Fitting Pro Plate Door Handle Security on Ducato / Boxer / Relay - Installation guide

- I bought a Pro Plate for £22 + postage from www.ebay.co.uk... and requested the black version. All arrived, and I've been procrastinating for ages! Anyway, today is the day....
The idea of this plate is the Sevel vans are susceptible to a simple attack where a screwdriver puncture under a keyed door handle will "unlock" the door. I thought deadlocked doors were protected from this but I was told otherwise and looking at the mechanism it does appear to be the case. A deadlocked door forced this way would trigger an alarm (if fitted) but the door would open trivially. The external plate protects the vulnerable sport and reinforces the area and is a visual deterrent. The internal frame is what prevents the standard attack working as you can't simply push the catch up. The size of the internal plate would make it very difficult to lift the catch externally without a major hole in the door. Suffice to say nothing is 100% but this will stop the common thief.
The instructions were OK, but there were some bits I didn't understand which fortunately were not needed !! Phew.
Knowing what I do now, its a 1.5hr job I reckon.
My tips:-
1 - Ensure the external plate has correct profile before you fit it. My bend at the bottom was too angled - I had to flatten it. Fitting it as provided did not sit flush and would've damaged paint
2 - You do not need to disconnect the cable to the internal handle; or to the external handle. (The plate can be put on sideways and rotated over the handle). With the internal handle connected, the top door panel is "retained" but can drop down and you can work around it.
3 - When undoing the 10mm nuts on handle, don't drop them. And on re-insertion use tape on the socket so they are retained and not dropped in.
4 - The speaker connection is from the front of the speaker, not the rear, so route the cable through the hole before fitting trim
5 - The "electrics" panel is vv tight - lift rear, and once raised unclip sides then hope!
6 - The only lock mechanism you undo is the "key bar to lock" which is awkward, and blind. Its a "u" clip that clips over the bar. Undoing is easy, you can squeeze it out - but note the "end" of the 90' goes into the centre axis of the rotating bit. So when reassembling, put in the and of the 90 first then clip it in. 7 - The corner trim section on mine was too tight, I just undid bottom and accessed the T30.
Of course, if you can remove the lock mechanisms based on the instructions then do so - just for the life of me I couldn't without feeling like I was over stressing the part, so opted not to.
I had to take it apart 3 times - don't do the same unless you want practice :')
A few extra tips!!
Thanks for the very good instructive video. Let me add a few tips:
-my proplates were cut our a bit rough. Check firsts, if necessary file, red scotchbrite and 2000 grinding paper to make smooth.
-use construction Silicon (exterior use) in stead of Butyl sealant. The last is very thick and the result is not so good (I did both)
-first mount without connecting cables to ensure the proplates and sealant are correct placed. Let dry 24 hours later, remove handles only, connect etc.
Good tips. Mine was powder coated so the finish was OK.
Many thanks or posting this video. I have just fitted a proplate to my 2022 Ducato. This really helped.
There are some changes on the 2022 Ducato model on the plastic door trim. No need to remove the speaker, the grill appears be part of the door now.
There are also more 30 Torx screws, particularly under some plastic covers in the centre of the door and in the door well under the window.
Also they have put a plastic hatch cover for a hole, next to the locking mechanism. Once you remove it, it makes removing and reinstalling the last of the three bolts so much easier. I had tried for 30 minutes before removing this hatch and then it took seconds.

glad it was helpful. shows any scroat you have taken precautions and hopefully gives them an extra few seconds to look and see other deterrents and move on. doubt anything is 100% but it will help

Great video , but my neighbour had his ducato broken into by just pushing a screwdriver through the keyhole. That's what he told me I could not see any damage to the door .
Hi. Interesting. Most go under and "pop" the lever, thats what this stops. If his was susceptible to screwdriver through lock then may be an older model or without OEM deadlocks? Our van has deadlocks which (I believe) stop the lock being vulnerable this way. Hopefully, seeing this plate may make them think - and look inside - and see other measures too and then go elsewhere. Nothing will be 100% :(
@@Ryan_DYD Thanks for your reply ,yes his van is a 2017 model . I don't think it has deadlocks .
@@davidt1016 Wow. Newer than I thought. I *believe* the deadlocks would prevent this. Mine had deadlocks from factory (sportivo edition had uprated alarm/deadlocks as part of the package). You can only do the best you can do, and hope!

how can it fit over without removing that cable ? am i missing something ?
lol - yes, but my memory is faded. I think the release would make life easier - but without releasing (and a helper to hold) you can get the external bit over the handle by doing it diagonally and passing over - and the internal bit just slides up. It does work - honest :)

Is it necessary to mount a plate on the passenger side too?
As I understand it, its on all keyed door only, so vans may vary. It prevents the attack where the lever moved by the key turn is accessed with a screwdriver. I believe, and was told, but didn't check that the lever doesn't exist on unkeyed doors. Feel free to check!

Awesome video. I saw this pop up in the Facebook group a few weeks back and didn't even realise it was a problem. Now I've seen 3 or 4 videos/discussions on it since so I'm going to go ahead and order some and use your video to install :) I had a (possibly really stupid) question. So does this mean I need to order 4 of these, one for each front door, as well as one for the sliding and rear doors?

Hi. The link works on mine? Did you copy it all? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143860150248 - no affiliation. AIUI the plate is only needed on doors with keys as the "attack" pushes up the lever which is attached to the key barrel. My van only has drivers door key.

Why put a video up showing how a security device is fitted. Let’s thieves work out ways to by pass this device???
I did think about it, but the plate is visible externally and the instructions are online and "how" it works is obvious . Any scroat knows how to get into an unprotected van, its not rocket science. If they want to get in with this on its a much bigger job and one they'll hopefully avoid. I could break into an unprotected van, I could not bypass this without wrecking the door. Easier to break glass but even then door would not open. Hopefully it would encourage them to go elsewhere. Its easier to pick the lock (see Lock Picking lawyer vids...)

Seriously?? 😂 the fitting video doesn't make the proplate less effective. Its a physical barrier to the screwdriver attack
