DEATH GRIPS - THE MONEY STORE FIRST REACTION/REVIEW (JUNGLE BEATS)

- Death Grips - The Money Store...it's fair to say we've never heard anything quite like this before. The Money Store is a chaotic cluster of in you're face "sit down bitch" instrumentation. Death Grips have single handledy restructured the way I (Alexander Sandalis) think about music. Alexander Mann has at least heard essences of some of these sounds from his time listening to artists like Aesop Rock so it didn't catch him off guard as much. Death Grips has to have an incredible amount of artistic creativity and courage to completely go against all traditional music structuring. They have redefined what it means to go "outside the box" for me. Thanks to those that tuned into the live stream and been advised us to go and listen to the lyrics to see a lot of the content we're missing. We hope to review most of their albums month by month.

Jungle Beats aspires to be Australia’s plug to the best most prolific and unique hiphop artists in the world. @AlexanderPMann & @AlexSandalis host one of Australia's few, and best HipHop podcast shows. Jungle Beats is purely about creatively sharing our love for music and hiphop with energy, positivity and passion. We started this in 2015 with a weekly 1 hour hiphop show on a radio station in Melbourne. In August 2016 we decided to create Jungle Beats. To us, Australia doesn't have a strong hiphop identity within culture. Who do you think of when you think hiphop in Australia? Most think of 99 people OUTSIDE of this country. Maybe we can change that in some small way and push it forward. Jungle Beats is not what either of us focus the majority of our time on. Working on Jungle Beats Radio is side hustle of ours, so it’s not going to be perfect. It’s gonna be messy, haphazard and we’re gonna fuck up. But that’s music and we love it. it's always fun to see people get noided for the first time
Noided?
Noided.
Jungle Beats *N O I D E D*
N o I d e d
or Rodied should I say
"i dont know what to feel..."
You gotta feel N O I D E D
444th up-vote. It's the little things...
guys, why are you listening to dense music like this in basically an echo chamber?
Cus they want to feel like on gp
Death Grips is cocaine for the ears.
*cancer
nah I just know decent music from random assortments of noise
How is it random. it has a pattern a beat samples and everything. Your just saying things that dont make sense and you cant back up.
Michael I'm no music theory expert, but their songs have a structured rhythm. With an uneducated guess, I'd even say there's more structre in this than something like free form jazz. Regardless, in my subjective take on music; the fact that they're so proefficient on making music interesting and cohesive as opposed to something like pop or trap, with less structure and much less to no similar artist to base a sound off of makes them very impressive as artist.
that looks like a terrible room to listen to anything in
why
@@whogaze very echo-y
Yeah I was thinking that, plus the system they are using. It sounds like it's playing out extra 'boomy'
except for this album... in that case, this room is perfect
@@radioguy1667 nah it needs milk crate and palette furniture. The room is way way too nice
please don't ever compare death grips to xxxtentacion again thanks
bladee 💗
Morgan ? Maybe I'm wrong but wasn't there a really old rap group just called triple x or XXX? Maybe they did mean tentac but I could swear there was a group called xxx
Christian Rogers no if you watched the video they were talking about xxxtentacion
Weedboy I watched the video I was just asking. It's. 32 minute video I don't remember every second 😂
xxx sucks
I'd like to explain that hook from the last song, Hacker. In America, phone numbers have 3 numbers for their area codes, which are the first numbers.
I'M IN YOUR AREA
I KNOW YOUR FIRST THREE NUMBERS
Thanks
I always interpreted that as the first 3 digits of a social security number. All your shit is gone because they stole your identity
Jacob Dixon In a video called Death Grips-Hacker but Verbose, this line was interpreted as the first 3 numbers of an IP address.
@@post-ironicgarbageig2345 Yeah I think most people interpret it as an IP. Fits in with the theme of the song as well, like the title is literally Hacker.
George The first three numbers being an area code makes more sense in the context of the previous line. Knowing the first three numbers of an IP address isn’t important to a hacker and it won’t reveal a location.
