Bons off Broadway always holds special place in my heart because my family knows the owners so growing up as a kid from Vic going to and from Van we always would hit up Bons at least once a trip! One of the few greasy spoon diners still around for cheap!! Always loved the graffiti dive bar vibes!
The Bon used to be at Broadway and Ash, too. Same menu mid-80’s. Bon was also at the PNE FoodFair every summer! Hello to the Bon! Happy families when times were good!
If it wasn't for the one time I got food poisoning for Bon's breakfast id go back but can admit that's one of the best deals in the city- its so god damn expensive to eat here!!

Guys! Also, don’t forget to check out the ‘Shogun’ restaurant for your next $5 eats series. It’s at the Lansdowne food court in Richmond and is run by a sweet Japanese family. Make sure to try their $5 beef noodle soup bowl. The quantity and the taste is unreal! And it’s legit $5! They also serve California rolls for 3$ and a bunch of other cheap meals. So that restaurant is a must try for sure 💯🥂
I have driven by this Sea House thousands of times in my life and been in the plaza a few times, and I have never noticed the restaurant. Definitely will check it out the next time I am driving by.

bro i was born in van, i live in the uk now and fuck do i miss it, love this channel it reminds me so much of home and you guys have such a vancouver vibe
My fave cheap eats in the area is Paradise Donair in New West. Nice, big portion of fresh healthy good food for cheap $5 gets you your choice of meat, 5 veggies and 2 sauces. You can get more veggies for $0.25 each and the portions are very generous.. and they're open like 8am-midnight. Gotta get one every time I'm near.
@reelininthebeers8234 yeah man. Apparently there's another Donair place down the street that's a good deal, too. Haven't been there.. can't imagine it being a better deal though. It feels like the prices haven't changed since like the 90s. I was there last week for dinner and breakfast before catching a ferry back to the island haha.. I did the teenage girl thing and took a photo of my food and the menu board if you wanted a preview before heading over.. but you won't be disappointed. F*ck'n love that place!
total reality bites/clerks vibe with your vids- cool! i fondly remember all the buck-a-slice pizza places in kitsilano back in the 90s. one had 2 big slices and a jones soda(when they were just starting out) for 2.75- incredible, even then! miss those daze...
So happy to see the review of the fish and chips place. I often get the veggie pakoras from the Indo/Chinese place at the same mall to go. They are quite unusual golfball size and you only get I think it's 10 for something like 13 bucks but they are amazing with a super hot dipping sauce. I take them home and my husband adds vegetables and rice and we have a full meal.
@@reelininthebeers the first time we ordered them I was furious because it seemed like an awful lot of money for the small amount of pakoras that in no way resembled a pakora. Then I tried it…nom.

