    As you rightly point out you have really just measured your room here. The correct way to measure full range is to position your speakers well out into the room, point your mic at the tweeter directly in front 1 metre or less from the baffle. You must gate your measurements, I often use 5ms though less will give smoother response at the expense of low frequency resolution to remove the room reflections. You must also measure horizontally and vertically off axis to get a complete understanding of the sound power and much can be shown using a polar plot in the Dr Geddes approach - he has a white paper on this. JBL calls this a spinorama.
    Good on you for presenting this comparo, but please please please do read up on the plentiful how to's on the web. Elsewhere someone suggested Jeff Bagbys white paper which is excellent.
    Keep up the good work.

    • @JilesMcCoy
      @JilesMcCoy  4 года назад +2

      I am measuring the room... but it’s a solid way to do comparison measurements. Each speaker is impacted identically by the room so you can see the relative strengths and weaknesses.

    • @maz4bz592
      @maz4bz592 4 года назад

      @@JilesMcCoy Hi JD, I'm sorry but I must completely disagree with you on this one. Your room is not representative of anyone elses and besides these speakers measure way better than you've shown here. Speaker measurements are meant to isolate the speakers performance from the room so that others can guage how the speakers perform irrespective of room. Have a search for Dr Floyd O'Toole of JBL. He explains the far better than I can. He has a great lecture video on RUclips about this very matter.
      You have the kit do do this right. All you need now do is some reading and your vids will be a big help for peeps in the market for these kinds of speakers.
      Keep up the good work.

    • @JilesMcCoy
      @JilesMcCoy  4 года назад

      Maz 4bz No, the room is uniquely mine. Which is the point. Put the different speaker in the same spot in the same room and you are able to see the relative differences in the speakers because the room impact is static. The speaker is the change. Obviously different room will have different impacts.

    • @JilesMcCoy
      @JilesMcCoy  4 года назад

      Additionally, the goal is not to creat a measurement that is representative of the uncolored output of the speaker. The goal is to do a real world comparison of speakers in a less than perfect environment. Thanks for watching.

    One thing i have learned from being a AUDIO REVIEWER, is alot of what the speaker sounds like depends greatly on what kind of ampliefier you use with each speaker, like a cool netural or warm sounding amp , When I test speakers against each other i use many amps , I also have have 3 different setup rooms 1 desk top 1 nearfield and 1 living room all speakers shine different ! I now have 9 different ampliefiers to cover a wider range and not to base my opion on using 1 amp and 1 room . On a desk top or nearfield those RP51s will be best most likely ,

      Proper amplifiers shouldn't be adding any coloration. If your amplifiers are, then get better amps. The frequency response curve of an amplifier should be a flat ruler at any load. The only differences in sound you should hear is when the amp is clipping - but in that case the proper cure is a more powerful amp.

I have never heard their 600 series speakers, but I would like to compare them to mine. I've done blind-fold tests with them as well, to reduce biases. Excellent speakers, but NOT neutral. I wouldn't recommend them for a true "audiophile" system. The 600 was less bright to me then the 51's. (Which is a good thing as that the 51s are brighter than I like.) Adding a subwoofer to the mix significantly levels the playing field though... but the 600s do have an overall more pleasing sound to me. If you want to save a bit of money you could buy a B stock set for somewhere in the 300s. Mine are B stock and I am completely happy. I can point you to a great place to purchase if you want to explore pricing.

R-51M and R-51PM are probably close together in quality, so it maybe interesting to pit these against each other if you have a chance at some point. Anyhow I enjoyed your comparison and the education I got from it. Take care now and have a great remaining Christmas period and the new year :-)

    What would you say to us out here that did not buy the 600m speakers and just stayed with the RP 160M speakers by Klipsch ? I have responded to several postings produced by audiophiles, technicians and music lovers. It seems to be taboo to either outright make a thorough comparison about any significant sonic differences between the above mentioned models or in comparisons like this to include a sub set comparison. If there are any out there that I may not have come across, please direct me to them because I would really like to check that out.
    Anyways -to repeat - for those of us who did not react to the excitement of the 600m speakers as necessarily upgrades of the 160m speakers - how do you think the 160m speakers would weigh in here?

    • @JilesMcCoy
      @JilesMcCoy  4 года назад

      Hey - I’ve not listened to the 160m for more than a few minutes at a time so I cant comment on a comparison of the two. But, in general, if you are happy with what you have there is no reason to change.

      I have LS50s hooked up to my PC with a JL sub. The LS50s have a big mid range bloat at around 130 to 140hz. I EQ'd it down with a software equalizer and had fantastic results. Not taking anything away from the Klipsch, but the LS50s are fantastic as a near field speaker.

    686s2 have much better resolution , space , precision in the highs and midrange , better clarity not shouty like Klipsch.
    Pair it with nice REL sub and it will amaze . Build quality of B&W from crossover to drivers is 2 levels better than Klipsch... and it shows in sound quality.
    So by pairing it with receiver does not get all resolution out of them.
    These need 120w high current power amp to shine...
    Klipsch maybe a good metal and rock speaker due to its shouty in your face character...