Listening to death grips is like having a heavy seizure but you like it
The blonde just seems much more open to music diversity, and the other just seems super traditionalist
Yeah man I'd agree...I still gotta a lot to learn and experience within music. - Alexander Sandalis
Well...It is experimental music.
Hey, I didn't like most of my favorite artists the first time I heard them, usually it's just different enough that I come back. No shame in conventional tastes
That's a good contrast/dynamic to have
Fun fact: Death Grips sampled a train passing by, the Williams sisters grunting in a tennis match, a Beatles song, some words from a experimental lesbian film and a lot of crazy shit. There's a video about it in RUclips, look it up.
No wonder I've never heard anything like this.
Jungle Beats Yeah, Flatlander (the producer behind the beats) is a creative madman
There's a theory, for instance, that the squeak noise on Punk Weight is a heavily distorted sample of the famous baby panda sneezing video.
Ciro Raptor Don't forget the shitton of Bjork samples in NOTM
Scizor For Hire what does NOTM stand for?
Most of these songs are CLEARLY verse/chorus I honestly don't know how you could think they have no structure
Worldless .......I know right ? I think it has to do with hearing Death Grips for the first time. After, the sixth time, you understand it better and the songs unravel and reveal themselves .....with Money Store almost being a pop album.
i can understand how you can think there’s no structure to the songs on the first listen. there’s so much being thrown at you that you can’t really focus on the verse/choruses. it takes a few listens to find the repetitions and work out where the different song sections are.
@@nobodyhome2670 yeah
It always confuses me when someone says Death Grips has no structure. A lot of their songs have a verse and a chorus/hook:
The Fever, Hustle Bones, I've Seen Footage, Hacker, System Blower, Bitch Please, just to name a few...
Jason Braun Plebs
I think its mostly because at first listen Death Grips is so goddamn in your face and different that its hard to find structure and "reason" in the music. Definitely happened to me but as you get used to the style its a lot easier to find the patterns and what not.
I get it. They do have a structure, but it's more what they build around that structure that gets me.
I don't see many people if any at all sampling printers, trains, YT videos, and tennis matches.
that's because every song you just named is on the money store, which is their most structured album along with bottomless pit
Spikes, 80808, on gp
Anthony Fantano is gonna have a field day with all these death grips videos other channels are pumping out
They were really thrown at the clusterfuck in System Blower at the drop... Imagine them hearing Inanimate Sensation or Hot Head.
Be sure to bring up Genius and read into the lyrics when you can, guys. Stefan Burnett is a fucking poet. They're not just loudness and insanity for the sake of it.
Please react to all of their other albums in release order too if you can. Each record they've put out is incredibly distinct, to the point where every first listen is like hearing them for the first time all over again. Incredible band.
Ed Bate doesn't zach hill mostly write the songs?
the money store isn't even close to being the same album if you don't grasp what the lyrics are about. When you do read into the lyrics, the "chaos" suddenly makes sense. It's like a look into the mind of a schizo
@@muki2309 all of them write
I feel like if you understand any death grips lyrics you probabley know the meaning of everything that is possible
i always enjoy watching these kind of reactions, they always start with "I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING". As a non-native english speaker, this has always been the norm my whole life when listening to something for the first time, you value production creativeness, non-traditional structure and apparent improvisation much more than lyrics. I could imagine people that have listened to music in their native language their whole life are used to listen to what the singer says and relate to it, and when they can't do so they just get pretty confused.

Jungle Beats In "Hacker" there's a sample they used of Serena Williams hitting back a tennis ball I fucking love Death Grips
brianhugg30 System Blower is the one with that sample actually.
Mr. Galaxy
smart man 👌
Ahh normies getting introduced to bat shit crazy Death Grips.... always delightful
If they were "normies" then they wouldn't have enjoyed any of it lol
Jorge Jara please never say the word normie again
Jorge Jara nice profile.
death grips are normie and you with your full-name youtube profile and swans profile pic are a walking stereotype. I bet you post on facebook meme groups
kyoto graphic i know
26:24 dude is fucking rethinking everything hes ever known.
hes feeling it, even while unaware hes feeling it.
