how much I enjoy my Coze robe. I asked for it for last Christmas and was so excited to get it, it is by far my favorite fluffy robe ever! I would like more things from your collection at Coze but will see if Santa is able to come across the pond again! 😊
You are so unbelievably talented, interior design was definitely your calling. I would love to see a video on some of the design/business mistakes that you or your team have made and how you fixed it.
I thought I was strange I also will without thinking match the colors I’m working with and when my daughter was little I would without trying match the colors we wore ❤. Love your style! From🇺🇸 Pennsylvania
Wow, super creative, it's scary! In every aspect! Fascinating story on how you started and where you are now, really gripping, loved it all and Congratulations, you're simply the best, end of, I mean your team too, they are amazing. And yes, looks (and even speaks) like the Princess of Wales, imagine if the 2 would meet, now THAT would be a fascinating video to watch!! I'd love it. The Queen of design meets the future Queen of GB ❤❤xx
Hey! Sophie I am so so glad to see you back and I really really missed your videos so so much you are my inspiration and I wish you have a beautiful day always💫🙂💓
I loved this real post. I have written before empathising with your journey to parenthood. I love stealing small ideas from you. If you ever want to do a project in a ‘normal’ home I’m your woman!
I love watching the creative inspiration that you pour into your projects, and looking at the lovely timeless spaces you design. Could you please do a video on selecting carpeting? Much needed for our living space.
Really missed your videos after not seeing any for a month so glad its back. I remember asking about where you source the thin bedspreads so happy to know you are actually bringing out your own! Hope to see more colours in the future. hint: a blue/navy :p
So helpful, thank you! I just graduated with a degree in Environmental Science and love it, but I want a job where I can be expressive and showcase my eye for art and design. I'm working towards being a sustainable designer and I'm doing as much research as possible. Your videos are great! Subscribed :)
What a fascinating video. I so admire your openness and the advice you give. I am sure both will resonate with many people…..what a shame you are so far away from my home in Australia. 😥
Hi Sophie, Thank you so much for taking time to film this amazing and very informative video, I didn’t want it to end! I wanted to ask how you were able to get clients to agree for photographs/video tours to be taken of their homes after completion. I’m struggling to build my portfolio because of this reason.
Good question- I put it in my contract so we discuss it at the beginning and know if it’s an issue or not before we start. I occasionally take on a project where we can’t photograph but photography is so important for building your portfolio and business that if I have a waiting list I prioritise projects that allow me to photograph. If a client doesn’t want us to photograph then I always respect that
Thank you so much for such a personal video. Grear tips for someone wanting to get in the business. I can't wait to see all of your new collections. I hope you find the perfecr spot for your showroom.
Thank you so much for sharing your journey as an Interior Designer Sophie-this was such a good video. Even more so when I realised the videographer was none other than 'mystery Rich'!!! How amazing 🤩
Well I went to study Finance at Uni and guess what biggest regret of my life … Sophie wow bravo for resisting peer pressure cause it was the trendy thing to do to study business at the time … now if you wanna be successful you have to learn a proper job like interior designer or Chef or pilot etc….
Sophie! Recently discovered this channel on RUclips and been absolutely devouring your videos. Please please please help me - the large rug your lounge where you answer the interview questions- where can I get one like it!! ❤
I’m new to the UK and I have just learnt of the “ computer says naaa “ sketch a few days ago. You referencing that at the least expected time made me almost wet my pants. You’re both talented and funny ❤
“You are only as good as your portfolio”
“You attract what you put out there”
love that ❤️
Thank you

Love the ‘realness’ of this interview. Very interesting. Well done Sophie! 👏👏👏
Loved this ❤ Thank you for sharing your non-linear career journey. It’s good to hear people reach their goals in a “non traditional” way.
This is why you're (for me) "the royalty" of interior design!🤗
This is SO refreshing and motivating. Thankyou for sharing Sophie!♥️
You are so welcome! And thank you for your support 🤍
Love your down to earth personality. You don't over sell yourself, you just let your work do the talking ❤
Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much Sophie for this video (and for answering my question on soft skills!) You are such an inspiration to me :)
I want to share a little story about initiative.

I thought I was strange I also will without thinking match the colors I’m working with and when my daughter was little I would without trying match the colors we wore ❤. Love your style! From🇺🇸 Pennsylvania
You’re not the only one!!

I loved this real post. I have written before empathising with your journey to parenthood. I love stealing small ideas from you. If you ever want to do a project in a ‘normal’ home I’m your woman!
Thank you
Hi Sophie, huge fan! Can you share what tech you recommend? Ie MacBook, iPad etc
Great interview and helpful answers ❤ I already miss the style of the videographer who used to create the videos for Sophie.
Sophie you are an amazing woman. You inspire me. It would be my great dream to meet you in person. I wish you great success.
I love watching the creative inspiration that you pour into your projects, and looking at the lovely timeless spaces you design. Could you please do a video on selecting carpeting? Much needed for our living space.
Wow Sophie so very inspiring & I am very motivated (honestly I awaken that way daily) to use your esthetic- thank you for all you do !
So inspiring! Thank you for this video
Really missed your videos after not seeing any for a month so glad its back. I remember asking about where you source the thin bedspreads so happy to know you are actually bringing out your own! Hope to see more colours in the future. hint: a blue/navy :p
I’ll work on it!! 🤍 need the taupe ones to be successful and they’ll let me bring out more colours 🙏🏼🤣
Sophie, you are so elegant and graceful. 💕 Thank you for creating these beautiful vlogs! 🎉
So helpful, thank you! I just graduated with a degree in Environmental Science and love it, but I want a job where I can be expressive and showcase my eye for art and design. I'm working towards being a sustainable designer and I'm doing as much research as possible. Your videos are great! Subscribed :)
Thank you so much for sharing your story. Everything you said rings so true. All the best for the future ❤
Thank you so much! Wishing you all the best
I have been following you since the very beginning and so pleased to see how far you have come. Thanks for sharing
What a fascinating video. I so admire your openness and the advice you give. I am sure both will resonate with many people…..what a shame you are so far away from my home in Australia. 😥
Really enjoyed the realness and all your tips. Thank you Sophie and team
Hi Sophie,
Thank you so much for taking time to film this amazing and very informative video, I didn’t want it to end!
If a client doesn’t want us to photograph then I always respect that
@@sophiepatersoninteriorsltd thank you so much for your response!

Well I went to study Finance at Uni and guess what biggest regret of my life … Sophie wow bravo for resisting peer pressure cause it was the trendy thing to do to study business at the time … now if you wanna be successful you have to learn a proper job like interior designer or Chef or pilot etc….
