    For shading the white, I'd recommend just using Soulblight Grey as a wash, or Apothecary White contrast paint. I used to just thin down Nuln Oil, but Soulblight Grey makes that a lot simpler.
    There's a few other GW contrast paints with very light colors like Gryph-charger Grey, though you'll probably need to thin those down, similar to in the video, to keep the armor white enough.

    I'm not a figure painter, but I do understand the ideas behind it thanks to your channel and some others. Thank you for that!
    With that in mind, I miss the zenithal (?) lighting on the weapons of the black figure. Perhaps some shading on the undersides of the weapons as well. They feel "photoshopped" to the photo of a well painted mini :)
    BTW, my 4-year-old just saw the image of both figures at the end of the video and now he wants to paint some "small space soldiers" himself :) Thanx! :D
    Keep up the great work!

    What is the value/reason for using drybrushing for zenithal rather than using the airbrush (which is what I always do)? It seems like a lot of work without any advantage that I can see. This is a genuine question, I'm no great painter so I'm just wanting to understand this choice better.

    • @jtswargaming
      @jtswargaming Год назад

      Drybrushing will catch on the edges giving you more dramatic changes in color, so if your speedpaint is thin enough, you get sharper edge highlights without extra effort. You will still get edge highlights if you airbrushed the zenithal due to the nature of speedpaints, but they won't be as pronounced. IMO, airbrushing the zenithal will give smoother gradients on your flat armor panels though. Both techniques are useful for different things, and can even be combined. I will often 3-tone zenithal through the airbrush and then give a super-soft drybrush of my brightest tone before moving on to speedpaints to get the best of both worlds.

    The easiest way to paint black armour is to directional edge highlight directly over black with a dark grey. (In the case of your characters, black undercoat, layer Model Painter grey black leaving the recesses black, followed by a dark grey highlight for directional edge highlighting.)
    For white armour: White undercoat, Corax white basecoat, recess wash with space wolves grey, fix with corax white, edge highlight with white scar.
    These are the methods I use for painting my White Scars and Black Templars armies. Because I use models from 2nd ed, I have more flat surface areas with minimal detail, so painting marines is very easy.

Though if it were me, instead of gray I'd do a desaturated blue tone like P3 Coal Black to begin with and then lightening that from there for black, and this still gave me inspiration, so thank you!

    The basecoat with the highlight layer paint mixed with base paint used on half of the model is how I paint my Space Marines, only I do a bit of water blending when transiting from dark to light tone. I'll give the drybrush a go on the next projects.

Before getting into the hobby, I'd assumed you'd be looked down upon as uncreative if you didn't roll up with your own custom chapter.