Haha, he seemed like a guy who took drugs that are a bit to strong or heavy but he's still enjoying it, but is right on the edge of losing control and just freezes to keep things together :P
Fear will be plentiful, death will be bountiful.
Chlymidis No Koala *Death Grips will be bountiful
Chlymidis No Koala death will be plentiful, grips will be bountiful. I will noid all of you peasants.
he actually kinda did describe their music in one sentence. well, he did a good job. it's probably impossible to describe their music in one sentence.
is it? i always thought of "sound terrorism" or "cursed images in mp3 format" for a way to describe em
delivery boy looks like canadian jontron
E is the future.
well i mean no question there ha. im just sayin he looks like him. I Call Em Like I See Em
Their reaction to Punk Weight...priceless.
Jungle beats warehouse lit af
After the intro Punk Weight is one of their best song.
i agree but not many others do
Dude the "wildfire through your city" part makes my face cringe in the best way
the intro fucking bangs tbh
The intro is incredible
Bruh the intro is the shittt when I heard the fkn switch just after the intro. Boy did I almost cum
thumbs up for milo yiannopoulos losing his shit at blackjack intro
lmao
“Happy rage” is the description of somebody who hasn’t read the lyrics to the songs.
I’m surprised you guys didn’t like system blower more. That track is RAW
System Blower, Hustle Bones and The Cage come on and I START FUCKING WRECKIN SHIT LOL
Whole album really. It is exhausting doing this every day since 2013 lol

That room automatically added reverb to everything, lol
22:56 Yeah get closer to the speaker, that'll help
My life revolves around death grips
The Cage is the shit.
REACT TO CLPPNG by clipping. Another experimental group like Death Grips but waaay different and great too.
Already familiar with Clipping, listened to their last 2 albums. - A. Mann
Oh fuck, well thanks for replying. Keep those DG albums coming then. Should do Bottomless Pit or Exmilitary next! The Powers That B it's their best for me but the less accesible. Great review

That's my second favorite album from Death Grips.
Which is the 1st one?
it's gonna break them lmfao
1st???
"It's like they're reinventing themselves every time."
Spot on.
they actually did it.. the fucking balls these boys have..
They're small but they're sturdy - A. Mann
Jungle Beats pause
For me the punk weight intro is one of the best parts of the album lol
Glad to see Milo Yiannopoulos has turned over a new leaf 👍🏼
JonTron looks like he's having a good time with that phone at 19:41
I call their style "cyber-punk hip hop" but who tf cares about how they categorized lol
Christopher Shelton I like to call it “cyber hood”
Hurk drubman Jr Them ghetto verses alluring ;)
@@chris.hartliss It would be interesting to hear their music on the new Cyberpunk 2077 game, I imagine it'd fit like a glove.
IT'S LIT, NOTIFICATION SQUAAAAAD
Blonde dude: *literally twerks to I've Seen Footage*
Also blonde dude: eh, not as good as the other ones
If you listen to Death Grips the first time without a readalong, you're going to have a bad time. You're going to do Bottomless Pit eventually, and when you do, you should really consider having one. No one is going to judge you, it's basicly how Death Grips is consumed. This won't be as important on Exmilitary, as that is much easier to listen to. Honestly, that's where people should start.
Thanks for the advice. So you're saying basically have rap genius up on every track?
Jungle Beats yea, the lyrics are really well thought out and interesting, but often times the production obscures it.
Btw, really looking forward to the NLDW reaction. I feel like this band garners the best reactions in general due to how different they are from other rap groups.
_So you're saying basically have rap genius up on every track?_
Maybe. You seem to have a certain style, so maybe try it for bottomless pit, and then go back to commando for Exmilitary. Death Grips is just generally hard to understand, so don't gimp yourself. :P
You can either embrace that, or try to arm yourself with knowledge so you don't become overwhelmed as easily. I say try things.
Good advice thanks.
