I'm glad you directed me to this from your more recent video. The story of skipping the comp to go climbing outdoors really appeals to me. Making that decision required knowing yourself and making a decision to do what you actually wanted, not what you "should" do.
Love your vlogs Dave. Also, a wise person once said, 'you don't need motivation, you need discipline'. I've found that quite helpful. Doing what you think is best, for whatever reason, and continually reassessing that, is also a good plan.
Great video Dave. Motivation is such a huge subject in all walks of life. When you get to my age sometimes it's difficult even to find the motivation to get out there. Funny thing is, once you do it you're always glad you did.
Dave, I wasn’t even looking for motivation when I clicked on this, I’m borderline obsessed. Just wanted to hear your words on it but you’ve inspired me even more to keep at training and maybe even try for a short 5.9 3 bolt but solo. I’ve already sent it several times and I love it, cool technical slab called Old School Highball and it’s got a walk off so there’s my goal now! I’ll use many pads!
Really interesting post! I really relate to where you said "I saw that the needs to try something again and again before seeing meaningful success is just part of life and shouldn't require and extra effort". This has always been normal for me, and i'm really grateful for it. The difference with me is that my mom was the opposite of your mom! Very unmotivated and tried to discourage me from climbing and other outdoor activities. Good thing she wasn't successful ;)
Motivation is fleeting, habits are forever.. i think if you make a habit of keeping climbing fun while trying hard, you will keep coming back and seeing progress. That’s my goal!
from experience, i think that if you are not motivated in your true core, then just dont do it? but everything has its highs and low's, and sometimes you just gotta force that extra couple of sessions in, do those extra hours at the gym and so on, it might be awfull at the moment, but it is important to keep your goal in mind, why is it that you climb? why do you want to push yourself? And in the end when you send that proj, it's totally worth it, and you will thank yourself for suffering and that you stayed positive and got those extra sessions in.
Had a lovely session at Raven Tor this morning, nearly time to head to the wall do do some finger boarding.... (Had already decided, this vid helped though!)
Minor nitpick, but Edinburgh's Alien Rock claims to be Scotland's first indoor wall (1994). They're actually celebrating their 25th birthday this coming weekend! Quality content as always though.
I find motivation for training is not a problem, but not training(bouldering) too mutch is. i live inn a area with lots of rock and tend to go out a lot while also trying to maintain a good training program. how would you handle this? i find when i go out and dont do my projekt i just get more motivated for training, but im allways on the edge of injury it seems :)
Brilliant video Dave! Would love to hear your take on the best ways to maximise training without frequent access to rocks or a wall. Do you have any advice for climbers who can only climb (hangboard not included) once a week or fortnight? Common consensus seems to be that progress isn't going to be made with that low frequency, but wondering what your thoughts might be on this?
I kind of run a compute error to process that really. Not many scenarios where one would choose such a routine. But if so, then forget about training and go and enjoy a nice rock climb.
Hi Dave. Just a long shot but I thought it would be worth asking anyway? I have created a RUclips channel in Aberdeen well there are loads of good climbers hear (Guy Roberts, Niele Morison) but it's not that well advertised. My channel will be dedicated mainly of my own training and experience's in the mountains. And as I am going for the BMG I want to help people who are thinking about it as well. I asked Guy for an interview for my channel and he segregated you would be better. Just a though. Give me a message / Comment. Looking forward to hearing from you.
That second overhanging problem really showcased your technique combined with strength. Any chance you could give us the name and location. Brilliant send by the way.

I was looking for excuses to not go out climbing today but I'll be going out now, thanks!
Nice comments about your Mum. My Mum used to work with her!

Watching you do those climbs, man. You absolute beast aha
A wonderful story about competition. You started smiling immediately. I guess you are definately an outdoor person :)
Really enjoy listening to you man. Thanks for sharing!
This is the answer we need. Thank you Dave!!

Whats the chances of you doing Jam Crack podcast with Niall Grimes, Dave? Loving the quality content as usual!

top notch advice!
I wish I could get out and get my fire back today, 2 weeks of only being able to fingerboard is starting to sap my motivation.
wise words
I need "motivation to take rest days when you're tired" video :(

have you ever lost a climbing friend to climbing ie you being more motivated or just wanting to be better ?

Do you usually go climbing outdoor alone?
Yes.

Thanks. See title at 1:46.
Ahhh, I guess I should watch some videos on attention to the details. Thanks again for all the great updates.