When we worked downtown 30 years or so ago we used to go to an unmarked spot in the basement of a place on like Pender near the east side, only had banquet tables and benches but a great big bowl full of meat, veggies, and broth, was the best $5 lunch anywhere downtown 👍
Despite the commercialism, it's still hard to beat the $1.50 Costco's hot dog and drink or the double junior bacon cheeseburger at Wendy's. Not to mention the chili cheese nachos for less than $3. This video was really well done though and I'm going to keep my eyes open for destinations you might sample
Totally agree they’re good options but most people know about them already and they’ve been covered on every list, so we tried to sway from that and find ourselves some different cheap eats. Cheers! 👊🏻
Amazing video, I really appreciate the research and finding actual cheap eats. Would you be looking to do any other areas as well? Like Coquitlam, Surry, Burnaby, Langley, etc.
Damn now i gotta go to bons 🤤 I love that place. so iconic to my childhood. As a late 90s kid from van, its a staple of vancouver. If it ever closes I'll actually cry
I'm sorry but i Live in Langley downtown (Construction zone) and the prices are the same. By the time you go out and find something for 5 bucks is it worth the time? Consider the following and you will be able to make better food at home. For the same time and money. eggs, pork belly for bacon ( I usually slice it when I'm Drunk as hell, get some pepper and salt on it). Pans are cheap. Meat can also be Velveted for tenderness.
Haha genuinely appreciate the sentiment but I think most people know they can cook for cheap at home. The idea here is to be able to go out with some friends, get some decent food, not have to do any dishes, all whilst not breaking the bank haha. Cheers boss!
Man back in the day living in Vancouver I was a Bon's regular. Get a heaping double breakfast with two portions of sausage, scrambled eggs, some of the best hash browns anywhere. Throw in a toonie as a tip and you're stocked up for the entire day for $8. I'd miss the sausage option badly but still the best deal in town I think.
Tbh I wonder if you guys reviewed the Evelyn Saller and Gathering place, they’re not exactly homeless resources but community Centers and the meals are really on par for like 2.50 or 3.25( the latter) both are killer full course meals and I think could use some attention and credit. Great video btw
I live way east outside of Van but ive taken the trains n buses all over the lower mainland, i thought i knew every spot but turns out i dont just by this video! I have to check some of these places out 👀
Wow randomly stumbled upon your video. Thank you so much for uploading this! I always pass by Sea house and Bon's but never went in, now ima give it a shot
0:47 For a hole-in-the-wall type diner, $8.95 for a single piece of fish is unheard of here in Toronto. The lowest price I could find is $12.95 for a single piece with chips but no Tartar sauce. It comes from a Canadianized Chinese restaurant who weirdly enough gives us a single packet of Wing's Mustard hot sauce to go with the single portion of fish. It was good, but they didn't have a double portion pricing. Other places want minimum $24.99 for a single portion and $12.99 for each extra portion. Chips, slaw and more are all extra. But they can go for as much as $50+ for a double portion of chips in these parts. And Vancouver was supposed to be more expensive than Toronto??? That's as bad as the chain Burger King who dropped their 2-for-$11 Whopper deal and changed it to a basic Quarter Pounder with cheese just the basics (mustard + 1 pickle). If you want lettuce, onion, relish, ketchup, mayo and burger sauce it's an extra 60¢ each item and double that for extra of those items. ie: Extra Onions = $1.20... So to make a full burger the Two for $11.99 can easily beome two for $30 and that's part of their value deal??? 4:40 That DIY concept came to Toronto, but in an ignorant way - the father and daughter team who claimed to have created that DIY Ramen bowl meal in Vancouver decided to open a highend restaurant here in Toronto. Sure they offered packaged Ramen bowls and we'd have to cook it ourselves as well, but adding items to that bowl made a simple $2-$3 Dollarma noodle pot into a $20-$30 meal and we'd still have to cook it ourselves. They didn't open in the DT core and only opened for 36 days before they realized we here in Toronto - we aren't stupid and regardless the hype about this DIY concept, we weren't about to pay $20-$30 per bowl and still have to cook it ourselves. Vancouver is more expensive than Toronto in both terms of real estate and dining out. But regardless the lure surrounding Vancouver, Toronto still ranks the largest city in Canada. Vancouver is 5th on the list in terms of population, but with pricing, they are number one in that retrospect.
Another great place that seems to not have been hit by inflation is Duffins Donuts on 41st and Knight! Subs for $6 still, great variety of food, AND it’s 24/7!!

If ya make a $10 list, try the Filipino restaurants on Joyce!!!! I am writing this after eating a $10 combo meal from Pampanga’s Cuisine hahah delicious
i would get a kebab for 13 bucks at broadway station and think its a good deal in vancouver... now i live in vietnam where a sit down kebab is 1 dollar and beer is 50 cents. the deli at t and t supermarket is pretty good for cheap eats.
Dang! Real fries and the fish was also fresh? If it wasn't busy and they're making it fresh that's a heck of a deal. Also noice to hear Daniel Romano in the Bon's segment.
The Sea House 1-piece fish and chips and burger are now $8.95.