It's like I forget how good Money Store is before every time I listen to it
No one is ready for Punk Weight the first time, lol
Day1: is this music???
Day 7: this is music!!!
Hacker is fav
everyone forgets about jenny death and the powers that be maybe government plates.
"Chucking shit in there for the fuck of it but making it work"huh ... yeah.. pretty much
Hang some curtains around the wall it will stop the echo and reverb inside. Even on just two walls it should fix it
Did not expect that Aesop Rock comparison, awesome.
They keep saying how its not structured and different, maybe im just jaded by years of DG listening, but the money store is one of their hookiest catchy records. Just wait till they hear interview 2016, or better yet niggas on the moon. Lol thats some real crazy shit in comparison to the 4/4 noise hop on tms
Not dancing to Hacker is a fucking sin
React to Steroids next
Honestly their set is the condition i usually listen to death grips in, just sitting in a cold room with no sound proofing and nothing but a couch and a window you cant see out of
Next album to review (please):
Death Grips, NO LOVE DEEP WEB
17:57 "I don't know what's going on"
Well, they did say they came to blow your system.
I listened to this album when it came out in 2012, but this reaction just made me appreciate it even more
3:05 more like homeless man screams into microphone while his crackhead friend beats a drum into submission
This album has so maaany bangers! 🔥
this is just the beginning ! now you gotta listen to the rest of their albums lol
Exmilitary is actually their first album, and the death grips ep is before that
tzxkcd Exmilitary was a mixtape
The blonde gets it, sort of.
Yo, I sent the super chat money during the stream. I'm in Hobart but I do drop into Melbourne from time to time, so next time I'm planning on being there I'll let you guys know and take you up on headin into the studio to say hi.
Keep it up guys, it's been great having my music taste expanded from watching your videos.
Thank you so much for that! If you're ever in Melbourne hit us up on our social media platforms! - A.Mann
Which one of you is the bottom?
Both.
We like to take turns dependent on mood. - A. Mann
Love how open you guys are to new stuff. Great channel!
love you guys. Its great you are enjoying DG.
I will probably never see Death Grips live, but I want to blast them on my speakers in a huge empty garage...
Hustle Bones, Bitch Please, and Hacker are my favorites
So glad yall checked out Death Grips. please keep going with DG.
It’s like watching cavemen discovering fire
about goddamn time y'all react to Death Grips
Desth grips- no love deep web!!! Cmon
The intro for Punk Weight was fucking rad dude.
Yeah man, dope!!! I really recommend listening to Exmilitary before you go on though. It's their first project and pretty important in their discography. Has their most popular song, and is pretty good
+bulletfastspeed thanks we will
This is their second album not their first
This is their first album Exmilitary was a mixtape
this was there first studio album
Please do more death grips material, the reactions to their music is always so visceral and entertaining
Stay noided, brothr
glad to see my favorite band getting some recognition
"Distorted vocals" like that's not ride's actual voice
😂 true
Please don't film in such an echoey room in the future. Great vid otherwise.
The future is here
Bottomless Pit is there most accessible album, I think you guys will like it
they are only at the beginning of acquiring the patrician taste
React to Nujabes Luv Sic 1-6
Argo This so much
Argo yess
Argo How about his studio albums instead? :D
Modal Soul would be nice to see.
i got so mad when i couldn't get to hear punk weight beatdrop.
PAT-TREE-ON! PAT! PAT! TREE-ON!
about time
They would like no love the best for sure
I just skipped to them reacting to "Punk Weight"
b-but exmilitary is better? and it's the first mixtape
Well you're correct on one of those points...
nolove>tms
Oh I didn't know that, maybe we'll have to go back to that tape before their next album after TMS. - A. Mann
Bog hopper The Money Store is still the best imo, i think they're sound progressed after exmilitary.
Their style has definitely evolved if you're planning on doing more it'd be good to understand the start point.
You should do all the DG albums but do their Exmilitary mixtape first!!
is that Milo Yiannopoulos?
YESS, THEY DID IT !!! I fuckin requested this shit. Yea boi.
