  • How To Prune a Wisteria Tree and how to prune wisteria bonsai trees. In this video I share with you how to prune wisteria bonsai trees and also how to prune wisteria grown in the ground and trained to grow agains a house wall or grown in pots. In both cases the Wisteria stalks on which the flowers grow are removed after flowering. If you want to collect seeds, then leave a few for harvesting seeds in late summer/ autumn/fall. The Wisteria tendrils grow very fast and for this reason it is important the wisteria are pruned around now to maintain the shape and then again in August and then in winter when the branch structure is visible as all the leaves are down. The trees should be heavily fed, I use chicken pallets to fertilise my wisteria trees. The Wisteria bonsai pots should be place in shallow trays of water. These trees are very thirsty as the as there is a lot of foliage which needs to be supported.
    For full care see the first wisteria video in the play list, link is in the info card in the top right hand side of the video screen.

    Hi Iqbal, funny afterthought 😂. Took me a few seconds though. Must be my age. A big tree like this would look better in a wide shallow pot, in my opinion. Perhaps, a little wider than the tray beneath the pot but of same height, since the canopy is quite large.

    • @mikbonsai
      @mikbonsai  6 лет назад

      Hi Vinny, Thanks for your feed back. As you know this is a normal Wisteria made into a bonsai tree. So have to follow its horticultural aspects.
      I am following guidance of John Naka for this Wisteria. This is what John Naka said about Wisteria: Don't plant in an over sized pot, smaller pot will encourage more roots. Wisteria needs roots to bloom.
      I am not using bonsai soil for this tree as planting in heavy soil to encourages more roots.
      There is a full summary of this trees needs, care and maintenance are in the description box below first video of this tree when I repotted it the Link is: ruclips.net/video/2SUCjLlrSEA/видео.html
      I hope this clarifies why I did it this way.

      +mikbonsai ... perhaps, for the next potting, you could try a pot in pot arrangement. That way you get the best of both - a pot that looks suitably big for the tree and yet the roots are confined in a neckless, smaller plastic pot, within the larger ceramic pot. Just a thought.

    • @mikbonsai
      @mikbonsai  6 лет назад

      Thanks Vinny, will give it some thought and decided at the next repot. Appreciate you suggestion.

    Very helpful vedio , plz help me out here in S California. I'm new to bonsai and became very enthusiastic when I found a nice Wisteria I thought would be a good choice for bonsai .... the root system was crazy big by the time I was done pruning the roots it was quite small . We're in early spring here I thought it to be a good time for this it's been three weeks , I did remove most of the foliage to give the roots more advantage.... I'm worried it might not make it , when should I expect to see budding if this plant makes it? A month 6 weeks ? Help !! Thank you !

    • @mikbonsai
      @mikbonsai  5 лет назад

      Spring is a good time to repot and do root work. Keep the tree in full shade for three weeks from repot to give the tree a chance to recover from the repot and for the feeder roots to develop. I see we are past that point, you could still move it into the shade. I hope you have been watering adequately and also left some very thin roots, in which case it should recover. Use a sharp knife to scratch the bark and if it is green, it is alive and will recover. However if it is brown, you tree is dead. I hope this helps.
      Let me know how you the tree is doing either way, as this is how you learn to bonsai.

      I had been off YT for 6 years due to ill health and within a few months of health diagonsis my son of 27 year passed away. I am well and back making bonsai videos.
      Apologies for the late reply.
      You let the leader (also known as the scrifical branch) to grow uncontrolled and that thickens the trunk. When the trunk has reached your desired thickness, then you do a trunk chop and remove the leader at the desired height and work on growing an apex.

    Hi, how do you thicken up the trunk? My white wisteria is only a year old, I just bought it and looking to thicken up the trunk.

    • @mikbonsai
      @mikbonsai  5 лет назад

      To thicken the trunk, you can plant it int the ground for a few years. the trunk will thicken faster in the ground than in a bonsai pot. When you are happy with the thickness of the trunk, lice the tree from the ground in early spring and repot it.
      Keep in touch and let me know how you are doing with your tree.
      Regards

    Hi, i have a chinese wisteria bonsai which i grew from seed, bout 5 months old, lately some of the leaves have started to brown at the tips and edges, what could be causing this? Also, when would i start pruning?

    • @mikbonsai
      @mikbonsai  4 года назад

      All the information you need to look after your Wisteria is in the video, rewatch and follow the steps.
      Place the pot in a tray of water as I do with mine. Prune at times advised in the video. At 5 months its is too young to start pruning,
      but if it is getting out of control, keep the trunk and prune the long leggy branches.
      Good luck

    Hi! I have a wisteria I started from seed. It is about 4 years old now. I am wondering if you have any suggestions for what my next step is. Do I need to repot it yet? I have it potted in regular indoor plant potting soil...if I repot it now should I use something different for soil? I have a picture of it but don’t know how to add it to this message.

It did survive the winter in the garage but for some reason did not survive early summer. Not sure I know exactly what happened but it slowly just died. I will eventually start over but I think I might wait until I move somewhere with a better climate.