Would you be looking to do any other areas as well? Like Coquitlam, Surry, Burnaby, Langley, etc.
We would do anywhere we can find good cheap eats! It’s getting harder and harder though haha. Got any ideas?
I was on the fence about you two until I saw the graffiti work. You've won my sub.
Hahaha cheers
And here I thought a NeNe burger for $10 was cheap. Good finds, boys. I work right beside Grab n' Go, I'll check it out!
Do it!
I just moved to Canada form Mexico. I work on a DQ. It’s insane. Thanks for the video really enjoyed it
Thanks man we have a couple vids of us in Mexico. We love your country man 👊🏻
Damn now i gotta go to bons 🤤
I love that place. so iconic to my childhood. As a late 90s kid from van, its a staple of vancouver. If it ever closes I'll actually cry
We were worried about that during Covid but I think Bons will never die 👊🏻
Cheap(er) eats @ Broadway, Stn City Sq food court. Not 5 bucks but there's some decent food selections and it's quiet/cozy.
What’s it called?
@@reelininthebeers woops, meant to say it's City Centre Food court, at City Centre mall, 12th and Cambie, you can't miss it!
have lived in / around Van for years. this video really captured what i love about the city
Damn, thanks. That means a lot. 👊🏻
Ya I feel ya, I miss a lot of what you used to be able to get but it truly is still a crazy deal. Cheers eh 👊🏻
@@reelininthebeers cheers. I saw you mention you were looking to do an Ontario version of this video. Man I would love to see $5 options for Ottawa.
Tbh I wonder if you guys reviewed the Evelyn Saller and Gathering place, they’re not exactly homeless resources but community Centers and the meals are really on par for like 2.50 or 3.25( the latter) both are killer full course meals and I think could use some attention and credit. Great video btw
Been wanting to do a video there for awhile. Sounds incredible and we want to do it justice. Thanks!
This channel randomly popped up on my feed, lovin the contect guys. New sub here!
Hell ya thanks!
Do it man!
Yo, The mount pleasant Dairy Queen location after 8pm has 2 for 5 bucks sundaes and dipped cones
Damn I frequent that DQ and didn’t even know.
that was a great watch. well edited too, TV quality.
Yo thank you.
I really like this. It feels heartwarming ❤
Cheers :)
Another great place that seems to not have been hit by inflation is Duffins Donuts on 41st and Knight! Subs for $6 still, great variety of food, AND it’s 24/7!!
We’ve got a video on duffins! Place is unreal
Bob’s is so gnarly😂 but it is great - I’m glad that deal is still there
Ebisu on robson has $1 oysters recommend! And of course Bons is a classic!
Of all these "Eat cheap in Van" clips I've seen, you guys actually buy real food Vancouverites would eat. Cool clips guys, thanks for the heads up on the cheap grub.
Cheers! 🍻
What’s the background music you got over the visit to Bon’s? Killer tune.
Guys name is Daniel Romano. He’s unreal. His record “Modern Pressure” is fantastic. That song is called “Visions of a Higher Dream” off the record with the same name as the song that is sadly only on band camp. Cheers bruh. 👊🏻
Danny Romano is a god damned legend. The Jennifer Castle track from the same album is great.
@@Team-Zissou yeah so good!
Channel is a vibe 🤟🏻
Thanks dog. 👊🏻
You guys need to check out Kent's kitchen. Might be a little more than five bucks but you get more food than you can possibly eat.
Kent’s is Awesome!
@@reelininthebeers how much is a combo plate there now? It's been a long time since I've been there.
Down the street from where I live in Alberta, that same breakfast, literally, exactly the same, costs 16.95 before tip...
Ooof ya bons is kinda one of a kind
know this was a van video but want to give a shoutout to Taqueria Playa Tropical on 6th in new west. you can get 2 tacos for 5 which is the cheapest I've found in metro van
Hell yeah
If ya make a $10 list, try the Filipino restaurants on Joyce!!!!
I am writing this after eating a $10 combo meal from Pampanga’s Cuisine hahah delicious
I used to live right beside Panpangas I’ve been wanting to do a video there for a long time. So sick to hear it’s still affordable
I went to the fish and chips place long ago… and it’s like they didn’t want me there… almost like the store is a front…🤷
As long as they’re slingin’ $5 fish I don’t care what they’re doing in the back
You guys have a great vibe! I wish I could make more friends like you in Van
where are these guys from orignally? he said he came to vancouver 4 years ago
Cranbrook BC baby.
Fantastic content, happy to have this intel! 😊
Thank you :)
I’m from the island but now I know how to avoid spending all my budget when I hit up Van! 😊
Thanks :). We did a video in Victoria but its definitely not budget eats haha
love this vid!
Thanks eh!
i would get a kebab for 13 bucks at broadway station and think its a good deal in vancouver...
now i live in vietnam where a sit down kebab is 1 dollar and beer is 50 cents.
the deli at t and t supermarket is pretty good for cheap eats.
Totally. Also I love Vietnam.
subscribed for the blizzard haha
That’s what’s up
skipping first block at tech to eat bons and then play games at vnet those were the days
Bons is Fking great. Are they still open?
Yes! Hope they never close
Dang! Real fries and the fish was also fresh? If it wasn't busy and they're making it fresh that's a heck of a deal.
Also noice to hear Daniel Romano in the Bon's segment.
Love that you listen to Daniel. 👊🏻
