    It's not that difficult. You should continue unwinding after the spare wheel has got to the floor, it unwinds quite a lot further. Then you can pull it out from underneath the van then releasing it is easy.
    There is no need to get under the van.

    • @tomaitchison8726

      Yes, when I was testing out doing it, I wound it down as much as possible and pulled it out the back. It is reasonably difficult, but if 74 year old me can do it, most people should be able to.

    Nice video👍🏼. I’ve been fitting a spare wheel carrier to my van and watched your video with interest. I found that the cable is quite long if you wind it fully out, and you can fit/remove the carrier into the wheel with it standing against the bumper then just wind it in.

    The bag with bolts and plate in are required to fit the alloy wheel to the cradle you need to use the different bolts and adapter as the centre bore is different.

    If you roll out the spare wheel cable completely, you can pull the wheel under the bumper. You don't have to crawl under the car. (Dis)assembly of the hook is also much easier. The winch first pulls the tire back under the car and then up against the attachment.

    Thank you so much for taking the trouble to make this video Ian. I knew what the adaptor plate was for, but hadn't appreciated the effort involved in lowering the steel spare and getting it off the winch cable. I've had several cars where the spare has been underslung in a cradle, but the bolt head for lowering the cradle has always been in the floor of the boot, and removing the spare has been quick and effortless.
    It's easy to understand why Fiat have opted for a winch operated from underneath the van though. Just imagine your Ducato is an Amazon delivery van rather than a campervan or motorhome. If you had a puncture you'd have to take some parcels out to drop the spare, and while you're busy changing the wheel, they'd all get nicked 🤣
    If I'm unlucky enough to get a puncture on a dark, wet, windy night, I'll know exactly what's involved, and believe me, your doing this will greatly reduce the pain and save me reaching for the owners manual. Especially as I don't carry it in the van!

    Thank you for another informative video Ianl. I am currently considering whether to fit a spare wheel to my van and your video was very helpful. I've watched most of your videos and they all provide excellent practical advice The only additional comment I would add to this video is the importance of the order in which the wheel nuts are tightened which should be 1, 3, 5, 2, and 4.

    Many thanks for the videos, I'm cramming them over the last few days.
    When jacking a car/van with the scissor jack it's easy to chip the paint around the jacking point, this can lead to rust etc. Previously with my cars, I have placed several folded layers of fabric (old t-shirt) over the jack where it contacts the van to stop metal to paint contact. It's a little bit fiddly as this obscures the jacking point, but with a small amount of patience you can get it all located and save the paint around the jacking point .. hope this helps.
    Just a thought. It would have been interesting to pop the wheel onto some household scales to show the weight. I'm taking a total guess at 30kg.. maybe we could have done a challenge to guess the weight :)

    I'm very grateful to you for this video.
    I just found out my spare wheel isn't holding pressure due to a dodgy valve.
    I stopped the vid half way and went and followed the instructions. I wouldn't have known where to start without it.
    I have to say the procedure is not easy. I found using the jack to hold the wheel up worked well cos you can push the tyre hard up against the underside and theres no danger of it falling on your arm while you try to detach it. It does get in the way a bit though.
    I reckon the most fiddly part is getting the thingy on the end of the cable up through the hole in the wheel. There is no real clearance and it keeps sticking.
    Edit one day after:
    Just had a new valve fitted and tyre ready to be put back on the carrier. Turns out if I just keep lowering the carrier there is plenty enough cable to get it right out the back of the van. So no having to support the heavy wheel and this makes fiddling with the thingy so much easier.
    Thanks anyway cos I wouldn't have known where to start.
    Now I'm an expert 💪

      if you continue to wind the spare wheel down after it hits the floor, there is enough slack cable to just pull the wheel out from under the van, it makes it really really easy to remove the plate from the spare wheel...just drag the wheel out from under the van theres is plenty of spare cable, then when returning the wheel its easy to put the holding plate back through the hole and simply wind it back in under the van and up into place, the winding mechanism will drag the wheel back under and up, although if you want to give the wheel a push it helps....doing it the way shown on the vid makes it really really difficult.

    Hi Ian. I'm 71. A retired plumber with a bad back lol. It looked a bit difficult for you at only 25? What do you think at my age? Should I give it a go just for a practice? We have a 2019 Elddis 155 with a big overhang at the back. Now, you changed the front wheel and could see the cab jacking point but ours is a coach built, as they call them and the jacking point isn't too obvious. After only 4 years and 21,000 miles the front tyres are half worn and have tiny cracks between the treads. It's just passed its MOT. The tester said the cracks are nothing to worry about - but since then, after scrambling about scaping rust off black brackets and painting them with Hammerite, I noticed the back tyres (still have about 6mm of tread on them) have even bigger and longer splits in them! Now it's not happened overnight so it must have gone through the MOT with these big splits no trouble. They say if they aren't through to the canvas they are ok. But we have a problem. There is a massive 70lbs of pressure in the fronts and a mind blowing 80lbs in the backs. In fact the tyre pressure limit on the sidewall is 80lbs and with cracks in them I shudder to think! Some people with older vans say they've let them down to 60 front and 70 back with a slightly smoother ride and still good handling but if I do that with mine the bloody warning comes on the speedo telling me the tyres are underinflated. Can these be either adjusted or cancelled all together? One bloke reckoned that Elddis put more pressure than's really needed to avoid flatspots during storage. Is this bulls**t or what? I can see a big bill for 4 new tyres looming up but guess what - I won't be changing the buggers! Great video by the way.

    • @tomaitchison8726
      @tomaitchison8726 8 месяцев назад

      The pressures you see on the door panel, are for a fully loaded white van man's van. Get your van to a weighbridge and weigh both axles, then send it to the tyre manufacturer and they'll email you back the correct pressures. We do do this with every van and have never had a problem, CV20 and I think my pressures are 55 to 58 front and 58 to 60 rear. The van runs and handles very well along with being comfortable and not feeling every bump..

    Hi Ian great video,when you had wheel off i noticed you had surface rust on the wheel hub.I have always cleaned this off and smeared copper grease on affected areas as through time the alloy wheel will weld itself to hub and will be a bugger to get off.I do this to all my wheels once a year and have never had any problems,cheers

    • @mikespeers8281
      @mikespeers8281 Год назад

      The rusted area isn’t the problem, that’s where the alloy isn’t seating. The problem is where the alloy wheel seats against the hub and that’s where a smear of copper slip will help because over time alloy reacts with the steel and bonds. The copper slip reduces this reaction.

    Many thanks for that video as I was a bit baffled by the Ducato system which to be honest is utterly ridiculous. Given the amount of space under these vans you would have thought they'd fit a more user friendly system. I agree that in the dark and the rain that wheel lowering would be a nightmare. I wonder how many poor souls have struggled helpless to force that cradle back through the wheel. My spare is also retained by 2 large cable ties presumably factory fitted and not replaceable? Next sunny day I'm going to practice getting the wheel lowered after seeing that. Have also been told to regularly lubricate the mechanism with WD40 as it has a tendency to corrode and seize.

    • @TravellingfromScratch
      @TravellingfromScratch  2 года назад

      WD40 is a very good tip. I agree, it's not the best system and very difficult to operate. I also recommend that from time to time people should lower the spare wheel down from under the van and check the tyre pressure. The last thing you need on a wet and windy night is to get a flat tyre only to find that your spare is also flat. Worth checking now and again. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I appreciate it. 👍
